Unable to use System Update

I have tried using System Update several times, from the date the system was new and was unable to successfully update my system. The program connects and states that several updates are available and then I allow it ot download all the packages. However, it then fails on the install of each and every package.
I have tried reinstalling the application by downloading it from the lenovo site, but then that fails to properly install as well. I get a series of error messages that I have saved in a Word document with screen captures of the dialog boxes, but unfortuantely can not attach. Here are two fo the messages:
First: header: InstallUtil.exe Common Language Runtime Debugging Services
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xfcc (4044), Thread id=0xff8 (4088)
Click OK to terminate, cancel to debug the application
Last: header: System Update Installer Information
Error 1722: There is a problem with this WIndows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action StartSuService.EXE, location: ...\startsuservice.exe
There are a series of other messages in between, including a terminal window that opens up as part of the batch file/package and other exceptions are generated that could not be handled with different process and thread ids.
I do hope someone can help. I have tried removing, rebooting and then reinstalling the application and each and every time this is what I get.
Please help!

I am using Windows Vista on R61i. I got the same error as you. I uninstalled and installed the System Update but did not work.

Out of chance, I am using Google's Chrome and it shows "Microsoft .NET status : Unable to determine" which prompted me to check the version. In fact, I only have .NET Framework 1.1.
Strangely, using IE, it shows "Microsoft .NET status : Installed".
After I deleted the .NET Framework 1.1 and installed .NET Framework 3.5, it works !

  • Unable to use System.getProperties()

I have looked through this forum extensively and found some discussion concerning the use of System.getProperties(). I am unable to get at properties set in my JNLP file under resources. Some of the posts here are not quite detailed enough or contradict each other.
Here is what I need to know:
Can you get at System properties that are set in the JNLP file without signing jar's? Some of the posts say "yes" while other's make it sound as if the only way is via signed jar's.
I understand that attempting to get at System properties that are set by the JRE itself are not reachable unless jar's are signed and have the proper security settings in the JNLP file.
If someone could please provide an accurate answer it would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Marc

I found the answer to my question. You can set System Properties at runtime in an "untrusted" environment ONLY when using the following prefixes:
    - "jnlp."
    - "javaws."
This worked great for me. I found this piece of information in the previous Release Notes Web Start 1.0.1-02. Gee, it would be nice if they had put that information in the update to date docs for Web Start 1.2.

  • Used system update, now safari crashes, can't intiate a new system update

I used the software update in Tiger, updated the latest version of the security update and the itunes...now everytime I open up safari it crashes, and I can intiate a new software update as it crashes too. Any ideas on how to fix?

I am havibg the excate same problem, but much worse. I lost the connection to my external 200 GB firewire Lacie drive. Grab and iChat got to not responing as do my Microsoft Office applications. Every hour it seams that I am discovering more things that no longer work. Amoung them is me since I can't use Word or Excel, I am dead in the water.
With so many other posts about 10.4.5, there must be something wrong with the upgrade. It can't be that so many of us are experiencing this because there is something wrong with our individual systems. Tiger 10.4.5 is the common thread of all of these problems.
So far, all of the help, that has been given, assumes that "we" have installed bad drivers or something else that has caused this mayhem. I think that Apple should accept sample machines from us, at an Apple Store, to investigate the issues. After reading some of the messages, I am scared to re-load the OS from the original disk.

  • ThinkPad Edge unable to use System Recovery Options

I am helping a friend with a laptop problem. The HDD has had problems in the past and already been restored once. Now it won't boot and I'm unable to access the f8 boot options in order to use Safe Mode. I was able to boot using Kaspersky, but it doesn't show the whole HDD and files.
I've given up trying to access files and just want to try to get the PC working again. I tried using the System Recovery Options and doing a restore, but after it launches I get a message that says "You must log in in order to access System Recovery Options."
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Good day and welcome to the community.
It may help others provide advice with a bit more information about the system you're working on. TP Edge model, windows version, etc.

  • Unable to do Software update, access iTunes, use widgets on dash and upload

    *_Here is the problem:_*
    1. Unable to use Software Update. When I try I get: "+A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again+" This is despite being connected to the internet and getting most things done.
    2. Widgets which require data retrieval are not working. Notably weather and currency convertor.
    3. iTunes cannot connect to the store. Tells me to check my network (which, if I do, I am told is fine, thanks)
    4. Cannot view images (such as car rental vouchers) which are meant to display in email. In fact- the entire email disappeared before my eyes! But CAN, luckily, view on the server so I KNOW it is not just that the image is "spam" etc.
    5. First thing on this list which made me wary- I cannot upload to YouTube, it times out ("unknown error" but timing out is mentioned) and this is using Firefox 3.8.3.
    6. Safari will not load at all- it just keeps trying to load.
    7. Displaying pages is slower than usual and downloading Onyx took ages and displayed no data regarding the file size or length of download time.
    *_What I know:_*
    1. I didn't update the last two times I was prompted because I was too busy to have it shut down on me and restart, etc.
    2. I also had a go at trying to set up a web proxy and failed miserably. Though I actually changed the settings on another network to the one I am using I am so not network-literate that I fear that I have somehow done this to myself.
    *_What I have tried:_*
    1. safe starts, restarts,
    2. deleting the preferences pertaining to Software Update from the various locations,
    3. repaired permissions and-
    4. thought of (I cannot afford to lose the data and haven't the time to back up just now- as per usual, this comes at the WORST time as I am on standby to fly out of the country due to VERY heavy and sad family affairs and need access to the files on the computer even if I cannot fully use the internet- just too many people/GB Pounds riding on this) using Onyx to try to "fix" this.
I have read up on others getting similar issues but am not certain that everyone has ALL the symptoms I am seeing (and then they may not be busy trying all these things on the one day and may not KNOW it is affected as well!). And I have tried each and every cure offered to these people. No good.

When you are going to be connecting to different networks that require different settings--such as proxies--you must establish different Locations in your Network System Preferences. If you're going to be connecting at college, you may want to set up a location called "College" and set the proxy settings so you can use it there. Then, when you want to go online at school, go to System Preferences -> Network and change your location to College. Then when you get home, change your settings back to "Automatic" or whatever you've named your home location.
Your Mac doesn't differentiate between networks it's connected to in order to automatically apply different settings. It relies on you to do that through the Locations set-up.
Anyway, glad it's working for you, and thanks for the star!

  • How to correctly use ThinkVantage System Update?

    Hello,
I have ThinkPad E520 for two months and I still don't know how to correctly use System Update. From the beginning I've downloaded and installed all updates, but now I want to do it right. How do you do it? Do you install only updates that you need? Or all updates of program that you use? Or just all updates that System Update offers?
Here is interesting sentence: "If it's not broken, don't fix it!". So how?
I don't want to risk and do unnecessary things... But there is a problem with me, that I don't know, which update do I need... So I really need know, how to do it correctly...
    Thank you.

Do only use System Update if you have problems with a driver or Thinkvantage Tool - feature.
In my company we never used System update and the laptops are running without any changes (except Windows update) since 5 to 6 years. So i have removed TVSU from all computers.
System Update is a very excellent tool after a clean install from a Windows CD/DVD to install all Lenovo drivers and tools you want to use. A disadvantage of cyclic updates via System Update is, that parts of old drivers in most cases will be kept because the newer driver will be installed over the old one in most cases, which leads after several updates to an instability of the system.
    Just my private opinion...

  • System Update 5.01 update only removes itself on Win7

I recently launched System Update (installed on Windows 7 x64 on my x230) version 5.01 and was notified that an update was available. After accepting the "install update?" query, the usual download and installation ensued... and guess what, after that (download+installation) something (UCS?) crashed and when looking for tvsu anywhere on my disk (Program Files, Program Files x86, ProgramData) all I could find was... well... nothing.
Are you trying to tell me something, Lenovo? That the best way to use System Update is to not use it?
Or is there a less subtle explanation as well?
If you care for why this happened, I'll delay installing the 5.02 TVSU until tomorrow... if you need any logfiles until then, tell me.
Beyond that, I suppose other end users will me more surprised and less happy / able to solve this.

    Benjs,
Sounds like 5.01 tried to do an Update in place, to update to 5.02. Look in control panel>admin tools>event viewer for entries around the time of your Update.
    -or- (easier)
Action center (white flag on task bar), Maintenance, View reliability history. Look on the bottom line for BLUE I icon (information), for the date of your attempted install(upgrade in place) of SU. On the bottom of the screen, documentation should show up, such as "Lenovo system update   ,,,,  Successful application removal" Go to the Far right of the line, and click on VIEW TECHNICAL DETAILS.  You MIGHT see another detail line that states unsuccessfull application installation. Try to install from here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?LegacyDocID=TVSU-UPDATE
The msi installer log will be found in C: Users\**YOUR id**\appdata\local\temp\TVSUsetup.log  or similar. If msi failure, go to the bottom on the MSI log and look for error/failure/return codes and post them.
SU is found in Program files(x86)\lenovo\System Update. It does store data in \program data.
I installed SU 5.02(upgrade in place), without any issues.  I also uninstalled it and reinstalled it yesterday, without any issues.  The Upgrade in place does NOT give an option to create a shortcut to execute SU.   Standalone install will create a short cut under LENOVO (folder) System Update(subfolder entry) .

  • System Update 5 not detecting drivers for M92P (2988-A6U)

I've installed our corporate image (Windows 7 SP1 - 64bit) which has an older network driver installed. 11.12.36.0
The latest driver from Lenovo's web site is 11.15.16.0 which installs without a problem.
So i re-imaged again with the older driver 11.12.36.0 and figured that the easiest way to update the driver(s) would be to use System Update 5.
To my surprise when i ran system update it returns the following:
"No packages applicable to your system were found"
No i know i could just fix the image and install the driver during the image process but I want to use System Update.
Does anybody have a clue as to why System Update is not detecting the needed drivers?
Has anybody had any success with running System Update 5 on a Windows 7 sp1 64-bit machines?
    Thanks-

Unfortunately right now it appears that the 11.15.16.0 version of that driver does not have TVSU support yet.  Once the content team completes the process of creating and testing the package through TVSU, it will be published for customers.  I'll try to find out where this one falls in the queue. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • There should be a new System Update like good old Software Installer

I believe that there was once a program called Software Installer that was replaced by System Update. I liked the old one because of its clear layout and information: There was a column with software installed, column with current version and column with most up-to-date version of the software. Then you had checkboxes to indicate which programs you want to be updated, check them and start the update and it worked fine. In fact Productivity center still uses similar dialog for installation
What I don't like about System update:
    1. Half of the time the Package server is unavailable. Everybody who ever used System Update knows that.
1a. While the package server is unavailable the packages (I mean software install files) are available through tthe software.
    2. Dowloading 400kb of update list (or whatever) takes forever. At least its the longest 400 kb I've seen on my internet connection. This is especially ridiculous when you can just go to support website and check the updates yourself in seconds. Why can't System Update just comunicate with the website. It serves the same purpose and?
    3. you can't use any of the information from the previous session: I have downloaded graphics driver and it is on the hardrive but it will install only after System update connects to database. I can install it manually but couldn't system update display it as some sort of avaible file?
    4. There are four tabs to display my 3 updates, couldn't it all fit in one window? Also I have to expand the view to see my current and up-to-date version of software. I just click to install and I never notice which version was installed actually. Later when having problems I can't tell which version of software I'm having problems with.
    5. Sometimes updates just dissapear. I once uninstalled Access Connections and since then System Update never showed it as an available update.
The way I see it the System Update software should rewritten almost fully. There is no way that the software that is suppose to help you update the system is slower and less reliable than a user writing down the updates, downloading and installing them through the website.
Having that said I'm not totally negative, for example it is a great  feature is that an update is unatended for a group of updates. Yet it seems that System Update is somehow on the worng track.

  • System Update keeps failing "Package did not download" and does not show all updates

I recently installed win8 64-bit on my X1 (1294-2PG) using a clean install formatting the hard drive. Now I want to use System Update to install right drivers. Two problems occur:
System Updates fails to show all the updates available for my PC in the website. Only 2-3 updates are shown.
System Updates repeatedly fails to download the chosen updates. It seems to download most of the file when the download suddenly halts and I get the message: "1 Package did not download" or 2 or 3 depending on the number of updates.
I have tried for several days multiple times a day and even uninstalling/reinstalling System Update. The errors keeps occurring.

sorry... i can't help with why TVSU isn't successful with this driver on your machine.
as a workaround, you may wish do download it from the X1 driver matrix:

No, we make a silent installation.
I found out after a fresh installation it works.
We have some software packages with are installing a instmsiw.exe before you can install it.
It seems such packages modify the windows installer so it does not work with lenovo system updater.
We have ather probs with Adobe Reader 9 too (on machines with the sytem update prob)
I test step by step our software to identify the "bad" installer version.

    gal9000, welcome to the forum,
have you tried running windows system restore from safe mode? It usually works then because some anti-virus softwares will prevent it from running successfully from "normal" windows.
    Hope this helps.
