Uneven brightness/contrast with new iMac 20" display

Yesterday I rec'd a new Core 2 Duo 20" iMac and there is a major issue with the screen. At the bottom, its contrast and brightness are fine, but at the top it has gradually lost its brightness and contrast. The menu bar looks "dingy". Is this a software (settings) issue or a defective LCD? My iMac G5 20" does not have this problem.
Thanks,
Tony

It seems I have a similar problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=678070&tstart=0), but I bought mi iMac online, on the Apple Store.
Should contact Apple by phone? And... then?
Thanx

  • External Monitor with new IMac

I just purchased the new 21.5" IMac, and want to connect an LG 23" to extend the desktop. the LG has DV-D, D-SUB, and HDMI ports. This may be a really stupid question, but which port on the Imac do I need to connect to?  Thanks.
    JS

Well the new iMac has mini-display out. You can use the fallowing adapters with the iMac:
    Mini-Display To HDMI:
Griffin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with Audio + DVI
Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable with Audio Support (10 ft.)
Belkin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter
If by D-SUB you mean VGA:
    Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
If by DV-D you mean DVI-Digital:
    Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
or the already listed above, Griffin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with Audio + DVI
If you want to use HDMI input, and you don't have a DHMI cable, the Kanex  is adapter is a cable. Witch could save you some money. If you go with another HDMI adapter you may want to pick up a Apple HDMI to HDMI Cable (1.8 m)
The griffin adapter dose both HDMI and DVI. WItch makes it a more versatile adapter.
One of the advantages of HDMI over DVI is that HDMI supports video & audio over a single cable. But if your Display has limited set of HDMI cables, you may want to save the HDMI ports for some thing that requires HDMI, Like a blueray player.
DVI supports some larger resolutions. And if you want to use it for a computer display that could be an important advantage.

  • Using new trackpad with new iMac

Using new trackpad with new iMac, but can't seem to get the "touch function" to work. I still have to press firmly and click on the trackpad to get response. The videos show "touch" while I  "firm press and click."  Checked speed, cleaned it, and reset. No luck?? Ideas? Even took back to Best Buy and seemed to work with their display...

Assuming you are talking about tap to click, you would need to enable it. It is disabled by default. Go to settings and choose trackpad settings. Navigate to "Point and Click" tab and enable "Tap to Click".

  • Apple TV not working with new 23" cinema display

OK so I finally found a functional use for my new Apple TV, which has been sitting unused in my living room. My MacBook Pro already connects to the HD projector in there, so Mac TV is just less functionality and redundant.
I decided the only use I have for a keyboardless Mac interface for just music, podcasts, photos, and videos is the bathtub.
Being the Mac fanboy that I am, I wanted the solution to be all Apple.
So I headed down to my local Apple Store with the intention of buying a new 23" Cinema Display for my Apple TV and an iPod HiFi for the sound. I was dismayed to see them showing off the Apple TV on Sony LCD TVs. Why wouldn't Apple want to sell people a triple-play package and have it set up as a demo? After all, they weren't selling the Sony TVs anyway.
But my first sign of trouble was the very nice store employee who didn't know if the Apple TV would work on a cinema display. But he definitely wanted to find out when I got home. Searching here, I found posts that seem to confirm that it would work, but the actual source is related to an older ADC cinema display, not the new ones.
I set everything up and used a Toslink-minijack adapter to run the optical digital audio from the Apple TV to the iPod Hifi. I used an HDMI-DVI-D adapter to connect the cinema display to the Apple TV. I powered it all up.
I got the white Apple logo on the screen, then everything went black. I used the Menu and + keys on the remote for 6 seconds to cycle through the resolutions. Still all black. I used the Menu and - keys on the remote to reset to factory settings. Again booted into blackness.
Interestingly, while using the + and - keys on the Apple TV remote, the iPod HiFi volume was lowered and raised simultaneously with the moving of the menu selections in Apple TV (I could hear the clicks). What this means is, 2 remotes, each paired to each device, will be needed for proper operation. This is why having too simple a remote is lame.
At this point I am dead in the bathtub water. I drop more money on Apple than it costs to get a new iMac (which is plan B) just so I can give the Apple TV a shot in my bathroom. But it all doesn't fit seemlessly together on first try.
Any suggestions? Could the HDMI-DVI-D adapter be blocking the HDCP signal needed to display an image? Is DVI-D the wrong adapter to use? Any help is appreciated.

I've not been convinced a monitor will work with the tv, but I have to accept the word of those that have had success. I'm not so certain that a monitor is a suitable first choice, maybe if you have one lying around OK, but to buy one instead of a tv is not only a very expensive alternative but even if it works you will have no way of controlling the brightness etc.
Any suggestions? Could the HDMI-DVI-D adapter be blocking the HDCP signal needed to display an image? Is DVI-D the wrong adapter to use?
Possibly, Did you ever manage to repeat getting the apple logo or indeed anything even if only for a few seconds. DVI-D or DVI-I would be the right connector, don't use a DVI-A

  • Why is my brand new iMac 27' display dark?

I just bought a brand new iMac and this is what the screen looks like:
    at full brightness:
    http://uploadphotos.co/images/17459272055549859163.jpg
At lowest brightness the glitch is not even visible:
    http://uploadphotos.co/images/91589219794648838918.jpg
I've taken screenshots and the darkening/glitch doesn't appear in the screenshots so it must be the display itself.
It's the brand new 3.4 ghz intel core i7...
Is there a firmware update or something for this?
Ie, is it a known issue or do I just have a deffective display?
Thanks in advance for any help.

It may be that if you call Apple Customer Support, the Tech may be able to give you a "fix" over the phone or at least help you diagnose the problem.  If you have to ship it back, try to arrange with Apple to have a delivery service (i.e. UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.) pick up the computer at your home with insured shipping both ways.

  • External DVI monitor not working with new iMac 27"

I recently purchases a 27" iMac and i'm trying to get it working with a 3rd party DVI external monitor. I got the Apple mini display port (thunderbolt) to DVI adapter and connected everything via a new DVI-D cable. The iMac detects there is a monitor and even shows the display as it should.. however, the monitor has a large amount of static/snow/noise (red coloured), so much so that the monitor is unusable. There is also a considerable amount of flickering.
The monitor works fine when connected to a Mac Mini with the Mini DVI - DVI adapter, (old set up) so I know the monitor's connection is not faulty.
Also, the monitor connects fine to the iMac when using a mini display - VGA adapter. The problem really seems to be with the combonation of DVI cable and adapter.
Has anyone had any experiences with DVI monitors connected to new iMacs via the thunderbolt port?
(System: iMac 27" 2011, 3.4GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB. All system updates installed, running OSX 10.7.2)

I think that your assessment is right, the ATI must be on for DVI to work (so far I've only tested with an older T61p and the Quadro graphics are always running).  Can't you set the machine so that when docked the ATI is used, but on battery the internal video is used? That would be what I would try.

  • Use DVI PC with thunderbolt iMac (target display)

    Hello everybody,
I'm looking forward to buy the amazing new iMac.
My concern is that I use also a PC (it's my companie's choice) and I would like to use it with my iMac as a second display.
I found articles on the web that indicate target display only works with thunderbolt PC.
My old pc only have a DVI connection.
Is there a way to convert my DVI output to thunderbolt in order to use the target display on my future iMac ?
Does the Apple convert from DVI to Mini DisplayPort is a good way to do what I want ?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Gregoare,
Nope, you can't do any of that conversion(s).

  • Netgear G router compatible with new iMac 27" N?

I'm having trouble getting my bright shining new custom-built 27" iMac to connect to my Netgear G router. I thought the N built into the new iMacs was backward compatible: http://www.apple.com/wifi/80211/
    What say you networking gurus?

It should work fine. It would help to know more details. For example, is the network not showing up under the AirPort icon in the menu bar? Is it showing up and selectable, but not accepting the passcode? Does it appear to connect to the network, but Internet access is not working? Those are completely different issues.
As a method of trouble-shooting, I would try to isolate the cause better.
If possible, try connecting it to the router using an Ethernet cable first, just to confirm the Internet connection is working properly. If that is too difficult due to the relative locations of the Mac and router, you can skip it. But if you find that it still does not work, the cause is more than just the wireless not working.
Try disabling the security on the router temporarily. See if you can now connect. If it does not work, there is general problem with the wireless networking. If it works with no security, then you know the cause is related somehow to the security protocol being used. You can focus trouble-shooting in that area.

  • New iMac not displaying Second monitor correctly... ATI graphic to blame?

I bought a new iMac a week ago, only to find out yesterday that new ones were released. My local Apple Store had no problems allowing me to swap my now outdated iMac for the new one that came out yesterday, and I am very grateful for that.
However, ATI's graphics are not getting along with my dual monitor setup. My display looks excellent on the iMac itself, but on the external 23" HD display from HP, it is all distorted and only shows 3/4 of the screen.
HP does not make drivers for OS X on their displays, since they are plug and play. Therefore, the issue is in ATI.
Anyone else having trouble with this?

    Danny,
It's probably just the monitor preferences aren't set up correctly. Please follow these instructions:
    1. System Preferences - Displays
    2. Using the iMac's display preference click the Arrangement tab and you will see the orientation of the monitors. You will need to choose the left pane and move it around to get the orientation you want. When you choose it both box in the preference and the window on the monitor will get a red band around the outside to help you orient where you are. It takes a little trying but I'm sure you'll figure it out.
You didn't say what you have done to troubleshoot the issue so I'm assuming you haven't looked at the monitor preferences yet.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • New imac ex-display model- can't seem to set up- please help

    Hi Guys
Apologies if im being stupid, but I've just bought an IMAC from Comet (UK Electrical retailer), it was the last one in stock and therefore the shop assistant simply turned off the imac on display and boxed it up.
I got it home, turned it on and seem to be in this demo-mode continously.
I setup internet (wireless) etc and installed my microsoft office software and began transfering a load of files including my itunes library from my old PC.
Anyway, it was time for bed so i put the mac into sleep mode. then decided to turn it back on quickly to allow the file transfer to continue through the night.
However, when i turned it back on, it just went back into the shop demo mode and ive lost everything i'd done e.g. internet connection, office, itunes etc.
Its as if the computer is still in the shop demo mode and i cant get out of it.
    HELP!!
    Cheers

Quick update on where I'm at.
I tried to restore but the CDs were rejected by the computer, so I rang up Apple who said that the retailer must have given me the wrong disks with my imac. I then re-boxed the imac and took it back to comet where, after scanning the CD bar code, confirmed that they had given me the wrong disks. The salesman went off to try and find the correct CDs for my imac but could not find them! Turns out i was given the wrong box aswell, which explains why the cds are not-compatible with my machine. Ive got to order some new disks from apple, which ive done (takes 10-15 business days), and comet have given me £100 back to cover costs..
im a bit annoyed but both apple and comet have been pretty good about the whole thing so fingers crossed all will be resolved once i get my new disks..
    Thanks for your help.

  • 1st Generation iPod (5GB) not working with new iMac

    Hi,
i have the Problem, that my 1st generation iPod is not detected by my new imac (20'' 2,4 Ghz). When i plug in the firewire cable, nothing happens. DiscUtility sees no disc at all.
But when i plug in the iPod "behind" another Firewire disc (acting as a fw-hub), the iPod ist detected within a second, and everything works fine.
I just wanted to know if someone else is having this Problem, or if someone else has a working iPod 1.Gen on the new iMac.
    Thanks
    Joerg

    Hi JvdL,
I am one with a 1st gen iPod (Windows, 10GB).
But I have no problems with it and I also don't have a last gen. iMac.
However, in the iPod Forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=151 and in the iTunes Forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149&start=0#threads there are quite some threads with similar problems.
    Sorry

  • IPod no longer works with Older iMac (works with new iMac)

    Hi all:
First off sorry about the cross post but I got no response to this question in the other forum. Hoping for help from this group. Thanks!!!!
I have an iMac Duo (20" 2.0Ghz) running 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1 which recognizes my 5g (and my wife's 4g) no problem. However when I attach either of them to my G3 (G3 500 MHz) running 10.2.8 (iTunes 6.0.5) they are not recognized.
I believe that the 5G won't work because the G3 does not have USB 2. However, I do not understand why the 4G does not work.
The 4G worked with the G3 for about 2 years. I have not tried to attach it to the G3 since we bought new computers (iMac for me, MacBook Pro for her) until today. I wanted to use it to transfer some files from the G3 to the new iMac.
I have tried forcing the 4G into disk mode and connecting it to the G3 but that did not help (I tried this with the 5G also).
I am using a USB cable with the 5G and a firewire cable with the 4G.
According to software update all of the computers are 100% current.
Thanks for any and all help!
    Gary

I'm no geek but I can say that my 5G video iPod works just fine with my B&W G3 (450Mhz processor), which I am pretty sure only has USB 1. My G3 is running iTunes 7 and OS 10.4.5. Updating may solve your problem.

  • Problems with new iMac and Adobe Creative Suite 2

Just wondering if anyone can help me out. I am a Graphic Design student and just bought Adobe Creative Suite2. I installed it on my new iMac, and it wouldn't open InDesign or Photoshop although I had no problems with Acrobat and Illustrator. A pop-up window stated that the program "unexpectedly quit". I have uninstalled and reinstalled three times and was on hold with Adobe Tech Support for three hours until I finally gave up. If anyone knows what's going on I would appreciate it!

I dragged the installer from the install disk to my desktop and was more successful in installing problem CS2 apps. Make sure to update everything as well. Some times it takes a restart to get the finickiness out of PS.
