Unicode - Amharic '\u1200' + === Is it supported. Useful links apprctd

(cross post 'The Java Forum' - it could be my code)
Help with Amharic characters range: \u1200 to \u137F - does any one know if it is supported?
Have tried various calls as the code below shows. Any ideas please.
import java.io.*;
(method) Exception thrown{
   String unicd1 = new String();
   unicd1 = "\u263A\u1213\u1234\u1228";
   //String unicd2 = new String(unicd1.getBytes("iso-8859-4"), "iso-8859-4");
   //String unicd2 = new String(unicd1.getBytes("utf-16"), "utf-16");   //utf-8 fails
   String unicd2 = new String(unicd1.getBytes(),"UTF-8");
   //String unicd2 = new String(unicd1.getBytes("ISO8859-1"), "ISO8859-1");   // ISO8859-9 failsCompilation is OK, thoutput is always;- "????".

Your code is fine, Which one? Any?I'd try UTF-8 or ISO-8859-4 as the target encoding. It should be able to handle things OK from there. Either way, all you'd have to change is the encoding if it doesn't work. I'd just mix and match until it did. ;D
The problem is in how it's being displayed. Ifyou're
getting question marks, it's a safe bet you're
printing to a console window or something, right?erm ... yes, actually
(Swing/AWT usually show a small rectangle instead ofa
question mark)... and yes, tell me am I a 'typical' struggler, or
are you just highly intuitive?Nah, I've just done this stuff waaaay too much for my own good... ;D
What you need to do is ensure that the consolewindow
you are printing is using the same code page (i.e.
ISO-8859-4). Under Windows DOS consoles, you can do
this using the CHCP command.
Erm, what is the CHCP command? And how do you
impelment the printing env 'same code page' - (just
point me to links with sample code please)CHCP is a command under the MS-DOS Prompt in Windows.
It allows you to switch the code page (or encoding) of the MS-DOS Prompt console. CHCP will take the number of a "Cp" encoding and then switch to use the character set that that encoding uses.
What's a "Cp" encoding, I hear you cry? ;)
Back in the dark ages, IBM specified its own set of encodings for foreign alphabets, all of which have names beginning with "Cp" and finishing with a number (e.g. "Cp1252"). Later on, ISO came up with its own standards, which is why most of the encodings we've been talking about so far have "ISO" at the start. There are many places where the character ranges defined by a "Cp" encoding exactly matches an "ISO" encoding, AFAIK. So it's just a matter of finding out which "Cp" encoding covers the \u1200 range.
The list Java works off is the IANA Charset Registry at http://www.iana.org/assignments/character-sets - be warned, it's huge and not an easy read, but all the encoding names will be in there. Somewhere. ;)
So for instance if you found that the Cp1234 encoding covers the character range you want to display, you'd head to your DOS prompt, type "CHCP 1234", and then anything you output to that console would display your characters.
You shouldn't have to worry too much about having to output to this "Cp" encoding. If you continue to have your code outputting in Unicode, the console should convert everything OK (i.e. Windows should handle the conversion for you, rather than forcing you to do all the legwork in your code).
If you're outputting to something other than the Prompt, it could get a bit curlier. You'd have to go dredging through the help menus of the program controlling your console to see if you can change the encoding that it displays in. A bit disgusting, but necessary. If all else fails, I think changing Windows' default locale might actually switch the encoding it uses by default to display text in console windows with, though I could be wrong.
Right, now I've thoroughly confused the heck out of you, I'd imagine. All that heavy encoding talk and it's late Friday arvo where I am too... my brain hurts... ;D
Hope that helps!

  • Does 785GM-E51 DVI support dual link?

    I am considering buying the 785GM-E51 motherboard which comes with a DVI port (as well as HDMI and VGA of course).
    Will the DVI support dual link?  If so, what is the maximum resolution I could have on the two monitors (say, at 60 Hz with high colour depth)?
    Cheers!
    jcarrete

     Please clarify your question, dual link has nothing to do with being able to use two displays.
    "Dual-link should not be confused with dual display (also called dual head), which describes those situations where a computer is hooked up to two monitors at once. "
     That quote from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface
     That been said I think you should be able to have 2 displays, 1 DVI or HDMI + VGA You can't have 2 digital out at the same time though, DVI + HDMI.

  • Trouble with Z10 backing up using link

    I have never been able to back up my Z10 using Link. I've just updated the software to the latest version of link and it still gets to about 2% (which is more than it's ever been able to do before) and then fails.
    Media synchronisation seems to work fine, it just won't backup.
    I have president's choice recipe box app, but it wouldn't back up before this either.

    Hey rcgnrcp,
    Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
    I would suggest trying a backup without including the application data.  Follow these steps:
    In BlackBerry Link click on the BlackBerry at the bottom and click on Settings at the top.  Put a checkmark for select data to include in your backup files and add checkmarks to all except Application data.  Then click on Back up now.
    Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Cheers.

  • Does a useful link page really help

    I was wondering if I should scrap my useful links page as it
    takes some time to maintain every once in a while. I would like my
    site to be as simple as possible. But does a useful links page to
    other websites really help your site in its position in search
    engines. Thanks.

    > Their linking to your pages will
    Not necessarily. If they are Microsoft or Adobe, then yes.
    But Joe the
    Plumber? Not so much. An incoming link from a poorly ranked
    site has no
    benefit at all. An incoming link from a link farm site can
    actually
    penalize you.

  • Question regarding using links in Discoverer 10g

    Hi All,
    I have a workbook which uses links. The 1st worksheet is connected to the second worksheet using a simple parameter and link. It works fine.
    But when a users saves this report and tries to use the link, Discoverer tries to open the work sheet from the query which I had created and not the one from the worksheet which the user has saved.
    I am not sure if that the regular feature of the Link functionality or if there is a bug/workaround.
    Is it possible to set these reports to open the worksheet from the saved workbook instead of the original one.
    Any help is appreciated. Please let me know if I have confused you.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I've had a look at this on Metalink and there seems to be lots of different bugs with manage links on 10g.
    We build our reports under one user and share it with all other users, easier to manage. We've built some reports exactly has you have and it also works fine. I'll try to resave this as another user and see if we have the same problem.
    For info there are links to several different bugs related to lots of scenarios Here (You'll need metalink access).
    Couldn't find your exact problem in there so you want to raise it with Oracle.

  • Getting error while accessing a webpage by using link local address of ipv6

    Hello,
    I want to access my login.jsp by using ipv6 address.
    when i am accessing my web page by using loop back or localhost6(like the following) it is working.
    http://[::1]:8080/test/login.jsp //for loopback

    But when i am accessing my webpage by using link local address as following i am not getting my web page.

    or
    http://[fe80::201:6cff:fe0f:d7ae]:8080/test
    For the above case is there any solutions????

    Whatever i have mentioned these are correct. My ipv6 address is also correct.From browser only i am accessing.>
    Not a Java issue, then. Your problem I'm afraid.
    But how do you know they're correct? Given that one of them isn't working, I'd triple check it if I were you.

    HI Ana ...
    I had FB working again two days ago, and yesterday in mid-serve Safari just "couldn't find the server" once more...
    That's a different issue...
    First, if you can just use English, open System Preferences > Language & Text then select the Language tab. Drag English to the top of the list then restart your Mac.
    Now for the server issue. Try using Open DNS. That shold help the "couldn't find the server" issue...
    Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
    Enter these numbers exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.
    Try accessing Facebook on Safari now.

    I'm not clear on where you are seeing that text. When I view Google's cached page from the page found in this search
    https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Asitetrail.com%2Faskearth.com
    It doesn't match yours exactly. There is an iframe with a Google map in it in the "Hosting Analysis" section, which in your pasted page seems to be the "Site Server" section.
    Which Google site did you search?

    Does the iPhone 6  support use of bluetooth enabled mouse?

    I'd really like to think so as well, who's using a tempered glass for the screen an a similar film/glass for the backplate that can shed some realistic light on this query? help is much appreciated.
    people tend to get a bit hysterical when they see my uncased 4s, and yet after 2.5 it is still in better shape than everyone else's.....so if that's gonna be the case with the 6 plus I'll be satisfied.
    I understand the 6 (and 6 plus) have a cureved screen and that most glass protectors are a bit dorky and dont go all the way to the end. would ones that go all the way be more fragile and by that endanger the screen or is full coverage better? is there a suggested tempered glass protector for the 6 plus?

    I have the same issues.  I keep getting a "network error" even though my connections are fine.  I have installed Bootcamp fine on another Macbook, but am having major issues with my brand new one.  I have read the support forums where they say to keep trying because the servers are notoriously slow, but this seems a little ridiculous.  Hope I can get some help as well.
