Unicode string now returned from Stored Proc., used to be ANSI.

Using ADO to connect VB6 to Oracle 8 stored procedures used to return strings in ANSI format. At some point in the last year or so, strings suddenly began to be returned as Unicode, unreadable by VB.
Same problem now occurs using VB.Net and ODP.Net; I need to support both VB6 and .NET versions.
Why are strings being encoded differently than before? Has anybody else seen this problem? What can be done?
The NLS_LANG registry entries on the server and client machines match each other. Some of our installed base of customers reported this change, too.
Below are some demonstration code examples.
Stored procedure looks like this:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE MyStoredProc
(sMyMsg IN OUT VARCHAR2) AS
BEGIN
     sMyMsg := 'My test string';
RETURN;
END;
On the VB6 side, my code looks like this:
Dim vParam As Variant
Dim cmdExecute As ADODB.Command
Dim pParam As ADODB.Parameter
Set cmdExecute = New ADODB.Command
cmdExecute.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc
cmdExecute.CommandText = "MyStoredProc"
Set pParam = cmdExecute.CreateParameter("PARAM1", vbString, adParamInputOutput, 0, vParam)
cmdExecute.Parameters.Append pParam
cmdExecute.ActiveConnection = ADOConnect
cmdExecute.Execute
vParams = cmdExecute.Parameters(0)
Result of VB code is that vParams now contains a Unicode string.
Any suggestions as to what's happening, where the problem might be, what to do about it, or where else to post this question (I'm not sure which Forum is the best place to look for answers) would be appreciated.
Is "force SQL_WCHAR" relevant to this problem? If so, what does that mean and how/where do I apply it?

The Force WCHAR option forces the ODBC driver to
report columns and return data as Unicode. If that
is checked, you probably want to uncheck it.But how do I do that? I can't find any documentation for a SQL_WCHAR option. Where do I go to read/change the current setting of this switch?
What character set is your client & database?NLS_LANG, for both machines, is "AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1". BTW, the client is 9.2, but the database is version 8.1.7. I'm fairly certain that the problem also existed when the client was also running ver. 8.

  • Return String from Oracle stored proc using Excel 2003 VBA

    Hi to everyone,
    I've got a problem that remains unsolved for many days. I am trying to return a value of an oracle stored procedure using Excel VBA. It might seem trivial, however it's not for someone, who has never done it before...
    OS: Win XP SP3
    Excel 2003
    Ora Client: 11g
    By trying different things I have noticed, that I could have troubles with the ODBC-connection. Maybe I am not using the right one. To store data returned from select statements I have an ODBC-Connection (Driver: Oracle in XE), which works perfectly, e.g.:
    Sub Extract_Data()
    Dim cn As ADODB.Connection
    Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
    Dim db_name, UserName, Password As String
    cn.Open db_name, USerName, Password
    sql_statement = "SELECT some_text FROM some_table"
    Set rs = cn.Execute(sql_statement)
    rs.MoveFirst 'jump to the first entry in the data list
    Row = 2
    While Not rs.EOF
    'save the data to a worksheet
    ip.Cells(Row, 2) = rs(0).Value
    Row = Row + 1
    rs.MoveNext
    Wend
    End Sub
    Now I need to execute a stored procedure to return a semi-colon delimited string.
    I have tried the following:
    Public Sub obj_class()
    Dim cn As New ADODB.Connection
    Dim strSQL, cn As String
    Dim adoCMD As ADODB.Command
    Dim adoRS As ADODB.Recordset
    Set wb = Excel.ActiveWorkbook
    Set ih = wb.Sheets("InfoSheet")
    cn.Open db_name, UserName, Password
    Set adoCMD = New ADODB.Command
    With adoCMD
    .ActiveConnection = cn
    .CommandText = "S#mdb$stg_da_extr_util.get_all_classes_of_classif"
    .CommandType = adCmdStoredProc
    .Parameters.Refresh
    '------ and here comes the error saying:
    '------ could not find the object in the collection corresponding to the name or ordinal reference requested by the application
    .Parameters("i_caller").Value = "'STG_DATA_REQUEST'"
    .Parameters("i_obj_classif_id").Value = 120
    Set adoRS = .Execute()
    End With
    End Sub
    I did asked on the forum:
    http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=1241667#post1241667
    but unfortunately without success.
    Could it be, that my ODBC-connection is wrong? When debugging the connection string, I find the Provider=MSDASQL5.1.
    I have moderate knowledge in VBA, but absolutely a newbie with Oracle DB. Is there any source of information that can help solving this issue? Looking forward to hearing from you, as I am almost giving up... ;(

    My VBA is super rusty. Does that error come after Parameters.Refresh, or after .Parameters("i_caller").Value = "'STG_DATA_REQUEST'"?
    If it's the second one, you'll need the definition of the stored procedure so you can see what parameters it's expecting. That'd mean you're getting something wrong with the names.

  • Best approach to return Large data ( 4K) from Stored Proc

    We have a stored proc (Oracle 8i) that:
    1) receives some parameters.
    2)performs computations which create a large block of data
    3) return this data to caller.
    compatible with both ASP (using MSDAORA.Oracle), and ColdFusion (using Oracle ODBC driver). This procedure is critical in terms of performance.
    I have written this procedure as having an OUT param which is a REF CURSOR to a record containing a LONG. In order to make this work, at the end of the procedure I have to store the working buffer (an internal LONG variable) into a temp table, and then open the cursor as a SELECT from the temp table.
    I have tried to open the cursor as a SELECT of the working buffer (from dual) but I get the error "ORA-01460: unimplemented or unreasonable conversion requested"
    I suspect this is taking too much time; any tips about the best approach here? is there a resource with REAL examples on returning large data?
    If I switch to CLOB, will it speed the process, be compatible with callers, etc ? all references to CLOB I saw use trivial examples.
    Thanks for any help,

  • Returning rows from stored proc

    Hello, this is the sample from the SQL Developer help to create proc:
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    PROCEDURE list_a_rating(in_rating IN NUMBER) AS
    matching_title VARCHAR2(50);
    TYPE my_cursor IS REF CURSOR;
    the_cursor my_cursor;
    BEGIN
    OPEN the_cursor
    FOR 'SELECT title
    FROM books
    WHERE rating = :in_rating'
    USING in_rating;
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('All books with a rating of ' || in_rating || ':');
    LOOP
    FETCH the_cursor INTO matching_title;
    EXIT WHEN the_cursor%NOTFOUND;
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(matching_title);
    END LOOP;
    CLOSE the_cursor;
    END list_a_rating;
    You have to write a cursor just to display results from a query. To me this is whacked but I'll go with it. So what if you wanted to return that resultset or refcursor so it can be consumed by a calling application or procedure? I tried something like
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE list_a_rating(in_rating IN NUMBER, MatchingTitles OUT Ref Cursor)
    but that's not compiling. How do you return data from a proc or function?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    ktrock wrote:
    Hello, this is the sample from the SQL Developer help to create proc:A very poor example..
    You have to write a cursor just to display results from a query. To me this is whacked but I'll go with it. All SQL you send to Oracle for parsing and execution winds up as SQL cursors in the server's SQL shared pool. You, the client, then get a handle as reference to this cursor that was created for your SQL statement. Using this handle you can now fetch the output of the cursor and consume it on the client side.
    So there is no such thing as not using a cursor - you always use cursors. Many times it will be implicitly as you won't see the cursor workings as the client hides that from you.
    As for DBMS_OUTPUT and PL/SQL... PL/SQL cannot "write output". And time and again (stupid?) people will use DBMS_OUTPUT thinking that is "writing to the client's display device".
    It is not. It is writing data into a PL/SQL variable on the server. PL/SQL variable that consumes very expensive dedicated process memory on the server. The client (SQL-Developer, TOAD, SQL*Plus, etc) can read the contents of this variable and the client can render that contents on the client's display device.
    So how on earth does it make sense to take SQL data on the server (that is structured data and can vary significantly in volume), and write that as plain text into a PL/SQL variable?
    It does not make sense. At all. Bluntly put - it is just plain bloody stupid.
    So how do you return data using PL/SQL? The same way as you return data using SQL.
    PL/SQL allows the complexity of the SQL language, database model and so on to be moved from the client application into PL/SQL itself. The client thus no longer need to know table names, what to join where and when, how to write effective SQL and so on. It calls a PL/SQL procedure with optional parameters. This procedure has the logic to create the required SQL (based on the parameters too if applicable) and return the cursor handle for that SQL.
    The client thus calls PL/SQL, PL/SQL serves as the SQL abstraction layer and does the complex SQL bit, and PL/SQL then returns the SQL cursor handle to the client.
    In the PL/SQL language, there are different data types for dealing with the same SQL cursor handle - depending on what you want to do with that SQL cursor.
    If you want to pass that SQL cursor handle to a client, then you need to use the sys_refcursor data type in PL/SQL. Remember that SQL cursor does not know or care what data type the client (such as PL/SQL) uses to reference it. All SQL cursors in the server's shared pool are the same - how you treat them from a client side (as an explicit cursor, implicit cursor, ref cursor, etc) is a client program decision.
    Also keep in mind that a SQL cursor is NOT a result set. It is not a data set that is instantiated or created on the server that contains the data (or references to the data) for your SQL.
    If this was the case - just how many such cursor result sets could the server create before running out of memory?
    A cursor is an executable program. The source SQL code is compiled into a program called a cursor. This cursor contains the execution steps that the server needs to follow to find the data. The cursor then outputs this data as data is found. The execution plan of a cursor shows how this program looks like.

  • Accessing Data from Stored Procedure using CallableStatement

    I have created a Stored Procedure as shown , IS it possible to access these data inside my JDBC Program ??
    CREATE or replace  PROCEDURE getEmpName(EMP_NUM IN NUMBER)
    is
    CURSOR C1 is select from emp ;*
    C2 c1%rowtype;
    BEGIN
    open c1;
    loop
    fetch c1 into c2;
    exit when c1%NOTFOuND;
    end loop;
    END ;
    *CallableStatement cs = conn.prepareCall("{call getEmpName(?)}");*

    What do you mean by :
    IS it possible to access these data inside my JDBC Program ??JDBC provide/helps to execute a stored proc. when we say executing a proc, it actually executes on DB. So if a proc is written which has in and out parameter. and if does some work based on in parameter and returns the result in out parameter. Here if you mean, like can i read the out parameter and check what it has returned, then yes you can access this data from JDBC.
    CREATE or replace PROCEDURE getEmpName(EMP_NUM IN NUMBER)
    is
    CURSOR C1 is select from emp ;*
    C2 c1%rowtype;
    BEGIN
    open c1;
    loop
    fetch c1 into c2;
    exit when c1%NOTFOuND;
    end loop;
    END ;
    /But in your above proc it has only in parameter, no out parameter and has only select. so you could execute the proc using JDBC.

  • Call Stored Proc using SAP JPA

    Hi
    Can we call stored procedures using SAP implementation of JPA. I had no success till now. I tried to call using named query and native query.
    Thanks
    Vidyadhar

    Hi,
    named queries are made for selects that return objects.
    You might try to change your stored procedure to a function returning e.g. 1 (number) and call it with "select myfunc from dual".
    If you really need named query support for PL/SQL consider to switch to eclipselink. They have extended PL/SQL support in their latest release.

  • Unable to pass the values to stored proc using presentation variable in OBI

    Hi All,
    Need your help regarding in resolving an issue in OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1
    There is an OBIEE requirement whereby two prompts need to be defined.
    1.     Textbox prompt
    2.     Drop-down prompt
    The dropdown values should be populated using textbox prompt. So, we have used presentation variable in textbox prompt and passing the same to select query of drop-down.
    Until this step, the report works just fine.
    Now, the value in both textbox and drop-down needs to be passed to stored proc.
    While trying to pass the values by using the presentation variable, the following error comes-up saying
    Session variable has no value definition.
    Note:Although the corresponding session variable has been set to default value,still the error appears.
    Please advise.
    Regards,
    Prasad

    "Session variable has no value definition" I'm assuming typo error and it should be presentation variable.
    Set default value for presentation variable that may work

    I am not sure where i am going wrong. I have never worked on such complex types before. I want to retrieve the complex table type returned by the stored procedure using my java source code.
    Can anyone please help me out in resolving this issue?. This is very urgent.

    JDBC does not recognise types declared in PL/SQL. This is documented in the Dev Guide. [Find out more|http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/java.920/a96654/oraarr.htm#1057625].
    The only work around would be to build a wrapper which calls your existing PL/SQL procedures and returns a SQL type instead. Obviously not knowing your precise scenario I have no idea how much work this entails for you. It may be worth building a code generator.

  • Building the varchar string to return from a pl sql function

    i'm new with pl/sql and i'm having trouble trying to build the string that i want to return from a function that is inside a package. it seems my problem stems from the fact that i'm trying to incorporate a variable (varchar2) into the string to be returned. below are two attempts that i've made which do not work:
    function test_policy (p_schema_name IN varchar2, p_object_name IN varchar2) return varchar2 as
    predicate_value varchar2(2000);
    user_name varchar2(100);
    begin
    select first_name
    into user_name
    from employees
    where first_name = SYS_CONTEXT('hr_app_context', 'username');
    predicate_value := 'first_name = ' || user_name;
    predicate_value := 'first_name = ' || '' || user_name || '';
    return predicate_value;
    end test_policy;
    Can someone help me with the proper syntax to build my string for the return value? Thanks.

    this function implements the code for a policy i've created. basically, the policy says that when i do a select on the employees table, i should only see a record whose first_name = sys_context('hr_app_context', 'username'). so, when i perform a simple select * from employees, i get an error which says policy predicate has error. i'm pretty sure the error is caused by how i'm building the return value for that function. if i hard code some return value like:
    predicate_value := 'first_name = ''HR''' ;
    the select statement above works fine, and i only see the record from employees where first_name = 'HR'

    Couple of questions to you, off the subject,
    * Why NULL NULL registration?(You already revealed your name at the bottom)
    * Why email at the bottom? This is already a discussion forum.
    To your qn, it is very much possible. It is not something that one can explain in a single thread. It takes your machine setup for JVM, your knowledgebase on JAVA and other things. Please find notes on External Procedure Calls, which should give you a start. If you are running into problems, please come back with specifics.

Up the top it says firefox not responding and a script error block opens asking me to continue or stop script. It give me this same error all the time no matter if I select continue or stop script.

    As far as email sites go. The "Adblock Plus" extension with at least the "EasyList US" filter subscription would probably help. I does block a lot of unnecessary Script files whose sole purpose is to provide advertising. You can of course add additional filter subscriptions or filters of your own.
    There are many extensions that can cause such problems, and you may have to go through your extensions.
    One thing you might do is eliminate Problematic Extensions that you are not using, but mainly check to see how the create problems and you may have to make a choice between extensions. The Unresponsive Script Warning page lists some extensions with problems (thought it listed more) and describes how to check through your extensions to help find which extension is the problem Sometimes the message will tell you.

    Why can't you use a function?
    Suppose you could use a procedure. What results would you want to see from:
    SELECT  my_proc (4, 5)
    FROM    dual
    ;? Why?
    Explain what you want to do, and somebody will help you find a good way to do it.
