Uninstall & Reinstall RAC (10GR2) on Solaris 10 SPARC

Hi,
I'm trying to install 2 node RAC. I got below errors while executing "root.sh" at the end of installation on both nodes.

The permissions for OCR disks on both the nodes were "root:dba" and the disks was accessible across the nodes.
I'm not sure why we got that error.
To over come it, I'm going as below:
- rootdelete.sh on both nodes
- rootdeinstall on node 1
- uninstall using OUI
- remove /var/opt/oracle/*
- remove oracle_home
- remove oraInventory
- format the disks
- reboot the nodes.
Just wanted to know if there's something else that should be done.
thanks

I strongly advise against uninstalling Clusterware without first making a serious attempt to troubleshoot what went wrong and trying to fix the errors. If you unistall and retry without knowing what to do differently, you will have hardly any choice but to repeat the same steps that led to the errors in root.sh

That could be your error right there. The installation instructions say to put the voting disk in the dba group, but to put the cluster registry in the oinstall group. Quoting from page 4-7 of the Clusterware and RAC installation guide:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14205.pdf
>
– The voting disk is a partition that Oracle Clusterware uses to verify cluster
node membership and status.
The voting disk must be owned by the oracle user, must be in the dba group,
and must have permissions set to 644. Provide at least 20 MB disk space for
the voting disk.
– The Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) contains cluster and database configuration
information for the RAC database and for Oracle Clusterware, including the
node list, and other information about cluster configuration and profiles.
The OCR disk must be owned by root, must be in the oinstall group, and
must have permissions set to 640. Provide at least 100 MB disk space for the
OCR.

    That seems to be a contradiction in terms, high availibility and cold backup. When you do a cold backup the database is down and not available. In a primary - standby configuration, you could switch the standby to primary, shutdown the (former) primary and perform a cold backup of it.

    I'm not sure with the solaris sparc 64.
    but the most common problem with Linux x86_64 which I assume probably similar. that type of error caused by
    you have to install glibc-devel-32 bit and libstdc++-devel 32 bit together with your 64 bit. both libraries required by the Oracle to solve the linking problem.

    probably it will help you.
    sorry, this is just my guessing of your problem.

    Many thanks

    Thanks again
    I searched the docs.sun.com for the SC 3.1 support for Oracle 10gR2 on SPARC I could not find this support I found it only for Solaris x86 , also the support for Solaris 10 SPARC I could not find it
    Can you point to the correct release notes or release note supplement that mentions the certification of SC 3.1 for Solaris 10 SPARC also the one the shows the cerification for Oracle 10gR2

  • Recommendations - Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 Containers Logical/Local..

    Dear Oracle Experts et all
    I have a couple of questions for Oracle 10g RAC implementation on Solaris and seek your advice. we are attempting to implement oracle 10g RAC on Solaris OS and SPARC Platform.
    1 We are wondering if Oracle 10g RAC could be implemented on Solaris Local/Logical Containers? I was assuming that Oracle will always link it self with OS binaries and Libraries while S/W installation and hence will need an OS image/Root Disk over which it could go. However, in containers, I assume we have a single solaris installation and configuration which will thus be shared to the containers which will be further configured in it. In such situations how does Oracle instalation proceed? Do I need to look at a scenario where, the global Container/Zone will have Oracle install and this image be shared across to zones/containers accordingly? If it is so, what all filesystems from OS will need to be shared across to these zones/containers?
    Additionally, even if this approach is supported, is it a recommended approach? I am unsure about the stability and functionality of Oracle in such cases and am not able to completly conceptualize. However, I assume there could be certain items which needs to be approprietly taken care off. It will help if you could share observations from your experiences.
    2 The idea of RAC we are looking at is to have multiple Oracle Installations on top of native clustering solution say veritas clusters/Sun Clusters. Do we still need to have Oracle Cluster solution Clusterware (ORACRS) on top of this to achieve Oracle Clustering? Will I be able to install Oracle as a standalone installation on top of native clustering solution say veritas clusters/Sun Clusters?
    Our requirement is to have the above mentioned multiple Oracle installations spread across two (2) seperate H/W platforms,say Node A and Node B, and configure our Cluster Solution to behave as active-passive across Node A and Node B. In other words, I will configure Clustering Solution like VRTS/SunCluster in Active-Passive, then have 3 Oracle installations on Node A, another 3 on Node B. I will configure one database each for each of these Oracle S/W installation (with an idea not to have Clusterware between clustering solution VRTS/SunCluster and Oracle installation, if it works). Now I will run 3 databases thus on each of these nodes. If any downtime happens on any one of the nodes, say Node A, I will fail all oracle databases and S/W accordingly to the alternate available node, Node B in this case, using native clustering solution and I will want the database to behave as it was behaving earlier, on Node A. I am not sure though if I will be able to bring the database up on Node B when resources in OS perspective are failed over.
    we want to use Oracle 10g RAC Release 2 EE on Solaris 10 OS latest/one before the latest release.
    Please share your thoughts.
    Regards!

    1 We are wondering if Oracle 10g RAC could be implemented on Solaris Local/Logical Containers? My understanding is that RAC in a Zone (Container) is not supported by Oracle, and will not work anyway. Regardless of installation, RAC needs to do cluster level stuff about the cluster configuration, changing network addresses dynamically, and sending guaranteed messages over the cluster interconnect. None of this stuff can be done in a Local Zone in Solaris, because Local Zones have fewer permissions that the Global Zone. This is part of the design of Solaris Zones, and nothing to do with how Oracle RAC itself works on them.
    This is all down to the security model of Zones, and Local Zones lack the ability to do certain things, to stop them reconfiguring themselves and impacting other Zones. Hence RAC cannot do dynamic cluster reconfiguration in a Local Zone, such as changing virtual network addresses when a node fails.
    My understanding is that RAC just cannot work in a Local Zone. This was certainly true 5 years ago (mid 2005), and was a result of the inherent design and implementation of Zones in Solaris. Things may have changed, so check the Solaris documentation, and check if Oracle RAC is supported in Local Zones. However, as I said, this limitation was inherent in the design of Zones, so I do not see how Sun could possibly have changed it so that RAC would work in a Local Zone.
    To me, your only option is the Global Zone. Which pretty much destroys the argument for having Zones on a Solaris system, unless you can host other non-Oracle application on the other Zones.
Will I be able to install Oracle as a standalone installation on top of native clustering solution say veritas clusters/Sun Clusters?I am not sure the term 'native' is correct. All 'Cluster' software is low level, and has components that run within the operating system. Whether this is Sun Cluster, Veritas Cluster Server, or Oracle Clusterware. They are all as 'native' to Solaris as each other. They all perform the same function for Oracle RAC around Cluster management - which nodes are members of the cluster, heartbeats between nodes, reliable fast message delivery, etc.
    You only need one piece of Cluster software. So pick one and use it. If you use the Sun or Veritas cluster products, then you do not need the Oracle Clusterware software. But I would use it, because it is free (included with RAC), is from Oracle themselves and so guaranteed to work, is fully supported, and is one less third party product to deal with. Having an all Oracle software stack makes things simpler and more reliable, as far as I am concerned. You can be sure that Oracle will have fully tested RAC on their own Clusterware, and be able to replicate any issues in their own support environments.
    Officially the Sun and Veritas products will work and are supported. But when you get a problem with your Cluster environment, who are you going to call? You really want to avoid "finger pointing" when you have a problem, with each vendor blaming the cause of the problem on another vendor. Using an all Oracle stack is simpler, and ensures Oracle will "own" all your support problems.
    Also future upgrades between versions will be simpler, as Oracle will release all their software together, and have tested it together. When using third party Cluster software, you have to wait for all vendors to release new versions of their own software, and then wait again while it is tested against all the different third party software that runs on it. I have heard of customers stuck on old versions of certain cluster products, who cannot upgrade because there are no compatible combinations in the support matrices between the cluster product and Oracle database versions.
    I will configure Clustering Solution like VRTS/SunCluster in Active-Passive, then have 3 Oracle installations on Node A, another 3 on Node B. As I said before, these 3 Oracle installations will actually all be on the same Global Zone, because RAC will not go into Local Zones.

  • Oracle10G RAC install  on Solaris 10

    Please suggest some good and simple install document for Oracle 10G RAC on Solaris 10 Sparc?

    In my opinion I would not use physical shared storage at all.
    Get VMWare Server, a suitable OS and a big hard disk and one PC with lots of RAM.
    Use this to create your RAC environment. It works perfectly and is much easier than using multiple devices which require multiple network cards and suitable storage.
    I have a Dual Core PC running XP with 2GB RAM. You can get RAC working with 2 VM's each allocated 512MB which will do for learning purposes. This also has an advantage I can take it with me when I am away from home.

  • Uninstall Oracle 10 G on Solaris 10

    Hi,
    I need to reinstall oracle 10G on my machine with same specifications. Can anybody please tell me how to uninstall oracle 10 G on solaris 10.
    important point is that i should be able to use the earlier sid.
    Thanks

    I don't have such a environment but I would recommend as follows:
    Make sure you have your database down before proceeding the uninstallation.
    Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) ---> Deinstall Products
    or
    Installed products --> Remove
    By the way, SID is related to the database itself not to the product installation.

  • I am havign huge problems getting itunes 11.1.4 working on my windows 7 laptop. I have run itunes for some years, and regularly updated it when prompted. I have followed many of the suggestions e.g. uninstalling reinstalling, etc

    I have spent hours trying to get itunes working on my laptop.
    The only functinoality I crave is to be able to get pictures off my iphone 5 (which has the latest ios installed.), as almost all other functinoality of itunes I find painful beyond belief. It has the worst ergonomics I think of any software I have ever used, which is bizarely at odds with the mobile decvices, which by and large work quite nicely (indeed, why I bought them!)
    My laptop runs windows 7. It has all the latest microsoft updates installed (I am religious about this: it always has had.)
    I have run itunes on this machine for some years, regularly updating when I am prompted to.
    A few days back i was prompted to update to 11.1.4
    It failed to install badly. whatever I try at some point during the install process the installer just hangs, or never terminates.
    All communication between computer and iphone functionality has been lost.
    Nothing eles on my machine is behaving oddly. slowly etc. it is only apple stuff that isn't working.
    I googled and found a lot of recurring themes on apple forums:
    So far I have tried:
    uninstalling / reinstalling. (hangs during installation).
    Restarting the machine between uninstall and reinstall.
    Searching and removing any directories/ contents related to apple, after the uninstall, prior to machine reboot.
    I have even used iobit uninstaller, as removing apple software as you know is almost impossible (ever tried disabbling the quicktime updater that runs at startup? it's like a virus !!)
    I have removed all apple software incl quicktime.
    I have tried the microsoft software installer fixit link often posted to.
    i have tried unpacking the apple installation file, using the latest version of winrar, to try installing one at a time.
    I have found the installation is very very very slow (it looks as though it hangs, but i leave it running in the background, after 15-20 minutes, the status starts advancing for example). so far I have managed to install the first few components up to applesoftware  update,msi, and they seem to need to be run multiple times.
    (this last one took about 40 minutes).
    I have been very careful to install / uninstall the software components int eh "prescribed" order.
    I have tried each step multiple times, rebooting the machine numerous times, cleaning temp folders (with ccleaner) etc.
    I ave tried installing when my virus checker AVG is disabled.
    (i have virus checked the machine with AVG and malware bytes, I have the latest microsft security essential updates installed.)
    I ahve tried stopping apple services (as suggested in one of the apple forum posts).
    As you can gather I'm seriously tearing my hair out.
    I presume there is some kind of generic bug in this installer: as a friend had exactly the same problem on sunday night, with a different machine, running windows 7, and a couple of her colleagues at work has had the self same problem over the weekend, though none of them seem to have gone to the lengths I have yet !
    I tried doing a system restore, but my machine seems to have lunched all previous system restore points, so I can't . Arrrrrgggg !
    Is an older version of itunes available so i can install that instead ?
    What should I do next ?

    There is known bug in installing Oracle10gAS infra. You have to apply the following note during the installation.

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation on sun solaris 10 Sparc machine

    Hi there,
    I encountered the following problem during oracle 10g R2 installation on sun solaris 10 Sparc machine
    Error encountered:

    The following were the steps taken before encountering the above error
    1. logged into a workstation
    2. From its xterm terminal I logged to the oracle server via ssh oracle@ip
    3. keyed in the following at the command prompt
    DISPLAY=machine_name:0.0; export DISPLAY
    4. executed the following from the command prompt
    ./runInstaller
    Note: when executing the ./runInstaller, the preinstallation checking just hangs at Checking monitor: must be configured to display at least 256 colors. But the log file shows it failed during preinstallation checking as shown in Error encountered
    Please help me with this problem.
    Thank you

    It is because of UNIX shell. I also faced this error during installation.
    First check your shell by the following command.
    $ echo $SHELL
    Then select the below.
    For csh shell
    $ setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    For sh,ksh and bash
    $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    After you do this check the value of DISPLAY variable.
    $ echo $DISPLAY
    If the DISPLAY variable is set then run ./runInstaller.
    One advice: Keep a complete log of your terminal session. This will help you in future :)

  • Firefox will not open, and I can't uninstall/reinstall because it says "close Firefox first"

    After running Ccleaner today (and it asked me to "close Firefox or the internet cache will not be cleared", but Firefox was closed or so I think), I can't open Firefox at all; double-clicking the Firefox icon on the desktop does nothing, and no other way works. I thought of doing an uninstall/reinstall but it says "close Firefox first" - but for me it is truly closed.

    See if you can Force Quit things holding CMD+Option+esc keys.
