Universal Dock in car

Hey, I just got the new universal dock for my ipod, iphone, etc. I used to have an older dock in my car hardwired to the power wires from a cigarette lighter (12V I assume). Anyways, that worked great! the power turned on and off with the car so I wouldn't kill the battery. I switched that out for the new universal dock and it does not power get any power to my iPod anymore. Does the universal dock require more power because of the remote, etc? I can't find any voltage listing online or anywhere. Somebody help me out!!
-Doug

- Have you reset the dock and car system
- Does the manufacturer say it will work with the 4G iPod and iOS on the iPod?
- The configuration of the 4G iPod is different than previous iPods and on some docks the 4G does not fully seat in the dock.
Sometimes this works
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
However, sometimes, the dock/car system is just not compatible with the model iPod and its IOS.Some suers have reported that an iOS update broke compatibility.

  • Using Universal Dock in a car

I read a suggestion by someone to use a dock for holding your iPod in a car, and using the line out port to plug in a cassette adapter. Since I have a Peripheral Electronics iPod2Car in my car, I don't need a cassette adapter, but thought the dock would be a good way to mount the iPod for easy viewing. The iPod2Car plugs into the dock connection in the iPod, the cable then enters a box with DIP switches, and the final connection is a vehicle specific cable that plugs into the receiver's external CD changer input. Works well and charges the iPod as well as playing it through the car stereo. Yesterday I plugged the iPod into the Universal Dock and connected the iPod2Car cable to the back of the dock. The iPod sat up nicely and powered up. Only problem: no sound. I figured the dock would simply pass the connection on the iPod through the dock to the iPod2Car connector. When I scrolled the click wheel I could hear it through the car speakers, but when I selected a song and pressed play, I got no sound. Am I wrong to assume that the pins on the back of the dock are just like those in the iPod itself? Does the dock not just pass the iPod connections through to the connection on the back of the dock? I had hoped that this would be a great way to mount my iPod and still make use of my direct connection to my car stereo.

  • IPhone (3,3G,4) does not work with Apple Universal Dock.

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch that has been upgraded to iOS 4. My iPod Touch will no longer sync via the Apple Universal Dock. Also, my new iPhone 4 also will not sync via the Apple Universal Dock.

Trust a geek not to give up. I decided to get to the bottom of the "iOS device does not work with the Apple Universal Dock" problem. I noticed that the iPhone 4 and iPad came with slightly different USB-Dock adapter cables. I wondered if that might be the issue. My Apple Universal Dock was connected to my Mac via the original dock adapter cables which are slightly larger. I connected the newer cables between the Mac and the Apple Universal Dock and .... voila! Both the iPod Touch with iOS 4 and the iPhone can now connect via the Apple Universal Dock. Apple changed something in the way the adapter cables function.
Of course I still have the problem with the car head unit dock adapter ... Sigh. I'll have to call Best Buy ( uughh! ) and find out if they'll do the update for me. The were the vendor authorized installer.

  • Universal Dock's remote doesn't work with iPhone Photos

Has anyone tried Universal Dock's remote with iPhone Photos? I can't get it to work.
The remote does work with iPhone music and video though.

i just bought this dock as a car dock. I have it hooked up to power 12v and output to 1/8 into head unit. Now, I have to be in iTunes music to get it to work and it only allows volume, playing of files in a playlist and to next song. Are any of you guys having issues with VERY limited use of the remote and lack of really a benefit from using a remote because you have to touch it anyways to change through songs or video??? Are you guys wondering why you even bought it if the remote is not supported as a functional addition?

  • Universal Dock and Remote

I just bought a Transpod for my iPod VIDEO. I'm asking if the transpod is a universal dock. Also, if i by a universal dock with a remote, can i use the remote in my car?

The dock will NOT allow video out from the nano, although it will allow audio line out, syncing, and charging.

  • Menu Button issue with the iPod Universal Dock with Remote

What is the status of a firmware release to address the inability of the Apple Remote to mimic the menu button on the iPod?
Is it even possible to update the firmware to provide this functionality? What is the hold up? I am boycotting further hardware purchases until this is taken care of or Apple accept s a return of my Universal Dock, Remote, Second power brick, Firewire cable, and AV cable.
It is shameful for Apple to have sold these items and not made it clear that the menu button may as well be a sticker.

  • Universal dock adapter for iPod classic

I am having problems obtaining a MA125G/B Universal Dock Adapter for my 160Gm iPod Classic. Now that all my music library is on the iPod, I am changing the "docks" from my car to my SUV to my home stereo system to a chargeable portable SONY docking station. I have only the one dock adapter #9 which came with the iPod. I live in Canada, and have had my Apple store try to locate a few additional adapters for me, but without success. I see that I can order one on line from Amazon.com, but when I go to purchase it, I am told that it can only be shipped within the US. Is there any retailer out there in Canada from whom I could purchase two or three of these universal adapters?

Actually, I'm not really replying to myself. I just want to confirm that the MA125 G/B universal dock adapter which I found on Amazon.com will be compatible with my 160GB iPod Classic? There is no picture shown with the adapter, and it says it is for an iPod Video 30GB. Is this adapter the one which has the number "9" stamped underneath the lip? I think I may be able to have it shipped to a friend in Fla.

  • Newest version of universal dock appears to be incompatible with my ipod Classic 120 gb.  Remote does nothing

I purchased from Apple, a new universal dock with remote (MC746LL/A) along with the proper dock adapter for my ipod Classic 120.  According to Apple the dock works with any ipod with a dock and adapter..  The remote does absolutely nothing despite a brand new battery.  The only reason I purchased this pricey accessory was to have an additional ipod station with a remote.  I could have saved a ton of money if I didn't care about a sensor on front of the unit.  Any thoughts.

You are in exactly the same boat as I. I have the same problem. I posted a query on this forum too but no help came forth. Looks like Apple could be blocking replies to iPod Classic issues since it withdrew the product. Amazing company. But incase anyone can still access this query, please help. It will help two customers of Apple if not more.
    Awaiting help !!

  • Cable equivalent of Universal Dock ?

    Hi,
What I'm looking for seems quite simple but I can't find it anywhere. I understand the Universal Dock (latest version) is the only one that supports video out using the official Apple RCA cable (which I already have). BUT, I also want to make use of the speaker/headphone socket too on the dock at the same time as pushing video out through the dock. Is there a cable that does this rather than have to use a dock ?
I need this because I'm connecting an 80Gb iPod Classic in a car where I want to route video to an external screen but feed headphones off the iPod for sound (the screen I have has no speakers). I don't want to have to plug two things into the iPod - just take everyone from the dock connector i.e. video and audio. I had looked into an RCA to 3.5mm adapter straight off the RCA cable above but I believe the impedence would be wrong so I need a separate feed of sound for the headphones.
So, in summary, I want to feed video using RCA and sound in whatever form to headphones, but both from the dock connector. Is this possible ?
    TIA

You'll find the pin outs for the dock connectors (there are minor variations between them) here, Speedcheese.
There are only four pins for the audio (two for each channel), so whatever comes out of them is what feeds the lead to the RCA connectors, and , essentially, is going to be the "best you are going to get" out of the bottom port.
A problem that I suspect you may have is obtaining controllable volume output from the audio pins without the additional circuitry provided by the dock itself.
Using the "official" cable (or anything else which simply connects to the audio pins on the iPods dock connector) I suspect you may simply get a fixed level of output (which, whatever the impedance, isn't likely to be much fun with headphones). You can test this by simply using your cable to connect to the RCA inputs on a home stereo system (or the audio inputs on a TV, for that matter) . If the volume control on the iPod itself doesn't change the volume on the stereo in such situations then the output is fixed.
One way to overcome this would be to feed from the RCA cables into a small pre-amp with variable output control, and then run your headphones from there. Depending on your cars audio system you could simply hook your audio output into it, instead. Some also have headphone outputs if you particularly want to use them.
In many ways, though, the easiest solution for you, I reckon, would simply be to incorporate a real dock into the system. The Apple one would do, but there are others out there too. That way you could get controlled audio out and separate video and audio ports.
    Cheers
    Rod
(PS - One cable you might find useful if you decide to go down the path of wiring into your auto's audio system, rather than using a dock, can be found at http://electronics-pluz.com/peipdotorcao.html . In addition to the audio and video out options it adds provision for charging. )

  • Compatibility w/ Older Universal Dock?

I've got the original universal dock. (The one w/ S-Video and the big round IR sensor.) It's not sold anymore (for about 9-10 months maybe) and was made prior to the 3GS. Sometimes when I connect my phone I get a message that says the accessory is incompatible. Other times, I get a message saying that I cannot charge my phone with the device. (I haven't left it plugged in long enough to see if the phone is actually getting power, but I suspect it is...) The dock is USB based and the cable it's using is a standard new 30 pin iPod cable. This has happened a few times over the past couple weeks.
Also, I use a griffin car charger that's a couple years old and I just got a message today that it wouldn't charge my phone. But when I re-plugged it in, everything was fine. The cable works and this is also USB based. It's only happened once in 2 weeks.
For the record, when I use any general cable with my MacBook I've never had any problems. So, I can't tell if it's my phone or something else. I'm mainly curious as plugging my phone back in usually solves the issue.

There have been similar issues reported with various car kits and the 3GS. I have a 2-yr old Griffin charger (cig lighter to USB type) which I used with my 2G and seems to work fine with my 3GS. I don't have any docking devices.
One thread on a car kit suggested using this device as a fix:

I have no idea if it would work or why it should work.

  • Noisy Universal Dock?

I just received a new universal dock w/ remote. The only problem I have is that when connected to a amplifier it makes noise if connected first and then the amp is turned on. If I turn the amp on and then connect the ipod there is no noise. The noise is like a hissing sound, like a dirty connection. I did clean everything to make sure it was not dirt. I tried this with both my iPod touch and iPod mini with the same result. Does it seem to be an issue with the dock? My old mini specific dock does not appear to do this. Anyone else have this issue? Thanks for the input in advance.

I recently bought my first ipod (nano third generation)and I tried to get connected and have been so far successful:
    1) In car - through aux port using griffin itrip; and
    2) At home - to alarm clock JVC RAP-11
HOWEVER I since tried to connect to my separates system at home through the amplifier so I bought an Apple Universal Dock Connector, an Apple USB Adaptor, and Monster cable (to RCA), which I hooked up to my amp.
And I have PROBLEMS. When I play the nano through the Apple Dock Connector I get this intermittent and varying in loudness hissing type noise, sometimes it is very loud. I do not get this noise from elsewhere on my separates system e.g. cd player through the same amplifier/speakers so I do not think it is the amp which is the problem.
I do NOT seem to get this noise when I connect the Nano to the amplifier directly using only the cable and not using the Apple Dock Connector, although this tends to be at lower volume so I do not know if this means there is no noise or if the monster cable is part of the problem.
Any advice would be welcome? Or should I return the Apple Dock Connector and USB Adaptor and Monster Cable (cost total £79!!!)

  • Is the universal dock compatible with ipod 4th generation

Is the universal dock compatible with ipod 4th generation

    Hey there Punk Phil,
It sounds like you are wanting to know if the Universal Dock is compatible with your iPod. If you are referring to the iPod Touch 4th gen, then yes according to this article it is:
    Learn about Apple Universal Dock
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1380
The Apple Universal Dock includes five Dock Adapters that fit iPhone 4 and 4S, iPhone 3G and 3GS, iPod touch (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations), and iPod nano 5th generation. Dock adapters for other iPhone or iPod models are sold separately.  For a complete list of products that can be docked with the Apple Universal Dock, see the table below.

  • Universal Dock Question

last night i made the most expensive mouse click of my life by purchasing a 15 inch MBP and a 30 gig iPod video. today at target i picked up a universal dock for iPods in efforts to keep the player safe and secure.
heres my question...i know the macbook pro comes with a remote and i was wondering if that is the same remote used with the dock?
if so, is the remote is interchangable, how can you order the dock to take commands from the remote. i don't really care about the added functionality of a remote, i just want a safe home for my investment, but if you can interchange the remote between devices, more icing on the deliciously, albeit expensive cake.
Thank you so much for your time,
    Michael

    Hi Lyssa,
Right, the iPod doesn't respond to the Menu button. You cannot navigate the menus in any way with the Universal Dock and Apple Remote.
There are some 3rd party docks available that allow you to navigate through the iPod's menus though, such as...
    Griffin TuneCenter
    HomeDock Deluxe

  • Problem with Apple Universal Dock and Iphone 3G

Just bought the newest version of the Apple universal dock (revision C), so I can have one dock for my iphone and all my ipods.
It appears that even the newest version isn't 100% compatible with the iphone.
When the iphone is connected via the dock, you get no alert sounds such as for new email, text, etc..when the phone rings you DO get audio then.
Also, when you try and sync the iphone with itunes while connected, it won't sync. It just hangs and says "sync cannot be completed"....
Connecting the iphone directly via the cable to the computer solves all these issues.
They advertise this as compatible with iphone but obviously not so...

    Update:
    I've checked this:
-Aux (Dock-Connector) of the iPod has no damage, no problems playing music in the car!
-Same Problem now with iPhone. It gets charged and so, but if I want to listen to music it is very quiet, music is playing for half a second or so, after that stopped, than goes on playing for a second or so. Cracking sounds often while music is stopped.
So the Dock is broken, I guess.
Any possibility to restart/resert or so by my own or try to get it fixed by apple?
    Greetz!

  • IPhone doesn't work with Universal Dock remote?

    Hello,
I received an Apple Universal Dock with remote for Christmas, and I'm pretty sure I remember it and the remote working just fine with my iPhone when I first set it up. Today, I tried using it again, and found that I can't use the Universal Dock's remote for anything other than controlling the volume, and even though I can raise or lower the volume with the remote, the volume change is not reflected on my iPhone's screen - the iPhone's ipod volume indicator doesn't move.
The Universal Dock and remote work just fine with my wife's second generation nano, and the iPhone works without any problems when docked into a Logitech mm50 speaker system - the mm50's remote is able to jump forward and backwards through songs, pause, play, etc. The problem seems limited to the combination of my iPhone and the Universal Dock and remote.
Is this normal? According to the Universal Dock's package and documentation, it is compatible with the iPhone and doesn't mention anything about the remote having limited capabilities when used with the iPhone.
If this isn't normal, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
thanks in advance and best regards,
    tom
