Unmounting Filesystem Failing

After the recent initscripts upgrade, whenever I poweroff or reboot my EeePC 901, the root filesystem is not unmounted, and at reboot the disk is fscked.

All of the daemons are successfully reported stopped (including Laptop-mode which I stop with a script in rc.local.shutdown when on battery: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 14#p930314).
The laptop is completely up-to-date. How would I go about diagnosing what is preventing the clean shutdown?

Hmm, nothing at all stands out here, and we we explicitly don't unmount API filesystems or anything else mounted on a RAM based FS. I'd be curious what's running right before the call to umount. Just before line 55 of /etc/rc.shutdown where everything is unmounted, can you stick in a call to ps and lsof?
/bin/ps aux > /ps.out; /usr/sbin/lsof > /lsof.out
Unrelated -- you don't need those /dev/{pts,shm} entries anymore. They're mounted by /etc/rc.sysinit. Also, your home should have a passno of 2, not 1, meaning fsck it after root. (reference fstab(5)).

    After modifying my time/date setup (setting the hardware clock to UTC, and using a custom timezone file) I started to get a [FAIL] message during boot (after the system had resynched to drive times to the system time), and shutdown.

    Nothing seems to be negatively affected, and the boot and shutdown processes continue without even pausing, and sda4 (my /home directory) certainly seems to by mounted (since I'm using it now).
    I've run fsck at boot a couple times, but the drives keep coming back clean. I've tried using my old timezone setup, but the fail message persists. I've successfully unmounted and mounted sda4 as Root, trying to generate an error message of some kind, but all I get is a successfully unmounted, or mounted, drive. I've unmounted sda4 priod to shutdown as well, but the message persists.
    The only place in the logs the [FAIL] message shows up is in /var/log/boot:
    Mounting local filesystem   [BUSY]  [FAIL]
    I'm at a loss. I would like to fix this, if only to be sure that it's not a symptom of a larger problem. At the very least, I'd like to know what is causing it.

    You interpret correctly, Logicien. BIOS is set to UTC; HARDWARECLOCK="UTC". Time and date are a-ok.
    I ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26, but the message persists. I also tried using the live cd, and mounting each of the drives in turn. All of them mounted successfully, with no error messages. To verify that it is sda4, I commented the sda4 line out in fstab, and rebooted the machine. I got:
    Mounting Local Filesystems [FAIL]
    but none of the Ext3-fs stuff, and the boot process continued successfully. I'm wondering if it's something else.
    I'll try adding quiet to the kernel boot line later this evening and see what that brings about.

  • Unmounting ASMlib driver filesystems failed

    Hi,
    I have tried to stop ASMlib and unload module oracleasm
    #oracleasm exit
    However I am receiving the error:
    Unmounting ASMlib driver filesystem: failed
    Unable to unmount ASMlib driver filesystem
    I have running ASM instance.
    My main question is:
    I have read that you do not need ASMlib for ASM (it is just an optional support), so why when I want to stop it it is not possible?
    Note: I have tried to do so on the system without ASM instance running - actually no grid, no DB is installed, just ASMlib, and it was ok - I could do exit without any problems (sure, ).
    If someone could give me an explanation what is going on, or what am I missing in ASMlib and ASM instance relationship I appreciate it so much.

    And how it is connected with the ASM instance - I mean ASMlib, why it cannot be unmounted while ASM instance is running?
    I thought that ASMlib is used for device management - labeling, connecting to /dev/oracleasm so it has not 'real' efect on ASM itself. I think it is just preparing devices for AMS so this is why I do not understand why it cannot be umnounted. Like separate process helping to user/admin deal with the devices, not helping ASM itself.
    I am not against ASMlib (I will try udev, but ASMlib is simplifying things - at least for me )  - I saw there are many discussion, it is not my case, just wish to understand clearly.

  • Problem unmounting filesystems when rebooting/halting after upgrade

    I just installed mkinitcpio 0.6.8-2 and util-linux 2.19-3 from testing repo and when i reboot/halt my system either with my custom kernel26-ck or kernel26 from core i get an error when unmounting filesystems saying:
    "/dev/sda3 busy remounting read-only"
    /dev/sda3 is my /home. After several reboots i noticed that 2 weird files(strange unreadable names) appeared in my home, so afraiding that something is wrong with the filesystem i rolled back the packages (mkinitcpio, util-linux-ng and my old kernel26-ck). Now everything is fine again with both kernels,
    I'm writing my experience here because i do not know which of mkinitcpio and util-linux may be responsible for that problem. If anyone has an idea it would be nice to inform me so that i open a bug report.

  • Unmounting filesystems

    Is it just me, or other people also have random problems unmounting filesystems when the computer shuts down with kernel 2.6.12.2-1 (stock)?
    With 2.6.11-10 there were no issues, now the puter randomly hangs when unmounting at the end of the shutdown process (maybe one time out of three). Even more annoying, whenever this happens, when firing the alternate OS on my dualboot system (WinXP) it prompts for filesystem sanity check at startup.
    Is there something NTFS-related changed on that new kernel? I could not find some useful info at kernel.org.

    Either way, Did you post a bug in the bug tracker? If you didnt, the developers never knew this problem existed. Few ever read the forums.
    If they did know it had existed, they would have found a patch themselves and released a new kernel, or waited till it was solved in vanilla. Relative to other issues, this is minor, and probably wouldnt deserve a mention on the front page.

    I very hesitantly applied the kernel that is posted above to have the patch. Everything is now working fine but the fact that I had to apple a rouge kernel is what bothered me. no worries, Ill live

    I am running a CentOS base VM on top of Hyper-V server. I upgraded PV drivers of Hyper-V in linux kernel 2.6.32 in order to support
    Windows Server 2012, then i am hitting below issue on Windows Server 2008 when kernel switches from old PV(which is 2.6.32 based) to new PV(which is equivalent to linux integration component 3.4).i
    am hitting following filesystem check error messages :

    The superblock could not be read or does not describe correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
    filesystem(and not swap or ufs or something else),then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:

    Also, when I go to the repair filesystem mode. I found out the strange behaviour when i ran those command :

  • Solaris cluster 3.2 with zfs failover filesystem failed. How can I recover?

    I have just install and configure Solaris cluster 3.2U3 using zfs for both of root filesystem and shared storage file system.
    This cluster operate clearly. Today, I can not see the zpool for shared storage. I can see the storage volume in the output of format command.
    So all my resources change to offline status. and my application is failed.
    How can I recover this cluster??????
    is there any body can help me :(

    Have you used a SUNW.HAStoragePlus (HASP) resource to control your zpool? If not, the zpool is probably needs importing. That is what the HASP resource would do for you. You would also need a dependency from your application on the HASP resource to ensure that your application does not try to start up before the storage is avaialable.

    In the process of verifying my HD in the Disk Utilities routine, I received the following:

    (It should be 800686 instead of 800687)
    INVALID VOLUME DIRECTORY COUNT.
    (It should be 188276 instead of 177275).
    The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
    ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    The button "Repair Disk" is grey and inoperable.
    I have 70 GB free on a 300 GB hard drive.

    This is a way around the no Install disk problem for running Repair Disk. Get Applejack and run Repair Disk. Once fixed, run Repair Permissions from there. I would run it several times until you get an OK message. You won't see the App. It runs from Single User Mode, CMD-S at the startup chime. Very simple to use; just follow the prompts.

  • (Solved) new install on jfs filesystem fails with vi

    I just tried to do a fresh install from the 201307 image and found out that the colon in the vi package will not download onto an jfs filesystem.
    Sad since jfs has always been my choice since using mythtv package. It seems to work faster especially deleting large files.
    I guess it's onto ext4 then.
    Not sure if this should be reported as a bug. Just to inform

  • Filesystem failed to verify or repair

    I have tried to use boot camp on my MacBook Pro, but each time it starts to partition the harddrive it will fail and tell me to verify or repair the file system. If I attempt to verify I am told that there is an error and I must repair the harddrive. However, the repair option is not available.
    Now, here's the weird part. If I boot up from the CD (or have an apple genius boot up on one of their external hds) they system has no errors and repairs fine. But if I go back and try again on my hd it fails with the same error.
    I would like to figure this out, and I don't have the $100 to spend on DiskWarrior on the off chance it will fix it. My understanding is that this is probably bad data or a hardware issue? Help!

    I was going to recommend that you Defragment your HD however that would require you to buy some software to do so (which you don't wish to do and that is fine).
    One other recommendation, based on what you already have, is to reformat your entire HD and install leopard and then run boot camp. Of course, this means that you will have to spend the time to install Leopard and all of your applications (and documents) one more time.

  • Unmounting root fs fails on shutdown

    since a few days my root filesystem refuses to umount on shutdown claiming it were busy. On every bootup a recovery is done which bothers me. The failing umount suggests using lsof to find the process causing the problem. I switched to runlevel 1 and did so, but the output is not very helpful for me...

    I noticed one thing, but that's not to say there's not other problems too: your syslog-ng is still running. At that point in shutdown, I think all your daemons including it should be shut down. I don't know why it's still running. Do you just launch it by putting "syslog-ng" in your DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf? It's possible that you're not really getting an accurate picture here of the state of your system at shutdown. I debug these issues by hacking /etc/rc.shutdown. Before the "Unmounting Filesystems" block you could do a
    lsof / # I think this is the way to display only open files on the root filesystem, but you should read man lsof to be sure

  • Filesystem check failed, but filesystems are clean

    Im running custom kernel and this might be related to it, but Im on my wits' end here and looking for pointers.
    The problem is, Im getting filesystem check failed every time I boot my system. And it gives no apparent reason
    for it to happen. I have fsck'd my partitions many times and they are clean. My hwclock is in time and rc.conf is set
    to 'localtime'. The problem didn't occurs on the previous kernel (2.6.18) I had, so I've been using its running config to
    compile the new one (2.6.23). The thing is, the previous kernel works fine, no filesystem check failed in boot. Only
    difference between those two is I had to enable HOTPLUG in the newer kernel to get udev working, otherwise it would
    complain about failing netlink socket in initscript.
    As a temporary solution, I commented out the filesystem check from the rc.sysinit and it boots further. This time
    it fails to mount my /boot/ and /home/ directory and fails to activate my swap. Effectively only root is mounted, but
    after logging in, "mount -a" works without any problems and I can use my system normally.
    I have compiled all(?) the needed modules to the kernel, so initramfs shouldn't be needed, but I've tried it anyway, no
    luck there. The system is build with 2009.08 core install disc, no packages updated as far as I recall.

    Full system upgrade gave me the same issue. Even after udev downgrade (udev-142 is the latest I can use with 2.6.23).
    Edit:
    Changed my fstab back from by-uuid to hdaX, didn't help. Strangely all hdaX are in /dev/ after boot, but the symlinks are missing.

  • Rc.shutdown doesn't seem to umount the filesystems correctly

    The problem is that each time I shutdown/reboot, there's a message saying "Unmounting Non-API Filesystems" failed, and the next time system boots, fsck will recover journal. I looked into etc/rc.shutdown, found that it calls umount_all in etc/rc.d/functions. I made the following changes to umount_all (just add some echo to record infomation in /tmp/permanent/umount_all_log):

    it seems that tac does not work when shutting down...
    have anyone of you ever experienced such problem? and do you know what's the reason?

    but i also have the following lines in the script:
    echo -n "which tac: "
    which tac
    and the output is:
    which tac: /usr/bin/tac
    and when i do not actually shutdown/reboot, the output is right.
    if i run the following script without root privilege, i got the expected output
    $ cat test.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    . ./functions
    umount_all
