Unsharp video

I've just purchased a Logitech Quickcam Vision Pro and am a bit disappointed with the video quality - it's not sharp. It's not a bandwidth problem as it's not sharp using video preview when I'm not involved in a chat. When using it with PhotoBooth it's much sharper!

iGlasses may help.
It comes as a trial to test it.
When Installed it works in many Applications not just iChat
In iChat the Settings are accessed when any Video pic is up so the Preview by clicking your own Video icon will do it, from the Video Menu
It has two lines that are in fact a pull out drawer and Sharpness is in there.
(you can save any tweaks as your personal Preset).

• The Adressbar font looks very unsharp, i tried to edit the size and looked into the options but found nothing. it isnt sharp at all..

As i stated the adressbar looks very unsharp, and i tried to edit it or fix it in anyway, but nothing happens. in 3.6 and chrome it is sharp and i have no problems

Update the video display driver to the latest version.
You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox 4.0:
Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: [ ] "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You can also try to set only the gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled pref to false on the about:config page.

• Loss in video quality

Hello all,
I wrote a program which display several screens one after an other in a loop.
One of these screen displays a video using JMF. The first time this video is displayed the quality is perfect but the second time and the next times the loss in quality is awful : the video is very "pixeled" and very bad-looking.
Here is the main part of the code I used :
public Screen3() {
try {
File file = new File(Main.gui.screenPath5.getText());
Player p = Manager.createRealizedPlayer(file.toURI().toURL());
Component c = p.getVisualComponent();
catch (Exception e){
GraphicsEnvironment ge = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();
GraphicsDevice gd = ge.getDefaultScreenDevice();
public void play() {
p.start();
JFrame jFrame = new JFrame();
jFrame.add (c);
jFrame.setIgnoreRepaint(true);
jFrame.setUndecorated(true);
gd.setFullScreenWindow(jFrame);
}Each time I want to display the video, I create a new instance of Screen3 and I launch the method play().
The first time it is perfect, then it is bad... Weird isn't it ?
If someone can help me, I would be very grateful.
Thank you in advance.
Best Regards.
Gregory Pierre.

You'll want to create a new comp that's the size and frame rate you want for your web video. Then Drag your full sized comp into the new one and scale it to fit. Make sure that the X and Y scale values are equal. You may also want to do some cropping here. If you then need a little sharpening you can do it here by using an unsharp mask. Now render your new comp.
I almost forgot to mention that if your video footage is interlaced you have to make sure that you've separated fields. You can't move or scale interlaced video without significantly softening the image.

• Sony pmw 200 unsharp

I use a sony pmw 200.
If i import the clips in premiere CC and make a seq, (same as source) theindicator of the timeline is yellow.. so i have to render the clips.. they are even a bit unsharp when i play them.
I heard some folks saying the codec for the PMW200 is different then the EX3 codec
I also used Xdcam transfer but without good result.
Will there come a solution? or upadat for this problem?

• Improving bad video ?

Somebody knows out there an app that is able to enhance a bad video like a 3GP for instance ?
Something smart enough that is able to do the trick and add quality by extrapolating between 2 frames or 2 lines for instance ?

You can use sharpening tools like Unsharp Mask. You can use third party up-rezzing tools to increase size with better quality.
But, realistically, given you only have a camera recording of a video screen of the CCTV, it's very unlikely you'll ever extract much meaningful detail from it. Don't believe TV shows, image enhancement is not really so advanced.
Personally, I'd just extract the best still frame of their faces you can find, then use Photoshop to zoom and enhance as much as you can with Unsharp Mask.

• Unsharp Mask on Adjustment Layer crushing whites during fade?

I'm using Premiere CS6 with video footage from a Canon T2i. However, the issue appears regardless of the video source.
When I apply a Film Dissolve to a clip in the timeline, then add an Adjustment Layer with an Unsharp Mask on a track above the clip, the whites in the clip appear to become crushed over the length of the transition, while still fading to black. This does NOT happen if I use a Sharpen filter instead of an Unshark Mask, and if I apply the Unsharp Mask to the clip directly instead of using an Adjustment Layer. Fading with another clip looks normal as well, the whites only get crushed when fading to black.
If the problem had to do with the Film Dissolve processing in a linear color space, then I would expect similar results with the Sharpen filter. Likewise, if the problem had to do with the Unshark Mask, then I would expect to see the same thing when it is applied to the clip directly.
Any ideas? I appriciate the help!

Looks like a bug. Thanks. I'll escalate it.
Workaround looks good, so thanks for that too! Nice find.

I think it has to do with blend modes, but can't say for sure.

• Video time stamp

Anyone know if it's possible to put a time stamp when recording video with the iPhone 4?
I'd like to be able to see the date and time of when the video was recorded, sort of the same way as on a regular camcorder.
Thanks!!

Hi
If You have the original tape and Camera - You turn of the feature on the Camera
and import via an analog/digital converter (or if Your Camera has digital FireWire out)
If You got Your material digitized with date&time stamp. Sorry - only way is to
make this area fuzzy/unsharp = as bad as if it is as it is.
Alternative: If You use iMovie'08 or FinalCut Express or Pro You can enlarge the
picture slightly so that the time&date stamp goes out of the viewable area.
But still often a bad solution.
Not even Pro companies as ABC and shows like AFV can magically erase this.
Recommendation: Make a new digital copy but this time with the time&date stamp
turned off. Absolutely the most pro-approach.

• How to adjust a video to match the resolution of the existing composition?

i am using adobe after effects cs6.

You can scale to fit horizontally by selecting the layer in the timeline and adjust the scale property or use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Ctrl/Cmnd + Alt/Option + H.
If the video is larger than the composition you should be good to go but you may be able to improve the look of the scaled down video using unsharp mask. If the video is significantly smaller than the composition you might want to use a 3rd party plug-in like Red Giant Instant HD.
After Effects CC introduced Detail Preserving Upscale which also helps with the upscaling problems.

• Sharpening video in Premiere CS3

Hi all,
I was just wondering what kind of success you all are having using the sharpening effect in Premiere CS3?
It appears that its only useful at very low levels before it starts to create visible artifacts.
Are there any procedures, plugins or standalone apps that do a better job?

Sharpening can be a touchy subject. A little can go a long way, and too much is easy to attain.
One workflow that I employ, when visual Sharpening is needed is to first add Neat Video and adjust it accordingly. Afterwards, I'll then use Unsharp Mask, judicially. The reason for this two-step process is that Neat Video reduces the video noise (essentially the "grain" in the image), and then the Unsharp Mask is able to "sharpen" the footage without sharpening the video noise. I think that Neat Video still offers a trial. It used to be time limited only, no watermark, but check this out, as I have owned it for years, and have not seen a trial in that period of time. Render times will be impacted, but on my workstation it's not bad - maybe an extra cup of coffee, or two...
Good luck,

• Audio stops playing partway into mpeg4 video

I recently added an mpeg4 video into my itunes library. It plays just fine in itunes. However, when I try to watch it on the ipod, the audio disappears half-way through the video. The video does continue to play in its entirety, but without sound. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have the same problems. I am using Adobe Premiere to output an uncompressed Quicktime Mov and since I cannot control the bitrate with Quicktime Pro when converting to iPod format I now use VLC to convert to a iPod compatible file. Up to now I use mpg4v with 1024KBit as Video and mpg4a with 128KBit as Audio. I output a quicktime mov file.
When I convert the video with Quicktime Pro using custom MP4 settings so I can play the file on iPod I get video glitches every 10 seconds when the picture gets like a washed effect and gets very unsharp.
It plays fine in iTunes and Quicktime but when playing on the iPod the audio just stops after approx. 15 minutes. Happened with 3 different Movie files. Everytime close to 15:20 into the video. All 3 Videos are very different in total length.
When encoding the initial Quicktime File I use Apple Photo JPEG for uncompressed video and QDesign2 Audio encoding.
Is there any step that might indicate a problem in the whole process?
Since we got a couple of iPod here, we also had the same problem on every other one we tried. All use the 1.2 Firmware and iTunes 7.02.
Any help appreciated.

• DV-PAL unsharp text

Hi!
This same question is also in iMovie thread as the example movie was originally made in iMovie. The same problematic situation is sometimes true also when working with FCE, so I post this question here also, as via this thread it is probably possible to reach more expertized/experienced people.
So
In the animation that I made in iMovie, and exported it to DV-PAL, the text is unsharp. When exporting this same DV-PAL file to MPEG4 file, the texts becomes sharp.
But when these two files were watched in PowerBook, the text was not unsharp in either of them.
http://koti.welho.com/tsuonio1/PAL-MP4-text.jpg
And as a surprise, when same files were watched in PowerBook, the DV-PAL file was as sharp as the other one...
Why is DV-PAL image quality very poor in other computer and OK in other?

I do not have TV or video monitor, so before asking this same question here again, I took a PowerBook and connected it to TV/LCD projector to see if the image is better in there.
The surprise came when I opened the same file in PowerBook, the image quality was perfect...
Quality checkbox is probably in my PowerBook by default set in high, and in PowerMac it´s differently...or something like that...
...anyway...
*High Quality* option removed the fuzzines from the titles.
Thank You very much!

• Help... how to make video sharp & clear???!

now my video is blur one how can i make it sharp & clear?

Make it a dream sequence.
EVERYONE knows dream sequences are supposed to be unsharp and unclear.
In fact, add some digital noise and the earthquake filter (simulates hand held unwatchable home movies) and you could be headed to Sundance!

• Import jpeg photos unsharp

Want to create a video film consisting of HD video sequences and single photos (jpeg). When importing photos (high quality & resolution )those become unsharp. What i am doing wrong. Can someone help me? Many thansk in advance. Best regards heide

SInce you want an HD output file, I assume you've set your East Setup to one of the AIC presets: for example, 720p. What are your video clips…where they shot progressive or interlaced? You can verify that your settings match your video clips and are correct by hitting command 0.
You will probably need to render your stills after you edit them to the timeline. After render, they should appear sharp in the Canvass viewed at 100%.
Good luck.

• Photoshop CS5 64 Extended, Freezez After Filter-Unsharp Mask

Hello Every One.
Something very strange is happening, When I click on Filter-Sharpen-Unsharp Mask, suddenly, Photoshop Freezes. I have never had this problem before very strange. When I use the regular Photoshop CS5 Extended It works ok.
Thanks
Simon

There are two things you can do, one of which stands a good chance of clearing the problem:
1. Update your display driver from the web site of the maker of your video card.
2. Clear Photoshop 64 bit's preferences by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt immediately after cold-starting Photoshop. If you're quick enough, it will prompt you to delete your current preferences.

• Video resolution with Sony Alpha 7 is very bad

Hi!
The Videoresolution in PSE 13 Organizer is very bad. Looks like the Videos were made with a cheap mobile-phone.
Video playback works fine with every other Programm on my PC, for example VLC or Media Player, but when i try to view these Videos with PSE 13 they look awful - unsharp and blurry - same in Premiere Elements 13.
Have already tried to install Codec-Pack for Win 7, but no changes.
Maybe PSE uses a wrong codec? If so, how can i change this?
Camera is Sony Alpha 7, OS is Win 7, Graphichs card is CPU-built-in Intel-HD3000(don´t know if this matters?) with newest Drivers.
File extension is .mts, format is AVCHD (1920*1080) full HD.
*edit: maybe it´s helpful if i mention that CPU load is about 30-40% in PSE 13 compared to ~6% when using VLC or Media Player when playing these videos.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.
edit*
after some research:
let me clarify the problem: is there ANY WAY TO CHOOSE THE CODEC PSE 13 uses for videos??

Hi,
It is by design and we have no option to change it.
However, we can use Pan Control to enlarge and move around the screen.
Pan Control: The pan control enables the screen to be enlarged and moved around.
Enable the pan control: Tap the pan icon in the connection bar to display the pan control and zoom the screen.
Use the pan control: Tap and hold the pan control and then drag in the direction you want to move the screen.
Move the pan control: Double tap and hold the pan control to move the control on the screen.
Disable the pan control: Tap the pan icon in the connection bar to return the screen to its original resolution.
Thanks for your understanding.
