Overall the phone is good with this firmware u can look around on these boards for the bugs people encountered with it so far. No hangs and crashes so far but i cant vouch for it.

What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

First i should say these are just suggestions, NOT FOR EXPERTS, JUST FOR USERS!!
In my view point almost all the XM nokia devices have MUSIC buttons, Hense with the touch interface, "IF" nokia can give, Small music Buttons on idle screen, ONLY when music play in background, that would be great, (may be as a drop down menu)
In idle screen, when plays music, volume keys doesn't work. "IF" they can be activated for the task it would be great.
When Scrolling music Library, contacts, etc its bit hard to find what am looking for at once, as it scroll controll seems bit too fast, BETTER "IF" scrolling speed control method is used.(As in other branded touch devices)
PRELOADED SKYPE "PLEASE"!!
ANIMATED MENU ICON OPTION- As an option, Animate the menu ICONS AS IN ORGANIZE MODE (it zooms when selected), better if this added as an option, since some users may not like it.
MOST OF ALL, LANDSCAPE HOME SCREEN.

Here's my two cents (I'm using firmware v20 - vodafone branded).
* Internet radio - the built in FM radio sucks.
* Landscape-able home screen.
* 360 degree rotation (like iPhone - although copyright/patent restrictions may apply).
* Predictive text on full-screen-keyboard input (maybe "select word" & "next word" keys).
* Minimizable realplayer (currently stops when loses focus).
* Faster, smoother transitions (apparently better in v21).
* Customizable media bar - add 3rd party apps (there's room for a further 2 apps).
* Multi-item clipboard on media bar.
* More icons on home screen shortcut bar (up to 8 icons on two lines horizontally centered & padded).
* Better stability (less lockups).
* Reduced memory card corruptions (the 8gb that came with the phone has corrupted twice due to phone crashes).
* Decent A2DP support (doesn't keep cutting out).
* Ability to use built-in IM on WiFi as an option (there's apparently a workaround available).
* Customizable folder icons (for example Games folder).
* Easier scrolling on lists (use vol up/down to scroll?).
* Diagonals on virtual d-pad (e.g. pressing left and up is impossible in java games).
* JSR-256 (sensor api for java - ok, it's available as a beta plugin).
* Better power management (apparently improved in v21).
* Tabbed web browsing.
* Ogg vorbis support in media player (I'm sure a DRM wrapper is possible).
* Gapless playback in media player.
* Egg timer function in alarms - I don't want to do maths when cooking a pizza.
* HTML support in messaging (I tried Nokia messaging - it's appalling).
* More stable WiFi (occasionally doesn't connect or connection corrupted).
And please, enforce providers (vodafone, o2, etc) to keep firmwares up to date (i'm thinking of changing the product code on mine as i've given up on voda releasing updates).
Apart from all this, it's a fantastic phone - I'd rather this than an iPhone any day.
P.s. Get these sorted and make it more accessible to develop for and you've killed the iPhone (in Europe/Asia anyway).
P.p.s. An "unified" operating system model could be applied - seriously, the N97 is pretty much a 5800xm with slightly better hardware specs and a keyboard - this would reduce bugs and development resources.

Cannot Update Nokia 5800 Firmware

I own a nokia 5800 on t-mobile UK. I'm on a mac so cannot use the device update software. I entered *#0000# and tried to update it. However I got asked to create a new server profile. I read some 'default' nokia server settings on another forum and entered them but received a message saying server not responding. I've tried some other server settings I found but none of it works. I really would like to update it! Help me please!

You could take it to a Nokia Care Center and they'll update it for you. Problem free for you. =p

5800 firmware update v60 slide to unlock not avail...

I updated my 5800 to v60 yesterday and I saw in several fourm that slide to unlock feature is available with this new firmware update. But for me when i press the menu button earlier i used to see the screen get lit for sometime. But after the update I am not seeing it and even the slide to unlock feature is not available. Is there any way to enable this new feature??

I tried updating to v60 through Nokia suite, but just as about the installation is about to start, it says "Cheking if you already have the installation files on your computer" and then i get an error saying something went wrong (with code 12017)
I tried NSU, PC Suite, Nokia Suite (reinstallation as well), a soft and a hard reset but im still unable to update to v60, although it is available in the OTA(update via pc) and also in the Nokia Suite.

Unfortunately you will need to visit Nokia Care Point for "language pack" to be installed; this appears to have been done previously with earlier firmware on your 5800XM, but unfortunately software update servers deliver firmware appropriate to the seven digit product code on label below battery which appears to be from a different region. Bear in mind on a pre-owned device that actual product code recorded electronically might not tally with the one on label.

Trying to update my 5800

For 3 hours I'm trying to update my 5800.
Tried with OVI suite, no luck, moved to PC Suite, again, no luck.
30 times.
This is absolutely ridiculous, can't Nokia make it harder? Or, maybe, don't provide updates at all?
This way, I spent half of my day here, to no avail, trying to do something that is impossible.
Note to NOKIA: Update Software DOESN'T WORK. Ok? Got it?
Now, a important question, who wants a 5800 Xpress Music with 3 months of use that doesn't accept updates? So I can go and buy a phone, a real phone.

To find what the latest available device software is, you’ll need your device’s product code. The code is printed on the white label beneath the battery (e.g. CODE: 0520001).

Serious Problem after update my 5800 with 40.0.005...

Yesterday,I updated my 5800 with FW 40.0.005. I really impressed with the new easy way of move in touch screen but this version has a big problem that I considered.
First,you have to set as a ring an .mp4 file or any video file and then lock your mobile 5800.
When you have an incomming call the screen isn't working normally and it stops for miliseconds and starts again!
When it happens the power of mobile increasing sharply and I am upset what it could happen if the call continue too much.
Please somebody check it as soon as possible because it may do harm to our mobile by any explosion from this problem!
For temporary solution a suggest not to set video files as a ringtone and if you want to do this don't lock your mobile which helps the video file to work normally.

there are alot of bugs in v40 and its is discover by the ppl like you. I Have MY nokia 5800-d1 with the RM-356 type having SWV:21.0.0.25.

NO RDS IN Radio Option (It was there in previous all version till V30&31)
Radio application can't be exited in the end
some application icons are multiplied like in previous firmware version
Thumbs of contacts on HS are loading too long
listing files in Settings/App mgr/Installation files takes way too long too
The screen won't turn off when you plugged the power. Same that it won't turn off after you unplugged from power.
Applications cannot be uninstalled. It says "Unable to start the installer" or something like that the radio application could not be quitted

Using iTunes 10.5.2.11 on a PC running 64 bit Windows 7
First did a full back up of iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour.

I decided that maybe doing a Restore on my iPod would maybe sort it out however i got that message "The iPod could not be updated because the firmware file was corrupt." when trying to restore. I then searched apple and found out that deleting the 'iPod Software Updates' folder would sort it out, it didn't.
Now what's happening is when i try to restore it comes up saying i have to download this iPod Software 1.2.1 for iPod so it downloads and then when it's finished i'm still getting the error message saying the firmware file is corrupt.
What can i do now? any help appreciated please.

I just received my iPad yesterday and I saw there was a new update to the OS(from 3.2.1 to 3.2.2). I tried to install it and after downloading the 450 MB file it gave me the error "The iPod "ipod name" Could not be updated because the firmware file was corrupt", so I tried it again and again got hte same error; so I tried researching and saw several possible solutions, including re-installing iTunes, so I decided to try it on a different machine, same error. I don't want to keep downloading huge files, so I'm wondering if anyone knows some possible solutions? I've tried this on both a Windows XP and Windows 7 machine.

Hi, I had the same problem: firmware was corrupted on the update. I managed to fix it by logging in to my administrator account and leting iTunes do a reset. I have no media or apps on that iTunes account so it was relatively straight forward. Once reset and update was complete I logged back into my user account and let my usual iTunes account reinstal all my media and apps.
Be sure to backup your iPad before doing a reset.

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro,it is Mac OS X version 10.4.8, i am just wondering whether I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel)?
I also tried to install MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2, however it says the computer doesn't need to install it. And I checked my Boot ROM Version is MBP22.00A5.B00. After the update it should be: MBP11.0055.B08 (MacBook Pro 15 inch). So I don't know what to do?

You don't "need" to install anything. If you think you can benefit from the updates then go ahead.

If it came with 10.4.8 preinstalled, then you do not need to install it.

Nothing. If it says the update isn't needed, then it's already been applied at the factory.

Should I update my SMC firmware?

I use YES method to keep my both cores runing in its full speed over 7 seven minutes and returned no any random shutdown. Should I keep updating my SMC firmware?
My Macos is 10.4.6 and SMC is 1.4f8. I didn't have any update since this July.

Holding CPU at full load for 7 min without a problem does NOT justify that you don't need the updates. RSD usually takes time to develop. Despite of all the application updates, 10.4.8 and SMC firmware 1.4f12 are the two things you must have. They will make ur macbook run cooler by changing the fan behavior so you won't be pushing the limit of ur macbook as much as before.
Don't hesitate. I know some people think getting updates might not be a good idea after reading so many posts here. But keep in mind that this is a forum for us to report problems. The guys who never had a problem with their macbooks (which i tink is the majority) may never post here. Updates are not supposed to cause any problem, otherwise they wouldn't be released officially, don't ya think? If you did run into problems after update, it's ur macbook that is wrong, not the updates. It'll be better off that you just reinstall the whole OSx and get all the updates to obtain a clean system.
