Update to latest version makes it impossible to lo...

I saw that my version of Skype was going to be retired and I'd be unable to sign in again if I kept it, so I (reluctantly) updated it, having trouble updating through Skype itself and having to download the setup to update it.
Once it was updated, though, I managed to automatically sign in through my Microsoft account, and saw that my Messenger contacts were all gone, so I tried to sign out, and back in, but for some reason I can't sign into Skype at all, only getting a "Sorry, we couldn't recognize your sign-in details. Please check your Skype Name and password, then try again.", when I didn't even use my Skype Name. I tried to sign in on my Microsoft Account in my browser, and it worked perfectly, so it's Skype's problem.
I'd be grateful if someone could assist me in this, and maybe help me see why I didn't have any Messenger contacts when I signed in the first time after updating.

What version of Windows are you on (XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 )? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

What is the version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer?
In Internet Explorer go to Help -> About Internet Explorer.
P.S. Please, don’t say that you are not using Internet Explorer. This is irrelevant. Skype depends on Internet Explorer.
