Updates via toolbox vs system update

I just installed a newer version of Thinkvantage Toolbox (6.0.5717.35) that Thinkvantage System Update found for me.
It started running and it notified me of another update. So I click and it showed me another update available to Thinkvantage Toolbox (6.0.5717.37).
So I ran Thinkvantage System Update again, and it does not show me this update.
So I'm wondering...why do they have different ideas of what the latest update for me is? Why are they not the same? Which one is correct? Is the Toolbox update newer and intended to replace the System Update?

I'd like to add that the "toolbox update" I'm talking about is the one that checks automatically for updates when you launch the toolbox and the one that runs when you click the green ? icon in the upper right and choose "check for updates". However if I click on the enormous System Health button and then choose "Latest Software and Driver Updates", it actually launches System Update 4.
It occurs to me to wonder if that first update program is not ONLY to update Toolbox itself. The labeling of the menu item that launches it, and the title of the window when it runs ("Lenovo Update") certainly does not make this clear if this is case.
Also I went ahead with the toolbox update, letting it install 6.0.5717.37, and I find that this update does not appear in the installatation history viewable in System Update 4.

Looks like updates via the App. store update option is not working again. Comments?

There are a number of other threads from people reporting a problem with a blank Updates tab in the App Store app - it looks like there is a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.
Some posts are suggesting that you if you go into the Purchased tab in the App Store app you might be able to update the apps from there, though you will need to scroll through the list to find those with updates and individually update them.

  • ThinkVantage System Update 5.02 problem -- System Update hangs or freezes when installing KB updates

Often after installing a KB update, System Update will restart the computer and then resume processing to install the next downloaded KB update.  However, after restarting, it always freezes or hangs part way through the next KB install.  After waiting 5 or 10 minutes, I click on "cancel."   System Update acknowledges cancellation but nothing happens, and when I eventually give up and select "End task" in Windows Task Manager, I am informed that "This program is not responding."
Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up.  I have resorted to downloading and installing these KB updates one-by-one after a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit on my T400 model 2764CTO.    Service Pack 1 is installed and Microsoft.NET Framework 3.51, which satisfies Lenovo's requirements.  I am running BIOS 3.11 and plan to update it, but would like to solve this problem first, as I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update!
Anyone else having this problem, or any solutions?

DID you get the machine from someonelse, outside of  Lenovo? DID you upgrade the original o/s?
    what o/s?

KB are offered by microsoft, not Lenovo/su.  Under a rare condition, SU will offer as KB.  A known instance, where microsoft offers HOTFIX, but not for monthly update distribution.  Lenovo has their version of this KB. Probably this HOTFIX fixes a problem in Lenovo land driver that needs the hotfix.
I am amazed at how many KB fixes show up for your machine!!!

Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up. << assumption, please docment.<<<
Always update your BIOS 1st, the Net frame (v4?). Then try the update land.

As I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update
Dont BIOS update during a rain storm. or power fauilure.  Always use a ISO (cd) version of this.  Download/burn this version  in case.  Then use the other version, Update from windows. (you now have a backup).
Please research your hardware install guide, as too how to RESET BIOS eeprom.  Get tweezers, change the jump prom clip. BIOS flash from 0. Jump prom clip back.   Is this scary, yesl jumper is on mother board.
    so
    1 3 5
    2 4 6
Plastic jumper is 34 56. Change to 1234, and you reload a bios from blank. You can enter UUID, serial number and fun stuff.
Do not loose the plastic jumper. Turn the a/c off. Have reading glasses.  But this is the solution to what if BIOS update freezes.  Also have a ISO backup of the previous  release  of BIOS on CD.

    Hi,
    go to :
    %ProgramFiles%\Lenovo\System Update\session
and check whther you have following folders there :
    system
    temp
    billboard
and if also following files are present:
    QuestResponse.xml
    updates.ser
If all is present, then jsut do following:
    - delete System update + make sure, that also following folder then does not exist:  %ProgramFiles%\Lenovo\System Update
    * reboot the machine
    - install new version of System Update
Let me know if that makes any change.

  • Airport Extreme Update via Apple's Software Update

Apple just released an AE(n) update via Software Update.
Maybe this will fix some of these problems!

Okay, dummy me actually loaded the update twice. On iMac #1 I ran the "update s/w" from the upper left apple icon and had no updates available. Thinking security update 2007-002 was for the base station also I downloaded and installed. On iMac #2 I also ran "update s/w" and noticed 3 updates needed (iTunes, something else, and security update 2007-002). Led me to think, yikes, on the first machine I must've "double banged" the security update on it. In the aforementioned MS world, that can lead to problems, what doesn't. Any thoughts on impact of loading this (or any) update twice on a Mac?
Thanks (and you can stop laughing now too )

  • Hard Drive upgrade problem (No applicable update data was found) system update v2.53

go here with full detailed and working steps:
    http://www.problogbooster.com/2014/01/no-applicable-update-data-was-found-ps3.html

I tired it all , this what worked for me : FIRST turn ps3 in to safe mode:Step 1: With the PS3 on turn off the power by holding the power button on the front of the unit till the power light is red.
    Step 2:
       1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.
       2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
       3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off.
    Step 3:
       1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PS3 to power on.
       2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
       3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep.  At that point release the Power button.  If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."
       4. Connect a USB cable to the controller and the PS3 and press the PS button to enter Safe Mode.
       5. Then you will see the Safe Mode menu.   Next : download ps3 update on playstion website , and put into usb stick: make sure its lile this :  PS3/UPDATE/XXXXXXXX      XXXXXXXXX is the file you downloaded, and ps3 and update need to be caps, after safe mode out usb for controller in first ONLY, do not put usb stick with update in yet, then after in safe mode go restore setting, this will take you back to the page where you need to put your ps3 controller on again, then it will ask you for update, THEN you put usb stick in, and folow on screen. i tired everything, this way it worked for me, safe mode then update, make sure usb is phat32 like always,

  • System Update 3.16

Hi, I have an issue with with System Update 3.16 running under Vista and XP.
I have done a clean install on a T43 and T61 laptop and installed System Update however when I run the program it reports that there are "No Applicable Udates For Your System".
System Update was working on these machines up until about a month ago.
Has anyone else experianced this? If so how can I solve this problem.

You state a "clean" install.  Was this a Factory Recovery using the Lenovo service partition or did you use a windows install DVD? You state both vista and xp. Are you the original owner of the machines?
For the T43 and T61 state:
    (1)exact model of each, ie T43 2668
(2)operating system installed on each, 32 bit or 64 bit currently
(3)factory shipped operating system, if you know it
It could be your machine is update to date. Did you run windows update prior to running System Update?  Windows update could have installed most of your drivers.
You need to go the Lenovo support page, enter each machine.  Then filter the list by operating system, and see what shows up. Any new updates you think System Update should be offering you?
Locate the SU run log and post it here via a file share utility, such as www.dropbox.com.
    For XP:
    c\Programfiles\Lenovo\Systemupdate\logs\tvsu_*timestamp*.log
    For VISTA:
    c\Programfiles(x86)\Lenovo\Systemupdate\logs\tvsu_*timestamp*.log
    >>If I did not get the above correct, just search C drive for      tvsu_
    ===
If your MODEL  shipped from Lenovo, with ONLY an XP offering, you will not get Vista updates at all via SU.
(I can confirm this by looking at the SU logs).
The SU catalog page is model number+operating system type.
I suspect you took a XP only machine and installed Vista via a Microsoft DVD.  Your feedback will help.

  • T410 - Sound card stopped working after Lenovo System Update

    hi all!
yesterday I performed a system update trough the ThinkVantage System Update 3, I chose a complete update (even the BIOS).
After the update, the sound card is not working anymore: everything in the control panel looks fine, volume is up and all's connected, but no sound is coming out, with the exception of the skype system sound when starting/quitting the application...
No system restore is possible (it looks disabled by our IT dept), updated the drivers via windows update, but no help.
    Any clue?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
What follows is guesswork on my part...
That 1157 error code translates to:
One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found.
On the TVSU 5.06 page (here) under software requrements I see:
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 with Service pack 1 or Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 is required for System Update to work Correctly. Use Microsoft Windows Update to ensure that Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 or 2.0 is installed on your system.
Do you have an appropriate .NET installed?

  • System Update 5.02 problem

    Hello,
We have bought two brand new ThinkPad’s L430 2468-3RG with pre-installed Windows 7 and with Window 8 Pro on the DVD. We have made upgrade on the Windows 8 Pro and installed all Windows Update.
After it, we wanted to install Lenovo updates so I started System Update, choose all available updates then system wants restart. After reboot I started System Update again then it shows message "System update needs to be updated". I pressed update and System Update start installation. During installation process system shows message I attach.
Now I am not able install System Update even from installation file manually downloaded from Lenovo website.
Is there anybody who can help me or had similar problems? On the image is text explaining parameters of msiexec command.
    Thanks. Ondrej

So today I have tried this:
    1) Reinstall system into factory state
    2) Download latest system update instalation file from lenovo web pages
    3) delete su service
    4) Install new version of system update manualy
On the second computer I have tried this:
    1) Reinstall system into factory state
    2) Run system update and install all updates
    3) restart computer
    4) run lenovo solution center and try update it
Result is I have the same errror on my screen. Any other ideas?

I have this same problem, and asked this same question in this and another forum (had no responses). Thanks for the insight that it is likely not our system's problem. I wish this were not marked as solved though. I still can't use system update. Maybe those with warranties still in effect are getting a solution from customer service(?). Frank

  • System Update 3.14 install fails on action: SetVendorValue

    Hi, folks:
I'm attempting to install System Update 3.14 for the first time on a 2004-vintage ThinkPad T42 type 2379-DXU. The immediate failure appears to be that the action "SetVendorValue" fails. I'm not sure what the underlying cause is. The installation terminates with an alert that installation failed and the system is unchanged; but in fact the System Update application is installed and there's an icon in my Start menu. When I try to run System Update, it displays an error message in front of the splash screen and quits.
Details and log excerpts below. Can anyone figure out why the install is failing? How can I get the install to succeed and the System Update app to run successfully? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
In the meantime, I'm going to try downloading individual drivers manually, to solve my underlying problem. But I'd sure like to have System Update on my side in the future.
    --Jim DeLaHunt, Vancouver, Canada
     Details* run the installer "systemupdate314-2008-5-15.exe".
    * installation proceeds through several steps. Shortly after the "Writing vendor value" status message appears, the installation fails with an error alert saying that that installer cannot complete and the system is unchanged.
    * in fact, there is now a c:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\ folder, and a System Update icon under Start menu -> All Programs -> ThinkVantage -> System Update.
    * clicking the System Update icon in the start menu causes the program to launch and fail. The splash screen appears, then an alert "System Update could not start properly [OK]". Clicking [OK] causes the program to exit.

Well, the problem is solved, and System Update is installed and working.
The root cause of the problem appeared to be that the registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE no longer extended "full control" permission to the Administrators user group on my machine. We fixed this by using regedit:
    Start... Run... regedit....
    select directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, right-click, Permissions...,
    press Add... button
enter SYSNAME\Administrators in the text area (SYSNAME is a placeholder for my actual machine name)
    OK... OK...
    Quit regedit
We diagnosed the problem with the help of IT support from our employer. The problem was blocking installation of new anti-virus software. We had just removed old anti-virus and "internet security" software. Hmm, I wonder if the old security software removed this permission setting as a parting gift.
Hope this is helpful for others who encounter the same symptoms.

  • System update configuration issue with local repository related to machine type

    Hi,
Sorry if the issue has been posted earlier, i tried searching but cudnt find relevant post. Here is my issue:
My machine is Thinkpad R52. Type as printed on label is: 1858-CLG
While adding machine type in update retriever, I added machine type as 1858 (as it doesnt accept 1858CLG). After connecting to the support site, it downloaded all required updates onto a local(shared) repository.
I installed system update, configured it to pickup update from local (network) repository in the registry.
Now when I launch system update, it determines my machine type as 1858CLG & it connects to local repository only to display message as "No updates were found for this machine type"
Though I cud see updates if I directly connect to help center.
I think the problem is with machine type identification, not sure though.
Please advice on what I'm doing wrong. Is it with update retriever configuration or system update configuration.
    Thanks much,

Solution for me was to change status of packages from "Test" to "Active" using Update Retriever.
Since this is not documented in Best Practices (but is stated in chapter 5 - modify settings) I spent several hours figuring it out..
