Updating developer tools

This is going to sound like a really basic question, maybe even dumb, but is there a way to update all of your developer tools? I was just on a thread where Xcode 3.1 vs. 3.2 was being discussed, and I checked my version only to see that I still have 3.0. I've always relied on Software Update to update all my software, but I guess it doesn't update the developer apps. Now, I know I could go online and download the new version of Xcode, but then what -- do I have to go and one at a time do the same thing with Interface Builder and Dashcode and Quartz Composer and all the utilities and what not, or is there a way to update them all at once? Thanks!

So to make sure I have this right, I would simply go and download the Developer Tools from Mac's web site just like I would do if I were installing them for the first time, and then install them on my computer and it will do the rest for me?
Yes, if all goes well. You pretty much just click Install and it's the installer's job to get everything in the right place.
How does that work -- does it just overwrite the apps that need to be updated and leave the rest alone or what?
An installation tool is often more complex than the software it installs. The process can be extensive, and usually is for a dev tools upgrade. Some installation programs tell you what they're doing, and you'll see that they first scan the environment to determine whether you have the correct hardware and OS. Then they'll look to see if an older version is installed. If so, the installer might move some files, delete others, and leave some unchanged just as you surmised. Most of that work will be completed before any new files are installed.
One word of caution:... Always wait until you have a real need for some feature in a newer version.
... the only thing I worry about is that I don't know enough about the features available to know if a newer version might have something that might be helpful
A lot depends on what you're building with the tools. If you were currently developing iPhone apps, you'd probably have a need to upgrade your tools every few weeks because the target system is changing so rapidly. If you were developing OS X apps, you would be watching for new features, but OS X is a relatively mature system, so it's not changing as fast as iPhone OS. This means that an OS X developer might consider an upgrade every few monthes instead of every few weeks.
If your primary purpose is to learn programming--perhaps first in C and then Obj-C--your work isn't likely to be affected by minor version numbers, or even major version numbers for that matter. For example, one of your recent threads was about C99. Implicit in that discussion was the fact that the most recent upgrade to the C language was 10 years ago. This tells you that a change from Xcode 3.1 to Xcode 3.2 will probably have zero effect on the work you're doing right now. Even when a new version of Xcode also brings in a new version of the C compiler, gcc, the kind of change involved isn't likely to interest you. You could learn C with a compiler that was 30 years old and do just fine. Obj-C might change a little faster than C, but for your purposes, it's not going to be a moving target.
When you start studying Cocoa and especially if you get interested in learning about iPhone programming you might need to worry more about upgrading simply because the Mac and iPhone Dev Centers are constantly purging the older guides, reference docs, sample code, etc., and replacing these with resources that apply to the newest systems. Similarly, you might buy a book on programming that refers to tools that are newer than yours. But you'll know when that happens.
Don't upgrade your tools every few weeks just to find out whether you're missing out on something. Right now, what you're missing out on is lots of time and effort spent making new installations work, and then learning how to use those new tools. Just about the time you discover what some little icon on your Build Results window does, it will be moved to a new hiding place in your new version of Xcode.
Btw, Xcode 3.2 is only for Snow Leopard. I think the newest version for OS X 10.5.x is 3.1.3. So if and when you get Snow Leopard you'll have to get new Dev Tools. Until then, I doubt you need to bother, especially if you like your current environment and--best of all--everything is working!
Hope that answers your questions.

  • Update developer tools

How can i update "Developer Tools"?
I need a most recent version of some GNU software (bison and automake, for example), that i had install through DVD's of Mac OS X.
    P.S. sorry by bad english

Could you provide the URL specifically, I'm having trouble finding the developer site.
    Thanx.
Search for "xcode tools" without quotes at the
developer site. You will need to register in order
to obtain the most recent update (2.2.1.)
Have you installed the version on your Tiger DVD?

  • Installation-development tools

I am on a look out for a installation development tool for windows.
Requirements :Should be easy to use and update for patch release. It should automatically create desktop icons, do any registry entries if reqd, automatically install and launch JVM.
I think most of you who develop applications in java must be using some or the other tool for creating executables. So can you send me some suggestions on products avaliable and their popularity.

I want to clarify that I am not looking for tools for application development. I have already developed my application. I want to create windows executable which I can use for installing my application on my endusers' m/cs.
    Anyway, thanx for your response.

  • Quartz Debug (Developer Tool)

I downloaded and tried to use Quartz Debug, a developer tool (not actually included in Xtools: I downloaded it as a stand-alone).
My goal was to improve screen resolution on screenshots (for use in KeyNote). It seems to have corrupted my system (not sure: did a clean reinstall eventually). Has anyone had experience iwth this program? Is it safe or unsafe to use? (I assume it modifies the system: I thought it would only do a temporary modification).
It could be that you need to download XTools first then run the program (it never responded correctly for me).
And it could be that I should be in the Developer Forum, but I don't have permission to post in the appropriate group.
    Many thanks. JIP

The developer's tools are on your Tiger DVD, you don't need to download them unless you want to download the update to the most recent version. The Quartz Debug tool is not part of CHUD.

  • How to uninstall Command Line Developer Tools

Hello, After upgrade to OSX Mavericks by mistake I downloaded Command Line Developer Tools. I'm not a coder, just a graphic designer and I'm not gonna need it. It's about 300 MB size and I don't want it. The worst part is that its the second time Apple Update shows a new update for this. If I try to move Library/Developer/CommandLineTools folder to trash I'm asked to provide my admin password, so I don't do it because I'm affraid to harm my OS. I've been searching on the web for an answer close to my case but only found uninstall tips related to Xcode that don't apply to me. Can you please help me to get rid of this Command Line Tools? Thanks a lot in advance!

Do it. It will not harm OS X, and you will be removing the Command Line Developer tools. Nothing will happen to your Mac, but you should make a backup of your files before modifying system files.

  • Illustrator CC Plugins: CC DEVELOPER TOOLS?

    I just had a nerve-wracking experience.
I've used FontAgent Pro (Mac OS X 10.8.4) for years, and have come to depend on its exellent font management capabilities. But today, I began to have trouble with a particular font. The font is in perfect condition (no errors reported or repairs needed - it displays perfectly in the Finder) but even though it was activated like all my other active fonts, Illustrator CC couldn't SEE it, so I couldn't USE it.
I restarted the computer, but this didn't help. Then Ilustrator began bombing (with the full error log), and it became impossible to run Illustrator CC at all.
So I uninstalled Illustrator CC, and downloaded it again and installed it again. But it still crashed on app start.  :-(
So I decided to run it from my bootable backup drive, and it ran FINE. At this point, I ran it again from my primary boot drive and it ran FINE. Go figure.
In the mean time, I contacted Insider Software (makers of FontAgent Pro and plugins for Adobe apps), to see if they were working on an update to be more compatible with Creative Cloud apps. They are, BUT ... apparently Adobe hasn't released the "CC" DEVELOPER TOOLS yet, so they CANNOT finish their "CC" update of this indispensible plug-in.
    Um, what's going on, Adobe???

Same here. But for me InDesignCC is the problem. Didn't go to your lengths, but did clean every single cache with CacheCleaner and deleted relevant FontAgent preferences, which has always worked in the past. All to no effect. Reduced to using FontBook and thinking about upgrading an old version of Suitcase …

  • Forms development tool /server which render a pure html interface at runtime

    Hi,
I have heard of a 3rd party tool which uses same Forms development tool with a pure html rendering at runtime with modern web application look and feel. • To use ADF with other Development tool

Can I plug the the ADF framework into other development tools such as the IBM's[b] websphere studio and Borland's JBuilder?
(Currently neither the WebSphere Studio nor the JBuilder, to the best of my knowledge, has the capability of the ADF has. Basically, with those tools you have to write a lot of codes to do the database updates, etc.)
    Thanks.

ADF is a bunch of Jar files and the application is a bunch of Java and XML files - so yes you can take this and use any IDE to edit the files.
But currently JDeveloper is the only tool that has the visual development environment for ADF.

  • XCode App Store download and developer tools packages

So I have been installing the Developer tools since Mac OS X Tiger. They were always on the DVD and then once I became a member I could download the entire dmg from the developer website.
Now XCode is distributed from the AppStore. I had XCode 4.2 installed and once the update to XCode 4.3 was available I went to the AppStore to update it and everything seemed to be different. The XCode app is now just dumped into the Applications folder and it asked me to remove all instances of XCode 4.2.
    So here is my question:
When I buy a new machine and want to install the Developer Tools (as I did with the previous versions) where can I get all the Developer tools? They don't seem to be installed with a developer dmg anymore. I can't get them in total from the AppStore? Can I get the same packaged tools as was on the older OS X DVD or the Developer site for the new XCode 4.3+ ?
How are the developer tools going to be distributed to us from now on? I know I must have missed something along the way, some email or notification.
    Any explaination would be great.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

All that 'stuf' is now either part of one bundle/app or available via prefs...or gone.

  • Can we use SQL developer tool to READ/WRITE BerkeleyDB by any means

We use Berkeley Db as a persistent database, which holds data less frequently changed data. Can is it possible to use SQL Developer tool or any other front end tool that can connect and communicate to Berkeley db file for INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE records.

I assume you're referring to Berkeley DB SQL (BDB SQL API).
SQL Developer is not certified to work with BDB SQL; see the SQL Developer Certifications page.
Something similar was asked some time ago, about connecting JDeveloper to BDB SQL; see this Re: How connect Oracle JDeveloper 11g to Berkeley DB 11g. The SQL tools in JDeveloper and SQL Developer are similar and built on the same components, so my answer there can be extended to SQL Developer as well. While you can probably have SQL Developer properly connect to a BDB SQL database, I am afraid you won't be able to do more than just viewing the data; likely any attempt to generate DDL or DML statements, export data, or run DML statements against the database will fail.
If you migrated to BDB SQL from SQLite and were using a front-end tool for SQLite, it should be possible to use that with BDB SQL as well.

  • Qt development tools take a long time to load

Hello everyone! Since the latest qt update I have noticed that all the qt development tools (creator, designer, assistant, etc) take a really long time to load up and their behavior is sluggish at best (for instance menus take a while to show up). When I start designer from the command line I get this error
Qt at-spi: error getting the accessibility dbus address:
"Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."
Accessibility DBus not found. Falling back to session bus.
After this the application needs a solid minute or two to show up. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Have you experienced similar behavior?

Same issue here after update to Qt5.
QtCreator with Qt5 starts a lot slower than before with Qt4.
Also i have notice another issue.
All commands that requires mouse double click such as:
    > open a closed project's source/header/ui file
    > browse files to add in resources
    > select/edit resource item
    > browse source files to add to project.
    etc.
now all these commands activated by single click.
I solved that problem by recompile QtCreator against Qt4, and this strange behavour became past.
[EDIT] Also with recompiled QtCreator, the problem with slow startup solved too. [/EDIT]
Anyone have this problem too ?
Is this an issue related to Qt5 ?
