Updating with pacman fails

I am trying to run a pacman -Syu and get the following error.
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: virtualbox-guest-utils: requires X-ABI-VIDEODRV_VERSION<15
Is there a way around this?

Yes, it is quite unacceptable. Those lazy developers are clearly just wasting your time by not devoting enough of their spare time to pushing out packages immediately.
I'm on this forum because I've been wondering about that pacman message too.
I know where you're coming from, saying that sarcastic stuff, but unfortunately no matter how much time gets devoted, breaking stuff is still a bad thing.
I have no sympathy for someone who shows up here saying there machine has not been updated in "a long time" and then complains that packages are not available when they want them. That's not breakage, that's just PEBKAC.

Problems trying to update with Pacman

So I installed Arch Linux for the first time and its awesome. I updated Pacman and after googling I learned that you have to uncomment some servers from the mirror list. I did it and the problem was solved. Yesterday was working but today is not working. Here is the output from pacman -Syy:

I can't update the core and extra packages but kdemod is updating. That's weird. Here is my /etc/pacman.conf

Following the wrong instructions maybe?
The Beginners guide, if that's what you followed to install had you going in the right direction.
The only mirrors that needed to be uncommented were the ones in your country.
There is also a package you could install that would rate the mirrors for you and keep the fastest six in a file to access automatically.
I don't recognize the address you have for core, but that doesn't mean it isn't a legit addy either.
I also don't see extra or the community repo in your pacman.conf.
No clue what you have done so no real clue how to fix it.

If you were able to update pacman, something was working.
Everything was working before the update and after the update.

[solved] Issue about update with pacman -Syu

Everytime I update my system I get these questions. I always answer no, because I'm afraid to screw up everything. The questions are
replace iwlwifi with core/kernel26?
replace rt2x00-cvs with core/kernel26?
replace slocate with core/mlocate?
What should I do, why pacman is asking me this, and what is slocate, mlocate, rt2x00-cvs iwlwifi, core/kernel26?
Thanks a lot, I'm a newbie! I've searched for that in forum and in google, and all what I got was japanese pages, and a thing that has nothing to do with that.

replace iwlwifi with core/kernel26? => that's because the Intel wireless driver iwlwifi was included in the linux kernel, so you don't need it anymore.
replace rt2x00-cvs with core/kernel26? => about the same thing I think.
replace slocate with core/mlocate? => the arch devs decided to change the version of locate (a command to search files) in core.

Update with pacman error

When I first run pacman -Syu on a clean install my system downloads everything, but when it goes to install it says that all of these certain files exist and no pakages upgraded .
any help would be appreciated.

Root partition suddenly full while updating packages with Pacman

Hello
I'm not sure if this is a problem with Pacman, but my root partition seems to have become completely full while updating my system using pacman -Syu. Before updating anything, there seems to have been an update to a new version of Pacman (3.3.1-1) that needed to be installed before updating packages.
In the middle of the updates, I got this error:

This happened to me recently. I could not restart my laptop properly due to lack of space on my root partition.
The error during boot was along the lines of:-
Starting D-BUS system messagebus - Failed
Failed to start message bus: Failed to close "var/run/dbus.pid": No space left on drive
Hardware Abstraction Layer - Failed
everything else during the boot was as normal till I started to type in my username - but couldn't because the keyboard was inactive.
I used a Wolvix live CD to investigate and found a QT4 file in the packman cache which was 6.9GB in size (compared to the normal 27mb size). Once that was deleted and the drive/partition error checked everything was back to normal. So before you reboot I would definitely recommend clearing any oversize file out of your packman cache, or just clearing the whole cache.

[SOLVED]Pacman fails to update

Hi,
It's been a while, so I hope this issue can be resolved here, and I'll be on my best behaviour. I tried an update (system-wide) with
pacman -Syu
it came back with :
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
initscripts: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
What do I do next?

Failed to Install The New Preview Build. Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.

I'm having issues upgrading my Windows 10 Technical Preview installation build 9879 to a newer build that's become available late January 23rd.
I am installing the new upgrade in a Hyper-V virtual machine and get the following error:
Failed to install the new preview build, please try again later. 0x80246007
What could be the problem?
Previously I've had messages that Windows cannot be upgraded on a computer with less than 2 Gbyte of RAM. That's a Hyper-V VM with dynamic memory and I was highly surprised to see this error; never had this before. Had to set 2048 Mbytes as a minimum memory
for this VM. Now that I have this 80246007 error code.
When looking up System log, the following error messages are listed multiple times:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.
The errors are returned for the Event ID 20 by WindowsUpdateClient
in task category Windows Update Agent..
I reviewed the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability
registry key as suggested in Windows
Insider stuck on build 9841 - "No new preview build was found", and here is what it shows:

Looks like Setup is having problems installing in a Hyper-V virtual machine.
Possibly, some ESD files got corrupted during downloading? Is it possible to remove them and re-download missing files? (I, however, noticed that Windows seems to re-download upgrade files after you restart 9879 and attempt to check for a new build.
Any clue why installing under VM causes 9926 to fail?

According to the error message, this problem seems like update package installation failed during system upgrade.
You can try to remove ESD file which locate at boot of C drive and upgrade the system again for test.
On the other hand, make sure the system 9879 installed all Windows pushed updates before system upgrade.

Hi folks,
I have a HP Elitebook Folio 9470p. It came with Windows 8, and I installed it on my corporate domain. I was trying to do some Windows updates so I could upgrade it to Windows 8.1, but it fails installing the updates, whether or not I try
to install them one at a time or all of them. It has about 18 updates it needs from security updates to a .net framework update. I run Symantec EP, and disabled it, checked for driver updates for things like display and networking and they are
all up to date.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. It gives this error in the event log for each file, Event ID 20.
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922: Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2862152).
This is the example for KB2862152, but it gives the same error for every one. I've tried to auto fix for Windows update issues and it fixed a couple of the issues, but not all of them, and provides no other help.
I also deleted folders and files from the SoftwareDistribution folder as well, to no avail. Any ideas what I can do to get whatever updates it needs, so I can fully patch it, and upgrade it to Win 8.1?

GOOD NEW ! At this time, my issue is solved. The only black side is "how ?" : I hope that we will get a response some day ; however, and for in information pnly - hoping this could help someone - I resume some actions which allowed this the happy end
1) about installing 8.1 : I wanted to be sure that gain/pain ratio was positive, and that upgrading from a (potentially) damaged system would'nt produce something looking like a new Win 8.1, but difficult to maintain and keeping some negative potentialities.
2) I was influenced by the fact that this
0x800F0922 error acted as "a serial killerror", whose root cause could be a unique update error at reboot time concerning several (>20) packages, so I decided to test some manual upgrades.
3) Manual update (i.e. manual download and maunching of .msu packages) of the 2 following packages
(whose update previously failed on a Windows Update) was successful : .NET Framework version 3.5 for x64 (KB2898866) and Camera Codec Pack Windows 8 for x64 (KB2899190)
4) So I decided to try Windows Update on a selection of packages, first : those concerning .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.5 (that is: KB2898866, 2901120, 2898865) --> Successful !
5) finally, I selected almost all other packages, with some exceptions wich I (think to) have no need for : KB2871690, 2904659, 2843630. To be complete, here is the list of pakages updated one time at all :
KB 2892074, 2893294, 2893984, 2909210, 2912390, 2916036, 2889784,2903938, 2911101, 2913152, 2917499
--> always succesful.
I am not a specialist, but I uess that this 0x800F0922 error hides another problem which is globally "H-RESULTED"
to all updates pending in one update operation with reboot. This could be assumed from this CBS.log exterped from my last wrong attempts, where root cause seems not to be
0x800f0922, but 0x80004003 :

Anyway, thanks to you who spent some of your time to describe issues and search/ suggest solutions ; I will upgrade my system to 8.1 anyway, some of this day, when I am sure that my configuration does not hides some other problem. I thing that potential
issue remains until maybe a new KB corrects it, wrong :-) ?
And I hope that you - Mr Kywildcat - can upgrade your system on "current levels" trying similar attempts.

Windows 8.1 update with KB2919355 keeps failing

hi,
I'm trying to get my Windows 8.1 updated with KB 2919355 but it keeps failing with error code E0000100.
I've tried tried to resolve using the "clearcompressionflag" tool, but that had no effect. The update will install but after reboot of machine, the update fails.
I'm running 64 bit and the pc is upgraded from Win 7 then Win 8 and finallly Win 8.1.

Aha. I think we are going to need a previous piece of the CBS.log. This KB2919355 is so huge that it seems to have wrapped the one that you are showing us. I.e. I suspect the most interesting piece of it will reflect what happened to produce
this event (or an earlier one of the same code 0xE0000100)

Unless that driver information is enough of a clue to help you devise a workaround? What is that device? You could use WMIC (or Powershell) to find out more.
E.g. try
wmic Path CIM_SystemDevice where (__RelPath like "%Ven_10%") get PartComponent
I'm sure we could find something more specific but that gives you an idea I hope.
You can do a Find in your WindowsUpdate.log for Installation Failure: to see that there is a definite pattern to the failure reports: 4 install errors and 1 download failure then 1 install error and 1 download failure.
So I suspect that the last ones, for the download failure, or even the quick install error is not going to be as interesting as the first of a set of 4. E.g. those later ones may just be the server throwing up its hands and saying: Go
away! (figuratively speaking, of course.)
Of course I may be completely off the mark here with such speculation, so you may prefer to leave it to Darrell to choose what he wants to look at. Thanks for both diagnostics. I think they will help.

Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 fails with error 23:3 on MacBook 2,1

I attempted to install "Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0" on two laptops tonight.
Macbook Pro 3,1:
Hadn't experienced the issue that the firmware would resolve. Installed the update anyway, successfully, and continued to have no problems since.
Macbook 2,1:
Hadn't experienced the issue that the firmware would resolve. Tried to install the update, but it failed with error "23:3". After the failure, the keyboard was non-responsive for about 30-60 seconds, during which time I assume it restored/re"booted" itself. Keyboard function was restored automatically after this time, though there was no indication that it would return, and I had to suffer a minor sweat. Still, I didn't learn I power cycled the system and tried again, but the update never installed successfully.
Lessons learned -

That said, Apple seems to have designed their hardware well enough to be able to recover from a failed firmware update. In this case, you just have to pray a little until the keyboard responds again.
Apple: be so kind, let us know what 23:3 means, and if needed, update the Firmware Updater.

I was just wondering how you were able to get the macbook to accept the update? I had to take mine to apple store and get entire keyboard and trackpad replaced in my macbook. They then told me to ignore the update cause they did not have any other keyboards to replace if it happened again.

I have a WSUS installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box, I have a new Windows Server 2012 box (joined to domain) that cannot get updates from the WSUS, whenever I try to search for new updates I receive the following error in event viewer:
Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800B0001
Note: I cannot see the Win2K12 server in the WSUS console under computers node.

I couldn't get it to run even after installing the mentioned KB fixes. So I investigated the error myself, and found a "hack" that seems to fix the issue. Wrote up a small piece on it here:

The fact that the /selfupdate folder was corrupted (read: missing files) pretty much says it all. There's no bug. Your installation of the update simply failed. (Or, the server wasn't healthy to begin with and you got what you got.)
Bottom line: The only known cause for a client-side 0x800B0001 error code is that the WSUS server has not been
properly and completely patched.

Created a package with packager for updates and install failed

Brand new iMac with CC2014 installed. Created a package of just updates. When running the update package, installation failed. Any ideas anyone?

System upgrade fails with pacman - phc-intel requires kernel26 2.6.31

I'm a relative newbie to archlinux, so I hope I'm not asking a too stupid question ...
I have installed arch on an IBM Thinkpad X40. Was now on extended holidays and haven't done a system upgrade for a while. Wanted to do this now and pacman -Syy works fine. However, when I then start the upgrade with pacman -Su, the following error message occurs:

translated into English it basically means that pacman wants to replace portmap with rpcbind. However, the following error message occurs whether or not I say yes. The error messages says that it cannot fulfill the dependencies as phc-intel requires kernel26<2.6.31. The strange thing is that my kernel at the moment is 2.6.29.
A first run of pacman -u worked fine but only upgraded pacman itself. I had a pacman.conf.pacnew in /etc which I renamed to pacman.conf and kept the old one as a backup. However, this also didn't change anything.

The update will be trying to install a new kernel, which is why you're getting the error. For packages in the repos, a new one would be built that's compatible with the new kernel. Since it looks like phc-intel is from the AUR you'll need to build a new version yourself.
