Upgrade to linux3.1.4 causes no boot(Solved?)

While troubleshooting the failures of my raid0 bootable Compact Flash devices, I proceeded to perform the following setup.
I first upgraded my system in the raid0 kernel 2.6.39.3-1 with a download via pacman -Syu.  Total packages downloaded was 317.  Linux kernel 3.1.4 was not accepted for download.  All packages were successfully downloaded and installed( rm/etc/profile.d/xxxx.sh was removed).  The device was recognized in /etc/proc/mdstat as /dev/md0.
Therefore all items concerned with the latest packages were installed.  This without the new kernel 3.1.4.  I upgraded mirrorlist which was included in the packages.  I then rebooted into my raid0 system successfully.  I then upgraded to linux 3.1.4 kernel with pacman.
I then rebooted but failed to boot with the error : unable to find /dev/md0...no major-minor number on device by uuidxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Thus, it seems obvious there is a problem in the linux-3.1.4-1-x86_64.pkg .tar.xz which affects the blkid, using UUID, since previous failures encountered with this kernel indicate that the uuid changed in linux kernels to accept the uuid of the booting device in this case, the boot device is the first device (0) of the two devices(0,1).  There are also indications that the /dev/md0 becomes dev md127.
Any guidance to the solution of this discrepancy would be welcomed.

The problem occurs with many users.
My postings in the following arch post may give you a solution.  My views are expressed therein and may not be valid(however, I have had messed up downloads with bad mirrors, despite what has been reported in that post)
Anyhow, there have been successful uses of my approach, even though it may seem off base.
I did the complete list of steps to correct my system.  It is possible the mirror download did not include initramfs.  My approach was to " cover the bases" in proper pacman order not having left out pertinent possibilities and has helped others to correct their problem.
I suggest you read the whole post , decide what might be useable including the recommend from falconindy.  He can well be right but why does it hit more than one user?
Good luck and let us know how it goes...............
EDIT:  The same problem occurred when I upgraded to the latest Kernel.  I performed the same procedure I recommended and now have the latest kernel in 3 pairs of CF raid0 cards.  They run faster than normal by 50% in hdparm -t.  I attribute this to the raid0 mode striping.
It is not apparent to me what order of install or what speed of performance is applicable to pacman when downloading the core items in archlinux.  Perhaps a delay(ugh) is needed for initramfs to properly install.
All of pacman is a black art but most definitely needs to be run according to hoyle but system changes such as initramfs need to be compatible with pacman if that is the problem with upgrades(as suggested by falconindy) .
I expect the next kernel upgrade to cause the same failure based on past experience with linux kernels.

A Safari upgrade will not affect PS. An OS X upgrade, however, could. See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • Catch 22 after Win7 upgrade from Vista (no way to install Boot Camp)

I've seen other posts about this but no answers, so I'll keep this
I had Vista Home Premium running in a Boot Camp partition on my black MB 2.0GHz with Snow Leopard, although I only used Fusion and not Boot Camp for Windows. (The Boot Camp partition dated back to the program's beta, which I ran on Tiger. I skipped Leopard.) I replaced the hard drive with a larger model -- thank you CCC and WinClone --, upgraded to Win7 Home Premium and thought I'd try getting Boot Camp running.
The Snow Leopard install DVD has a Boot Camp 3.0 installer that refuses to run on Win 7. (The error message that I get is, "Boot Camp requires that your computer is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista.") And the Boot Camp 3.1 Updater is, well, an updater that wants to see Boot Camp 3.0. Doesn't seem to be any way forward!
I've seen it recommended to try a Boot Camp 2.1 installer (seems like a long shot, but has anyone tried it?) or to run the Boot Camp 3.0 installer in Vista compatibility mode (reported not to work).
It doesn't feel worth it to re-image the MacBook's Boot Camp partition to Vista using my WinClone backup, then install Boot Camp 3.0, then do the Win 7 upgrade again, and then run the Boot Camp 3.1 updater. Not when Fusion is so good. It took me several iterations of the restore-and-upgrade business with Boot Camp Assistant and WinClone to get to this point and I'm not eager to repeat it. It's not hard, just tedious. It does seem likely that that upgrade path would work, however. Practic makes perfect.
    Thoughts?

And just one more thing... I'm remembering now that when I started up the Win7 install, I got a warning that Boot Camp wouldn't work after the upgrade. I don't know which version that would have been. I went ahead with the upgrade anyway. Knowing now how that worked out, I can see that I probably zigged where I should have zagged. But I remember thinking at the time that my options were to cancel the upgrade, uninstall Boot Camp and then try the upgrade again. It didn't occur to me to upgrade to the 3.1 version of Boot Camp because I thought that was the Win7 compatible version, and I was still on Vista at that point.
Maybe all this verbiage will help someone else avoid this situation!

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?
    -Jeff

  • System boot failure after upgrade from linux3.13.8-1 to linux3.14.6-1

I have tried to update the kernel again from 3.13 to 3.14 again, but no luck.
My arch system boot failure with black screen, tried [ctrl]+[alt]+[F1-6] and nothing happen, no any recure shell prompt out.
Then I boot with kernel debug parameters
    systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg log_buf_len=1M
althrough the screen was black, when I reboot and chroot into my system,
I entered the following to find any error messages, please see the link below:

I searched on internet, I think this is caused by my graphic card(ATI 5750), but I have no idea to solve it
I don't know my system boot failure due to these error or another things.
    my PC specs:
    motherbroad - gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (bios ver - F11)
    cpu -  i5-750
    display - ati 5750
    os - arch 64bit
Currently, I have downgraded back to 3.13.
I hope someone can give me some idea,
    Thanks

As there are errors associated with ntpd, I would temporarily disable the ntpd service and also ipv6.
If they are not the only problem, at least your logs would be easier to examine for other problems.

  • FileVault 2 seems to be causing kernel boot panics

    Hello,
I'm on a 10.8.2 Mountain Lion OS X (13-inch, Mid 2010), no new updates are available. I turned on FileVault 2 a few months ago and since then I've had a lot of kernel panics while booting. Sometimes it just booted ok and sometimes it panicked. Sometimes even twice in a row. Sometimes it created a crash report, sometimes it did not.
This is actually a clean-ish install, it's not an upgrade from Lion. I don't use Parallels Desktop or VMware as other threads sometimes mention. I don't use any NTFS driver. Although I do have Flash Player, GPGPreferences, Growl and Java plugins installed (I don't know if they have anything to do with those drivers).
Before I turned the Vault on, no boot panics.
After I turned it on, sometimes panic, sometimes not, couldn't find any system in it. About 50 % chance of a crash.
After I turned it back off, no panics so far.
So I turned it off today and tried restarting about twenty times (shut downs, restarts) and no kernel panic so far. I also installed Memtest and had it run in single user mode once and everything was ok.
I have three very similar general protection fault reports, I'm going to post the latest one here but if anyone wants to take a look at the other ones, please let me know.
Problem is I don't know if this is my hardware error or FileVault error.
    Thank you,
    Ollie

There are other reports of kernel panics like this one with FileVault. The cause seems to be an OS bug that only affects certain models and/or aftermarket SSD's. Make sure your system is fully updated. If it is, the only workaround I know of is to deactivate FileVault.

  • Toshiba Satellite P870 upgraded to Win 8.1 does not boot

I have a Toshiba Satellite P870 with Win 8 preinstalled. Soon after upgrade to Win 8.1 and basically successful removal of “watermark error” (secure boot activated) the machine stopped booting completely: after pressing the power button ventilator sound
is heard with periodically changing loudness as well as clicking sound from the speakers. The screen stays black. Attempts to start the PC through pressing F2 or zero buttons did not produce any result. Neither did I succeed with recovery discs I created before:
the system simply does not boot from the disk. It looks like I tried all options offered by Microsoft and Toshiba. I would be happy to roll back to factory settings.
Could someone give me hint what to do next?

    Hi,
For the issue, let us know how to remove the “watermark error".
Meanwhile, I would like to confirm if you could access the BIOS.
I suggest you update the BIOS version to test it.
If you want to repair the startup issue, you should use windows 8.1 recovery discs or installation discs.
Meanwhile, if you cannot access the BIOS, it may be caused by hardware, I suggest you contact the Toshiba manufacturer for further help.

  • Kernel upgrade yesterday led to panic on boot [SOLVED]

    Hello all,
I think I screwed my machine up badly.  I've searched the forums and wiki for a couple hours and don't see a fix, so I thought I'd ask before blowing away my system and reinstalling from scratch.
Here is what happened.  I tried a pacman -Syu for the first time in a month or so.  I got lots of file conflict errors.  Some searching on the forums suggested that was because I had an old version of xorg, so I removed my xorg and installed 7.0.  After that my XFCE wouldn't work due to an error about the nv module being missing.  So I tried to reinstall the nvidia-legacy package.  That also failed with errors saying my kernel was compied with a different version of gcc than the nvidia package was.  So I tried to upgrade the kernel with pacman -Sy kernel26.  Normally I have that on my ignorepkg list so I was at 2.6.11 or something around there a few revs back.
Now I can't boot.  I get a panic saying it can't find discs/disc0/part3.  I can boot off my (old 0.6) arch install CD, then do mount /dev/discs/disc0/part3 /mnt and chroot /mnt and it works so at least I can work on it in its crippled state a bit.
The one clue I did find was to add initrd to my lilo.conf, but I did that and try to run /sbin/lilo and I get an error from that as well.
Is this because I needed to switch to udev before upgrading the kernel to 2.6.15?  That was my guess but I haven't found any confirmation info on that.  If that isn't it, do you know what could be causing my problem?  And whatever the cause, is there a way to get my system back or should I give up and reinstall.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
    Ralph

Ok, I got it fixed.  I made the changes in the devfs to udev wiki page, but it was still broken.  I was booting off the install cd, mounting my / to /mnt, then doing chroot /mnt.  I fixed /boot/grub/menu.lst as part of the changes to go to udev, but it still wouldn't boot right.  I finally figured out that my /boot partition is separate, so I had to mount /boot up and change menu.lst there.  After I did that it booted ok.

  • How do I uninstall Yosemite please ? Since I upgraded my 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up

My 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up following my upgrade to Yosemite. How do I uninstall or downgrade back to the previous version of OS please ?

You can't downgrade or uninstall unless you first erase the drive. Try the following:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Upgraded to 10.8.1 - Won't Boot - Black Screen

I upgraded to 10.8.1 and restarted. The laptop screen never flickers, activates, or appears to turn on at all.
All peripherals have been disconnected. Powering off and on multiple times has no effect. Removing (and replacing) the battery has no effect. Attempting to hold Option or Shift or Command-Option-P-R have no effect.

Ok, this is weird. I came back from church after leaving the laptop completely off and disconnected the entire time. It just booted up as if nothing happened.
Any ideas as to why? I did note to myself when I shut it off before departure that it was running hot, but I didn't think the temperature was too far out of normal.

  • Upgrading to OS X Lion - Effects on Boot Camp partition

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running the latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and I also have a Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 in it.
Will upgrading to OS X Lion using the Mac App Store affect my Boot Camp partition? Any recommendations on how I should do this?
    Thank you.

External hard drives are the cheapest insurance you can
get for a computer.  Even if you don't update, there is always
a chance the hard drive or even the computer could die.
Any way, I installed Lion on two machines with Bootcamp
partitions and had no issues.  Both were Windows7 64 bit.
I think it just grabs the 650 meg it uses from the OSX
    partition.

  • Upgrade to 10.4.7 causes severe display flicker

I am running a 15-inch MacBook Pro connected to a 23" cinema HD display.
Since the upgrade to 10.4.7, the laptop screen starts to severely flicker after approximately 3-5 minute, rendering it unusable. Moving a window around (even on the 23") will cause large amounts of flickering; the windows on the laptop screen are duplicated for a split second, and then stabilize until the next display refresh takes place.
The problem disappears after sleeping and waking up the machine, only to resurface after another 3-5 minutes.
Re-installing the 10.4.6 backup fixed the issue. The problem came back after re-upgrading to 10.4.7, and went away again after downgrading to 10.4.6 again.
Is this a 10.4.7 issue, or should I have my machine repaired?
    MacBook Pro 15-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   15" MBP 2.0 GHz w/ 2GB, X1600 with 256 MB

Same problem at my end since i got the MacBook Pro 15/2.16Ghz. On connecting an external display the main screen flickers after 3-5 mins, goes purple (similar to the pics someone posted earlier) and then goes black. Sometimes it comes back for a few mins but eventually both displays freeze - the internal one goes black and teh external one retains whatever picture was on it but no mouse/kbd control is active. I opened a case with Apple 3 days ago and have been troubleshooting it with them. My next step is to revert to 10.4.6 and see if the problem ges away. An interesting twist to this is that my boss has an identical (arrived the same day) Macbook Pro running with an identical external display attached and does NOT have this problem. The difference between our instals is that i run some additional apps such as Ms Office & AdiumX.

  • Apple Wired Keyboard Causing Bootcamp Boot Freeze

    Hello everyone,
I discovered a very serious issue with my late 2009 21.5" iMac. Whenever I would attempt to boot to my Bootcamp partition, the system would freeze on the selection screen. After months of trying various things, including a complete reformat of the drive, I have found that the issue is being caused by the fact that my Apple wired keyboard is plugged into a USB port. I have found a workaround, which is to set the Bootcamp partition as primary and unplug the keyboard before the system boots, but this is a very large pain in the neck. Can anyone suggest a fix?
Thank you in advance for any help!

Yes. It started out as an intermittent issue. A few reboots generally got Bootcamp to start. But it became worse over time. I deleted and reinstalled Bootcamp/Windows several times before this. Last week the issue came up again. I tried deleting the Bootcamp partition/reinstalling Windows again, but this time it would hang during the installation process. I went so far as to reformat my whole drive, but that did not resolve the issue either. All this took place over the course of several months, off and on. I dont use Bootcamp very often.
Thank you for the suggestion! I'll check it out.
