Upgrading from OSX 10.1.5... no idea what i'm doing... please help?

First of all, hello! This is my first post on these boards.
So here's the deal: I'm lazy. Terribly lazy. And I haven't updated my OS since buying this computer four years ago.
So now I'm in a pickle... I'd LIKE to upgrade, but I haven't a clue how to go about doing so, and I'm totally overwhelmed by everything I'm reading on the apple site and in these forums.
Seriously, if any of you have a ton of patience and can speak to me like you would to an infant, I would so appreciate it!
Best,
Sweetpea
PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

Start with http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/,
http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/, and
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/cheatsheet/
Thank you! That's definitely helpful to start with, but I'm still nervous... I realize that this is a hefty upgrade that I'm attempting. What is going to be affected? I'm not terribly concerned about documents, but will I have to re-install programs and such?
I appreciate your help, thank you.

  • Keychain Issue...no idea what I'm doing. Help!

    Hey All..
I am having a little trouble with my passwords. I have 2 mail accounts on my MBP. One is my .Mac mail and the other is my POP3 mail. For the past year or so everything has been fine (and the previous 2 years on my PB) But, yesterday I was messing around using "Main Menu" application cleaning up my computer.
I have never used it before so I was just trying to make some space by removing things. Anyway, did the following things:
    Clean User Cache
    Clean System Cache
    Empty Browser Cahe
    Clean Font Cache
    Remove Corrupt Preferences
    Clean All Logs
    Remove Temporary Files
I did all of these and just wondered if any of this would have had an affect on my Mail. I also have MSN Messenger on my laptop and iChat and when I open them I am also now prompted for my password.
I went in to the mail preferences and sure enough on both accounts the password field is blank. So I filled them in the saved them. But on reopening the preferences the passwords are gone again. Please help as it's very frustrating. I started all this after a one-2-one training session in the Apple Store yesterday. Would love some help if anyone can spare the time. I'm not sure what I did but would love to undo it. Is there anyway I can go back?
Another user said that it would be a keychain problem and that I should use first aid. I tried "Verify" forst and it did so...no problem. Then repair but it still doesnt remember my passwords. Anyone got any idea if there is a tutorial online I can check out or indeed how to set my keychain to remember my passwords. I am a fairly useless Mac user even thugh I love them.
    Many thanks..

  • I have no idea what is going on, please help!

    hey,
i've only had my iPod 3rd generation nano for a little bit, but there's already problems!
first of all, the touch screen thing, I can use it in the sense that I can change the volume... so I guess the 'touch' part of it is working. But whenever I try to click it, as in to move to a different song, it won't work.
    Can anyone help me?

well, each corner of the ring (top, bottom, left, right) has a button on it. If you want to use these buttons, you must actually press down on the wheel, not just touch it. there should be a faint click when you push down and that corner of the wheel will actually depress slightly into the surface of the iPod.
the top corner is "MENU" (go back to the last list of options you were at), the bottom is "> ❙❙" (play/pause whatever is currently playing), the left is "⎮<<" (skip to the song that was just played), the right is ">>⎮" (skip to the song that will play next), and the button in the middle of the ring is called the center button (when you press this, whatever is selected will be activated. i.e. if Shuffle Songs was selected, a push of the center button will start shuffling.)
the click wheel also serves as a way to scroll through lists. if you move your finger gently and smoothly along the ring (you don't have to push hard at all) in a circular formation to scrool. moving around the circle clockwise (to the right) scrools down the list to the next menu item, and pushing the center button chooses that item.

  • Upgrading from OSX 10.4.9 to OSX 10.6.8 on old Mac Book Pro (2nd computer)

    Greetings
I was wondering what the steps and cautions are to upgrade from OSX 10.4.11 on an old Mac Book Pro (2nd computer for shared use in household for emails, etc.) 2.33 Inel Core 2 Duo to OSX 10.6.8 or highest that I can?

You will need to get a 10.6 Snow Leopard retail disk which I don't think are still available from Apple.
Google "buy mac 10.6 snow leopard" to get an idea of current pricing. You'll need updates to10.6.8  in order to upgrade to 10.7 (the early core duo MBPros can not do this) or possibly 10.8 but check the exclusion list to be sure.
MacTracker can give you all the details.  http://mactracker.ca/

  • How can I upgrade from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 on my 2012 mac mini? (2.3 GHz, 4 GB, 500 GB SATA disk) I don't want OSX Yosemite.

How can I upgrade from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 on my 2012 mac mini? (2.3 GHz, 4 GB, 500 GB SATA disk) I don't want OSX Yosemite.

If your Mini shipped with OS X 10.7 Lion, then it was considered a 2011 build model, or before.
The Mini 2012 model, is considered a Late 2012, & the last one where RAM could be upgraded.
And it shipped with Mountain Lion 10.8, which is a fairly OK system if one had older software.
(However mine shipped in Dec 2014, with Mavericks 10.9.0, and was built in January 2014.)
There were a few different build versions of Late 2012 Mac Mini, the i5 or i7 processor,
in dual-core or quad-core, and some CTO or built-to-order versions with other specs.
You can buy Mountain Lion from online Apple Store, & use a download code emailed to you to
get the Mt. Lion 10.8 from Apple Servers; this would be about it, since Mavericks isn't available.
So hopefully that is an option you can exercise; in addition the computer may prefer more RAM.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I upgrade from OSX 10.7.5 to OSX 10.8.5

I need to upgrade from OSX 10.7.5 to OSX 10.8.5 in order to use Avid Pro Tools 10 and 11 on the same iMac.
My iMac is 2.5GHz Core i5. Pro Tools 10 will not work on OSX 10.9 and Pro Tools 11 needs 10.8.5 or 10.9.4. Not certified for Yosemite.

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

MY QUE IS, WILL IT BE FIXED IF I UPGRADE FROM OSX 10.8.5 TO MAVERICKS? What other options do I have? What can be an approximate cost for fixing this problem?

Of course not. It's a hardware problem, so it can't be fixed by upgrading software. The only option you have got is to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller.
That error indicates a problem with the hard drive. What you have to do is to make a backup of your files and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller, so they can confirm that the problem is the hard drive and not the SATA connector, which could be worse.
If it's a hard drive issue, it's not expensive (about $100-200, depending on the hard drive). If it's a SATA connector issue, the whole logic board may have to be replaced.
Note that you can replace the hard drive yourself if you want, but the cost between doing it yourself and taking the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller is similar

When upgrading from osx 10.7.4 to osx mountain lion I get the following Alert!  This update requires OS X version 10.8.

Sounds like you downloaded the 10.8.1 update instead of the Mountain Lion installer from the Mac App Store.
You have to purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store to get to 10.8

  • Can I upgrade from osx tiger v10.4.11 to osx Snow Leopard v10.6 for 29$ ??

I was wondering if I could upgrade from osx tiger v10.4.11 to osx Snow Leopard v10.6 for 29$ or at a lower cost than full price. I do not need to upgrade that much because 10.4.11 is so great and I hate to leave it. Paying the full price of an operating system does not make sense to me. Can I do it cheaply because I am upgrading?

    No.
The $29 upgrade is from leopard to Snow Leopard.

What is the best way to backup my computer before upgrading from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6? I just purchased a WD portable external hard drive.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/index.html or SuperDuper.  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  Both make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive.

  • Upgrading from OSX 10.2.4

    Hullo.
I must point out that I am a total novice with regard to computers. I've got an eMac & I want to upgrade from OSX 10.2.4 to 10.2.8 but I have a message that it's failed to mount due to error 95 ( no mountable file system ) & would appreciate any thoughts as to overcome this.
    Many thanks,
    cptsnapper

You have a bad download. If you are downloading via a dialup this is likely to happen because of the size of the file. If you have a broadband connection, then re-download the file. Also, be sure you download the 10.2.8 Combo Updater: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdatecombo10_28.html.
