USB 2.0 ports on MS-6398E board

I'm new to the MSI forums so bear with me if my style of posting is not yet quite right.
I've got an MS-6398E motherboard and in Win2K the Device Manager lists one USB 2.0 root hub and 3 USB root hubs (no numeric designation).
When I check the properties sheet for each root hub the USB 2.0 root hub shows 6 ports available and with a single device on each of 2 of the other 3 hubs it shows 1, 1 and 2 ports available.
Patently something is not right because it seems that I have 12 ports in total on a motherboard that only has 6 to begin with.
Ideally I would like the 2 devices I currently have plus any future devices to run off the USB 2.0 ports because they're faster.
So I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

I just installed my new GNB Max a few hours ago and it uses the same ICH4 southbridge as your board so therfor all the peripherals are the same.
I also see 6 ports on the USB2.0 hub and 2 on each of the other ones.
Looks normal to me since they all seem to work.

The fix is a new logic board. It might be tempting to turn off the computer and start poking around inside to fix it yourself but you risk separating the port from the logic board and doing even more damage.

  • Mac Pro USB and FW800 ports not working

I've been reading tons of forum entries in the Apple Support Community and in other forums.  Nothing seems to answer quite what's going on with my Mac Pro Tower.
Here are the details and steps taken up to now:
    - I'm running a Mac Pro Tower (MacPro 3,1, 2x 2,8GHz Quad Core, Early 2008 model), currently running OS 10.6.8
    - I moved before the holidays in December and left my computer unplugged for over  month while away. Didn't have any issues before the move.
    - up until the last couple of weeks, I had actually been running on Leopard (yes, I'm a luddite!, please, no teasing )
    - I was trying to update my ipod touch's iOS and kept getting errors preventing it from completing the process. At first I thought it was an ipod app causing the issue after having read a few threads on that topic...
    - Also, on startup, the Mac started searching for a Bluetooth keyboard, of which I don't have, and would not detect my usb keyboard.  I would disconnect and reconnect the keyboard and the majority of the time, the Mac would then recognize my USB keyboard.
    - I decided to upgrade to Snow Leopard, which didn't help with the iPod update. I did not do a clean install.
    - Then I noticed that my USB stick wasn't working and tried it in all the usb ports (except the ones on the keyboard)
    - Also, I had removed and then reinstalled printer and scanner drivers for my All-in-one printer. After this I kept getting constant communication errors between the mac and the printer via the usb port, although I was able to print a test page.
    - I've used Hardware Test once which didn't detect any issue.
    - I reset the SMC
    - I reset the PRAM, and for a few seconds I was able to read from my USB stick, then never again, even after another PRAM reset.
    - I've cleaned the whole inside of the computer and checked for loose cables.  Cables are in so tight it's so hard to loosen them!
    - I now tested all the ports:
∞ the 2 front and 3 back USB ports are unresponsive to my usb key and to my VoyagerQ dock
∞ the front and back FW800 ports are unresponsive to my VoyagerQ dock
∞ However, the keyboard works in any fo the back ports and my USB stick is recorgnized by the USB port of the keyboard.
∞ I also plugged in my Logitech webcam into the keyboard and it works there but not in any other port.
∞ When I plug in USB powered speakers into any of the ports, they work fine
∞ And the FW400 ports are also working fine with my VoyagerQ dock
    - a few times, including once today, my mac restarted by itself.  The times before today, I thought it was because I was sort of moving back the computer in place, but today I was nowhere near the computer.
So what does this all mean? Should I do a clean install of the Mac OS? Or is it a problem with my Logic Board?
Any insight please would be helpful.  I had Apple Care and missed the reminder to renew it so I really hoping not to spend more money than necessary.

    Thanks Grant,
The battery is a start and something inexpensive to replace.
I did do a PRAM reset (command + option + P + R) and was able to hear the chime 4 times. I tried resetting it a number of times over the past week, as well as yesterday with no success in reviving the USB ports.  But isn't it weird that my USB powered speakers work by plugging them in any USB port (with the mini jack pugged in the back or front earphone plug)?
I did not use the USB ports on the keyboard until yesterday, so that is not the cause of the other USB and FW800 ports failing. But I'll follow your suggestion and not use them except for the mouse.
Another weird thing that happened yesterday, I have 16GB of RAM and I spent all day trying to troubleshoot a RAM issue that is magically fixed after leaving the computer on overnight to do an extended Hardware Test. The issue was:
    - Only 8 RAMS were being recognized
    - a red LED light appeared on the top riser
    - first I thought I had isolated the faulty RAM bar, and then a second one
    - Then going pair by pair again, I no longer saw the LED light
    - Put back all 8 bars, only 8 GB of RAM recognized
    - Left computer overnight running Hardware test (said it took almost 3 hours, with no errors)
    - Now all 16 GB are recognized!
    Thanks again for the tips

  • USB to Serial port delay

I have some LabVIEW code that communicates with a TI MSP430 development board via a USB serial port simulator. The hardware that does the serial to USB conversion is part of the development board. how the application works is the LabVIEW code sends a request using the VISA write VI, and the board responds.  The requests and responses are both about 5-6 bytes each, and are being sent at 115200 baud 8-N-1.
Everything works, but there is a roughly 600ms delay between sending the request and receiving the first byte of the response. After the first byte is received, the other bytes are received within 1 ms.  I assumed the firmware in the develoment board was slow, but I put a scope on the RX and TX lines coming out of the microcontroller, and the firmware responds in less than 1 ms, so the microcontroller isn't the issue. So somewhere between the UART to USB hardware, and LabVIEW, there is a 600ms delay.  I have a feeling that it is the TI development board, or drivers that are holding things up. The USB to serial stuff seems to be kind of flaky generally on these boards.  However, I wanted to come on here, and see if anyone had any ideas about how I might figure this out, or what might be wrong.  I'm going to post on the TI forums also, and see if I get a resonse there.
Has anyone seen an issue like this before using USB to serial converters?
Is there something else I could try to narrow down where the issue is, or rule out some part of the system (like making sure that it isn't an issue with the VISA drivers)?

The FTDI drivers offer some latentcy optimizations.  Others do not.
Most TI MSP430 boards have their own build in USB interface based on the TUSB3410 from TI and the according driver for it is the TUSBWINVCP package. Nothing to do with FTDI.

  • 870A-G54 doesn't boot devices from USB 3.0 port

I have the latest BIOS, and USB devices boot just fine when plugged into a USB 2.0 port. My current USB stick of choice is formatted FAT32. But when it's plugged into a USB 3.0 port, it's not even listed in the boot menu, nor can the device be used to flash the BIOS. It's simply not there. I can use USB 3.0 ports like normal once an operating system has loaded.
I have had this issue since I purchased the motherboard about a year ago. I don't recall seeing anything in the documentation that mentions this limitation. I suspect that the board's USB controller may be faulty. However, performance and connectivity is otherwise unaffected. It's a strange quirk, and it's now bugging me sufficiently to ask for help. Google has been of no use, and I searched the forum and couldn't find any info here either. So, does anyone know what might be going on here?
    Rest of the relevant specs:
    1090T stock
    12GB of RAM (don't ask)
    Sapphire 6850 stock
    Spinpoint F3 1TB
    WD RE2-GP 750GB
    AOpen DVD burner
    Win7 Pro x64

  • Z87-G45 and SOME USB 3.0 ports not appearing in tray/prompting to eject

The 2 lowest USB 3.0 ports on the back panel (Nearest the sound connectors) of my G45 have a weird issue under Win 7 Ultimate. When I plug in a 2.0 drive into those ports, everything is normal i.e. the eject icon and eject warning appear in the tray as usual. However, when I plug in 3.0 drives, no icon or warning appear, but they're fully accessible through explorer etc. USBView reports they're running at full speed, so they're being identified correctly. These 3.0 drives have all the proper messages/icons in all the other ports, including the 2.0 ports where it even warns me that it can perform faster in a 3.0 port. I've tried all the older/latest drivers from Intel and MSI. And ideas or suggestions? Just trying to figure out if my board has a problem or not. Thanks!

Do you just mean they aren't treated as removable drives?
There was an issue that was resolved via bios update similar to this.
Might want to try upgrading to the latest.

  • Side USB 3.0 ports in HP Envy 23-d250xt stopped?

I have the HP Envy all in one desktop, Model 23-d250xt.
There are two side USB ports and four rear USB ports.  The two side ports no longer recognize peripherals (external HD or flash memory).  The four rear ports are still active.
Any suggestions on how to re-enable the side USB ports?
    Thanks in advance.
    David
update:  the side USB ports were powered but for some reason, were not recognizing devices that were plugged into them.  I disabled the device then enabled the device and all is working fine now.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Here is what I did.
    I took the battery out.
I took the bottom big panel off.
I took the small panel off for the wireless card to see if I could see the two screws that connect the usb 3.0 ports and luckily I did.
I check the tightness and the screws were in really tight.
I decided to unscrew the two screws and lifted the backend of the usb 3.0 board up a little bit. I then sprayed some CRC QD Electronic Cleaner on the contact areas.
I put the two screws back in and tightened them up as much as possible without stripping or breaking the board.
I put the panels back on and put the battery back in.
Started it up and to my surprise, the USB 3.0 ports worked perfectly.
Before the USB 3.0 port problem the motherboard was changed so maybe the contacts needed to be cleaned. That is my guess.
Pepe999, thank you for the responses. I appreciate it.

  • Why my usb 2.0 port doesn't detect the devices?

    Hello everyone.
I have some troubles with my usb 2.0 port.
It connects the devices (for example those which are powered by the computer turn on their lights when I plug in them in the port), but they don't appear in finder's devices list.
I've already tried to resetting PRAM, VRAM and SMC.
Meanwhile the other port is fully functional, it never presented problems.
Besides the port doesn't work is listed in System Profiler with all info (and no errors, I guess) .
I have no idea what could be...
Anyone can help me? Thanks a lot!

for me i have a issue that the port doesnt even charge anything its completely dead i have had my logic board replaced once, mand need to go back tomorrow, domyou have apple care? if so they will proabbly change yournlogic board

  • USB 3.0 port seems to be VERY loose / flimsy (everything keeps disconnecting / reconnecting)

Just like the title says: my USB 3.0 port seems to be very touchy...even the slightest nudge of whatever's plugged in will cause it to play the device-disconnected chime (but then nearly immediately play the device-reconnected chime).
    Is this a known issue?
And what do I do to fix?  I assume it's a HARDWARE rather than a software problem, because it's a physical nudge that seems to prompt the disconnect/reconnect...so is this something that i'll need to open my computer to fix? It's not under warranty anymore...

    Hi there @BarryKatz1
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you have an intermittent USB connection and that the connector seems loose. I am happy to help, and as you surmise, this is more of a hardware issue.
I certainly feel your pain, I have a notebook that my young son pulled down (more than once) and each time I lost a USB port due to damage, and of the three I had on that notebook, only one still functions.
The port is a part of the notebook's mainboard, so the main remedy is a board replacement.  You will find the part and part numbers in the service guide, on page 25 of 81.
HP Spectre 13 Pro Ultrabook and HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook Maintenance and Service Guide
About the only other thing you can try is a new USB cable for the device, just in case the problem is more cable related.
    I hope this helps.

  • 870A-G54 - Lost use of of ALL usb 2.0 ports after months no issues

First off I have been using this board for about 6 months with no issues.  None what-so-ever.  That was until my hard drive failed (it was old anyways.)
I replaced the failed drive and reinstalled Windows 7 x64.  Except I was only able to plug my keyboard/mouse into the USB3.0 ports. None of the usb 2.0 ports on the board worked.
I disconnected the USB headers (for my case,) swapped the memory, flashed the bios, and reconnected the all the cables (power, sata, etc..)
On top of that, it takes about 3 full minutes for the system just to post.  Usually it took maybe 3 seconds.
    I'm stumped.  Any thoughts??

Some times Windows gets confused during installation, if there are strange things attached. USB before Windows for example is n o t  a good idea.
Use absolute minimum parts for the installation of Windows, no extra USB things, PCI-cards, hard disks, sticks of memory etc. As little as possible!
You can add all things after the installation is completed.
    A new Windows installation, then.
This isn't a Windows issue.  I can disconnect everything (even the hard drive) and boot with just a monitor and keyboard, and the keyboard will not work to even access the BIOS (DEL key) unless it is in one of the USB3.0 ports.

  • How do I disable only the USB 2.0 ports - K7T266 Pro2-RU

None of the USB ports on this MB will work with my Biostar 6-in-1 card reader - however, I have a VIA USB 2.0 PCI card that works fine with it. I want to disable the 2.0 ports only, and install the PCI card. The manual is not very helpful - if I only enable USB 2, which seems to be the USB 1.1 header, that DOES disable the USB 2.0 ports, but it also disables the 2 USB 1.1 ports on the MB!

Yes, and they are labled USB1, USB2 and USB3 - now I assume that these correspond to the JUSB1, JUSB2 and JUSB3 headers on the MB, with JUSB2 being the 1.1 ports on the D-LED bracket, and JUSB1 and JUSB3 being the 2.0 headers. I can only ENABLE certain USB ports in the BIOS - i.e. if I only enable JUSB2, this effectively disables the 2.0 ports - aha - it also disables the 2 1.1 ports on the back of the MB itself!!
    Any other answers?

  • HP 2005pr USB 2.0 Port Replicator - Video not with my Surface Pro 3

    Hi everyone,
I've spent tons of hours already trying to get the HP 2005pr USB 2.0 Port Replicator working with my Surface Pro 3 and no luck. I mean, the USB replication / hub works, meaning that if I plug in a USB mouse / keyboard, they work. It recognizes the device in Device Manager and the ViewSpan application is running. But if I plug in a display in the VGA, nothing happens, no monitor gets detected, and even if I "force-detect" one it still doesn't display anything.
I've tried with 3 driver versions so far:
0.2.5 - not working at all. Reboots my Surface while installing. (this one is on the device itself).
3.X - which is the first with support for Windows 8 I think. I can install it and everything works as described above - meaning no VGA.
5.3.X - same story as above.
I've tried uninstalling, restarting and uninstalling several times with both versions. No luck. And I've literally been on every forum where people have problems with the replicator and nothing helped.
Anyone had any luck getting such a setup to work?
Or any ideas on how to get it to work?
    Thanks.

    Hi @blinkk2
I see that you are having problem connecting an external monitor to your Microsoft Surface Pro 3 through the HP USB Port Replicator. As the USB ports are working with the mouse and keyboard we know what the Port Replicator itself is working this is going to be something with the drivers on the Surface. I would recommend contacting Microsoft Support to see if they can recommend a graphics driver for you.

  • USB 2.0 stopped being recognized by USB 3.0 port

    Hey all,
Two days ago, I was syncing my iPod Classic (USB 2.0) with iTunes and I also had my USB 2.0 Time Machine drive plugged in (I do not think it was backing up at the time), both of these devices were plugged into the USB 3.0 ports on my 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2012). All of a sudden, my MacBook informs me that both devices were disconnected. For the next 30 minutes, these devices connected and disconnected sporadically. I tried restarting my MacBook multiple times, I reset the PRAM multiple times, I reset the SMC multiple times, I booted into Windows 7 (I use Boot Camp) and both devices show up as unrecognized. They do not show up at all on the OS X (10.10.2) side of my computer. What's strange though, is that all USB 3.0 devices work perfectly. I tried an old USB 2.0 flash drive, didn't work.
Anyone have any thoughts? I have searched Google and these forums for the last two days to no avail.

To plug a 2.0 into a 3.0 you are using an adapter? Is this where the problem is? Even with the old flash drive? or did you also try using the 2.0 ports on your MBP? The adapter could be bad or the cables for your external devises. You did the steps you need to do to correct the problem. Other then that it would be a hardware problem. And you would need to take it to an apple store to be checked out.

  • 2nd generation ipod shuffle not recognized by usb 3.0 port, 2nd generation ipod shuffle not recognized by usb 3.0 port

    Hi,
My 2nd generation ipod shuffle will not connect to any usb 3.0 port.  I've tried on to computers -- one Windows XP and the other Windows 7.  Any ideas?

    Hi
I had the same issue with my Late 2009 Mac mini running Mavericks and iTunes 12. When I connected my 2nd generation iPod shuffle it would blink amber once then do nothing. This seems to be a common problem with the iPod shuffle and newer versions of Mac OS X (10.6 and up) and iTunes albeit with somewhat varying symptoms but the same overall problem syncing the iPod with iTunes.
The predominant go-to solution is to give the iPod more power by either connecting the iPod directly to a USB port on the Mac or by disconnecting all other USB devices. On paper this makes sense.
What worked for me, however, was the opposite. After trying to solve this problem for hours (weeks, months), I had success ONLY after adding a low-powered 4-port USB hub to the chain between the iPod and the Mac. I suspect this had the effect of throttling the power supplied to the iPod from the Mac. I was able to perform a restore on the iPod then sync my music over.
I can't tell you much about the USB hub except that it is running at USB 1.1 speeds (12 Mb/sec). In theory a USB 1.1 extension cable should also do the trick. You might even be able to use the USB hub in old wired Apple USB keyboard. I will attach a photo of the hub I used to this post for greater clarity.
    I really hope this helps.
