USB 7-port hub (powered) crashing G5 isight 10.4.11 and g4 soccer ball 10.3.9 iMacs--why, how fix?

It's definitely the usb 2.0 7-port hub--Staples brand, which they think is Belkin--hub several years old and fine until just recently, and happens with a brand new hub, too (also Staples, also believed to be Belkin).  The crash is a total freeze, usually during startup, restart, and shutdown but occasionally during app usage (esp. Safari).  Happens more when a jump drive is being accessed, but also happens when simply empty hub is on the system.  Get the slightly grey screen with small black box with message in 4 languages saying that I must restart my mac.  Have to hold down the power button for several seconds, or pull the power cord out, to get the mac to shut down, and then (if the hub is disconnected from the mac--direct usb hub connect, by the way, not from keyboard, and yes it has its own power supply--) it freezes during startup and needs the forced shutdown, followed by restart with forced shutdown a total of 3 times before all is good with the mac (with the hub no longer able to be used, though).  If the hub is left on the system, three-fourths of the restarts freeze and application freezes are more common.
I did Apple Hardware Test and I used TechTool Pro and Disk Utility (using a startup OS DVD) and there were no hardware problems found, and I zapped the PRAM, I reloaded the OS and updated to 10.4.11 three times, I wiped the hard disk and reloaded the OS and updated to 10.4.11 two times, and nothing fixes it if I keep using the hub.  I had a local person check out my G5 and clean the insides out and he found no hard disk, fans, dust, connections, etc. problems and could not reproduce my problem (he didn't attach anything but a mouse, keyboard, and ethernet cable for internet), but I reproduced it immediately with both the old and brand new hubs.
And I get the same problem with my G3 soccer ball iMac with OS 10.3.9 (or whatever the "newest" 10.3 version is), and that machine also had been just fine until recently.  But I don't know what's new that made this happen--was fine for several years until just recently.  My only changes recently have been the following, and while things got much worse in the last 4 weeks, there were some earlier problems with occasional freezes and jump drives not showing up on the hub prior to these updates:  update firmware for Apple Extreme base station, update MS Office 2004 with April 2011 updater (the former done via the G5, the latter done on both machines).
Oh, and my dock icon for widgets on the G5 has disappeared.
I haven't tried anything with my intel machine--it has a 4-port usb hub on it and has no problems--wife uses it.
I need at least 3 powered usb slots (printer, 16 Gb jump drive, wireless mouse) in addition to the keyboard slot, and sometimes I have 2 jump drives on the system at the same time and a usb headset.
Does anyone have any info on why this is happening, and more importantly, how to fix it?  Are there any USB hub makers that I should use instead of Belkin?  Is there some USB port firmware update I should get?  Will an intel Machine with 10.5 or 10.6 etc. fix this?  I'd like to avoid the expense of upgrading machines and OS for a few more months, at least.
Thanks.
[email protected] for any direct answers not wanted to be left here.

The gray screen with the box is a kernel panic.  When you restart, doesn't it tell you there was a problem and gives you the option of sending a report to Apple?  Near the top of that long report might be some clues as to what in particular caused the panic.

  • Where do I get the AC to DC Power Adapter for a Linksys "Compact USB 4-Port Hub [USBHUB4C]

I have two Compact USB 4-Port Hubs, Model Number USBHUB4C.  These Hubs can be powered, but I cannot find any information on External Power Adapters for these Hubs in any of the documentation or on the Linksys Web Site.
I need to know if Linksys has such Power Adapters available, and if so what the Model Numbers are, and how or where to purchase them.
If I will need a third party Power Adapter, I need to know what the Output Voltage & Current requirements are, and I also need to know the Polarity of the of the two Jack Contacts.  [i.e. Is the center pin on the Hub's Jack Positive or Negative?]  If possible I'd like to have a recommended Brand and Model Number for the Power Adapter.
    Thanks In Advance,
    Bruce

    Hi, again,
Boy, am I glad I was able to find an answer to my problem in here.  I find this very interesting. Here it is, almost 3 years after I made the original post, that I need to find the Power information, for this Device, again, but because of a Computer Crash, I could not get to the original notes, I made about this Forum Entry, so I began the search, again.
I find this very interesting. Here it is, almost 3 years after I made the original post, that I need to find the Power information, for this Device, again, but because of a Computer Crash, I could not get to the original notes, I made about this Forum Entry, so I began the search, again.
I have myriad AC/DC Converters, some of which are Voltage Selectable, but since the Power Specifications aren't on the HUB, or in the PDF Documentation, as is the case with most other Products, I came back to LinkSys/Cisco.  As soon as I entered the Model Number of the "Compact USB 4-Port HUBs, Model Number USBHUB4C," for a search, this Forum entry came up on the page, and it appears there haven't been any queries, on any other subject, about this Device, in the interim.
Since the entry has been Viewed 2,484 times, hasn't it dawned on someone that it might be a good idea to carry a Power Product, that is compatible with this HUB, or at least provide a Specific Source, with a Model Number, (for instance, a Radio Shack SKU) so we don't need to hunt for one, over, and over.  Why the information was never included in the package with the HUB, beats me.  (It should have been on the Device, itself.)
Anyone who knows anything about USB Devices, knows that many of them cannot be powered from the USB Ports on a Computer, especially, on Laptops.  Since one of the things mentioned in the Specifications is the fact that you can have "Max. Devices 127 (Daisy-chaining Hubs Together)," it would seem to be obvious that Power Information would be necessary.  Since the "Daisy Chain" number is true, it should be obvious, that the "Chain" would require quite a few AC/DC Adapters to power it, adequately.
When this Device was Designed, the requirement for External Power must have been known, or there would never have been a Power Connector built into the Device.  I've been in electronics for about 50 years, now, and I know that presently, it's a rarity that the Power Requirements aren't shown on the Device itself, with a Symbol depicting the Polarity of both the Inner, and Outer Conductors.  Even Toys have that information shown on them.
I love these HUBs, but LinkSys/Cisco has really dropped the ball on this one.  I'm guessing that a lot of people have discovered, that if this 4-Port USB HUB doesn't have External Power, they quickly decided not purchase another one, when they need to "Daisy Chain" them together, for their Network of USB Devices.
When you consider the loss of HUB Sales, coupled with a loss of income from a Power Supply they've never stocked, the numbers could be quite large.  That's not even considering the Support time I'm guessing would have been necessary when Customers determined they had a problem, and needed answers.  (It's not really a guess, since I talked to several Support People, without getting a satisfactory answer, before I finally came to this Forum, as a last resort.)
I was actually shocked to find that LinkSys/Cisco, didn't sell an AC/DC Power Supply for the HUB, because Power Supplies like that are so commonly required, with the Electronics sold, today.  I'd be willing to wager that LinkSys/Cisco does, in fact, carry an AC/DC Power Supply that would be compatible with the "Compact USB 4-Port HUBs, Model Number USBHUB4C," they sell.  When something like this happens, I wonder how many other Opportunities like this, have been missed by the people who work for this company.
We've all heard the expression about "Being too close to the Forest, to see the Trees."  This may be a good example of it's meaning.  At least I was able to find the answer to my Problem, thanks to the fact that the Query I made almost, 3 years ago, which had an answer, was still available to me, thanks to this Forum.
    Very Interesting!

  • Can the iMac G5 supports TWO USB 7-port Hubs??

Hi all, call me greedy but belive it or not, I am running out of USB ports!!
I have a Belkin 7-port USB 2.0 Powered Hub (with 2 ports pointing upbright) which serves me very well, but I am running out of ports, now that I am considering getting the new iPod nano.
Anyway, there are 3 ports behind the screen, now I have my Mighty Mouse, the Hub's USB cable and a HK Soundsticks attached.
I am thinking of getting another similar 7-port Hub, they are actually stackable, but of course I won't use all 7 ports fully on the 2nd new one.
Can the iMac supports and substain 2 USB hubs?? I have actually never seen anyone with more than 1 hub??
    Thanks and cheers

I have two USB hubs attached to my iMac G5 - they are both self-powered (their own power supply); one is a USB 2 with 6 ports and a multi card reader built in and the other my old USB 1 with 4 ports. They are plugged into the rear of my iMac along with the printer. Everything else, including keyboard and mouse, are plugged into the hubs and I am using a total of 8 ports - and everything works. I don't know if that would change if they weren't self powered.
    Hope this helps.

  • 19 working fine, downloaded 20 - it crashes frequently, hogs memory, runs scripts and slows down internet. I don't want a fix, just reinstall 19

FF 19 was working fine. Downloaded 20 and within 5 mins. it crashed. Script running problems again and it slows down my internet connection tremendously. I don't want to fix it, I want to go back to FF 19 but can't find it - it doesn't exist Running XP SP 3. If I can't go back to FF 19, then I'll just remove it and stick with Chrome. I like the old private browser in FF 19 better. I run 20 - 40 tabs open at a time and the way the new Private browser works with the existing window open just uses more memory Thanks!

  • On powering up I got a message date and time were changed to before 2008. Why would this happen?

I used the computer this morning to check email.  Shut it down and powered back up this afternoon and a box appeared telling me the date and time were set for before 2008 (actually for 12/31/2000) and needed to be reset.  Why would this happen?

No, it had 3:30 hours left.  I make it a point of not letting it drain.  I haven't had a problem since then, so I'm hoping all is ok.  Thanks

  • I am having issues with my iPhoto application. Anytime I connect my camera to my computer and try to import the photos, iPhoto crashes. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app but still no luck. How can this be fixed?

I have read other posts similiar to my problem to try those solutions such as searching for 3ivx add-on but it was not found on my computer. Not sure how to get iPhoto to start working again.

I import photos and the last time I imported photos was in November. Just recently I've tried importing photos again, with the same camera to the same version of iPhoto by connecting my camera and when I click "import" the program freezes and closes. After iPhoto closed the first time I thought that it was just an update that it needed so I updated iPhoto to the latest version. The same problem with importing is still occuring.

  • Airport Extreme, with Belkin usb 7 Port powered hub, with printer & 2 HD's

I have the Belkin usb 7 Port hub going into the Airport Extreme, my Macbook Pro sees the printer and prints fine, but doesn't see the 2 western digital mini hard drives My AE still has a green light. Is there something else I have to do? Thanks, Schooner

    Hi Schooner17-
    Are the drives bus-powered?
If so, do they work with the hub on a Mac? Do the drives work 1 at a time?
That hub might not supply enough juice to power both drives.
    Luck-
    -DP

  • Are those USB port hubs safe to use?

I bought one of those Belkin USB 4 port Hubs so that I can have more USB ports on my iMac.
I have the one that needs external power.
I was curious as to wether they can cause any damage to my iMac's ports? Here I am using 4 ports on this hub which is connected to a port on the iMac that is designed for 1 device right? Not 4 devices.
So can using 4 devices via a hub connected to a USB port designed to have 1 device to it, cause any damage to the ports?
Also - what about data corruption?
If I have 4 drives connected to the USB Hub, transferring files between them and to the computer, could this cause data to become corrupt?
So far I've had no problems but I use these USB ports to transfer large amounts of iimpotant data and cant afford anything going wrong..
    -Frank

It is perfectly safe (and encouraged by Apple) to use USB hubs. In fact, USB will support up to 127 peripherals chained together over one USB port. The only concern may be if a hub loses power in the middle of a file transfer, or gets disconnected. But that is the same for everything.
I have used USB hubs for many years without any problems.

  • What USB 3.0 hub for a new iMac14,2 ?

    Will a new iMac14,2 support a USB 3.0 hub?
    What models work?
A scanner and a printer will be USB 2.0.  An external drive and CD reader/writer will be USB 3.0.
Is there a way to connect these devices to retain USB 3.0 speed on the USB 3.0 devices?

Yes a new iMac will support a USB 3 hub, however like ANY hub connected to an iMac it needs it's own power supply.
USB 3 is backwards compatible to USB 2, no need to worry about that.

The USB/Power port on my 8830 is broken.  Can I download my contact info to a MicroSD card?  How would I do this?  Any other thoughts?  I don't have ithe phone backed up, but will get a replacement from Verizon. Thanks

No, moving contacts to a microSD card is not possible.  The only way to get the info from the device would be via bluetooth to make a backup to Desktop Manager.  In order for Desktop Manager to connect using bluetooth, you need to have the basic Windows drivers installed and not any 3rd party drivers like Widcomm or Toshiba, etc.  When it works, it's quite simple.  When it doesn't, it can get complicated.

  • Looking for a wall powered hub with the ports being powered up to 15 watts

Anyone know where I can find one?
Mac Mini 1.42 8X DVD+-RW Dual Layer 24X CD-RW 250 Gig Firewire startup drive   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Apple Bluetooth keyboard 19" Samsung 960BF DVI LCD 1 Gig Memory iSight

Well I have found my solution. The firewire port on the mini puts out 8 watts of power and it is powering a firewire drive with USB 2 and Firewire 400 port an iPod and an iSight.
After doing a lot of research and talking to Belkin and Otherworld Computing they said it is most likely a power issue as iMovie would require the iSight to draw more power to display the larger image for the imovie view window. They said the Belkin f5u524 4 port hub has powered firewire ports of 12.5 watts each and the power come from the wall unit not the firewire cable.
I think I have found my solution.

  • Power USB Hub - powers the Airport Base Station (802.11n)?

I have a powered USB hub hooked up to my new AE. If I pull the power plug for the AE, the unit remains partially powered via the USB port (my hub). It won't power down until I also remove the USB plug into the AE.
Anybody else seen this? Is this normal? Is this an AE problem? Is this a problem with my USB hub?

By partially powered I mean, when I unplug the AE, the light on the front remains on but flashing. Why would I unplug it? Because I want to reboot it because my cable modem dropped the connection and I could not get the connection back. I attempted to power down the cable modem and router but I left the printer, HD's, and the USB hub powered up.

  • Are the USB/Firewire ports powered?

I have an external hard drive that is powered by the USB of my powerbook- and I noticed that the 20" display features usb and firewire ports.
Are they self powered? (the spare ports on the apple keyboard are not- i.e. yu can't charge ipod from them)
    Any advice is appreciated
    Thank you

    The official specifications say:
<< Two-port, self-powered USB 2.0 hub, two FireWire 400 ports and Kensington security port >>
So the USB hub should be self-powered. However, from my experience, connecting the iPod (or any other bus-powered USB device) to the display doesnot work as expected.
Maybe it's because I have all four ports (USB and FW400) occupied, and one of the FW devices is also bus-powered.

  • I would like to know if a USB 2.0 Hub will function well in a 2014 rMBP USB 3.0 Port?

I just purchased a rMBP and I need 4-5 powered USB slots for devices. There have been many reported problems with USB 3.0 Hubs on the rMBP. I want to know if anyone who was having problems was able to return to using a UBS 2.0 Hub?
Will a USB 2.0 Hub function through the New rMBP's USB 3.0 port? Will there be spontenous errors and freezes?
My devices are all USB 2.0

I knew it was several years old, I had one and never got it to work with my iPhone 3G. I use the Kensington, looks like half a ball, but just about any new one should work. Keep in mind if you connect a lot of devices that are pulling power it may affect it.
