using bootcamp, was installing windows xp, at the select ntfs or fat format mistakenly selected "leave the current file system intact." How can that be changed to a correct choice. Mac side opens correctly. Windows shows disk error. and doesn't respond to press any key. When looking in the startup disk section, windows on boot camp can be seen, but not selected. (13"MacBook Pro 10.6.8)

It now opens to a user who is virtually never on - which is actually me under a different name. This division of my Mac happened when I switched to my new Mac and didn't know I had to use the same name to transfer my data. My old data is listed as a separate user. Over time my old user name brings up a window full of ???? at the bottom. It looks like no apps ever upgrade there. It is driving me crazy to have to now switch back each time I start my computer. (I am using an iMac with 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor).

What is the FAT file system and how can I format my LEXAR flash drive with it?

Recently, Apple support helped me download my songs form iTunes to a LEXAR flash drive. I connected it to the USB connector in my car. My car's display said
"unsupported". My other LEXAR usb plays music perfectly. What is wrong? My car's manual says that my audio system reads and plays audio files on the USB flash memory device in MP3, WMA, AAC formats. (AAC format files recorded with iTunes only.) How do I correct this problem?

Reformatting the drive will completely erase it so make sure you have copies of the files.
FAT format is an older non-Mac format but is still found on plenty of things such as flash drives. It's the one format that both Macs and Windows computers can fully use but it has limitations outside small-scale use. Your Apple person must have reformatted your drive to Mac format which wasn't very smart of the person since almost nothing except Apple products can work with Mac format. Are you sure you explained how you intended to use the drive, or did you just ask the person how to put files on there?

Now I want to move these 250 songs from nano to new Windows XP labtop, but it showed "restore" while connecting to new labtop... I really don't want to lose these 250 songs..... Shirley, it is possible to move files from an iPod to a PC, but it is not easy. (Search this site if you want to give it a try.) If you still have access to the Mac, it would be much easier to move the files from the Mac to the Windows machine, and then sync the iPod.
To move the files, you can copy to an external HD and then copy to the PC. Or, if you have a flash drive of at least 512 Meg, you could use it to move the 250 songs in 2 or 3 batches.

You will need to perform an Internet Recovery or be able to boot the computer using a Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later DVD. For the former:
Restart the computer and at the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys until you see a globe appear in the gray startup screen. This may take a little while so be patient. You need to have an internet connection for this to work - preferably using Ethernet.
After a fairly long period of time - 15 minutes or more - the recovery screen will appear. Select Disk Utility from the main menu, and click on the Continue button.
1. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
2. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
3. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
5. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
6. After formatting is done quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Install OS X from the main menu and click on the Continue button. Follow the onscreen instructions to install OS X onto the internal drive.

I have a MacBook older model with me.I am running 10.7.6 on that, I was trying to use BootCamp to install windows on my mac. Since BootCamp can only work on a single Volume, I partitioned my Hard Disk to one volume.
Using BootCamp I installed windows and everything worked fine. After installing windows and testing everything, I switched back to OS X and this time I tried to make another partition on my single portioned Mac volume and named it Backup. That too worked. Now I have three Volumes
1)Development2)Backup3)BootCamp.
Next when I switched to Windows, It should the classic error, No Bootable device found, please insert a Bootable CD and press any key. When I tried to enter my Mac OS X install DVD and by pressing option key, it does not show me the proper Mac OS X development volume. It keeps going back to the No bootable device found message.
Any help will be much appreciated

you can't add a partition in between - you put Windows to a new partition number.
GPT (GUID)
EFI
Mac HFS
Lion Recovery
Windows
And now you have two HFS
One partition and one Windows (plus Lion Recovery).
If you were to have more, it can't be before Windows for one thing.

Never mind -- I just found it under Tools/Options.../Applications, where I changed the incorrect association of "nlmcp" from Windows Media Player to the correct one, NetLibrary Media Center. Done!

Time Machine is nice, but you have very little in terms of ability to verify that your data is all backed up. I find Time Machine is better for the occasional recovery of previously written data at specific times. A good backup solution that survives an erase and install (there is no clean install in Mac OS X), is a clone, and preferably TWO clones. See my FAQ*:

Time Machine can work as good as a clone, and in fact I once had to rely on it because my hard drive died. Thankfully it did recover everything. But I had my clone just in case it didn't work. Now I feel more comfortable since clones allow you to boot themselves, and thus prove all the important system information got saved, and not just the user data.
Clones are also easier to import with the migration assistant.

I mostly use technology for education and professional audiovisuals and lights.
I don't sync music because I use music from at least 4 different computers. (manually mange music)
I use my iPad to play performance tracks for church and a local gospel group out of our church, Won4Christ.
I chose to buy the iPad because the laptop of one of the group members (dellxps running iTunes) was randomly losing and mixing up music and I wanted a more stable option that was bigger than my iPod touch.
I tried to add some data to music libraries that I previously added to my iPad, but the data only shows up when looking at the device in iTunes.
Wifi sync has not worked on either my laptop or desktop ( both running windows 7 enterprise 64 and newest iTunes) not really a big issue, but very annoying
When browsing through library playlist albums on the iPad, random artwork shows up on playlists with no artwork that you touch while dragging, and it does not go away until you change to another navigation tab and back.
Random songs out of hundreds that I added showed up in iTunes grayed out with a sync circle beside them. Those songs would play back okay on the iPad but were unplayable through the iTunes device view. I had to delete the songs manually through the library along with the playlist and add them again.
These seem to be major stability bugs in the "new" music app and iTunes. My only option right now seems to be to delete the songs that I want to change and re-add them with the changes already applied rather than changing the id3 tags and artwork on the existing music. I hope apple will release updates to resolve these issues.

Using bootcamp to install XP followed by Photoshop and other Adobe products

I just got MacBook Pro and am about to use Bootcamp to install Windows XP so that I can use Photoshop and other such Adobe programs. Anybody, who has done this, what can you tell me about it? Does it work well? How much of a partition do you recommend? Have you encountered any problems during this process? Are there any major dangers involved with installing XP on my mac?

I have done all of the above with No Issues thus far:
1) Boot Camp/Windows partition I use is 50MB for XP SP2
2) I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0 installed
3) No problems on my side
I printed out the Boot Camp/Windows instructions and followed them exactly.
