Using ffmpeg or x264 to create DNT Blu-ray files

I am trying to find some way to batch create Blu-ray compliant video files.  My source is 720p59.94 mp4 video-only files.  Ideally, I would like to do this from the command line.  I have tried the following ffmpeg command with a fresh cross-compile:
x264options = "bluray-compat=1:force-cfr=1:weightp=0:bframes=3:ref=3:nal-hrd=vbr:vbv-maxrate=40000:vbv- bufsize=30000:keyint=60:b-pyramid=strict:slices=4:no-interlaced=1:aud=1:colorprim=bt709:tr ansfer=bt709:colormatrix=bt709:sar=1/1"
strCmd = "ffmpeg.exe -y -i " & chr(34) & INPUT_PATH & INPUT_FILE & chr(34) & " -c:v libx264 -level:v 4.1 -preset veryslow -tune film -crf 16 -r 60000/1001 -x264opts " & x264options & " -x264-params " & x264options & " -c:a copy " & chr(34) & OUTPUT_PATH & OUTPUT_NAME & chr(34)
I have also tried an x264.exe solution (from 720p - Authoring a professional Blu-ray Disc with x264):
x264 --bitrate XXXXX --preset veryslow --tune film --bluray-compat --vbv-maxrate 40000 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --level 4.1 --keyint 60 --open-gop --slices 4 --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --sar 1:1 --pass 1 -o out.264 input.file
And neither method results in a file that I can import into Encore CS6 that is detected as DNT.  I saw a post in this forum pointing to this tutorial: Bellune Digital Video Services - Tutorials - Adobe Encore – Using x264 To Encode Video For Blu-ray Disc Authoring.  However, it's saying I need to use x264pro?  What is this?  Shouldn't I be able to achieve the same thing with the open source VideoLAN x264.exe?
Does anyone have a method of doing command line processing that works with ffmpeg or VideoLAN's x264.exe to get video files prepared for Encore?

Hiya.
In the first place, I would personally avoid batching - you save no time at all as each file still has to be checked as 99% of all DVD & BluRay problems are caused by bad assets.
ffmpeg I would also avoid as it is a collection of hacked, reverse engineered & freeware codecs, and neither MPEG-2 (DVD & BD) or AVC are free codecs.
x264 Pro works beautifully out of Premiere Pro though, and there is a plugin version designed to set the correct flags (264 for BluRay & 264 for web are very different animals indeed) at only $300 and that is cheap given TotalCode went for £15,000 when sold!! All authors should own this. There is simply no good reason not to, and furthermore the implementation in VideoLAN is designed to be all things, but Blu-Ray has some very specific requirements for 264 files - x264 Pro sets these for you and does it very, very well - do not try to cut corners on asset preparation as this is 99% of the work.
Next up - I have to ask - what is DNT and what does it have to do with Blu-Ray? I've been making BluRay for a while now & have never heard of it, and cannot see much online except illegal torrents flagged as DNT.

  • General Overview on How to use Final Cut Studio to create a Blu-Ray DVD

I am a new user of Final Cut Studio and need an experienced user to give my a progression guide on how to create a Blu-Ray DVD of my recent Alaska Trip. Last month I spend 8 days in Alaska visiting Denali and Juneau primarily. During that time I took about 100 short video clips (HD 1080p) and 570+ still photos with my Canon 7D. I have experimented with some pieces of the software and have created a Blu-Ray disk using Final Cut Pro and Compressor. However my goal is to create this DVD with menus that will play short clips (some narrated) and still photos(also some narration). I did a short one in DVD Studio Pro this morning but need some general guidance on what progression and programs to use to create this project. I was not able to take my video from the Studio Pro Sequence I created for my 1st DVD I had to take the original clips which were processed using Apple ProRes 422 and copy them in one at a time and then find the audio (on the voice overs) I created and also place them into DVD Studio Pro one at a time. I obviously need some guidance on the proper progression.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's the situation...
DVD Studio Pro will not do the trick for you - it doesn't do blu-ray discs. If you want to do Blu-ray you've got to use either Final Cut Pro's "Export" command or Compressor's "Burn Blu-ray disc" template. The downside to both of these approaches is that you can't burn more than one title (or movie, etc.) using Final Cut Studio.
To do what you want to do, you need Toast (at least). Toast will auto-generate menus but will let you put more than one title per slide (so you can put multiple slideshows on the same disc).
If you want to do full-on customizing of menus and multi-level menus, for that you need Adobe's Encore.
My suggestion - Get Toast. Encore is close to $800.
Here's your progression (at least the one I use).
Edit in Final Cut Pro (ProRes 422 is fine, ProRes 422 LT would do the trick as well)
Export as QuickTime movies (original settings)
In Compressor using the H.264 for Blu-ray setting and Dolby Digital setting and create elementary streams for video (.264 file) and audio (.ac3). Make sure these files have identical names except for the extension.
Using toast, add the video file to the Toast project and it'll find the audio file.
    Burn away!

The command is gone because iDVD has been discontinued by Apple. After Apple discontinued iDVD they removed the iDVD burning link from iMovie. I still use iDVD sometimes, only because I have an old copy.

Again, what is the best rate?  Furthermore, which format is more suitable or the best: H264 or mpeg 2/4?
I don't know what RF means. When I have used HandBrake, I've used presets that apply to what I want to do, so I don't know the meaning of each individual setting. However, it appears that many of them are listed in the HandBrake User's Guide that is linked from the Help menu in the program:

Photoshop is not amateur-level software, and although it can edit a video, it cannot burn a DVD. Unfortunately, because I still use iMovie, I haven't tried anything else. You might want to read the reviews of various DVD-burning applications in the Mac App Store.

  • How to create a blu-ray disc with multiple source files

    Hello,
How is it possible to create a blu-ray disc, AVCHD recordable DVD with multiple source files from Final Cut Pro 10. Is it possible to create a menu with several chapters corresponding to the sequences (source files)?
Thank you in advance for your support.

Assume you're talking about using the Create Blu-Ray batch template. It's not possible to do with multiple source filles. But if I understand your objectives, you could pretty much get what you think want – discrete movie segments on a single disk with navigation.
The way I'd approach it is by making multiple projects in FCP and then copying the finished versions into a new project, separated by gaps. (You could also use compound clips but I'm not a fan except for very short sequences, which is why I'm suggesting the copy route.) Then export and bring into Compressor.
In Compressor mark your chapters at the gaps between your individual sequences. Then choose the AVCHD option in job actions.
Bear in mind that you'll have to keep the recording time under roughly 30-35 minutes @a5 Mbts/sec
    Good luck.

  • Creating a Blu-Ray disc:

    Hello,
I tried to create a blu-ray disc witj Fonal Cut Pro 7 (menu Share) and with Final Cut Pro X Trial (menu Share), but both the times after a certain period of processing (about an and a half) an error message appears, QuickTime Error:0
Has anyone experienced such a problem, I can't burn a Blu-Ray disc with my bramd new HD drive and it seems that Final Cut Pro has a problem? Before buying Final Cut Pro X ...
    Thank you in advance

it's just copying files to it, not video.  If you put a blank blu-ray disk in the drive, it may show up in the finder.  A program like Toast can burn a blu-ray.

I used the digital download from my purchased Blu-Rays and they will not sync with either my iPad or iPhone 4, saying they did not transfer because I am not authorized on this computer. I tried de-authorizing and re-authorized my MacBook Pro alreadydigial

I just got a Touch 32GB yesterday and ran into the same problem. I have two PCs in the house that I can sync my iPods on, but I normally use one that DOESN'T have an internet connection, so that the one that does is free for others to use ... a great argument and tension solution, btw.
Anyway, I hooked up the older "iTunes" PC to the net for a first-time sync with the Touch, and ran into this problem. First it kept detecting the Touch as an unidentified iPhone, then I couldn't sync my classic either. Then I found a post here about how when multiple USB ports running off same USB controller seem to screw with the Touch/iPhone syncing.
So I disconnected all but 2 of my USB 2.0 slots (the Touch & the Portable HD with my iTunes Library) and now it's working perfectly. I don't know if this will solve your problem, but it might be worth a try.

  • Is PrProCS3 able to encode H.264 Blu-ray file?

It seems I overestimated the capabilities of CS3.  I have been unable to export a file to create a Blu-ray disc.
    System specs:
    2009 Mac Pro 4,1 3.33GHz Quad core
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 (Apple)
    16GB RAM
640GB HD for OS X 10.6.4, and all programs
3x 1TB HD in RAID 0 via Apple RAID card for data, scratch
LG WH10LS30 10x Super-Multi Blu-ray burner (kit for Mac Pro from OWC)
Adobe Production Premium CS3 (updated to 3.2.0 for Pr)
    File specs:
DVCProHD P2 MXF footage, shot on Panasonic AG-HVX200P
    1280x1080 29.97(24P), aspect ratio = 1.5
    Project settings:
    DVCProHD 1080i/1080p, 60Hz
    23.976 frame rate, progressive scan
The project is 1 hour 32 minutes long, and I've tried Export to Encore, Export to AME and Export Movie to H.264 Blu-ray m4v, using the preset for 1080p High Quality 24p and 23.976fps.  Codec is MainConcept H.264.  The target bitrate is 25Mbps, Max 30Mbps.  I've tried both Main and High profile.  After I post this question, I'll be trying to change VBR to 1-pass, since it gets through the first pass during encoding every time, but crashes Pr during the second pass.  It doesn't even make it to Encore... it just won't encode the export file, despite my attempts to follow all the rules.
I'm out of ideas.  I don't want to give up and say Premiere Pro CS3 is worthless to me until I can confirm that as a fact.  I purchased CS5, and it's sitting on my shelf awaiting installation, but I thought switching versions in the middle of a feature film edit was bad, so I've been holding off.  However, if CS3 is unable to produce a Blu-ray copy, I might have to try that next.

    Hi,
I have cs3 but dont have a machine powerful enough to edit HD of any kind that is more than about maybe 20 min ...I have a PC.
It slows up a LOT if I have HD on my timeline and I add effects etc.  That is why I haven't responded to your thread.
I have (approx ) a dual core 3ghz cpu and 4 gig ram, 2 hard drives with OS and programs on boot drive and projects on 2nd drive. I have no problems with SD video at all but HD is just NOT something I can do.
I suspect there may be some others using CS3 that also shun large HD projects simply due to the machines they have.
With the new 64bit OS and CS5, allowing PC users to actually "see" more than 4gig of ram, most HD users are now using new 64 bit OS and CS5....with a lot of ram and multiple cpu's and raid drive setups.
Although this doesnt help you out a lot re: your problem, at least it might explain a little bit why so few have responded yet...it's simply because I don't think that many cs3 ( 32 bit program ) users have done what you are trying to do.
Perhaps you could try exporting to encore for blue ray a very small segment of ONE timeline, and see if your hardware works OK with THAT...  ??  Sorry I can't help more

  • Can PE9 burn Blu-ray files to DVD?

I do not have a Blu-ray burner and do not anticipate getting one for a year or two.  I was not able to burn or copy Blu-ray files in PE7 and ask if it can be done in PE9.  I did download the trial version of Sony Vegas HD Movie Studio Suite and was able to burn the Blu-ray files to the hard drive and to a DVD; that DVD played brilliantly on both Samsung and LG Blu-ray players.  I have a lot invested in Premier over the years and would prefer to upgrade.
The machine is 2.67ghz dual core, 4gb of RAM and a 500gb RAID 0 hard drive with more than 175gb free.

Lots of other posts on this subject in this forum
    Yes it can - but
My first attempt played on other players except my new Pioneer player. (Full HD)
The video on the disk was perfect on my computer.
I copied the file produced on the Blue Ray disk and used a simple authoring program (PowerProducer that cam with my burner) to burn another disk.
    This plays perfectly in everything.
The only thing I can think of is that my LG player can write at 8x but I only had 4x blank disks (they are much cheaper). PE9 does not have any speed setting so perhaps the "grooves" werent burnt deep enough??
or the name of the main folder on a PE9 burnt disk is different - maybe my player did not like it??
I have a similar computer setup to you except you definately need at least 2 hard drives. The video on one and the project on a second one.
You need a good fast video card for HD smooth preview, not just the one on the motherboard.
Also look at recent posts on memory settings for resources.
I split my raid up to 2 seperate disks and installed a third large disk for video capture files
    OS & PE9 on C
    Video on E
Project and adove cache files on F
LG computer burner is available for around $100

  • How to read an arborescence of blu-ray files  ?

    Hi,
I don't have a bluray reader, but I was wondering if I could read blu-ray files with a software, maybe VLC ?
    Sincerely

I didn't mean read a disc, only files, the same that are on the disc but on my HD.
You still need a Blu-ray drive. You won't be able to watch Blu-ray movies, but OS X will be able to read data files (and write data and movie Blu-ray discs with Toast).

  • Exported blue ray files currupt

    For a 98min project:
I exported an m2v BluRay settings file from a 1080p ProRes Timeline and then tried a h.264 export and the files that come out are currupt and wont open?
Why is the file bloating all of the sudden? Is this a problem with Premiere or Encore? or is this a codec problem?
    Thanks

It may just be the file size. It is 20 GB Blu ray file. It wont play in quicktime pro or VL it locks up.
When I try to drag it into Encore I just get the spin wheel.
Weird thing is I exported a h.264 5 min test, and I tried to preview it and it just locked up quickitme, finder preview, and VLC each time I tried it. Weird.

  • Creating 1080p Blu-Ray with Final Cut Pro 10.0.7?

The latest version of Final Cut Pro (Vers 10.0.7) seems to share to Blu-Ray disk only at 720p resolution (1280X720) - not 1080P (1920X1200).  I know you can always use Compressor to create a 1080p Blu-Ray, but is there any way to create a 1080p Blu-Ray disk directly with Final Cut Pro?  It seems to me I was able to do this with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro X.

If you do a 1080 project @24fps or 29.97fps, FCPX will output 1080 frame size using the Blu-Ray settings. If you use Share >BD for either 720 or 1080 @ 60fps, it will choose the 720 resolution.
I have no idea whether this was always the case.

  • Create a Blu-Ray with Chapters

I have created a project in FCPX. I want to add Chapter Markers, Create a Chapter Menu, Burn to Blu-Ray, and finally be able to play the Blu-ray on my Blu-Ray player and be able to “jump” from Chapter to Chapter while watching the Blu-ray. As I understand it, FCPX DOES not allow you to create Chapter Markers and you need to use Compressor. Can somebody provide me with a Step by step procedure for accomplishing what I want to do? Is there a Tutorial or something that explains this process? Can it even be accomplished? Is there some other product that is better and easier to use then Compressor? In reading the Compresoor Manual I came across Job Actions which appeared to accomplish everything I was looking for, but I was not 100% certain. Thanks in advance for any help someone may be able to provide.

    Barry,
Here is one way. (There are others, but in the interest of conserving space…)
Export your movie using export media.
Open Compressor and select the Create Blu Ray Disk from the Batch Template window. (You'll get an audio and a video target.)
Drag your exported movie to the source well.
    Open the Preview window.
Use the timeline playhead to scrub through your movie and identify where you want to set your chapter markers. Hit M to set a marker.
To the right of the TL scroll bar, there is a (tiny) button. Open it and it will allow you to edit the marker.
Click on Edit and then you can name your marker.
    Repeat as necessary.
When you open the job actions tab, it should give your blu ray burner as an option.
    Good luck.

  • Creating a blu-ray

I am looking into purchasing an external blu-ray burner. One thing the company told me whose product I am interested in is If I want
the Blu-ray to play back on a normal Blu-ray player connected to a TV, like a typical commercial film on a Blu-ray disc, special Blu-ray
authoring software is required. (They referenced the Compressor app is able to do this.)
Is there a difference between burning to Blu-ray directly from Final Cut vs. exporting from Final Cut and using Compressor? Just trying to understand the difference, if any.
    Thank you.

The difference is that in Compressor you have more control over the settings – adjusting bit rates, Frame Controls, fiilters, etc.
They both use Compressor to encode and Create DIsk to make the disk. In the case of FCPX, Compressor and Create Disk are embedded apps.

  • Problems Creating a Blu-ray Disc with a Main (Static) Menu and Pop-up Menus

I'm having problems creating a simple Blu-ray disc containing a Main Menu (Static Menu with a graphic for my background) and a single Pop-up menu assigned to all of my timelines.  I wouldn't think this would be so hard to create but every attempt I've made ends up with the navigation getting all messed up to the point that my Playstation 3 doesn't even recognize that the disc as being Blu-rey disc.
I want a simply static Main menu containing a "Play all" Button, and a button for each additional timelines.  Im also using the override commands on my buttons so if someone just chooses to see one specific clip from the main menu, they will be taken back to the main Menu after their selected clip plays.  But then I also want a Pop-up menu assigned to the timelines so the viewer can switch to a different clip (timeline) without having to go back to the Main (static) menu.
My Blu-ray Disc runs just fine if I only use a static menu in a project, or if I only use a single Pop-up menu assigned to each timeline, but not both a Static Main menu, and pop-up menus.  I'm using CS4

  • How to create 720p blu-ray menu

I figured something out and thought it would be worth sharing.
I'm using Encore CS5 to author a blu-ray but had trouble authoring a menu that wasn't 1080p.  The entire footage of my disc is 720p @ 60fps and so I'd like the main menu, which is supposed to be simply text/buttons over a looping video that is also 720p @ 60, to match the rest of the disc.  But everything I tried resulted in a 1080p menu.  Even if I started with a blank HD menu, the resulting menu size was 1920x1080.  This resulted in my main menu looping video getting stretched and re-encoded, and reduced to 30fps as well.
The solution was to create a 1280x720 blank photoshop file, then Import As -> Menu...in the Project panel.  That provided me with a 1280x720 blank menu that stayed that way when I was building it.

BR does not do 1080p only in 24p.
