Using iPod classic (or any iPod) as OSX startup disc?

hi there
does anybody know whether it is possible to use an iPod classic (i have the 160GB) as a startup disc (emergency startup disc) for any mac computer (ie. mac mini or MBP)?
i already use an external 500 GB disc via USB, which works well, though very very slow. so i thought this should work with an iPod too, once activating the "use as volume" option. true?
thanks and cheers

hi niel
thanks for your post. clear. i was actually less thinking about running a mac then from the iPod but just having a better option (with some own system settings) than just a startup CD in case of troubles.
i don't really get though why this should overheat the iPod as when you use it as simple sound player it is also accessing the hard disk constantly. don't see much difference there. however, i have no warranty left and my previous iPod died a few weeks after the warranty expired. murphy's law.
right now i am using the USB 500GB external hard drive as startup disk with a new mac mini because my MPB is broken and i had to send it to repair, so the easiest way which would allow me to use all my data (and the HD in the MBP is a 500 GB, but in the mac mini only 320) was to take the original HD out of the MBP and purchase a case and this way i can use it from any mac. i purchased another 500GB disk and copied all the data on it and placed it in the MBP before i sent it to fix. the problem is most likely hard ware related and i hope to get it back soon to be able to work with speed again...
by the way, the original MBP hard disk which i use now as an external gets way less hot now than it used to be when in the MBP.
this just to explain you why i always like to have one more copy of my settings somewhere and ideally as a startup drive, and since my iPod is not full...
thanks again for your post. highly appreciated.
cheers

CAN I CONNECT MY IPOD CLASSIC TO ANY COMPUTER AND UPDATE ANY MUSIC THAT I HAVE PURCHASED FROM ITUNES ON MY IPAD?

Plug the iPod into the new computer.  When it pops up on the left sidebar, right-click on the iPod and select "Transfer Purchases".  Make sure that you Authorize the computer to play content purchased with that account, or else the music will not play.

  • ITunes immediately ejecting my two iPod Classics and my Ipod Nano (6gen)

ITunes ejects my two iPod Classics and my iPod nano (6th gen). All synced fine a few days ago, never had any problems. None of them are used as disks. If I uninstall iTunes, they will mount and I can see all three of them in Disk Utility. Verify Disk ➔ no problems. If I open iTunes, all three are disconnected by iTunes before they show up in the program. And they are ejected by Disk Utility such that the Mac no longer sees them.
IPhone 5 on the latest software, iPhone 6+ and iPad 3 all sync just fine.
Tried deleting all the com. preferences, etc. Uninstalling and re-installed iTunes twice, trashed SyncServices file, no resolution. Seems to me it's something to do with iTunesHelper refusing the connection between the iPods.
Running Yosemite 10.10.2, could be the update to the pre-release beta that did it. Or could be installing Last.fm Scrobbler, but that was completely eliminated, so I'm guessing it's the pre-release beta.
    Any suggestions?

The answer is rolling back to 10.10.1 from Time Machine. Doing that solved my problem.

  • WE have 2 Ipod classics and 1 IPod touch. One of the classics is not recognised by itunes library under devices and cannot be synchrinised with a playlist

We have 2 Ipod classics and 1 Ipod touch. One of the classics is not recognised by the itunes library and therfore canoot be synchonised with a playlist.

The second shuffle cannot be recognized by this computer ("USB Device Cannot be Recognized") so I don't think I'm able to reset it using that (it says "iPod is not recognized by iTunes, but is *visible in My Computer or in Device Manager* on a Windows PC, or in Apple System Profiler on a Mac.")
Like I said though, it works on other computers just fine and is visible so I don't quite understand what's up with this computer.

Bought an iPod Classic.  First iPod, had a Zen for years, I want to transfer my music library, approximately 15,000 songs without creating an iTunes Media library.  All of the music is currently in WMA format.  As you can imagine, 15,000 songs takes up a lot of space and I do not wnat it duplicated on my harddrive in an iTunes Media Library.  What are my options?-Shawn

Change your mind, or change your device.
You can't put wma files on an iPod classic. You can't put files onto an iPod without adding them to a media library first.

  • Ipod Classic Wiped, Any Advice ?

Last week my Ipod classic wiped itself. This occured after I had tried to listen to a podcast where it kept freezing. Confusingly although the Ipod says that there is no music/video/podcasts on there it states that it has 7.9 GB of memory used. Thinking back it has been acting oddly over the last few months somethimes podcasts would suddenly stop and return to the menu when I hadn't pushed any buttons (or at least I thought I hadn't) and on a least one other occasion it had wiped itself (although reconnecting it to my computer quickly resoved that). I have had this Ipod for slightly over 2 years (I bought it in August 2009), so is there anything that can be done to save it ?

Sounds like it may need a Restore.

  • Just got new PC with Picasa 3 but worried it might not be compatible with my photos previously synced to ipod-classic.  Any advice?

Just got a new PC (Windows 7 with Picasa 3 installed).  Not used Picasa before & worried this might not be compatible with i-tunes if I connect my ipod-classic.  Have reinstalled i-tunes on new PC but scared that all my existing photo files on the ipod might not stay the same if I connect the ipod to the PC.  Any advice please?

I know that they are on my computer. I'm saying, they're in ONE folder titled "iPhone" with separate folders in it titled by the dates the photos were added. I put them ALL in one folder thinking that the photos were listed in chronological order, not starting from 001 for each folder, and not there are duplicates, not of the pictures, but of the names. Ex. There's a picture of me titled 001.jpg and another of a friend titled 001 (1).jpg. See what I'm saying?
If I were to do backup, which I do not know how to do, I think it'd backup from THAT location where all my photos sync when I plug in my iPhone and the dialog box pops up. I'm not trying to get the pictures back onto my phone, I just want to make a 'backup' of ALL of them, at once, to replace the other folder with the duplicates, on my PC.

  • Hi, is there a way to sync my iPod classic with my iPod touch without using a pc? I have also have an iPad2 if that can help??

HI, I have an iPod touch with all my songs on it and also have a 5th gen classic which is connected to my car. My laptop died on me a while back and I replaced it with an iPad 2.  I now am unsure how I can keep updating my classic seeing as I no longer have a pc with iTunes on it?
IS there a way I can continue purchasing music via my iPod touch/iPad and then sync them with my iPod classic for he car?  I don't really want to have to buy a new laptop just for iTunes!
I have seen iTunes match being talked about and am wondering if this could be a solution, but again not sure how I will get new purchases on I the classic as its not wireless etc?!
THanks in advance for any help.

No.  You can sync content directly from an iPod to another iPod or iPad.  The content you wish to transfer needs to be in your iTunes library first.

  • Transferring music from an ipod classic to another ipod using itunes

help! im not technical minded so please be gentle!
I have an ipod classic which I need to transfer all the music content to another ipod which I bought second hand.  I cant seem to establish how to do this - im trying to drag them to a playlist in my iTunes but its not having it- then I wanted to connect the new ipod and just drag them across but it doesn't seem to be as easy as that.  I don't want my entire music library on the new ipod - I just want the songs I have on my old ipod classic.
Please can someone help.  im so not technical minded and its very mind boggling.
would appreciate any help  many thanks

You cannot transfer directly from one device to another. Pull all of the content into your library then sync what you want to each device. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HELP ! - what shall i go for ipod classic 80gb or ipod video 30gb

    Help me please,
what would you go for if you were me
ipod classic 80 or video 30gb
or any other if you know of anything better
    What have you got ?

    Hi denbigh,
I actually don't own either of those types of iPods, myself (I have two Nanos). But I do have a thought for you that you might want to consider.
I think it would be the best idea to go with the 80gb Classic, since you'll probably find that you'll use more space in videos and music on your iPod than you thought you would when you originally purchased the iPod.
You don't want to find yourself stuck with a 30gb iPod if you fill it up pretty soon, wishing if you had more storage space on your iPod. Now, of course, this all depends on how big your iTunes library is, which I don't know, or if you really wouldn't mind having to delete some content off of your iPod to make space for different things.
But, at least just for the reason of giving yourself a comfortable amount of memory at your disposal, I think you probably ought to go with the Classic.

  • IPod Classic [Error 1439] - iPod won't restore

My iPod Classic was working fine until yesterday when I plugged it in to update my iTunes library.  iTunes said the iPod was corrupted and I must restore it and lose all data loaded onto it. That seemed bad enough, but then the restore failed and I got this message about Error 1439. I looked this up and it was on a page with lots of other error codes, I tried all the steps recommended and it has got me nowhere. So now I've got an iPod that when it is unplugged says it has zero songs on it but in terms of the space available it says it is full.  When I plug it in it isn't recognised in My Computer and iTunes only recognises it initially when I plug it in with the restore screen I've already mentioned that features the restore button that leads straight back to the Error 1439 message - after that the iPod disappears from iTunes completely and you can't even eject it because there is no recognition that it is plugged in at all. Following the steps recommended in the iPod Classic troubleshooter / wizard didn't help, so now I just don't know what to do. Both the iPod and iTunes are updated to the most recent version, so has anyone got any useful advice? - The fact the Error 1439 message has already appeared on one of Apple's help pages along with other possible error messages suggests to me this must have happened to someone else before.  I can't call Apple's helpline isn't an option as I bought the iPod new in 2010 and apparently that means I'm not entitled to any help from them. So I need some help here please, but if all you can suggest is to post me back to the page about this in Apple Support please don't bother, I've already been there and the advice given doesn't work. Thanks and I look forward to reading your suggestions.

    Hey chjesc,
I have an article for you that addresses this error code and may be able to provide you with some further information regarding this issue:
    iPod: Can't restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439

  • Cost of replacing 20GB ipod classic with 120GB ipod classic in india

my IPOD classic of 20GB is not functioning and the support center have said that I can go in for a replacement of this device by submission of this one and paying for a 120GB replacement one. Has anyone done the same in India.

Thank you Bka131! I have exactly the same problem (your most common: appears, then disappearing). I already spent DAYS to try, remove iTunes, drivers, re-intall, uninstall any competitor SW that is able to sync music...
Today, I tried with the latest iTunes just issued (12.1.0.71) and still the same issue: my iPod classic appears for 1 sec in iTunes, then disapear...
This is incredible. Do you know if some people ARE able to sync their iPod Classic with iTunes 12.x? Or do Apple wants to kick out all the "old" iPod Classic and force us to buy new iPxx? I can not believe they could not fix such big bug more quickly ...I did not find any official announcement from Apple that this is a known but unsolved bug ... Very strange as this seems to touch many users…
Do you have a safe place where I can download iTunes 11.xxx?

  • HT1345 Is it possible to play a Playlist one has created on an iPod Classic while the iPod is docked?

Is it possible to select and play a Playlist one has created on an iPod Classic through the system on which the iPod is docked?

No, but if you are in the habit of listening to your iPod in Shuffle mode, then set the language files to Skip when shuffling.
To set Skip when shuffling, highlight the track in your iTunes Library and click on File/Get Info/Options>Skip when shuffling and then Sync the iPod to the Library.
Note that if you select a single track, the Skip when shuffling is a tick-box. But if you select multiple items, the Skip when shuffling option becomes a drop-down menu where you choose either Yes or No. Even if that option says Yes, change it to No and back to Yes. This ensuures that all tracks you have highlighted are set to Yes.
Another option is to create a separate Playlist that includes everything except the language files. This will require you to manually add any new songs each and every time you buy new songs.
    Alternatively;
you could even create a Smart Playlist to automatically add all the new music but to exclude the language files. To do that, set the Genre of the language files to "Language" (or similar) and then:
Make sure you are looking at your entire Music Library, not just one part of it or a Playlist.
    Click on File/New Smart Playlist
In the line that appears, change "Artist" to Media Kind (from the drop-down menu)
The next two boxes should now show is and Music. If not, change them so that they do.
Click on the + box at the end of that line (this will add a new line)
Change "Artist" to Genre (from the drop-down menu)
Change "Contains" to is not (from the drop-down menu)
In the last (empty) box, type in Language or whatever genre you have given to the language files. Make sure it is typed in exactly as it is in the files.
    Click OK
Rename the Smart Playlist as you want.
    Sync the iPod with iTunes.
Note that this Smart Playlist will automatically add any new music to it. You do not need to add new songs yourself!

  • Song Capacity of iPod Classic v Nano & iPod Touch

I have a 160 GB seventh generation iPod classic model. I am thinking of purchasing a new iPod Nano which is listed at a 16 GB capacity or an iPod touch listed at a 16 GB capacity. Roughly, how many songs will the new iPod Nano hold or the new iPod touch hold as compared to my existing iPod classic hundred 160 GB seventh generation model?

The number of songs an iPod will hold depends on the size of song files.  If you use have songs with lower-quality "bit rate," their files will be smaller and more will fit in a given amount of space.  If the songs are longer (like with classical music), their files will be larger and fewer will fit.  An iPod touch is an iOS device (like an iPhone), so you are likely to have other "stuff" on it, such as apps; that will reduce the amount of space available for songs.  An iPod nano is a simple media player, so (unless you put videos on it) most of that 16GB will be used for songs.

  • IPod Classic and Nike + iPod Sport Kit

Will an iPod Classic work for the Nike + iPod Sport Kit?
Why does the Nike + iPod Sport Kit only work for iPod Nano and iPod Touch?

Will an iPod Classic work for the Nike + iPod Sport Kit?
    No.
Why does the Nike + iPod Sport Kit only work for iPod Nano and iPod Touch?
Only those iPods contain the firmware needed to use it, likely because iPods with a hard drive such as the iPod classic are much more vulnerable to drops and other hard impacts than iPods which use flash media.
