Using Partitions in OS X ~ Remove Partitions without Formatting!!

Hello,
I have 3 partitions on my iMac G5. I have my Primary OS (10.4.8), and Panther (10.3.9), and a partiton for storing files.
I want to delete the two partitons, and just make the primary partition larger. I tried in Disk Mananger, but it says you cannot modify your startup volume.
I have my startup disks, and can I resize, and delete partitions with those disks? I have to much information to backup, so I just want to delete the other two partitions, so I have one large partition.

You cannot re-partition a hard drive using Disk Utility without losing all the data on the drive. There are several third-party products that claim to be able to re-partition on the fly without data loss, e.g., iPartition, Disk Studio, VolumeWorks, and Drive Genius. You can find these at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com. There is no guarantee that these utilities will work without data loss so you should have backups of your data just in case.

    Here are a couple of other utilities that do dynamic repartitioning: Volume Works and iPartition.
    I have not used either one, but I believe Volume Works has a demo version.
    However, before attempting to use any of these utilities, as with any major procedure, be sure you have a good backup of your HDD.

    If you no longer want to use Windows on your computer, you can use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows partition from your startup disk. This returns the disk to its original configuration as a single-partition Mac OS X volume.
    Warning: Make a backup of the important information on your Windows volume before removing the Windows partition. Windows XP software and all other information on the Windows partition will be erased from your startup disk.
    To remove the Windows partition from your startup disk:
    1. Start up in Mac OS X.
    2. Quit all open applications and log out any other users on your computer.

    I'm using OSX Lion and have an external HD, which is about 40% full. I'd like to add a partition without reformatting it or deleting data if that's possible.
    Anyone know how to do this? I've opened up Disk Utility and clicked on the Partition tab and have tried to use the re-size corner to change the size of the current partition, but it is greyed out and I can't sem to get it to work.
    Any thoughts on how do to this? Right now my drive is one big partition. I'd like to divide it into two partitions, again, without deleting data if I can avoid it.

    Very possible. However, requires that the HD's formatted as OS X Extended, has the GUID partitioning scheme, and has journaling enabled. If those conditions are met, Disk Utility will do it.

  • Can't add a new partition without erasing it all.

    Hi! I have a problem in Disk Utility in which I cannot add a partition because the plus button is greyed out. I can select to make two partition in the drop down but that would probably erase everything.  All I want to do is add one partition to the existing partition without erasing anything so I can dual boot Windows 8.  I can't use boot camp because I can only install Windows 7 since my computer is from 2010.  Thanks in advance!

    I have a clone of my bootcamp that contains Windows 7, but can't restore to the Clone without a Bootcamp partition.
    I am running Lion.
    Is there anyway to create the bootcamp partition without the Windows Install Disk?...if so, I could just restore my Cloned Bootcamp onto the Bootcamp Parition.

    Wait...after I hit send, I realized you had cloned your boot camp parition with winclone.  My bad...well, you can always try putting the cloned partition on the exFAT partition, if possible.  I think what I had to do when I bought a new hard drive was to boot into the old had drive.  I then attached the new drive with a handy universal drive kit (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/).  I think I used iPartition to create an NTFS partition on my new drive. I then copied my cloned Windows partition onto the new drive.

  • Fsck on root partition without live CD

    For some unknown reason, I have to manually repair the root filesystem, but obviously every time I try, fsck tells me that the partition is mounted.
    I know I could use some live CD, or pendrive, but turns out my live CD is VERY scratched, and my BIOS can't boot from a pendrive. Of course I could go and buy another cd, but there must be another way, so here I am.
    Back in the old days, with sysv init, the only thing I had to do was enter the single-user-mode, and do the repair. Now, it is impossible, because "/" is always mounted. I've tried "systemd.unit=rescue.target" from grub, and "mount -o remount,ro /", I also prayed to my computer, but none of these things worked.
    So, is there any way to fsck the root partition without using a pendrive or live cd?

    You may not be able to directly boot from a pendrive, but you can boot to your bootloader.  From the bootloader, it should be possible to start Arch from the pendrive.  I am not at my Arch machine right now, and ssh'ing into it won't let me play in Grub, but I think Grub should be able to handle USB drives out-of-the-box.  If not, I know the correct drivers can be installed to the boot partition.

  • How to create a third partition without messing up Boot Camp partition?

    I have been running a dual-partition Boot Camp setup (with Mac OS 10.5 and Vista) on my Macbook Pro with no hitches for the past year or so. Recently, I have decided that I want to create a third partition to boot into Windows XP. Of course, Boot Camp doesn't let me do this, so I am trying to do it manually by resizing my Mac OS partition and devoting the remaining space to a new partition. However, when I try to resize my Mac OS partition in Disk Utility, it warns me that "Changing the partition map may make this disk unbootable using Windows."
    So I am wondering: is there any way for me to create a new Windows partition without messing up my preexisting Boot Camp setup?

    I found this blog post shortly after the first BootCamp beta was out. I successfully split mine into three partitions per the instructions. However, since Leopard now lets you live partition your disk, you can probably do the partitioning via Disk Utility instead of using diskutil in Terminal.

    You can add a partition without erasing the drive using Disk Utility (Leopard or Snow Leopard), as long as Disk Utility can move data around on existing partition(s) to create a contiguous space for the new partition. Whether Linux can be installed on a drive that uses +GUID partition table+ as the partition map scheme, I do not know.
    However, before doing something like re-partitioning, or installing Linux on the same drive, you need to make a backup of at least your personal data, or even clone the entire Mac startup volume to another drive. It is always possible for something bad to happen.
    I run Ubuntu Linux on my iMac, but I use VWware Fusion. It is seamless and easy. You can use the disk image (.iso) file directly without burning a disc. No separate partition required (and no need to pre-allocate space for its storage), and you can get rid of it with a few clicks of your mouse.

    You can resize partitions without losing data but you won't be able to boot into Windows after that. That was a bad experience I had. My first bad experience was to repartition a dual-partition (Tiger+Windows) drive, ignoring the warning. Guess what? Lost everything and had to reinstall both OS.
    Mac OS X Extended (journalled) drives can be repartitioned without losing data using the "diskutil" command in the Terminal window. Type "diskutil" and you get a list of available commands.

  • How to increase Boot Camp partition without harming both Mac and Windows partition

    I have made a Boot Camp partition with my Mac partition, but the problem is that I am running out of space on my Windows partition. (Darn you, Steam Summer Sale! )
    Anyways, is there any way to increase the space on my Windows partition without harming both Mac and Windows partitions. I would prefer if I didn't need to delete the Windows Partition and do everything all over again, as I need to download and set up everything all over again. I also know that changing the Windows partition is a tricky and hard thing, and one step can harm my whole computer, but I think that it is worth the risk.
    I really don't care how to do it, anything, from a bootable program, to anything. I just want to know how to do it.
    So is there any way that I can increase the Windows partition of my Mac without harming both Mac and Windows partitions? Thanks.

  • How to use partition by instead of group by?

    I am having trouble using partition by clause in following case,
    column other_number with null values contains 10 records in 'some_table'
    5 records with date 11-01-2009, item_code = 1
    5 records with date 10-01-2009, item_code = 2
    This query returns all 10 records, (which suppose to return 2)
    SELECT count (a.anumber) over (partition by TO_char(a.some_date,'MM'), a.item_code) AS i_count, a.item_code,
    TO_char(a.some_date,'MM')
         FROM some_table
         WHERE to_char(a.some_date,'yyyy') = 2009
         AND a.other_number IS NULL
    Works fine if I wrote like this,
    SELECT count (a.anumber) AS i_count, a.item_code,
    TO_char(a.some_date,'MM')
         FROM some_table
         WHERE to_char(a.some_date,'yyyy') = 2009

    Almost all of the aggregate functions (the ones you use in a GROUP BY query) have analytic counterparts.
    You seem to have already discovered that whatever values are returned by
    an aggregate funcition using "GROUP BY x, y, z" can also be found with
    an analytic function using "PARTITION BY x, y. z".
    Aggregate queries collapse the result set.
    The aggregate COUNT function:
    SELECT    deptno
    ,         COUNT (*)   AS cnt
    FROM       scott.emp
    GROUP BY  deptno
    ;tells how many of the 14 employees are in each of the 3 departments.
    So does the analytic COUNT function:
    SELECT    deptno
    ,         COUNT (*) OVER (PARTITION BY deptno)   AS cnt
    FROM       scott.emp
    ;but the first query produces 3 rows of output, the second query produces 14.
    You could get 3 rows of output using the analytic function and SELECT DISTINCT , but it's inefficient.
    Which should you use? Like so many other things, the answer depends on what data you have, and what results you want from that data.
    If you want collapsed results (one row per group), that's a striong indication that you'll want aggregate, not analytic functions.
    If you want one row of output for every row in the table, that's a strong indication that you'll want analytic functions.
    If you have a particular question, ask it. Post some sample data and the results you want from that data, as Rob said.
    There is another important difference between aggreate and analytic functions: analytic functions can easily be restricted to a window , or subset, of the data set. This is something like a WHERE clause, but a WHERE clause applies to the whole query: a wondowing condition applies only to an individual row.
    If you need to compute a SUM of rows with an earlier order_date than this row or an average of the last 5 rows, then you proabably want to use analytic function.

Maybe you are looking for
