Using the ENABLE output of the UMI-7774

I have a motion control system using the NI-7354 4-Axis controller, and the UMI-7774 interface. I am trying to use the ENABLE line for each axis to manually enable and reset the drive for each axis. I am using NI-Motion calls in Visual Basic to do so. I have setup the outputs using the following function call for each axis:
miStatus = flex_config_inhibit_output(b7354MotionCtrlBoardID, AxisNum, DISABLED, NON_INVERTING, NIMC_OPEN_COLLECTOR)
and I toggle the ENABLE lines using the following command:
miStatus = flex_set_inhibit_output_momo(b7354MotionCtrlBoardID, iMustOnMask, iMustOffMask)
I can successfully toggle the DISABLED LED on the UMI-7774 for each channel, but I am unable to see an output difference at pin 6 to control the drive enable line.
Viso has 24Volts connected
Ciso has 24V return connected
The ENABLED dip switches are set to ACTIVE HIGH for each axis
I've tried using Inverting and non-inverting polarity and setting the dip switches to ACTIVE LOW and I am unable to see any difference at pin 6 when I toggle the ENABLED line on and off.
any suggestions?

Hi GregH,
The best way to solve this problem is to first find out, whether the card is faulty or the umi is faulty. The method is as follows.
Take a blank PCB and connect 68 connectors to it. Get a 68 pin connector crimped to a 68 core cable at one end that fits into the PC. The other end of the cable has loose wires. Now assign ferul numbers to each cable from 1 to 68 and connect each of these to the connectors in the PCB. Now check the voltage levels at which ever pins you want. If you see a voltage, then you can replace your UMI and if you dont, then you can replace your card. I've tried this when my ADC on the motion controller was not working and found that the card was faulty. Be careful before trying it. I tried this under the guidance of a motion control expert. If you are not sure then you can send it to NI for checking or contact a field engineer in your location.

    I'm using the UMI-7774 but the system does not work properly. My doubts are:
    * My encoder does not have Channel A- (inv), channel B-(inv) and index- (inv). So I make a circuit to invert the channels A, B and Index with a CI-7404, converting the single-ended output to differential. Does it really works or only differential encoders are avaiable with UMI-7774?
    * I connected the hall sensors A,B and C of the brushless motor at the feedback connector like show the Figure 3.12 of the UMI-7774 user manual. But my third-party drive also need to connect the hall sensors (a fault happend if it does not done). What should I do? Do i have to connect hall sensors at feedback connector and also third-party drive?
    * What does Active low and active high means? When I have to change the LIMIT LED, FAULT and ENABLE to active high?

  • UMI-7774 / PCI 7340 Disable Indicator Error

    I'm using the UMI-7774 and PCI 7340.  All components are connected properly stated internally with MAX, but all AXIS are disabled apon power up.  I can't clear the disable AXIS 1-4. The Inhibit All and Interlock are not illuminated.   I have trited to Initilalize the controller with "Clear Power Up Status.flx" and "Initialize Controller.flx". Yet every try and repower I cannot un disable all 4 AXIS. 
    Does anyone can help this issue, I have hit a wall??

    Thanks for contacting NI.  I've looked into your problem and just wanted to confirm that you are calling the PU Reset.flx the same way that I am.  I rebooted my card so that it is in Power Up Reset state and then ran the attached screenshot and received no errors and the move went ok.
    Are you able to initialize the board in MAX even?  If you are unable to clear the PU Reset status at all, then there may be something else going on, but if you can clear it in MAX and then your program works fine, then this screenshot that I'm attaching to this post should work out for you.  Let me know how it goes.

  • UMI-7774 Axis1 Inhibit input/output (and Fault +/-) to corresponding Servo Drive signals

    Hi,
    I have servo drive (yaskawa sigma fsp) that i configured to work in Position command mode,
    And i want to connect it to UMI-7774 with PCI-7344 also configured in MAX to work in P-Command mode.
    The Servo drive has these signals:
    /S-ON    (Servo ON input)
    ALM+    (Servo alarm output)
    ALM      (Servo alarm output)
    The UMI-7774 on its Control Connector of Axis1 has these signals:
    Enable
    Fault+
    Fault-
    i read the umi7774 manual and also the servo drive manual, and didnt understand all the things because
    the umi7774 manual named the signals Inhibit-input, inhibit-output
    but there is no signals in this name on the UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector.  
    So, i think the wiring i need to make is :
    [Servo Drive] /S-ON   < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Enable 
    [Servo Drive] ALM+   < to >   [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Fault+

    this is the description from the servo drive manual about the following signals:

    i understand the following connection that i write here (for control and feedback)
    from the PCI 7390 users manual (Table B-7 on Page  B-15 : CN1 cable pin assignments)
    the table shows the signals from the MCA-7790Y which is accessory
    for connecting the pci7390 to Yaskawa Sigma 2 drive (which is the same as Yaskawa Sigma FSP drive).

    Dear community,
    This is about Motion control in Labview: I try to control a step motor by using a PXI 7350 controller and UMI 7774 to interface with  third-party driver UDK5114NW2. The problem is 5 Disable LEDS on UMI 7774 board always lit even when I check "enable" on "Motion I/O setting" in configuration of PXI 7350 motion controller. Furthermore, when I start to control step motor, it is not working and I found disable LED on UMI board still lit. I don't know how to solve this problem. Can someone help me to figure out?   • Umi 7774 required for ni drives?

    i am designing a motion control system using 3 stepper motors (ni Nema 23) and correspondingly 3 ni P70360 drives. Is a umi 7774 required to connect these to the 4 axes pci motion controller card?  (i'm confused as its description on the ni site says that it is required for 3rd party drives BUT in the discussions i've read a lot of people have used umi 7774 with ni drives )

    Yes, you will need to purchase and use our Universal Motion Interface (UMI) 7774 board in order to connect the three drives/motors to the motion controller card. 
    It may have been confusing because we do explicitly say that it is required for 3rd party drives, but not necessarily required for our drives. Having said that, the vast majority of customers use the UMI board because it eliminates the need for custom cables, and makes it far easier to connect to more than one axis.

    Mor,
    Ok.  I had to download the manual for your device, but I think I can help you out.
    1.  Do you have the 9 pin D-Sub connector that provides the Auxilary Incremental Encoder, or do you have the 15 pin D-Sub connector for the sinusoidal commutation, or do you have both?  I would recommend the Auxilary Incremental Encoder if possible.  I need to know which one you have in order to help you completely setup your system.
    2.  You need to connect pin 3 of the drive to pin 1 of the Axis 1 Control connector on the UMI.
    3.  You need to connect pin 4 of the drive to pin 9 of the Axis 1 Control connector on the UMI.
    4.  You need to connect pin 4 of the drive to pin 8 of the drive.
    5.  You will need to change the settings on the drive so that it know you are in Torque mode instead of velocity mode (CP.10).
    6.  Depending on what you are going to use for feedback (Auxilary Incremental Encoder/Sinusoidal Commutation) you will need to hook the proper D-Sub connecter to the UMI,  the instructions on how to do this can be found in the 735x user manual, which can be found through the link below...

    NOTE:  I recommend you use the Auxilary Incremental Encoder if possible, it is easier to use and setup.  If you do not have both the Auzilary Incremental Encoder and the Sinusoidal Commutation, then you will need to purchase it for your drive.  Attached is an excerpt from the manual showing what I am talking about.

     What is the current rating of the UMI-7774 internal 5Vdc power supply?  This is the power on pin 8 feedback connector.  User manual doesn't specify rating.  This is not the ISO power.  This relates to page 3-18 of manual.

    I have  NI PCI-7344 and UMI-7774 and i want to
    Connect the UMI-7774 to Yaskawa Sigma II Servo Drive (SGDH) , the servo motor drive is connected to the servo motor with original Yaskawa cables.
    1.  do you know if National instruments provide special cables to connect the UMI-7774 to the Yaskawa Sigma II Servo Drive (SGDH) ?
         i know there is special cable to connect this servo drive to the NI PCI-7390

          i.e.  to run the servo motor from position A to position B (10,000 encoder pulses)

    Hi MotiM,
    We do not have a cable that will let you directly connect the UMI-7774 to a Yaskawa Drive.  We do sell cables that will have the Dsub connector to match the UMI-7774 with pigtails to wire to the drive.  If you take a look at the product page for the UMI-7774 you can see the different cables listed under the accessories.
    To perform a simple move in Measurement and Automation (MAX) is very simple.  In MAX under NI-Motion select your PCI-7344. Under this section select the settings option (by default it will be called Default 7340 settings).  Select the Servo radio button.  Initialize your controller.  Then you can select Interactive and 1-D Interactive and command your motor from there.  I have attached an image with the important areas highlighted for you.

    1)  How do i know if this motor drive is compatible with the pci-7344 and umi7774 ?
         for example:  inside the UMI manual is written that the Motor drive must support "Sinusoidal Commutation"

    i'm enginner in my education, but not in this area (i'm information systems eng.)
    i decided that i need to learn more about it (ni-imaq, ni-motion, line-scan camera, servo, servo drives, encoder signals, motion i/o, umi, pci7344, etc..)
    So, i download the manual and help files that is needed to my application i want to build
    (high speed machine vision of color line-scan camera connected to motion with rtsi synchronization and also digital i/o)
    and now i'm reading ALL this, its huge amount to read, and not all the thing i understand in the begining (english is not my lang..)

  • Umi-7774 power is not working ( request help urgently)

    I have a umi-7774 and a pci-7340 controller, and they were working well, but suddenly when i try to turn on the umi-7774 again, the isolation power led was illuminated but the power led itself didn't illuminate, it only illuminate at the first contact of power supply, so i hope you can help me solve this problem as soon as possible.

    Thank you for your reply, even it is late but anyway thank you, the problem was in my battery that supply power to UMI, since i go to the supplier office here, and the engineer there powers the UMI by a power supply with him, and the umi works properely, but what confuse me that when i measure the voltage out from my battery the voltage was 24V, and the current also was high, so i donnot know what is the problen with my battery

  • Do I need to enable something in MAX to turn on Iso Power for the outputs of a UMI?

    I've been trying to set up a UMI-7772 to control some servo drives. I have V, C, Viso and Ciso inputs connected to a 24V power supply. When turned on, both the V and Viso lights turn on green. However, I cannot measure any voltage difference between the Iso Power and Iso Common pins on the Dsub outputs. Is there something in MAX I need to enable to get the UMI to turn on?

    Hi Mike,
    there is no switching circuitry on the UMI, that could disable the Iso Power outputs and there is nothing you need to configure in MAX. If you can't measure a voltage between Iso Power and Iso Common pins on the Dsub outputs, the UMI might be defective (e. g. blown fuse). Please contact your local NI branch for repair options.

  • Why is the A/D channel of my UMI-7774 noisy?

    I am using a UMI-7774 mated to a PXI-7350 motion controller in a PXI-1002 chassis. I am testing A/D Read to the UMI with a short jumper between AI signal and AI ground pins on the Analog Input port. The result of A/D Read of this short-circuit is a DC bias offset of approximately 50 and spikes of 50-200 (see attached). I would like to know:
    1) What is the unit of the A/D Read? For a channel I specified as +5V/-5V, I get readings of +30000/-30000 for inputs of +4V/-4V.
    2) What is the source of DC bias and noise in the channel, and what are some techniques for compensation? Remember, I have jumped out this channel just to look at the noise in the UMI/controller. The only controls I see on this channel are en
    able/disable and a choice of fixed ranges.
    I want to use the A/D Read function to read a conditioned LVDT signal, then use the value to command a servomotor, but now the signal is too noisy. I would like to avoid extensive averaging, as this is a real-time application (and the spikes have too great an effect even on the average). The LVDT signal after conditioning (3rd-party hardware) appears clean in comparison.

    The A/D outputs the 'bit level of the A/D converter,' or what we would call raw data. The A/D is a 16 bit converter, so it has a range of 32767 to -32768. Depending on what voltage range you have selected, these values correspond to different voltages. For example => +5V corresponds to 32767, and -5V corresponds to -32768.
    What is the source of DC bias and noise in the channel, and what are some techniques for compensation? Remember, I have jumped out this channel just to look at the noise in the UMI/controller. The only controls I see on this channel are enable/disable and a choice of fixed ranges.

    ion controller A/Ds are not specifically designed for Data Acquisition, so they can have some behavior like this. The source of the noise is likely just system noise, etc., as the ground plane is shared among other signals. The best that you will be able to do is to do some DC offset calibration in software, and to over-sample and average your readings to reduce the noise.
