Using Time Capsule Without Network Connection

In my room I have a USB printer connected to my Time Capsule. Without configuring the time capsule to connect to my home's wireless network I'd like to:
- Back up to my time capsule wirelessly using Time Machine
- Be able to print wirelessly
Is this possible? If so, how?

No it isn't possible.
Edit.. LOL!! my answer is opposite to BOB.. I assume you want internet at the same time. He is assuming you will swap from using internet to only using the TC in local network and hence removing all internet connections. So my answer is based on how to get them working at the same time.
What you want is two separate wireless networks.. with no links. And to use both networks simultaneously on only one wireless client card. No can do!!
What is possible.
You have to connect the TC to the main wireless router. I strongly recommend this be done by ethenet or an ethernet replacement technology like Ethernet over Power EOP .. the adapters are now cheap and fast enough for wireless link. You will turn off wireless in the TC although you can also set it up with identical ssid and security on a different channel.. then you have one flat network and all devices can roam.
Alternatively..
You need two wireless clients in the laptop/computer you use.
You can buy a usb stick compatible with the OS used.. os x although you nowhere state the type of system. USB stick wireless are cheap and plenty are available that will work fine with Mac OS drivers.
On the USB stick, setup manual network with different IP subnet to the main router, and no gateway or dns. This will allow you to communicate to two different subnets at the same time. (On OS X it does not strictly need such care with gateway and dns as you can control the order of devices better than on a pc.. just the same I would do it manually)
Of course you could also just plug in ethernet and do the same thing.
As per Bob definitely do the backup numero uno by ethenet.. it will take ages by wireless and the chance of a corrupted backup is so so much greater in which case it will just start again.

Ok .. this is pretty easy.
You plug the WAN port on TC into the N900 LAN port by ethernet.
Open the airport utility on the Mac.
Simply allow it to automatically setup and it should select bridge mode.. if not just jump in at the end .. click on the edit under the summary and go to the network tab and select bridge.
Then go to the wireless tab and make sure you are creating a wireless name.. you can give it the same name as the N900 same security same password.. this is called roaming network.
Or use a different name.. use short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
I have given a different name to 5ghz.
It will not matter which wireless you connect to but the TC is faster on the 5ghz for backups.

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

I've searched everywhere for a definitive answer to my question, but haven't been able to find it. Can anyone help me with this?
I've got a new MacBook, and a now-full 320GB external HDD full of movies and music. However, I'm working overseas and don't want to commit to an internet subscription at home. The question I'd like to ask is hopefully quite simple:
Can I use a Time Capsule as an external HDD to store my iTunes library (no backing-up at all), wirelessly, without an internet subscription?
I don't want to have to plug my MacBook into anything, but I still want to access my movies etc. Is this possible?
Furthermore, I'm thinking of getting an Apple TV further down the line, and hooking it into my Time Capsule-based network. Can I then stream my iTunes library to my Apple TV, with or without my MacBook turned on?

Yes.
When you set up the Time Capsule, you will create a wireless network, choose security settings, etc., but will skip the internet set up portion. You will get 2-3 error messages stating that you will not be connected to the internet once the Time Capsule is updated with your settings, but you can just ignore them.

Restoring to defaults might be the best way to go. This will not affect your backups.
To do this, simply hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly. Keep holding another 4-5 seconds when you see this and then release.
If you have a spare ethernet cable handy, I would recommend that you connect it from the Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Continue to follow the guided setup. When you are asked how you want to configure the Time Capsule, choose the "Create a wireless network option"
Keep following the guide until you Update. You'll see a message that you do not have an ethernet connection at the WAN Port and also that you do not have an Internet connection. Click "ignore" to both of these messages and you get a greeen light when the Time Capsule restarts.
Then, set up Time Machine again.
Click System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Time Machine
Click Select Disk
Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backups
That should get backups going again and also allow you to access your backups by clicking the Time Machine icon on the dock.
You can keep the computer connected using the ethernet cable, or use the wireless on your computer to connect to the wireless network that the Time Capsule is providing.

TS1253 Print via Time Capsule without being connected to my router

My router and my printer are in two different places.
It all prints well when the TC (Time Capsule) is connected via Ethernet cable to my router and printer connected via USB to TC
Can I use Time Capsule to print even if it is not connected to the router via Ethernet cable?
My TC is connected via USB to the printer but TC is not connected to the router because the TC and the router are not in the same place. Why can't I print via wi-fi?

If I want a fast backup I use the Ethernet cable.
The Ethernet ports are not enabled when you configure the Time Capsule to "join" the network using wireless only. You can only backup using wireless, whether you have Ethernet connected or not. Apparently, the "support" folks did not tell you about this.
I just do not see why this setup would take longer.
You are kidding, correct?
Gigabit Ethernet is 1,000 Mbps.
With a fantastic wireless connection, you might get 200-250 Mbps. Most users see about 100-130 Mbps.
As for why your Time Capsule setup will take twice as long as normal wireless .....
Backups have to make a wireless "double hop". Hop one is from your Mac to the wireless router. Hop two is from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule. Two hops = double the time.
Since you can only use wireless, your actual backup speed will be in the range of 100-125 Mbps, maximum. When you try your first backup on a Mac, it will likely take days, not a few hours as it should.
Since you have another hard drive attached to the Time Capsule, any copies of transfers to this drive will be exceedingly slow as well.
Unfortunately, the support folks did you no favors by providing the steps to this type of installation.
At least, they could have told you about the downsides.....which can all be avoided by connecting your Time Capsule to your modem/router using an Ethernet cable as the Setup Guide recommends.
thought that another reason to have and use a TC is to be able to use USB peripherals connected to the TC in wi-fi, like printers. This was the center of my question to start with.
Easy to do if the Time Capsule is connected to your modem/router using an Ethernet cable.

Can you use time capsule without leopard?

I just wanted to know if time capsule can be used to back up etc without adding leopard?
I'm using the last Tiger update and am reluctant to buy leopard osx if i don't have to as i like tiger.

im running Tiger and i want to purchase Time Capsule. i dont really care about using Time Machine or not, and dont want to update to Leopard at the moment. from what i've read here, i can still use Time Capsule, but does this mean the only way i can back-up is wirelessly? or does Time Capsule have a hard line option to connect my MacBook directly to it using a cable?

Use of Time Capsule in network connected office?

I have a time capsule that I love at home. I would also like to set up another one in my office at work. Our desktops are connected into a company wide wired network which is how we access the internet. Is it possible to just intercept the network cable and plug it into the back of the time capsule and then come back out of it to my desktop to create a wireless network in my office? I will keep the software at my computer.
If not maybe I should talk to my IT guy to see if he will allow me to install it ahead of the cable/dsl modem if we have one?

This is exactly what I do. We have both wired and wireless. I plugged the ethernet cable into the WAN port of the TC, set the TC to "bridge" and I have a wireless network in my office.
For what it's worth, I also have a USB hard drive plugged into the USB port AND a Brother 2170W laser printer wirelessly connected to the TC as well. On top of that, I also have a wireless net camera for security and it connects via the TC also.
So the answer is absolutely, it works and in my case, once I got this rather complicated array of deviced coordinated, it has worked transparently. I backed up my 95GB of data on my MBP overnight (took about 7 hours I think) and since then it has been simple and convenient.

Wireless Time Capsule without Internet Connection?

Hi, I just bought a new 1TB time capsule the other day. So far I've been trying to figure out if it is possible to /just/ use it as a wireless backup, not a router.
To explain my setup:
I've got a Netgear Modem slash Wireless Router upstairs which provides the entire house with an internet connection - it supports WEP 64 and 128 bit, WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) and WPA-802.1x encryption. My MacBook connects to this network to connect to the internet.
When I bought the Time Capsule I thought I could just use it as a wireless drive that I could find on my network that would do regular backups without having to be plugged in... but after reading through the manual I'm pretty sure I have to get it to join my network for this to be possible (can someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
So, Time Capsule apparently only supports 40 and 128 bit WEP, and some other encryptions, I know the 128bit WEP overlaps (but I'm not sure whether the Time Capsule supports the other two encryption methods on my router). And I'd rather not switch to 128bit encryption (I am using 64) as it requires a 26-character passkey which will probably be too much for the others using the network to remember, and far too much of a hassle to enter on an iPhone or iPod touch.
Hopefully I've provided enough information - if you need any more please ask.

Sure you can do that. You need to configure the Time Capsule to join your existing wireless network. That's it.
The Time Capsule supports WEP, WPA, and WPA2 wireless encryption. Those are all the standard wireless encryption options.
You are using 64 bit WEP? That is extremely weak and easily compromised.
And I'd rather not switch to 128bit encryption (I am using 64) as it requires a 26-character passkey which will probably be too much for the others using the network to remember, and far too much of a hassle to enter on an iPhone or iPod touch.
Most devices (including all Macs, iPhones, and iPod touches) will remember the password after you enter it the first time. Then the device will automatically connect next time that it connects to that network.

Yes. Configure the Time Capsule to join your existing wireless network. Then configure Time Machine on each Mac to use the Time Capsule as the destination for the Time Machine backup.

Using Time Capsule without it being a router

I Have a Time Capsule connected to my Mac Mini (OS X 10.8.3) by ethernet cable, but not connected to my cable modem. I have an existing wireless network and wish to continue using that. I have the Time Capsule working okay for auto back-ups but every time I restart or wake the Mac I get set up screens that want to configure the Time Capsule as a router. How do I stop those? Or can the Time Capsule connect wirelessly to my other network as a hard drive device and not be a router itself?

Do not use the TC by wireless to your other network, unless it happens to also use an apple router.. I am guessing not.
That will reduce your backup speed to a crawl. It will also load up wireless network unnecessarily.
In fact your network layout is not making any real use of the TC at all.. an external hard disk plugged into USB port of the mini would be faster, more relaible and better. The TC can perhaps be used in different way.
Anyway to setup the TC correctly for dual network.

Using time capsule without wireless

We are living in military housing in Naples, Italy and must use the router/modem provided to us for wireless. I bought the Time Capsule before leaving the states and was using it as a router but had not completed the first back up. I would like to now back up my computer onto the Time Capsule, but I need to do it without accessing the wireless capabilities and can't figure it out! Can anyone help me figure out how to do this? Not with any Verizon or FIOS products....( or any other manufacturers' products).... that I have ever used. Unfortunately, Apple uses proprietary "extend" settings for their products, which are designed to only work with other Apple routers. There may be a compatible device out there somewhere, but we have yet to find it in 5+ years of looking.
OR would I better returning the TC and putting the money towards something like a Netgear WiFi Booster or Extender and then getting a cheaper drive for backups?
Netgear claims to have some "universal" extenders, but the ones that I tested were not "universal" enough to work with Apple routers, so it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.
Does the TC need to be attached with Ethernet or not?
Yes, in my opinion. In some rare cases it might be possible to connect the TC using wireless, but it will not "extend" or provide any more wireless coverage when it is setup this way. And backups will take FOREVER because the wireless signal must make a double hop to get to the TC. Definitely not recommended.
I would like to keep my setup as simple as possible.
Trying to connect the TC using wireless would not meet that goal.
As far as the old AirPort, I doubt that it would be worth the effort....my opinion.

The Time Capsule can do what you want if it connects to a wireless signal produced by another Apple wireless router, but it would not be comatible with a 3rd party wireless router.
You might want to get with your ISP and ask them if they have another router available with industry standard things....like an Ethernet port.

Using Time Capsule as Network Backup only no wireless

I already have a wireless network, but I have a couple of C level users who "forget" to store documents on the server and then proceed to throw them away, and I have a 1TB time capsule, that I was using for testing, but that project is now over and it is available. I was hoping to put the TC on the network, but not use wireless with it and simply share it as an additional backup device.
I believe that I need to turn off the Wireless, assign a IP address on my subnet, then everything should be fine? Right?

Hi, I am also having issues with Time Capsule in a pure LAN mode. When I setup Time Capsule with a fixed LAN IP, switch off the wireless mode, Time Capsule accepts the settings but as soon as it is hooked up to the LAN and reboots, it kicks away its settings, gives an error message and switches back "on" its wireless mode.
Ok, I understand that it switches back its wireless mode, to be able to talk to the MAC, but... why is it not taking the fixed LAN IP? It is a regular 192.168.0.x address that is free on the network, I am not sure what to do...
Before that I tried to install it as a client on the existing wireless network, provided by a Zyxel Wireles/LAN Firewall/Switch, that worked for about 2 hours, since then Time Capsule has never again accepted to enter the wireless network.
I am stuck here... the Time Capsule is new, belongs to a friend of mine who has exactly the same 24'' I-MAC as I have (except for a different brand hard drive), he is not computer savy, so this is why I am trying to help him out here.
He needs the Time Capsule to be on the LAN only, as he also has a Vista Notebook and as he mainly runs his MAC in Vista, as he needs some software which does not exist for OS X.
Anyone, any idea, how to force Time Capsule into the LAN mode, without its wireless... or is there a way to clear all old configuration settings... because, every time I try to clear the old settings, the Time Capsule does its very best to recover these...
Any suggestions welcome...
Otherwise, my guess is that this Time Capsule is faulty and that my friend needs to send it in for replacement.

Airport time capsule losing network connection

Running a time capsule with airport utility v. 6.3.2 and it is losing wi-fi and ethernet connection daily. I have had the unit for three years or so, and while it used to happen once or twice a year, its happening daily now. Unplugging/replugging gets it going every time. I have three Macs and 5 iphones connected.

It may be possible that your Time Capsule is failing. However, before considering replacing it, I would suggest that you contact your ISP and have them run a "line check" between their service and the Internet modem. Even if this check proves good have them replace the modem, especially if it is more than two years old.
If after all this, you still have the issue with the Time Capsule, I would recommend that you take it to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.
