Using VNC on Panther G3 iBook to reach G4 Tiger eMac

Is there anything missing or not configured right here that prevents the iBook from accessing the eMac? (On my iBook's Tiger partition, JollyFastVNC connects my eMac just perfect)
Thanks for any assist!

It may sound odd, but try updating the Apple Remote Desktop Client on Panther. The VNC support the system uses seems to be tied to that, and that is something Software Update does not normally appear to update. I know I had to update the client to use Screen Sharing from Leopard to control Panther, and using Chicken of the VNC on the Panther machine I can control Leopard, or Tiger with CotVNC.
The latest version of Apple Remote Desktop Client that supports Panther that I'm aware of is 3.2.2:

  • Used copy of Panther?

Is it possible to use a already used copy of Panther to install on a mac that is missing a OS?

I'm not sure how universal the four disc Panther CD retail installer set is,
but I do still own one, and found it was an older version of Panther than
the one my iMac G4 17" 1.25GHz computer shipped with on DVD media.
The first iMac G5s shipped with Mac OS X 10.3.5 (7P35)
and their processors were under 2.0GHz.
The software installer set included with a 2.0GHz
G5 iMac is this number: Mac OS X 10.4 (8A428)
+If the OP's suggested auction purchase is the+
    +Ambient Light Sensor model 17"/20" iMac G5.+
These early model groups each require a different
Apple Hardware Test on computer-series specific
discs in order to check their hardware status, also.
So, if the fairly sound logic of past system configurations still flows down-
hill, the practice of an older OS X installer not working in a newer Mac
would still hold. And I have read elsewhere of this holding firm; although
there may be a few models or builds that could use a four-CD set 10.3
older than their shipped hardware configuration or software packet...
Just like there are stories of people using an eMac G4 installer CD set to
put Panther 10.3 on an iBook white G3. (I've done that. Installer boots it.)
{If the installer can boot the computer, and the test should still include
a hard disk drive reformatted by the disk utility on the boot disc as
    well as further setup using the intended installer as far as it may go.}
So, if someone can randomly buy some questionable computer at auction
while not knowing if it boots into an OS or has a hard drive inside; and get
a CD installer 10.3.x retail set from another source, and make a whole
working computer out of the deal, that would be a fine result of a gamble.
{It could happen. Since I live near the north pole, I still am on the lookout
for a Santa, too; but just don't expect much to happen as a result. Not to
discourage another's optimism, a computer not guaranteed to work as
    one is a stretch in the first place. The seller is not saying it computes.}
Pardon me while I set up a trailside game camera to get early glimpses
of the easter bunny as the bunny families gather together easter fixin's.
I'm gonna catch me some real images; none of that photoshop for me!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Installing Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger

Anyone help? I want to install Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger installed. I've used my iMac Panther disks to install, but although the iBook goes all through the installation process, it won't start up from Panther.

    Lyssa
Thanks for your reply. I suspected this might be the case but still hope there might be a way round it.
I want Panther on the iBook first because I prefer it to Tiger. Tiger has some annoying little features - for example, the fact that if you select a whole load of files and Get Info on them you get a separate window for each file - if you want to hide the extensions you have to tick the box in each separate window. In Panther you get a single window applying to all the files - neat! There are various other silly little things like this.
Second, the versions of Mail in Panther and Tiger are incompatible. If I save an email on the iBook (while away from home, for example) and want to transfer it to one of the mailboxes on my (Panther) iMac, I have to go through the following laborious process:
    1. Save the email on the iBook in Raw Message format. Copy it to the iMac (via a mobile hard drive).
    2. Create a temporary mailbox folder in Mail on the iMac. Close Mail.
    3. Go to Users ... Library/Mail/Mailboxes. Change the extension of the temporary folder from mbox to txt.
    4. Open it (it now opens as an ordinary folder).
    5. Copy the text of the email into the document called mbox.
    6. Close the folder, change its extension back to mbox.
    7. Open Mail again, move the email from the temporary folder into the folder where it belongs.
    8. Delete the temporary folder.
    Ridiculous or what?

  • I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade but I have a new Apple ID, how can I make certain I don't lose any data in my iBooks?

I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade iBook but it is "stuck" on my old ID, yet I already created a new ID but it won't let me update the App.  I have everything backed up on my MacBook so if I delete iBooks on my iPad and retrieve the App under my new ID and then sync with my MacBook, will I still have all of the books, etc.?

Your purchases are tied to your Apple ID. If you bought all of the books with the old ID then AFAIK you will have to continue to use that ID in order to continue to sync those books to the iPad.
You have to update the app with the old ID so I don't see how you could keep the books with the new ID. Maybe I am wrong about this, but someone else will chime in I'm sure and correct me if I am wrong.

  • How to use VNC with AirPort?

    Hi,
I used to have an old iMac G3 DV at home, and I always used VNC to access it from my work computer. No problem.
Now, I recently bought a brand new MacBook and a brand new AirPort Extreme base station, and I can't connect using VNC anymore. I tried every single configuration I could, using the AirPort Utility, but it was no use.
I am not really an expert though, as this is my first time using wireless. So, please, anybody there, with greater experience about configuring AirPort for it to allow VNC connection, if you could please help me solve this problem, I would really appreciate it!
I've been told that I should make the gateway IP redirect all VNC requests to my MacBook, but I have no idea of how to do that.
I'm using Vine Server 2.1 at home (former OSXvnc) and VNC Dimension 0.7.1 at work, as the client. My MacBook is the only computer connected wirelessly to that AirPort station back home. At work, I use an older iMac G3 Indigo, with 384 MB RAM and Mac OS X (10.1.5).
Any ideas? I'm sure it should be easy to do...
    MacBook 13" 1.83 GHz 512 MB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.9) AirPort Extreme 802.11n

    Hello Duane!
Thanks for the quick response, and thanks for the PDF document you provided.
I remember I tried out a lot of different configurations using port mapping under NAT, and none of them worked. But I believe the problem was precisely that my local IP address for my MacBook was not static, it was always changing between that range 10.0.1.201-10.0.1.255.
So I will try setting up a static IP address and see if it works. Now, how do I do that? I can just go to somewhere in AirPort Utility and type in an address outside the default range (let's say, 10.0.1.300) and it will remain static? Where is the place I can change that?
Sorry if I sound too much of a newbie, hehe! And thanks again for your help.

  • How to connect to a guest-VM using VNC/tightVNC

I have a guest-VM installed in OVM Server. OVM Server is running on top of VirtualBox. From the HOST-OS, I can ping to the guest-VM. I attempted vncviewer into the guest-VM, however no luck. I did 192.168.1.51:5900
However, I can launch through the console via OVMM and can see the guest-VM.
I have turn off firewall in guest-VM (linux). I was able to use vncviewer the day before.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Dude.... The VM console feature using VNC is proxied through the VM Manager. The VNC viewer connects through the VM Manager. You can't connect directly to the VM guest using VNC... unless.... You have VNC Server installed on that guest. Even then, it might not be running on 5900 unless you're running a windows VM guest. In which case, 5900 is the default port. On many linux distributions, you have define the port in the setup and no one I know runs VNC on port 5900 in Linux. If its a Linux guest with rpm based packaging do a
    rpm -qa | grep vnc
This will tell if the package is at least installed.

  • HT5067 When using a Keynote Widget with iBooks Author, do the transitions and builds between Keynote slides appear in the iPad preview version of the iBook, or only in the finished product?

I'm using the Keynote Widget in iBooks Author, and the Keynote presentation uses the Magic move transition between slides.  When I preview the iBook on a new iPad, the Magic move transitions don't show up (i.e. the transition from slide to slide is standard, not Magic move).  Any suggestions?

Hyperlinks and magic move should work but don't. However I  found the following as a workaround for me. Use three slides instead of two to generate the magic move effect in Keynote presentations on Ibooks using hyperlinks only. As an example
Supose an object on  slide 1 was set as a hyperlink to go to a slide which then had a magic move effect to a third slide. For some reason it works on the mac, but not on ibooks. However you can create the magic move transition effect by simply adding a "dummy slide" as follows.  Suppose an object on slide 1 had an object which would hyperlink to slide 4. Duplicate Slide 4, and make the duplicate slide 5. Then set Slide 4  to automatically transition (with no effect) to the next slide (i.e. slide 5) after .5 seconds. Have Slide 5 set to transition to Slide 6 using magic move automatically after .5 seconds. By having the hyperlink point to slide 4 the magic move effect from Slide 5 to Slide 6 works fine (with a brief 1 sec delay). IF the hyperlink pointed directly to Slide 5, the magic move transition to slide 6 would not work.
For some reason having an extra slide makes magic move work even though it is not needed on the mac. I hpe this helps.

  • How to use VNC for Solaris 10

Hello, I am completely green when it comes to Unix / Solaris. I am trying to use VNC from the Solaris 10 Companion DVD. I have it installed. I followed the easy to use steps from this site : http://www.salixtraining.co.uk/index_files/vncsol10.htm
But the problem is I don't know how to use it now that I have it installed.
What I am tring to do is install an e-ticketing software program on my test Solaris server and I am stuck on getting PHP to work correctly and I am trying get the company, whose product I am trying to use, to connect to my server to investigate. I want them to be able to remote connect to and be able to see and access the server to see if they can help.
Can anyone help? I really need step by step instructions. Assume that I don't know anything!
    Thanks in advance,
    Aaron

Hello, here are the instructions I follow to install VNC on my systems running Solaris Express, you may use this to your own install, I dont use the one included on the companion CD, I download the one from RealVNC instead, I hope this helps:
    VNC
INSTALL VNC (RealVNC) 4.1.2 - Solaris Express 11 b71 Sparc
    a)
    File to use: vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.tar.gz
    #gunzip vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.tar.gz
    #tar xvf vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.tar
    #cd vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris
    b)
    Install it by running:
    # ./vncinstall /usr/bin /usr/share/man
Note: this will also install man pages into /usr/share/man/man1
If you want to use the Java VNC viewer (Open browser and type pc_name:display#):
Copy the files from the java directory to some suitable installation directory
such as /usr/local/vnc/classes (vncserver will read this path!- dont change it):
    # mkdir -p /usr/local/vnc/classes
    # cp java/* /usr/local/vnc/classes
    c)
Add these 2 lines to .profile (under the user)- (This will make it to connect always with screen 1):
    vncserver -kill :1
vncserver -depth 24 -geometry 1024x768 (or any other combination you want like 1280x1024,etc)
note: dont use it if you want to have a different screen to connect everytime.
    d)
Create a /.vnc directory first, we will create the xstartup file inside:
    file /.vnc/xstartup:
    #!/bin/sh
    # xrdb $HOME/.Xresources      < This line Not really needed!! >
    xsetroot -solid grey
gnome-session          <add selection for KDE or CDE if needed see bellow notes>
** Here is How to Create the xstartup file:
    echo "#!/bin/sh
    xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    xsetroot -solid grey
#/usr/dt/bin/dtsession CDE < CDE, gnome or sessions: >
    #gnome-session Gnome < comment with '#' the one you don't >
    < want to use. >
    " > xstartup
    # chmod 744 xstartup To make it executable!.
*** Sample used for the user: (use the same file for the other users) it will be created
the first time using it, just change it/add to the following sample:
First time to login will ask to create a password or
Run /export/home/name/.vnc/passwd (to add password to login)
You may need to change ownership on the following 3 if you create them under different user:
    /.vnc folder
    /.vnc/xstartup
    /.vnc/passwd
using #chown -name- .vnc (xstartup and passwd)
To check process for VNC running:
    # ps -ef | grep Xvnc
    To stop the process:
    # kill pid# (stop it hard way)
    kill display:
    #vncserver -kill :#
to connect from another system just type the hostIP:screen#, e.g. 192.168.1.20:1

Ok so I happened to figure it out while on the phone to apple support. Even though the guy was very nice, I think I knew more than him! He was explaining very basic resolution principles I played about. I had the second option in displays resolution. All I did was unplug the HDMI cable, click on 'best for display' then plugged the HDMI in and my resolution on the normal monitor changed to the normal blue, then went black momentarily and then changed to a strange resolution but another window appeared that said SONY BRAVIA HDMI at the top! Hey presto! Don't know why it didn't do it yesterday - I probably left the HDMI cable in or something! Oh well. Problem solved!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Are you posting with it here?
How long has it been since you did any hard drive maintenance?
After six years of use, the hard drive may be so full that it is hampering performance.
    From http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html  :
Determine the available space on your Mac OS X startup disk
In Finder®, select the startup disk icon. For most users, this is Macintosh HD.
    Press the Command-I keyboard shortcut.
The Info window for your startup disk opens. In the General pane, the Capacity, Available (free space), and space Used on your startup disk is displayed, as seen in the following screen shot:
As a general rule of thumb: if the Available space on the Mac OS X startup disk is less than 10 GB, it is time to free some disk space. We suggest 10 GB as an absolute minimum as this is generally the amount of free space required to reinstall Mac OS X 10.5 and earlier via an Archive and Install and still preserve space for VM swap files. More free space is better. For example, users of FileVault may want to retain more free space than that occupied by their encrypted Home folder: disabling FileVault requires free space somewhat greater than the size of your encrypted Home folder.
Even though Mac OS X 10.4 doesn't take as much space as Mac OS X 10.5, you still need to keep quite a bit of free space on your hard drive. A too-full hard drive is a common cause of system slowdowns.
If you find that you do have enough disk space, post back and we will explore other potential problems.

  • Resolutions when using VNC

I wasn't sure which category to put this question in as it's quite generic but here goes.
I want to connect to another Mac, probably an iMac, via VNC (or similar remote desktop connection). I want to view the iMac at a higher resolution than the iMac's native resolution. The higher resolution IS one that the iMac is capable of displaying if an external display is connected. So is it possible to do something like this over VNC? Or do I need to fool the iMac into thinking an external display is connected? Thanks for any info.

I realise that the higher the resolution, the slower the connection. However, I'm just wondering if it's technically possible to set an iMac's resolution to a higher resolution than its native display using VNC. It's more to take screenshots and that sort of thing, it wouldn't be used as a work environment as such.
I want to use resolutions that an external monitor could use (in other words, the graphics card CAN display them if there's an external monitor attached but the native display can't)

  • HT201209 Can I use iTunes gift cards for iBooks?

Can I use iTunes gift cards for iBooks?  How?

Yes, I've used them to buy from the ibookstore, app store, iTunes and the Mac App Store. They can be used in the ibookstore in the iBooks app (or via your computer's iTunes) in the same way as you use your account's balance to buy music or apps - so you first need to redeem a gift card so that it gets added to your account, and you can then buy things from the stores with it.

  • HT204081 Can i use itunes giftcards to purchase ibooks?  If so, how?

Can i use itunes giftcards to purchase ibooks?  If so, how?

    Hi Mystere,
Click on the iBooks app, select Store, and then either search for the book you want or browse the store. You should be able to then purchase a book, and your iTunes credit should be applied first (like any iTunes purchase that has a gift card credit).
