Using Xbox Mad Catz Drum kit as drum controller for Garageband - Help!

Trying to get Snow leopard to recognise the mad catz portable drum kit - once it is recognised as a midi file i can then use it to play garageband drums!
Read online of a 2 stage solution to use a mapping programme and keyboard typing, the problem is i can't get the mac to recognise the USB controller.
In Sysprefs/usb it gives the name and id, but the '360 controller' converter is installed but nothing shows up in the available controller field, probably because the plist file (system/library/extensions)doesn't include it.
So i tried duplicating a device entry in the list with the right name and id - but still nada.
The controller lights for a second on plugging in and then nothing.
In "about this mac/usb" it says
+Mad Catz Portable Drum Kit:+
+Product ID: 0x9871+
+Vendor ID: 0x0738+
+Version: 4.10+
+Serial Number: 0B97EB42+
+Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec+
+Manufacturer: Mad Catz, Inc.+
+Location ID: 0xfd313000+
+Current Available (mA): 100+
+Current Required (mA): Unknown (Device has not been configured)+
So i tried adding the following to the plist:

Any ideas?
I want to be able to play drums with this thing by various midi mapping, but am stuck. Any ideas?
(yes i know i could buy a set of midi drums for £200, but aren't you tempted by a £10 solution that stacks away in a little box?)

Have you found a solution to this?
It would be awesome to link my madcatz portable drum to my mac!

  • Using Yamaha DTX500 as drum controller in Logic - Please Help

    A super-newbie question,
I'm using Logic 9 express, and I want to use my Yamaha DTX520k electric drum kit as a midi drum controller so that ideally, I could play it and record 8 separate drum tracks in Logic (one for each drum pad). This way I could play with each individual track later.
I've got a Roland midi to usb UM-One to link the drums into Logic, and I've set that up in Audio Midi Setup, so it is showing up in Logic when I create a new External Midi track.
By from there I am stumped. I play the drums but Logic is not picking it up, and I have no idea how to create a map to ensure that the bass drum track will make a bass drum sound in Logic.
If anyone has any simple ideas on how to accomplish the above, I would be eternally grateful.
I have never worked with midi before.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    Hi
    Some things to consider:
    a) MIDI from your kit could be routed to an Instrument track in Logic with a drumkit loaded (EXS24/Ultrabeat etc). You may run into isses of note-mapping between the kit and the (generally GM standard) sound mapping in EXS/UB. Either change the transmitted notes in the kit, or you'll need to do a re-map in Logic.. see item c).
    b) If you want to use the kit 'built-in' sounds, you'll need to connect up the audio outs to your audio interface. You may wish to record MIDI and re-send out to the 'brain' via an External MIDI track (but you will still need the audio connections in order to hear the kit in Logic). Make an audio track set to the correct inputs, and turn on Input Monitoring.
    c) If you need to re-map MIDI notes (Kick=kick etc), it will be quicker and easier to change them at the kit side, rather than in Logic (consult it's manual), but it is possible using a Mapped Instrument Environment object.

  • Can I sort a column based upon a "find" word?  i.e. I want to group all the rows that contain a certain word.  I'm using Numbers '09 on a Macbook Pro.  Thanks for your help!

A second question: I am creating a database of products for my point of sale system.  I am using a product list sent to me by a vendor.  Can I pull out certain words in their description and add them to a new column.  i.e. The vendors' description in one cell is "Blueridge Guitar Dreadnought."  Can I automatically add the word "Dreadnought" to a new column in the same row?

You can extract the word case where the string contains case using
    =IFERROR(IF(FIND("CASE",B)>0,"CASE",""),"")
But that doesn't solve the issue of what goes in that column for lines where the product ins not a case.
Looking at the other columns, I don't see a means of getting "Hardshell" from the given data using a formula.
A semi-manual method using the "Show rows... feature of the Reorganize panel might prove efficient.
Here, the Show rows... displayd was applied, then CASE was entered in the first cell in column A and filled down to the last visible cell. As can be seen below, the fill operation placed "CASE" in only the rows where column B containsed "CASE".

  • Using Zoom R16 as Controller for Garageband not good so far, Help!!!

I can only record one channel, meaning I just have one earphone or speaker working where I should hear both, even in mono. The phones and speakers work fine. I have checked the pan on the R16. I read a similar problem in another post and the answer was set the track to record mono. How do you do that? I can't find any thing like that. Can anyone help me out?

  • Use Logitech's (PS3 style) Controller for mouse functions

I would like to use Logitech's (PS3 style) Dual Action Gamepad Controller for general mouse functions. Any ideas how to go about doing this?

There is a program that I found that is availible for free called DarkwiinRemote. Wii Remotes use Bluetooth and IR to connect to a Wii and newer Macs have both of those ports. It is kind of a pointless function but it's fun to control your Remote from your Mac and vise versa.

  • Best drum loops for use with Logic? Ease of use, usability, etc.

    Hi,
I have BFD2 but find it slow to load and sometimes clumsy auditioning loops within Logic. I love the Apple Loops library but I wondered if people are importing MIDI drum files for use with Logic. Do all drum files use the same MIDI mapping? If I drop a BFD2 loop into a Logic drum virtual instrument will it work? I bought a few packs from Groove Monkee but have yet to use them with Logic. I only use them within BFD2.
I'm basically looking for a seamless way to stay within Logic to improve my workflow. It's taken me days sometimes to get a drum track right by going back and forth with BFD2. Is there a concept I'm missing that would make it easier?
    Thanks

  • I have lots of beta monkey drum loops in WAV format, is there an easy way to convert format for garageband use?

to convert all these files for garageband use (apple loops)

You will have to convert them to proper Apple Loops - add tags for key and tempo, category.
One way to do this would be to use GarageBand to add the wav files to the Loop Library one by one:
Find out the tempo and the key (if applicable) of one of your loops.
Set the key and tempo for your project.
Import a loop to a real instrument track and name the track, select the loop and use the command "Edit > Add to loop library". Set all the tags correctly, so the loopp will be properly indexed.
There used to be a SoundTrack Loop Utility, but I am not sure if it is still available somewhere. My old links don't work anymore.

  • Best Drum program for logic???

HI need help..which is the better drum program.for a non drummer..Idrum..ezdrummer..or bfd?...what i intend on using it for is for making my own beats..i need to know if these r loop sampled software or can i make my own beats...thank u..any and all information on these items is great apprecated!!!

Ok, there;s two factors here. Drum sounds, and programming environment.
In my view, you already have Logic, which offers a superb drum programming environment from the start. I have a screenset with the hyper editor, event editor, event float and various other bits on there, and I can do very sophisticated drum programming/editing there.
Now, if you want a simpler approach to programming drums, more "drum machiney", then you want to use a grid-type approach. Here, you can either use Logic's matrix or hyper editors, or you can use the step sequencer within Ultrabeat, using acoustic drum sounds. You can do as sophisticated feel-type stuff here (you won't be convincing anyone you're using a real drummer!) but it's easier to work with patterns - you can always drag them to the arrange and work on them some more using Logic's more sophisticated tools.
So - drum sounds. There are quite a lot of freebie good acoustic drum multisamples on the net - look out for NS Kit, the GSCW kit and the Bulldawg kits in particular.
So, you can do all you want, without spending money at all.
If you absolutely do want to get a new toy, then you mostly have a choice between drum "instruments", that have great sounds, but expect you to be playing/programming them with your host, and so don't really offer programming facilties (DKFHS, BFD, Stylus type things), or the more "virtual drum machine" type things like iDrum, Guru, Battery etc.
Without knowing your working preferences, or exactly what you want, it's difficult to make a recommendation, but I would say you should start of with the tools you already have in Logic Pro, because you might find they suit you pefectly.
Sometimes buying a new toy does make life easier, but often it's just an excuse (if I buy this, I'll be able to finally make the super-dope beats I have difficult doing now).
Buying new stuff doesn't bypass the need to develop your musical skills (I wish that it did!
As a coda, I'll just mention that Stylus RMX rocks hard, with the acoustic expanders and new Orleans benefit library.
The EXS24 and a few drum sample libraries, and freebie net samples and a bit of work will give you much of what DKFHS & BFD give you, albeit in not as convenient a package. I loved the first DKFH, haven't heard the new ones, but I liked the character of their samples.
I heard the first version of BFD and I thought it was fairly bland in character, it didn't immediately appeal to me, although they have a ton of addons for it now, so I'm sure there's stuff in there I'd think were superb - it certainly has a good reputation.
But none of those, despite sounding potentially great, will give you drummer like beats if you don't know how to play/program drummer like beats (or you take the existing patterns/loops that some of those instrument contain and use/edit those), so I'd hate for you to be dissapointed.
Did I say that Stylus RMX rocks hard? Good.

  • Creating a custom drum staff for score and hyper editor

Can anyone clearly explain, how to create a custom drum staff to use in Score page? Each manufactor uses a different mapping. I would like to create a drum score for Korg, Yamaha, BFD, Superior etc.
I often change drum kits (BFD, Yamaha, GM, Korg, etc) while working on a song. I want to create a drum staff style to accomodate each of these. So the drum notation will be standard drum notation.
There is a GM drum staff style in Logic. When I use a GM kit, it works fine. But the best drum instruments use several articulations of each drum. I can't figure out how to edit it a drum staff to display what I need.
For instance Kik is normally C1. But some some drum instruments might use B0, C1, G5, C-1, all playing different articulations of kiks. I need to create a staff style which will show all these different notes as showing up on the bottom of the drum staff (standard drum notation)
I can create a Hyper drumkit for each different brand of drum . But I can't figure out how you incorporate that into the score editor. You must have to create a custom drum staff. But it eludes me....
    Thanx...

  • How to get a Mad Catz R.A.T 3/5/7 to work on Arch Linux

This post isn't about me asking for help.  Instead it is a post about how to get a Mad Catz R.A.T. 3/5/7 mouse working.  I'm posting this for future Archers who have bought one of these mice.  They're a good mouse product but unfortunately there is a weird bug in the mouse's firmware that makes it "lose focus" on a desktop or "locks" your cursor into the middle of your screen seemingly at random.  Your mouse might also fail to click on things in a window or on a desktop.  It took me the better part of a day and a half to find the answers to fix this behaviour.  I couldn't find anything on this forum so I'm posting this for future Archers.  I am not the originator of the solution so I will post the relevant information from others' posts from two different web sources.  If you're interested in the technical aspects of why this behaviour is present in this type of mouse please scroll down.*
The problem as summarised by the guy at Delightfully Linux:
if you plug in the mouse without modifying xorg.conf, the buttons become unresponsive and the Ubuntu desktop will appear to have locked up even though the cursor still moves. This is the same issue with the black R.A.T. 7, and it has the same solution.
He gives you one way to fix this:
Put the code below into /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Mouse Remap"
MatchProduct "Saitek Cyborg R.A.T.7 Albino" #change this if you need to by using input-list to generate the correct product code
    MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
    Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 0 0 0 0 0"
    EndSection
That button remapping full of zeroes will not let you use the side scroll button or the red button.
However, another person posted a comment to Delightfully's blog who claimed that his code (below) will enable all of the R.A.T.'s buttons.  I have tried it and it enabled my side scroll wheel for a few minutes.  It did not last and I have no permanent fix at this time.  If someone else does have a fix for the other two "buttons" on the mouse please post it!
The code which supposeldy enables all of the mouse's buttons is here:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/910-rat.conf and this file place in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
    # Cyborg Mouse R.A.T. 7 in Ubuntu 10.10 (Extra Buttons)
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "R.A.T."
    MatchProduct "R.A.T.7|R.A.T.9"
    MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
    Option "Buttons" "17"
    Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 4 5 0 0 8 9 7 6 12 0 0 0 16 17"
    Option "AutoReleaseButtons" "13 14 15"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
    EndSection
    Save and reboot
I can verify that both sets of code do work on a R.A.T. 7 Contagion and that others affirm it works for a R.A.T 3 or 5.
One final method of fixing this without bothering with files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is to use a .Xmodmap in your home directory with this in it:
Put this file in your home directory file in the user directory:

One final note: It seems that this mouse (on my rig at least) is incapable of scrolling in text boxes (such as the one I'm using to post this). I don't know why this behaviour is present but it was not like this, prior to using the previously written code that is, and I don't know if it is also fix-able. If you find out how to repair this function please post it in this thread.

There actually is a wiki entry that points to Delightfully's posts on his blog.  Honestly, I've never edited a wiki and I wasn't sure if I'd be stepping on someone else's wiki-toes (so to speak).  If there is interest in that, though, I'll learn to edit a wiki and add it.

  • Help Please! -- issue with Mad Catz controller

Can anyone help me out here? I have a Mad Catz Wireless PC Con and I'm having trouble getting it to work. After plugging it into a USB port, when I go to the System Profiler and go to the USB section, the PC Con is listed as hooked up to the USB port like it should be, so I know the computer is reading it properly, but I can't get it to work. When I open the apps I want to use it with, the buttons don't do anything. The obvious reason for this would be that the PC Con isn't compatible with those applications, but that's not the issue here because I have an application (USB Overdrive) that allows joysticks (or controllers or whatever) to be set up to work with any application, and this always worked for me perfectly when I had Tiger. With Tiger I used to use the PC Con with the emulator applications all the time, but now that I've upgraded to Leopard, nothing happens when I hit the buttons. There were no decent instructions with the PC Con. Is there anything I need to to do install the controller first before I can use it or something like that? Does anyone have any ideas for me? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

In your Preferences menu, Type section, what Text Engine Option have you chosen?

  • Hardware Help PLEASE - Mad Catz PC Con

Hello there. I own a Mad Catz PC Con (wired) as well as a Mad Catz Wireless PC Con. I can't get them to work on my computer. I also have an application called USB Overdrive that allows me to use the controller with applications that wouldn't otherwise support it (it's the same concept as GamePad Companion I think). The controllers used to work great for me when I had Tiger, but now that I've upgraded to Leopard, I just tried to use them for the first time and nothing happens. Is it possible that they were uninstalled during the upgrade process -- I can't find instructions anywhere on the internet for how to add new hardware on the Mac OS X. Is this something need to do with these controllers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm just trying to figure out why they won't work. When I go to the USB section of System Profiler, it lists the Mad Catz controllers like it should, so I know they computer is reading them, but they aren't working for any of the applications I have set up in USB Overdrive (again, they used to work fine with Tiger). I don't know where to go next with this. Can anyone help? Thanks alot for your time and help.

First of all thank you very much for your very quick response.
I also thought that maybe the Video Card or the CPU temperature is increasing and causes the hardware interrupts but the CPU temperature doesn`t go higher than 37-38 degrees Celsius and the SYS temp is 1 or 2 degrees lower. For example right now i am copying some files from a DVD and the Hardware interrupts are using avg. 30% of the CPU and the CPU temp is avg. 32 degrees Celsius and the SYS temp is avg 29 degrees Celsius. The temperatures are taken from the Core Center programme from MSI.If there is any other way to see my CPU`s and system`s temperature please tell me to check it.
As for the Hard Disks I am checking now one of them and there may be a problem.I will do some tests and i will inform you as soon as i can.
    Thank you very much
