Valid One-Time Backup Strategy?

I wanted to get some feedback on a one-time backup strategy. We currently run RMAN incremental level 0 backups once a week, then run incremental level 1 backups nightly. These seem sufficient for our needs.
In the near future, though, we are planning an upgrade of 9i to 10g. In case we need to undo the upgrade, I want to make sure I have all bases covered when performing this upgrade. My strategy is:
- Run a level 1 incremental right before starting the upgrade.
- Shut down the instance
- Backup the entire ORACLE_HOME(without the data files) using OS commands(tar)
- Backup the entire oraInventory directory.
If I needed to restore the 9i database to its pre-upgrade condition, I would simply untar the ORACLE_HOME, the oraInventory and then run an rman restore and recover.
Is there any flaw in this strategy?
Thanks, Nick

  • What is the best way of creating a one-time backup using DPM 2012R2?

    Hello,
Due to some severe tape issues, we have lost a lot of our long-term storage data.
I schedule a recovery point on our servers every Friday, once a week.  We retain this data for the 64 weeks (the maximum amount of versions DPM allows.)
Management needs me to put one recovery point from each month to tape (preferably from the beginning of each month.)
From the DPM console, I have been manually searching each server and running a recovery job from each "short term" recovery point we still have in the system.   I am recovering this data to a large disk array that I'm using as a staging
area.  My intention is to take this data and put it onto tape using DPM and leave it there forever (20 years.)
Since the space on the array is limited, I can only recover a few months at a time before having to delete the recoevered data to make way for the next group.
The way DPM works it seems you must have a protection group for every backup job you run;  so if I have to repeat this process 8 times, I'll end up with 8 different protection groups all assigned to the host running the staging array.  NOTE:
the host running the staging array will be wiped in the near future.
What would be the best method to carry this task out ?
This forum post is similar, but doesn't address all these additional groups created:

    Any assistance would be welcome!

    Hi,
What you can do is protect the staging server by using a single share - lets call it STAGING for simplicity.
Perform your first set a restores and restore to the staging share, you can create meaningful subdirectories one for each data source you are restoring.
Now protect the STAGING share using DPM - protect using long term to tape only, Frequency yearly, and set retention policy for 20 years.
Perform an ad-hoc backup (right-click the data source and create recovery point to tape)
When that completes, delete the sub-directories under the staging share and then repeat the process of restoring more data then backing up the same share.  When you are all done, you can remove the protection group, but maintain the tape backups
so they will be available for restores.

  • One-time backup

I need to rebuild an iMac and was wondering if Time Machine could be used as a one-time backup of the disk before flattening the hard drive on the system that needs to be rebuilt. Beyond that, it will not be used as the backup will go off-site for storage.
Would Time Machine be required to restore any files should it be necessary at a later date?
    Thanks!

Do you really need to erase your internal HD? +*Repair Disk,+* or a heavy-duty disk repair app like +Disk Warrior+ won't do it?
Yes a "bootable clone" is probably best for one-time use, but to be prudent, make two backups, preferably with two different apps, such as Time Machine and a clone. All hardware fails, sooner or later, and no app is perfect, so protect yourself as much as possible. It's rare, of course, but we do see posts where a backup drive failed during a restore, and everything was lost.
And the Restore tab of Disk Utility will make a clone, too. See #7 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
But however you make it, start up from it and run several apps, to be sure everything is ok, before erasing your internal HD.

  • Think I've lost a one time backup...

Think I've messed up a backup here. I backed up a folder I hadn't previouly been backing up on 7 June, but forgot to set the folder to back up automatically.
So today I needed to grab the original version, but think I've lost it because it was more than a month old, the point at which TC switches to weekly backups.
So my back ups go back in hourly increments for today, then daily increments back to 11 June, then weekly with the first one 5 June.
Does this mean I've lost the back up of that folder made on 7 June, or should I still be able to recover it somehow?

OK, thanks Bob. In case it was ambiguous before, 7 June was the only day this was backed up, and I didn't have a copy on my HD. So the only copy was the 7 June backup. Should that still have been consolidated somewhere before the 7 June backup was removed?
I think my only hope now is that it reappears when the next weekly consolidation backup is created, as the 5 June one pree-dates the 7 June backup.

  • Backup entire Macbook Pro-10.7 Lion (one time backup)

My local Apple Genius Bar recently installed a fresh install of OS10.7 Lion as the previous install appeared corrupt.  The tech said I could backup this new install to a external hard drive.  After this backup, I need to remove the external hard drive.  Is this possible and what steps are necessary including safe removal of hard drive etc.  Thank you for any suggestions!

Use a program such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to create the backup, and then click the Eject button to the right of the drive in the Finder's sidebar, or unmount it from the Disk Utility.

  • One-time library backup

It seems like I should have found the answer to this question by searching this forum, but I apparently didn't look for the right thing.
So, if I want to make a one-time backup of my Aperture library, so that I can kill the regular one and replace it with the backup in the case of a disaster, do I need to do anything more than copy the Aperture library in my Pictures folder?
I'm asking because I have 95% of my photos referenced into my iPhoto library, and I think it's time to have Aperture manage all those files. I figure that if something goes wrong with such a large operation, it will be catastrophic. I would like to ensure I can get both my iPhoto library and my Aperture library back to the exact state in which they are today, if something goes wrong while having Aperture start managing the masters. (Once I have that done, I will start using the vault for everything, but using the vault isn't quite what I want in order to "kill and fill" a corrupt database for recovery.)
    nathan

What should do is to re-import each snapshotted Project into a new Aperture Library. It will take a while as each re-imported Project will need to be analyzed by Aperture, but it works. I've had to restore snapshotted Projects a couple of times and it works fine.
The important thing to remember is that as you export your Projects, make sure you check the checkbox to include your referenced masters in the save dialog box.
As I mention in my blog posting, I recommend keeping Projects under 4.2GB in size so that they can easily be burned to DVD. Smaller is better- for Aperture performance as well.

  • One button backup of images (similar to Aperture's Vault)

I own both Apertue, and Lightroom...I use lighroom now and prefer it overall, but still miss aperture's "Vault" feature, which allows me to backup all files with the push of a button...would love to see this soon...thanks

Assuming you have a filesharing connection established between your Mac and PC you should be able to use Disk Utilities to create a disk image (select the Restore Tab) and set the PC as your destination drive. I wouldn't want to do this over WiFi but with a fast Ethernet connection it shouldn't be too painfully long.
Note: This isn't something I've tested so I cannot guarantee it will work. It would be much better to use an external drive and TimeMachine to make incremental backups. You underestimate how often programs get updates and your configurations change. Unless you keep a huge chunk of your Library folder linked to DropBox when the day comes that you need that back up you are likely to discover that a) your one time backup is much less helpful than you thought it would be and b) DropBox takes a long time to move everything from the cloud to your hard drive.

  • Time Capsule backup strategy for multiple drives and OS

I'd like a backup strategy based on Time Capsule but have a few twists from a straightforward situation and would appreciate any guidance with setting it up. My hardware situation is:
    - Two MacBooks, on 10.5, one with an 80 gb drive, the other with a 120 gb drive.
    - One G4 iMac, on 10.4, with a 60 gb drive
    - One LaCie NAS drive, used primarily as the storage space for music and video, and currently not backed up anywhere (making me nervous!)
Ideally I'd like each of these four units to be backed up on Time Capsule; and my configuration questions are in two areas:
    1) Backup software: I'll use Time Machine to backup the MacBooks, but not sure about the G4 and NAS drive. These could be backed up on a more ad hoc basis (I don't need hourly updates). Is this best handled with a third party app like SuperDuper to allow for incremental backups?
    2) Partition/disk image: is it wise (or indeed necessary) to create partitions for each of the above sources (I gather from reading other posts is seems the best way to achieve a partition is to create a disk image). I'm not sure if there would be any unintended consequences by doing so (or not),and if so if a sparse image disk image is better than a sparse bundle disk image given the above, so any guidance to help make sure it's set up as flexibly as possible from the outset would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    G'day Michael,
Sounds like it is time to buy OS X Server!!!!
I think you are on the right track. As a "left field" suggestion, why not get two big drives, and use one of them as a file server. Get everyone to use the file server for any critical documents that they want backed up centrally/continuously. Then back the file server system up onto the other big drive using TM.
This reduces administration somewhat, and privacy can be retained with careful username management across the network.
Assuming that the three MacBooks are similarly configured from a system perspective, there is not a lot of point in having full bootable clone's of each one. Perhaps create a bootable clone from one of them each week - and clone the other two into disk images (which are not bootable, but are restorable) as frequently as needed.
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • I have 2 auxillary disk drives for my MacBokk Pro. Time Machine uses one for backup and I use the other for storage, but I am unable to create a new folder or drag and drop files or folders to the aux drive.

I am unable to create a new folder on either of my auxillary disk drives.  I can access the files and folders that were there when I transferred one of the drives from a PC.  Time machine uses one for backup and I want to use the other to store photos which are large files.  An help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.  If I reformat the drive will I be able to access the files on it from the MAC.  I do not share the drive with a PC.  The files were originally created on a PC which I no longer use.  I do want to continue to access the files put there by the PC.  I would like to not have to copy them over to the MAC hard drive just to use them.  The second aux drive is new and works fine because it was formatted by the MAC.  I can drag and drop files there and work with just as if they were on the internal drive.

  • How can we take backup of all the RDL'S existing at Report server dynamically at one time

How can we take backup of all the RDL'S existing at Report server dynamically at one time ? I want to take backup of all the reports existing at the report server dynamically at one time only. currently I'm able to take backup of the reports folder wise
using VBScript. and I have to pass the folder names again and again. I want this to be happened for all the reports of all the folders at single shot only using VBScript.

    Hi DineshRemash,
Based on my research, we can store the following VB Script to a text file, then modify the file name extension from .txt to .rss.
Dim rootPath As String = "C:\Reports"
    Sub Main()
Dim items As CatalogItem() = _
    rs.ListChildren("/", true)
For Each item As CatalogItem in items
    If item.Type = ItemTypeEnum.Folder Then
    CreateDirectory(item.Path)
    Else If item.Type = ItemTypeEnum.Report Then
    SaveReport(item.Path)
    End If
    Next
    End Sub
    Sub CreateDirectory(path As String)
    path = GetLocalPath(path)
    System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory(path)
    End Sub
    Sub SaveReport(reportName As String)
    Dim reportDefinition As Byte()
    Dim document As New System.Xml.XmlDocument()
    reportDefinition = rs.GetReportDefinition(reportName)
    Dim stream As New MemoryStream(reportDefinition)
    document.Load(stream)
    document.Save(GetLocalPath(reportName) + ".rdl")
    End Sub
Function GetLocalPath(rsPath As String) As String
    Return rootPath + rsPath.Replace("/", "\")
    End Function
Then navigate to the folder contains the script, we can directly run the below command from the run menu:
    rs -s
    http://aa/ ReportServer -i download.rss
We can modify the rootpath to point at whaterver fold you’d like to download the RDL files.
    Hope this helps.

  • 2 full backup's at one time

    Hello!
We use IBM Tivoli Storage manager for backup our database 11.1.0.7 to SBT_TYPE.
Can we do 2 backups at one time, if we use 2 dsmc schedulers and 2 TYPE's (Not same SBT_TYPEs) - drive's ?
    Backups are full (using RMAN).

We do not delete our full backups for 22 days and do 1 arch copy at month to another device. (and save it for 1 year)
I tested that full backup to SBT_TYPE with archive copies running ok with level1 backup and with incr backup arch files at every 1 hour.
I only intersting is it possible to take 2 backups at 1 time...

  • Best backup strategy

Time Machine is brilliant. It's saved me many times.
But recently, the backup drive with a year's worth of backups, died.
I therefore lost ALL my backups.
Not a major problem as I still have my current data and having re-formatted the Time Machine drive it's merrily backing it all up again.  (I just hope I don't need to recover to last week's backup ... as I no longer have it.)
But until that's finished I have NO backups!  Eeek!
So what is the best backup strategy, bearing in mind drives can fail, houses can burn down, etc.  Should I have two or three Time Machine backup discs and keep swapping them every day so if one dies I've still got a one-day-old version?
Making DVD backups and storing them elsewhere is very time consuming and while my data is really important to me, it defeats the object if I can get on with any work on that data as I'm constantly burning to lotsof DVDs!
    Your views would be appreciated!

I pretty much do a similar thing, but my offsite backup goes to a locked cabinet in my office (easier to get to weekly to bring home and update then using a bank - I honestly cannot remember when I last physically went to my bank, its been years).
TM makes a great source for restoring single files or being able to go back to an earlier version of a file.  And the clones are easier for full restoration, or even for booting from temporarily if the machines boot drive dies and you just want to get in to deauthorize it before sending in for repairs or such.  Always good to have a bootable clone around, for many reasons.
My external clones are on firewire 800 bus powered portable drives, again for simplicity (no power cables or bricks to go with them).
I also still burn to optical disc for specific things like filed tax returns, and other financial documents I need to keep around in the fire safe for some period of time.
