Verizon Speed Test Working?

Just curious about this, since there are obviously other methods available to achieve the desired result.  No matter how often or hard I try, I cannot get this test to run, either in a limited account or an admin account.  It always asks to install Java 6/21, when I already have the latest Java 6/32 installed.  It just sits and percolates.   Folks, does this thing work?

Yeah.. The other "gotcha" along with admin mode was 64bit won't fly. I should've mentioned it. WTG....

  • Accuracy of Verizon Speed Test

I am wondering about the accuracy of the Verizon speed test.  I have the 75/35 service and I am testing today around 10/15 on several test sites...except Verizon. The Verizon site, in the past and today, ALWAYS tells me the speed is what it is supposed to be. I find this very strange.
I typically use speedtest.net and have logged results from 75/35 to what I have today.

If you really want to know your true day to day speeds sign up for www.samknows.com I'm subscribed to SamKnows that is a free resource for consumers and volunteers. Their goal is to embed software suite into internet enabled devices to build the most accurate picture of global broadband performance. I am a participant & I get a report card that measures my speed etc....
They are contract by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to research and collect data on American fixed-line broadband speeds delivered by Internet Service Providers (ISP's) - until now, something that has never been undertaken in the USA.
99.9999999% of the time get faster upload & download speeds... I had Optimum before & they don't even come close to the performance or reliability.....

  • FIOS 150/150 but only showing 95/95 on Verizon Speed Test

Some context - have been on the 150 plan for about 6 months since dumping TV and Phone Service. I originally had the Quantum gateway router but was dissatisfied with the wireless coverage.Purchased a Netgear R7000 about 5 months ago and used it as an Access Point with the Quantum Gateway as the Router. Getting 150 up and down no problem.Switched out the Quantum router and used the Netgear R7000 as my only router and access point about 4 months ago. Was still getting 150 up and down. Returned the Quantum gateway to Verizon. At the beginning of this week, started upgrading some of the family PCs to Windows 10. After upgrade, realised that the Internet was slow. Measured using Verizon Speed Test, all of the PCs were showing 95/95 consistently. Tried it with my Macbook pro and was the same so not a Windows 10 issue. Rebooted router, no difference. Reset router to factory settings - no difference. Updated router firmware - no difference. Got in touch with Verizon support - they tested the connection, reset it and confirmed that I am still provisioned for 150/150.. Ordered a new Quantum Gateway to check that there is not a router issue (dubious on this) and will try it when it arrives. Has anyone had a similar experience or can anyone offer advice on troubleshooting this?

This is just a shot in the dark but when you were running the speed test(s) on your Mac, did you have any Windows 10 machines shut down? If not, and if you haven't disabled Windows 10's default bandwidth sharing setting, you might be experiencing bandwidth usage as explained in this article: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2955288/microsoft-windows/windows-10-commandeers-users-upload-bandwidth.html

  • Verizon Speed Test

I have tried running the Verizon speed test on both Chrome and Firefox both become non responsive. I have no idea what code Verizon runs but it sure plays havoc on the browsers.  Both ask permission to run JAVA which I approve, but still locks up.

Sounds like Java being Java to me. Always loving to break itself or something else.
Just re-install Java, after of course checking your Firewalls. Verizon's speed test operates on the Web100/NDT testing system which is pretty robust.

  • High latency and poor speed tests lately

For the past 4-5 days, I've been working with various Verizon techs to resolve a high latency/slow Internet problem.  Their ultimate solution was that they have no idea why it's doing this, and since I can reach a few websites at full speed and their line tests show I'm operating at full provisioning, it's not their problem.  "We can't control traffic outside of our networks."  Well, my results are also showing problems with the Verizon servers, so I would think they should be more concerned.  Most websites, however, exhibit the problem.  So I'm stuck, looking for a better answer than "go away."  Maybe some of you are experiencing a similar problem with latency or sporadic speeds?
My provisioning is 20M/5M.  I'm in the L.A. area. (In the traceroutes below, I masked Hop 2 for privacy.)
I've experienced this problem with 2 computers (1 desktop, 1 laptop), both using Ethernet ports; one test using wireless on the laptop.  I've plugged the router directly into the ONT coax to eliminate my house wiring as the culprit.  Westell 9100EM router.
A few websites seem okay, and speedtest.net results always show provisioning at full speed to the L.A. server, but the problem persists when using the non-L.A. server.  With speakeasy.net, even the L.A. server exhibits the problem.  The latency gets worse as the night goes on, sometimes over 1000ms for some traceroute hops.  In the morning, it seems to be back to normal.
    Thanks for any help....

MisterJefferson, your problem looks to be with hop #3. That is a Verizon router just after the gateway router for you. This will need to be addressed by a Verizon Network technician. Your hops to your router and your hop to the gateway look fine. Verizon will need to reboot that second router or re-route your hops.
Chernabog, yours is more difficult, you dont have any obvious big issue. However you do have a moderate jump at hop number 8. this is off the verizon network and is out on the internet. on one of the ATT routers. Unlikely you are going to be able to do anything about this. And as it is off the Verizon network, there would be nothing verizon could do about it either. Usually though, if it is a router needing rebooting, it will generally self correct after a few days. Or you could be unlucky enough to be going through a system that is overloaded or just plain old. This can be frustraiting. I myself play a lot of online games and if the server is in Washington DC (I'm in California) one of the hops I have to go through is in kentucky with sprintlink and their routers constantly give me a 500ms ping and I havent been able to get it corrected in over 4 years. Something we sometimes have to live with when it is out of our control.

  • Can Web Performance Test work on AJAX or Javascript Project which will show only one URL for all the pages?

    Hi there,
I'm working on testing a AJAX and JavaScript Project which has several pages but all in the same URL. I need to test some attribute on the page or parameter past by AJAX or Javascript. Can Web Performance Test work to get what I want?
    Thanks,

    Hello,
    Thank you for your post.
Web performance test is used to test if a server responses correctly and the response is consistent with what we expected. And we test the response speed, the stability and scalability.
The Web Performance Test Recorder records both AJAX requests and requests that were submitted from JavaScript, but
web test does not execute JavaScript. I am afraid that you can’t use web test to test parameter past by AJAX or JavaScript.
    Please see:
    Web Performance Test Engine Overview
About JavaScript and ActiveX Controls in Web Performance Tests
From the first link, “Client-side scripting that sets parameter values or results in additional HTTP requests, such as AJAX, does affect the load on the server and might require you to manually modify the Web Performance Test to simulate the scripting.”
If you want to execute the function typically performed by script in web test, you need to accomplish it in coded web performance test or a web performance test plugin. Please see:
How to: Create a Coded Web Performance Test
How to: Create a Web Performance Test Plug-In
I am not sure what the ‘some attribute on the page’ is. If you mean that you want to test those controls on the page, you can do coded UI test, which can test that the user interface for an application functions correctly. The coded UI test performs actions
on the user interface controls for an application and verifies that the correct controls are displayed with the correct values. You can refer to this article for detailed information about code UI test:
Verifying Code by Using Coded User Interface Tests

  • The Delete Speed Test for Pages 2

    Hello Pages fans,
“Speed” is a subjective term, so I wonder what people will find if they do this test:
Paste a phrase such as “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’s back. ” ten times to make a dummy paragraph. Put the cursor at the end of the paragraph and press and hold the delete key and count the seconds it takes to delete back through the the entire paragraph, letter by letter. (This will depend on the key repeat rate you set in System Preferences.)
If I delete a particular paragraph this way using Pages 2, when viewing the document in narrow format (i.e. viewing “fit page”) it takes about 22 seconds. If I view “fit width” and stretch the width across my 23-inch cinema display the same task takes about 101 seconds.
Using Pages 1 it takes about 22 seconds (“fit page”) or about 27 seconds (“fit width”). Not as bad.
I have tried every single fix proposed in this discussion forum to speed up Pages - to no avail. I am using a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz with 1GB RAM, a 23-inch display, 10.4.5 and the very latest updates. I have no other problems whatsoever in any other applications.
Incidentally, In Word 2004 the same exact test takes about 17 seconds no matter what (whether viewed at 10%, 500% or anything in between).
Trust me- I don’t actually sit around deleting paragraphs like this all day, but I do notice a very annoying typing lag. I’ve basically given up on Pages as a serious writing tool because of this typing lag / speed issue and gone back to Word. Pages 1 works fine and served my purposes for a year, but what future does the Pages application have if version 2 performs so poorly?
Do those who report having blazing fast Pages 2 performance experience this problem with this test?
Yes, this is a dreadfully boring test! But at least it’s not subjective and it’s not as iffy as watching the system monitor percentages jumping around.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
various macs...   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

True, MMINSO, I can just go use some other word processor. (Thanks for the tip.) I'm sorry to laugh at your suggestion but you entirely missed the point of my keyboard input test when you told me to just delete the whole paragraph at once.
Ee gads... we could start a flame war over this! Can anyone think of a better, more reliable speed test to measure how Pages handles keyboard input?
When I type text while viewing a document at full width across my screen, the typing is much slower than when I view the document tiny size. The typing lags. By "lags" I mean that the keyboard input is behind what I am typing. I devised a mind-numbingly simple little keyboard input test to replicate this problem perfectly. Again: This test directly replicates the type of keyboard input slowdown problem I encounter while doing normal typing. So it's certainly relevant, and it's also measurable and replicable.
Naturally, it's not the actual number of seconds that counts, it's whether any given keyboard input task slows down when we do it viewing at different widths. The keyboard input rate changes, you see.
I had hoped that someone would verify whether they experience the same lag in typing under the same conditions. In other postings, others have simply described the problem as "infuriating" and dropped Pages entirely. I don't think that's very useful. I was trying to be a bit more scientific about it in the hopes that it might actually be helpful.
Maybe there's a better way to accurately demonstrate keyboard input lags in Pages?
Maybe my machine is the only one experiencing any slowness.

  • Difference between Transceiver Statistics vs. Speed tests

We had been having problems with our DSL speed today.  We discovered (obviously) that most of the problem was that my son was watching Netflix on our TV (through an app directly on the tv, not through a game console), which was sucking up most of our bandwidth.
But, while testing things out, we checked our Transceiver Statistics.  We are getting about 3300 mbps download, but after running two different speed tests (speedtest.net and bandwidthplace.net), it seems we only ever really get about 1.5 - 1.6 mbps.  This was after turning off the Netflix stream, by the way.  This is basically our normal speed.
At any one time, we have 2 laptops and 2 Android phones connected to our network through a Beklin wireless router, as well as a desktop connected to the Belkin router through an ethernet cable.  The tests have been consisten regardless of the number of computers running at the time, as long as they aren't doing anything with a real network load.
I don't think it's a problem with the router, because we can copy files between the computers at about 4 megabytes per second (36 megabits per second).  Althought the WiFi connection says it's running at about 130 megabits per second.  Maybe that's an issue with disk speed, I don't know...
Anyway, is there anything weird going on, or is it a symptom of outside network load that our speed tests are roughly half the value we see on the Transceiver Statistics for the modem?
Here is the full details from our Westell modem Transciver Statistics:
    Transceiver Revision: 7.1.254

The transceiver stats only measure the speed of the connection between your DSL Modem/Router and the Central Office Equipment. You can get the full 3mbs downlink speed with losses a lot higher than 42db   I have seen it above 60db and still providing 3mbps.
However the link between your modem and the Central office is only small part of the total path between your computer and whatever internet site you are connecting too. Speed tests measure end to end, as opposed to only a small part of the message path. As a result speed tests almost always show lower performance than transceiver stats.
The best analogy is Verizon effectively only provides the on and off ramps to the Internet Superhighway. Just because the local  ramp is clear is no assurance there aren't traffic jams elsewhere on the highway. The problem with most speed tests is you have no idea how your traffic was actually routed, and what constraints may be placed on it by parts of the network that Verizon has no control over.
The transceiver stats represent the best possible case. The reality is there is no shortage of issues upstream from the central office, either on, or off the Verizon network that can restrict your actual speed to considerably less than 3mbps. It is unlikely that your wiring inside the house is an issue, if it was, you would be seeing a downlink speed at less than 3mbps.
However your uplink speed seems slow. The nominal uplink for the 3mbps tier of DSL service is 768kbps, not 512kbps.

  • Speed testing proceed with caution??

I've been fascinated by the various reports of variable speeds being seen on  various different speed testing sites, so I've been having a play, and the results have been, shall we say, interesting.
Let's start at the top. No matter which machine I access it from, http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ shows me 56megs down and 12.89 up, with a max achievable of 60.1/20.
Namesco's  ( http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ ) shows 33623/14734 on my "work" partition, but if I reboot into another partition which is set up for webcasting, it, too reports the full 56megs down and 14/15 up. Same connection, same wires, barely five minutes apart on Mac OS X 10.7.3 in both partitions.
If I then, boot back into the work partition, and bring up Speedtest.net not only on there, but also on a couple of other machines, and set them all to check simultaneously, the combined total of the download speeds is - guess... yup, 56megs down and around 14 up.
Aside from quite fancying my connection giving me that full 20megs up (OK, I know, it'll be 19 or so), I'm really quite happy with this - and it does point out that, in all likelihood, severely fluctuating speed tests may not necessarily be line-related. If I wasn't able to reproduce all of this more or less at will, I may have thought differently, but it's an entirely repeatable excercise.

Yes indeed, none of the speedtests are reliably accurate all the time as their servers and routes to the server are subject to varying conditions. Speedtest.net is very dependent on which server you select, as their automatic server selection chooses based on ping results, which does not always give you a server with the fastest data rates (my results vary from 35 to 70Mbps, or as low as 2Mbps if you go out as far as New Zealand ). BT's main http://speedtester.bt.com/ (diagnostics) is up the pole for most of the day and is only any use for finding out your profile. However, their beta test is pretty good and is always worth trying: http://speedtester.bt.com/beta/speedtest-remote.jsp
BBMax is often said to be the best one but that could just be because it uses a much smaller download file and the test lasts for a shorter period of time. That means there is less scope for varying line and server conditions to intervene, and for Internet Security programs to slow things down.
    So what I do is:
    a) Turn off my Internet Security program (this can be very important)
    b) find the fastest speedtest.net server and use that result
    c) use BT beta speedtest (as I already know my profile)
    d) check BBMax
The results of these three methods are nearly always between 69.x Mbps and 71.x Mbps, my profile is 72.8 Mbps. I don't think you'll ever get your 19Mbps upload by the way as I am on a 20Mbps cap but the fastest upload speed I've seen is 16.x binary Mbps and 17.x decimal Mbps.

ShaperProbe has not been usable for some time, unfortunately. Check to see if Comcast is reporting an outage for your area by logging in to https://customer.xfinity.com/Secure/MyServices/ or by checking the voice response system at 1-800-Comcast.
If no outage is reported, see Connection Troubleshooting Tips. If you want to troubleshoot this yourself and still need help, please provide Information Requested for Connection-Related Posts.
If you are using Wifi it's best to switch to an Ethernet connection if possible while measuring speed and checking the reliability of your connection to Comcast.
If you'd rather have them do the troubleshooting call them at the phone number on your bill or 1-800-Comcast and have them send a tech out to identify the cause and correct it.
If the tech finds bad coax, splitters, amplifiers, or connections in your home (even if Comcast originally supplied them) you'll probably have to pay for the visit unless you have their Service Protection Plan (http://www.xfinity.com/spp/, about $5/mo). If the trouble is due to a faulty Comcast modem, eMTA, gateway device, or anything outside your home, you shouldn't be charged.

  • Flash Player only partially opens my ISP's speed test

I am having trouble with line speed and download speed. My ISP has directed me to their speed test, which has to be done several times and submitted before they will investigate.
I have tried to use the test several times on my networked pc and the flash player plugin will not complete the download of information.
I have reinstalled Adobe flash player several times with no change.
I have temporarily disabled my firewall with no change.
I can use the speed test on a netbook connected by wireless to the same network

The videos that DO work are most likely HTML5 which requires no plugin.
Spotlight search "Flash Player.plugin" and trash EVERYTHING in the results.
Go to: [user]/Library/Preferences (Hold the "Option" key when you click "Go" from the Finder menu to access this folder)
    Trash the com.macromedia.Flash Player.app.plist file.
Trash the Macromedia folder from there as well (the WHOLE folder).
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Trash the Flash Player folder and the Flash Player Install Manager folder.
Go to: Mac HD/Library/ Internet Plugins.
    Trash the flashplayer.xpt file.
    Empty the trash.
Download the offline installer: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/mac /install_flash_player_11_osx.dmg  and run it.
If after all that, it still doesn't work, we'll need to look at other plugins you have that may be causing a conflict.
I have Safari, Firefox, Opera and Chrome, as well as a few "off brand" browsers and Flash Player works in all of them. Late 2012 Mini, Core15, 16Gb RAM.

  • Has anyone done 3G speed tests yet?

I assume all the problems mentioned here will get worked out in short order, but I've seen nothing here comparing 3G speeds to Wifi speeds on these new units.
If anyone has done some test along these line, could you post results?
    Thanks--

I know some people have been having problems with the 3G but I have been very happy with it so far. Setup took about 30 seconds yesterday. Initial speeds were around 1.8 Mbps download, then later slowed to around 1mbps, likely due to all the demand. Every speed test I ran showed the iPad to be at least 20% faster than my iPhone 3G. Around midnight it began to speed up as people went to bed - at one point I had 3.2mbps download, which is excellent considering AT&Ts max theoretical speed right now is 3.6mbps. I have never had a speed over 2.2mbps on my iPhone.
Today I was using it in the car on a route I often take. One area along the drive is an AT&T dead zone - my iPhone always drops to "No Signal" as do any other AT&T phones. Despite this, my iPad held on to 4 bars and managed a 1mbps speed test in the heart of the dead zone. I also have found the WiFi on the 3G model to be slightly stronger than the wifi only model, presumably due to the plastic top which breaks the aluminum case.
I for one do not have any problem with AT&T restricting some of the video apps. The iphone was the same way and I wasn't expecting the iPad to be any different. All in all I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

  • Spring is in the air, and right on cue my Verizon DSL stops working. AGAIN

Some background. I have Verizon DSL service, with a phone line dedicated to its use. The phone line is used for nothing else, and has the required filters attached.
Two years ago, when spring arrived, we began have trouble with out internet connection. Our modem would get a red light on the Internet connection. This would happen every day between 10am and noon, and would last from minutes to hours. I spent hours on the phone with Tech support. They reduced speed, which was unnacceptable and did not work. They sent a tech to our home twice that summer to replace lines inside the house, replace line outside the house, make adjustments at  the central office and the local "hub". Nothing worked. Fall came, the issues stopped, and everything worked fine thoughtout the winter.
Last year, spring arived, we began to have trouble with out internet connection. Same thing as the previous year. Called tech support. Told them that I had done this song and dance the previous year. I would not start from the beginning with every single call, I would not turn off/on the modem, give model numbers, check direct lines from computer to modem. I had done it all the previous year. I thought surely there was some kind of record for my account that could be accessed. To no avail. I spent countless hours and days on the phone with tech support. I spoke with techs, supervisors, managers, talked, yelled, got nowhere. They sent a new modem. Nothing changed. They sent the same tech to my home as the previous year. He still didn't know what the problem was. Changed the phone jack. Changed a different line outside. Still didn't work.
I came on here and left a lenghthy message voicing my frustration. I was told that someone from the US tech support office would contact me (Executive Appeals). The representative from there was very helpful. He explained what each of the lights on the modem did and what blinking/not blinking/ off/red actually meant. He had them change the modem at the central office. Problem solved, I thought. We had out normal running speed of 3360/863 again. No more internet cutting out daily. But, it was fall. Apparently, this would have happened anyway. Because...
This year, spring arrived, and we are having trouble with our internet connection. We have any and all combinations appearing on the modem. The internet cuts out at all times of the day and night. It stays off for minutes to hours. Internet flashes, turns red, goes out. DSL and DATA blink, stay on, alternate blinking speeds. Sometimes the phone line has static, other times it doesn't. There is no pattern to anything.
I have not called normal tech support. The people in India are clueless, have never come close to solving the issue, and I will not waste my time and cell phone minutes talking to them. I saved the phone number and all information for the US representative I spoke with last year. I have left 2 messages for him over the past week. He will not return my call. Our internet speed had gone from 3360kbps/863kbps, to 2928kbps/860kbps, to 2560kbps/860kbps, to 2112kbps/860kbps over the course of the last week, as shown on the verizon modem page. This is what they do every year, and it in UNACCEPTABLE. Slowing the speed accomplishes nothing, since we still have the same problems. All that changes is we have DSL service that runs a little faster than dial-up.
If anyone out there has a suggestion as to what I can do to fix these issues after 3 years, please let me know. Apparently no one at Verizon knows how to address the problem.

    Verizon Reps,
I have not been to my private message thread "Spring is in the air, and right on cue my Verizon DSL stops working. AGAIN"  since the beginning of June. The problems I was experiencing have not been fixed, but I was not posting because nothing was happening for a while. My Verizon Appeals rep was trying to figure out what to do.
She has since had 2 techs come to the house. The second one just recently. He changed something in the box a few blocks away. This not only didn't fix it, but has made the issue more prevelent than it was before. I would like to record all of our outages and lost connections, but the thread appears "closed".
At this point, I'm not sure it matters. The rep all but said that she has no idea what to do to fix it, or if it can be fixed. Fresh out of ideas, I guess. But I'd still like to keep track, since we have been without internet more than with for the last few days.
    Thanks,
    Theresa
