Verizon, why is HTC Incredible such an awful device?

Hey Verizon,
I wonder if you actively read/censor these forums because here is my question:
Why do you continue to sell/support awful phones such as the HTC Incredible?
I'm on my 2nd Incredible which is properly updated, yadda yadda yadda. It still suffers from common issues that YOU DENY exist. I'm on my second replacement phone (due to a reboot loop, which although was well documented in various parts of the internet you swear didn't exist) which now exhibits the same issues (only now it's out of warranty, convenient for you, yeah?). Of course, despite a multitude of internet posts, youtube videos showcasing the behavior, etc., you swear it doesn't exist. So my question to you is why do you continue to ally yourselves with such shoddy products/maufacturers?
Certainly you must expect that people will be upset when they purchase a device that doesn't last the terms of your 2-year contract (I'm up in December, and you can bet I'm not continuing)? Certainly you must feel the financial letdown from folks cancelling after their 2-years are up and jumping ship to ATT, T-Mobile, Virgin, or (the really smart) deciding US wireless is a sham? I'm assuming this must hit your bottom line or your shareholders somehow?
I'm sure your average smartphone user doesn't want to remove his/her SD card periodically to prevent (temporarily) reboots, and doesn't want to factory reset their phone to get an OTA update that YOU KNOW is faulty. My phone rarely operates free of issue as a phone, free of issue as a camera, or free of issue as a smartphone. Of course yes, I know those problems that many people are having and have documented on these forums and others don't exist (in your minds at least) but humor me here.
Why do you continue to push devices you know are sub-par and you know won't last? What do you expect to gain?
Personally, I'm free from my 2-year contract (wish I could have had a phone that lasted that long) in about 60 days, which is a huge relief because I've grown tired of paying for 4G LTE service when the majority of the time I'm in 1X (not to mention your illegal data throttling on my Grandfathered "unlimited" account once I've hit the 2GB limit that I never agreed to. Breach of contract anyone?), at which point I'll be dropping your business forever. So, one account soon to be down, how is that business model working for you Verizon?
If you've made it this far (and if this post is miraculously not deleted) I urge you:
Consumer: drop these ******** as soon as you can.
Verizon: get in touch with me, you've got all my info. Lend me a phone that will work (a WORKING phone, one capable of sending/receiving calls without random reboots) until Dec 06th and after that I'll send it back to you along with my last payment and we'll  never have to converse again.
If you're in a similar boat forum members, please chime in.
Thanks for your time.

My Incredible was lovely. Didn't have a single issue with it. Traded it in for a Moto Razr M and somehow I feel like I ditched an old faithful friend. My first Razr M crapped out and let me down. Had to exchange it for another one.  Sure Verizon's expensive and their data allowances are meager, miniscule and paltry, but I can live with that for now. So everyone's experience is different. Sorry you've had issues with your Droid Inc.

  • Can you use a non-Verizon USA Prepaid SIM card in a HTC Incredible 2?

I've investigated this forum, and others on the web and there is some confusion to the right answer to my question. I also got different answers from Verizon support. So here's my particular situation.
I renewed my Verizon plan that included a new Motorola RAZR Max HD several months ago to replace my HTC Incredible 2 .I have successfully used my new Motorola phone with overseas SIM cards.
After having the HTC unlocked, I was able to successfully use the HTC phone overseas with various foreign SIM cards. I had initially tested the phone with a USA T-Mobile SIM card with no problems.
This week I decided to give my mother the phone (mainly for pictures, etc.) and use a prepaid H2O SIM calling card. The HTC phone shows the right H2O information such as SIM & IMEI number but the telephone number is not the H2O Sim one but my old telephone number that I'm using on the Motorola.  I tried a factory reset but didn't help.
    1.  Can I use non-Verizon USA SIM cards in the HTC phone?  If yes, how do I do it?
    2.  If  not, why did the T-mobile one worked?
    3.  If I find a way to change the phone number to my new SIM card's telephone number, will that work?
    4.  I read about "rooting" a phone, will this work?
    5.  Some told me that it was illegal  for Verizon to monopolize the phone. Is this true?
Thanks for the help!! Tilly Saint

I understand it's important to obtain the correct information tillysaint, and I'm happy to help you. The device is designed to work on our network. If the software was altered to work on the network you mentioned, some service and features are not available. In addition, the network you're trying to use may not be compatible with H20. The phone is a 3G phone which means if the network you want to use is on GSM, this will not work.

  • Broken HTC Incredible and Verizon service update

Here is what has went on. Sorry for the length.
    My first post:
Great phone for the 22 hours it worked.
I got my Incredible May 10th, it died May 11th.
Then it stopped charging, the battery goes dead. Red charge light on, green battery icon on top of screen has little lightening bolt thru it. Green indicator moves back and forth like its charging. Tried removing and reinstalling battery.  Sometimes it charges until red light turns green, then its dead within an hour, with the phone completely shut off, not sleeping but OFF. All while still plugged in.
Tried supplied wall charger, Verizon car charger. All the same.
Tried a new battery they sent me. It acts the same.
Took it to the local Verizon store, they said its broken too.
They ordered me a new one on the 17th.
3 hard resets, 3 sessions with tech suport over as many days. Told I will have a new phone June 9th. 30 days after it broke. Just in time for my 30 evaluation period to end. I can have one extra week they said, my how gracious. I dont have the equippment but the time expires just like if I did. They also made me pay another $212 dollars to order the replacement phone. I it get back 2 weeks after they recieve the broken one in return.
Back to my totally reliable Blackberry tour.
I was told by the last tech guy that thats life. Its not Verizons problem its HTC's problem and I am out of luck as far as extending eval time. Or any considerations at all.
Lets see, its Verizons equippment, but not their problem. I got if from them but its not their problem that its junk.
I'm unlucky and thats my fault, they see no liability in my bad luck.
He also said you should never buy a newly released product because they always have problems.
All 3 also said they have not seen or heard of any problems at all with the Incredible.
I must be the only unlucky person in the whole world.
The **bleep** thing worked for a day, one day.
They also said that if there was a refurb available I would get that as a replacement and not a new one so I am lucky there is not a refurb.
Are you kidding me, a phone breaks in one day and they would replace with a refurb????
I work in customer service, I would be fired if I went anywhere near where Verizon is going. "Were sorry for your bad luck" ,"Dont buy newly released equippment", "Its not our problem" , " You only derserve a refurb phone"  that doesnt cut it.
My phone didnt die, Verizons phone died. Period.
I could understand it if it died 4 weeks after I got it. I could see their point after that long. But the next day, get real Verizon???
Frustrated, disappointed, angered, in utter deblief.
The best network, sure. The best customer service, far from it.
    Their reply:
I would like to apologize for the malfunctioning equipment and the poor customer service that you were provide. I will definitely forward this to the correct correspondence to be reviewed. Our Certified Like New phones are tested and guaranteed like new as if you received them straight from the manufacturer. Brand new phones, maybe 10% of the entire inventory are tested for functionality, so it is possible for a bad one to slip out every once in a while. Since you have already purchased a new one and have to wait for it in the mail, I can see what we can do to have your 30 day guarantee extended longer than a week. May I have you mobile number and full name? Please allow me some time to review the account and get with the necessary contacts to see what I can make happen from my end.
Then after 5 days I had to sent a why didnt I hear anything message.
    Then I get this response:
I do apologize and thank you for your patience. I did have my superiors work with your account, however they have advised because you have already accepted the agreement with customer care, we won't be able to go over their agreement.
    My respone to them:
I didn't accept their agreement! Oh my god!!
They didn't give me what I asked for or help solve my issues.
All I was told is what they couldn't do. As well as wouldn't do.
As well as everything I put in my post.
If you're talking about the month to evaluate the new phone.
They didn't give me a choice. What was I supposed to say "naa I don't want an extra week"?
I asked forcefully for my full period, without being irate.
I was told there was no way anyone was going to do that for me.
How in god's name can you say my evaluation period is up when your equipment failed in 22 hours and you could not supply new equipment to evaluate?
How can Verizon take that stance in good faith????
I know now Verizon does not care about one account.
At least mine, on any level.
I will change my stance if you could tell me one thing.
How is any of this my fault?
    Why am I being penalized?
    Am I wrong here people???

i am only posting this to present another side (of the htc di....NOT verizon....lol). they should give people 30 days from when they get the replacement....not the broken one they got initially. anyway, most of the people that come to forums do so to resolve issues, problems, etc. look at all of the threads. they are people with problems, complaints, or questions. they sold 100,000 incredibles in the first few days it was available. and yes, a handful of them have issues. i'd be willing to bet that 7 months ago the forum was filled with brand new bunk moto droids, and that a couple years ago there were at&t forums that were filled with bad iphones recieved. i'm not excusing it. i'm just saying it's brand new and there will be bugs with brand new devices....and some that are just flat out broke. but it seems that 99,000+ of them are just fine. i've been with verizon for ten years and have had no problems. even got some early upgrades. it's a shame that their service appears to have gone downhill, but it's no better with the other carriers. i've just seen a handful of people here that desire to change carriers....and that's fine. but i also suspect they will come across the same bad service once in a while no matter who you go with. this forum is similar to anything else....when you have a bad experience at a restaurant you want to call the manager....nobody calls the manager or visits the forum to tell you how great their service was that day.

  • HTC Incredible reboot fix that works and does NOT require hard reset

Like many of you unfortunate souls out there I have had my HTC Incredible go into a rebooting loop over the last month or so. The following recounts some observations and and a solution which appears to work.
First off, my son and I both have the same phone and software versions and apps. He does NOT get email on his phone because he does not want to. I do. His phone has NEVER rebooted. Mine has done so numerous times. My business partner also has the identical phone and software version, lives within 200 yards of me,  and uses the email and has had numerous reboots and has gotten them even sooner than I saw them at first. My partner and I have set up email attachments and downloads to go to the SD card. So much for background info. Here is what I did to fix the problem followed by some other observations:
Open up the case of the phone and remove the battery
Remove the SD card from the phone.
Put it into an adapter that allows you to access files directly on your computer. In my case this was a Windows PC running Windows 7.
Mount the SD card in your computer and open up the browser to see the files on the SD card.
Look for a folder called ".Mail"
If your phone is like mine you will see hundreds of files, some of zero length. This was even though I had deleted most of the emails I received on my phone.
Proceed to directly delete any of the zero length files. For that matter, you may have other files like jpg's laying around of uncertain origin. I got rid of these and other strange files that seemed attached to no documents at all.
Remove the SD card and reinsert into your phone. Put the battery back in and the cover on then restart the phone. Your phone should run properly and you should not see any negative consequences from the files you deleted previously.
Some other observations relevant to this solution that bolsters my theory that this problem has something to do with the email application and also a problem with file system corruption on the SD card as a consequence of it.
I had previously seen the email application put some mail from a different account I was using into my main account. The files could not be deleted and even trying to do so would cause the mail app to force close.
My son has never seen the problem despite being in the same environment with the same phone and software. Relevant difference to me was that he was NOT using email and I was.
The email app clearly has bugs if it is leaving behind hundreds of files even if you delete the emails. Why? As a software engineer my first instinct would be to look to see if the file system locks were properly synchronized when the email app is writing to the flash file system. I am not conversant in Android OS programming nor the app code itself so this is speculative on my part. I would also look for a timeout on reboots if file system enumerations take too long. Lots of files on a system might trigger a premature timeout and reboot. Once again, this is speculative on my part but I sure wish I had the code to debug this myself.
These issues seem to coincide with a rapid rise in network traffic most likely because of the iPad 2/iPhone support by Verizon. I wonder if this additional traffic load on the network is opening up timing holes in the software because of backoff and retry intervals for certain apps. Once again I suspect the email app especially because it is vulnerable to network traffic issues as it tries to get email account updates.
I could be wrong about my theory as to why the problem is happening. My solution seems to work. As far as pulling the battery and putting it near your AC in the car, that did NOT work for me at all. Leaving the phone out of its protective case also had no effect. Only screwing with the files on the SD card mattered.
    I hope this helps.

This problem has been seen for MONTHS now by people besides myself. My business partner is about to put a bullet in his phone because this has been happening for far longer than mine. I have little confidence in a fix anytime soon because this problem has been persistent for some time and there is a lot of denial in the field by Verizon. Verizon has to depend on HTC and Google besides themselves for fixes. How much would you like to wager on how this business relationship is working out? The first step in any solution is for a company to take some responsibility for it and so far no company has.

  • R.I.P Desktop Charging Cradle for the HTC Incredible

    Verizon, Is this true???
    http://htcpedia.com/news/htc-incredible-desktop-charging-cradle.html
People want a desktop charging cradle for their phones. Why can one not be produced? A lot of us purchased the phones under the assumption that a dock was being produced. Are you going to allow Incredible owners to exchange their device for Droid X's? You can't get any manufacture to produce a dock that can charge? I really don't think people care THAT much if the home screen doesn't auto rotate. If the clock application is launched it works fine in landscape or you mean a dock that works in portrait isn't possible?????

no doubt!!!! check this one for another device:
    http://www.fommy.com/view-full-page.asp?divid=HTC&cat=Cradles&skuno=80604
how difficult would it really be for them to just place the micro usb plug slightly lower to fit the inc? i love this cradle if the could duplicate it to fit the inc. it can't be that tough to do. and with minor tweaks you could lay it on it's side for landscape. it would be perfect....postrait AND landscape AND it has a slot underneath for an extra battery. the manufaturer would have a gold mine because they'd be the ONLY ones with anything to sell us!!!!

  • Why does FiOS give such a lousy router???

Using the cruddy Actiontec MI424-WR router that came from Verizon FiOS, I was getting 15/15 internet speeds over WiFi.  This was for the 50/25 plan I signed up for.  If I hardwired to the router I got 58/39.  So Verizon does deliver the speed they promise, but the router stinks big time.
I researched solutions online and saw all kinds of replies, with some saying due to the limitations of WiFi technology, there is nothing Verizon can do about the slow speeds over that connection.
Just to see, I turned off the wireless on my MI424-WR and hooked up an old Cisco E2500 that we brought us when we relocated from Japan with the military.  Now my WiFi speed is 58/38.
So, Verizon does deliver a great speed but then they limit themselves by using such an awful router.
    Why?

I have been getting absolutely horrible wifi speeds with this router. It's so bad that I can't even watch YouTube videos withut them pausing and buffering. Hard wired, my speeds are close to what is advertised, but I just did a couple speed tests on my wifi connected desktop, and was pretty constant at 3 to 4 Mbps download and upload but this is my latest. I feel like I'm back in the 80's and using dialup to connect to QLink!

  • Htc incredible's touchscreen fails inthe middle.

HTC Incredible's touchscreen works on the parameter of the screen but not in the middle.  A week ago it started with the letter " T " not responding....then the " Y "  a couple of days later failed to work.  Now, in all apps, the center of the screen does not respond.
Is the touch screen that fragile?   I have not dropped it or any other type of hard impact, as far as I can recall.  The devise worked great for the last six months, and I love the devise, but I hope it wasn't made with such fragility.
Is the touch screen breaking ?  or starting to fail ?   or is there a reset system to re-calibrate the touchscreen ?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,

        Hey AJS_OR!
We accept rants in all shapes and sizes around here so I'm extremely glad you posted. Based on your description of the issues at hand, it seems like there are quite a few things going on. Getting your phone into safe mode would be our best bet so as to isolate the issue to the device or potentially an application. May I ask if you tried this directly after running a factory reset (I noted that you said it won't process properly the first time you tried)? If you can try one final reset and then safe mode before loading your information this may help http://vz.to/ruJiUa .
Also, does your device have an extended warranty through insurance? If necessary, we'd love to get you a replacement before your upgrade comes up. And speaking of upgrade, if you're not too awful fond of large phones, you can view all our devices and their specifications at http://bit.ly/nD0WuY .

  • Headache with HTC Incredible

I have become flustered with the HTC Incredible. It has become so flaky that the battery will barely stay charged for 5 hours of standby time with everything minimized.
I was hoping to just go buy a replacement from the local Verizon store, however they are refusing to budge citing "contract" eligibility so I am stuck with a phone that is failing.
I had hoped to get things taken care of with Verizon, however their attitude seems to lay the blame on me but it is their provided equipment that has become an issue.
All I wanted to do is get another phone and even if it was a simple old flip phone I would have bought it but the store agents and even their so called on-line agents have their hands tied; yet they were given a supposed rating of being great by Consumer Reports. (I am giving them a flaming letter for that rating as Verizon has not wanted to help in any way.)
So this is one last try to perhaps someone in the Verizon Custer Center World, that can help. Can I get just a smple replacment phone or will I have to buy my own and replace it that way? If so, I might as well pay the early terminaton fee, cancel the service that you have not been providing very well and pay my money instead to AT&T.
Stephen in Atlanta with a DROID Headache

I am now a FORMER Verizon member after paying the ETF with much happiness. I decided after walking into the local Verizon store (company owned) that after the headachs and no action from the over the phone customer service that it was best to leave.
To this day I can not still figure out WHY I was being charged $173 a MONTH for the phone service I had. The store person could not figure that one out either and he offered to replace the Incrediable with the Incredible II.
As I had reached my limit with Verizon, I headed out of the store and headed for the APPLE store where I got me a ATT 4S which so far is holding to the predicted $75 month charge.
As for customer no service, that is pretty much a Verizon thing.... ATT, excellant communication and I can EVEN email them too directly.
    Have fun every one.

  • I've given up on the HTC Incredible

I thought maybe FROYO would make things better, but it didn't.  The HTC Incredible was a super everything-else-but-a-phone smart phone.  I just couldn't hear some folk who I talked to on the phone; they were usually on another cellphone. Sometimes words got dropped, or the sound quality as too shrill.  All landline calls, and bluetooth earpiece managed calls, were excellent (although reception inside buildings was not terrific).  But since most folks I know used cellphones, I couldn't take it anymore and had to give up.  I used one of the other upgrade plans in my family plan to get a Samsung Fascinate.  Its only has 2.1 but, as a phone, it is great.  I have no regrets dumping the Incredible other than the money that I wasted.  I even had to have the original Incredible I purchased replaced because of memory issues.
My RIM Blackberry Curve was probably the best phone I've ever owned, except that the internet experience was just awful. But as a  phone, nothing was as good...even the Samsung.

I feel the same about my former Blackberry Bold and 8800. Blackberry knows/knew how to build a good solid handset.

  • HTC Incredible 4g LTE

Excuse me, but where is the discussion forum for the HTC Droid Incredible 4g LTE?  I upgraded to this phone back in June.  Is there no one buying this phone?  I know there's basically no community development on it, because the ******** at Verizon Wireless re-locked the bootloader, even though they initially allowed it to be unlocked.  What gives?  Does no one care about this phone?
I feel like Verizon Wireless has a severe lemon on their hands with this phone.  Granted, spec-wise, it's not that horrible, but there are definitely issues with this handset.  Where the heck is the community for this phone?  I feel very alone having chosen this phone as my upgrade to the original HTC Incredible...

  • HTC Incredible stuck, Wont boot

I just got my phone literally 5 hours ago, I just got everything set up, contacts added, Etc, I go to plug it into my computer to put some music onto the phone and the phone just shuts off, I go to turn it on and it stays at the "HTC Incredible" screen, And just sits there, So I removed the battery, Soon as I put the battery back in, It jumps right back to that screen and sits there, I cant power down, no nothing, so i tried removing the battery, And putting it back in and hitting Power + Volume down, Tried every option there is.. Nothing, Just goes right back to the "HTC Incred." screen.. Unfortunately, Verizon was closed before I could get there, anyone know a fix, Or am I stuck taking it to the store tomorrow?
When I run the Simlock, It says 255: not key-card!!!

Here are a few options to try. First make sure your phone is disconnected from the computer.
Try to perform a battery pull when you see the "HTC Incredible" screen. If after powering up your device and you still get the "HTC Incredible" screen then try to perform a hard reset.
*Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.
Follow these steps to perform a hard reset:
Press and hold down the Power Key
    Touch Power OFF
    Touch OK
Press and hold the Volume down key then press the Power / End key.
When the HBOOT screen appears, release the keys.
Press the Volume key to select CLEAR STRORAGE then press the Power / End key.
If prompted with Do you want to start update?, press the Volume down key to choose No. When prompted, Do you want to reboot device? press the Volume down key to select No.
This boot process takes several moments, reference the progress bar located in the upper-right. If the device hangs or freezes, remove / replace the battery.
Press the Volume up key to select Yes.
Please let me know if this helps!

  • HTC Incredible powering off...

This is my first post here.  I have a Verizon HTC Incredible.  I've had it for about a year.  I noticed recently that it will power off on it's own.  For instance, I may open the internet and it will power off.  The battery may show it is 50% charged.  Also, I can plug it into my USB charger on the laptop.  I wait until the charging light is green and power it on.  During the time it is powering on, it gets to the point where it is just about finished and then the charging light goes orange and it powers off.  I am not sure what is going on here.  I was going to try to install the battery widget so I can monitor the battery temperature, but I can't get it fully powered on to install the widget.
    Thanks for any guidance..

    tmaxx,
I know how important it is to be able to use your device and still get reasonable battery life and consistent power!  I am here to assist you!
When did you start having these problems with the intermittent power?  Did you notice any changes just after downloading any specific applications or after a software update?  Is your battery/phone getting unusually hot to touch?  Answers to these questions can help me to determine if this is a battery, phone or software issue.
Let me know so I can further assist!

  • HTC Incredible phone locked up

I'm having all kinds of problems with my HTC Incredible phone but I'll be happy if someone could tell me how to restart my phone.  There was a update for Verizon App. icon, so I let it update, now it goes from this red eye picture to HTC quietly brilliant screen, then this screen with random words all over it. When I hold down the power button, nothing happens, wont shut off, wont restart nothing.

The screens you're describing are what I see when I restart: The Quietly Brilliant screen, the Droid eye, then the Droid words all over it ... this is the final screen until it boots up on its own. Are you saying it's not progressing past the Droid words screen? You're not touching the power button then, are you?
Try pulling the battery. Once you put it back in, let it start up on its own and see what happens. It takes a minute or two, so be patient. Post back and let me know what happens.

  • HTC Incredible Network issues?

I have only had issues with my HTC Incredible here and there. The issue is that sometimes I will not receive text messages or phone calls. There's one specific person I am having problems with and they have Sprint. They say that they called me and texted me and I have received nothing. This isn't the first time it has happened.  The day this happened, my phone sounded the notification sound of a message 3x but nothing was there. So I rebooted and it did it again but again, nothing.  Anyone out there know what could be the problem or help me fix it? It is really important that I stay connected to this person. Thanks!!

Thanks for the information Ann154. Your correct, the issue is more than likely with the other persons carrier. Additionally , it could also be a routing issue with your account if you have recently changed mobile numbers or ported your number in to Verizon Wireless from a different carrier.
I would have the other person check with their carrier first then if the issue continues, you can contact us to perform further trouble shooting.

  • HTC Incredible and future 4G network

Does any one know if the HTC Incredible will be compatible when Verizon's network upgrades to 4G?
Verizon has been installing fiber optic equipment in their cell sites, I think 4G is coming soon.

4G won't be for use on phones for 2 more years at the earliest and it won't be practically viable for 3.  It doesn't look like Verizon is going to worry about any intermediary systems like Wimax as Sprint did or HSPA+ like TMobile did (I think AT&T is still considering an HSPA+ system but as far as I know isn't committed to it yet). We would be on a Wimax system if we did go to an intermediary because it is a sort of expanded CDMA.  I imagine that Verizon being fairly comfortable right now on top and not likely to fall too far in the next 2-3 years is pretty comfortable with having a good stable fast 3G network that covers more area than any one else and is going to spend most of their system upgrade money on pushing LTE out here as quickly as possible while everyone else wastes money on intermediary technologies that so far are proving somewhat lackluster.
All that being said no the Incredible will not be able to take advantage of LTE or even Wimax should they for some reason decide to go that route.  3G will be supported probably for atleast another 5 to 10 years after that as probably will 2G.  Considering LTE is a considerably different technology I would wager probably more like 5 than 10 but it will depend on how long it will take for people to get rid of their older tech for newer.  I know people with borderline antique cell phones still operating.  One girl I know has a phone that can't send or recieve texts.  I barely remember the last phone I had that couldn't do that or even when that was last an option.  I felt like asking if she realized how often free phones were available.
So they will keep the system up for a while for late adopters but in all reality by the time you are replacing your incredible you probably still won't have an LTE option.  According to the current official timeline LTE will be available for smartphones first around the end of 2012 and only in major cities.  Late 2013 - Early 2014 for full blanketing.  Expect slightly longer time than that because of equipment shortages, and unexpected pitfalls.  We will all probably have at least one more phone on our new every 2 before whether or not it supports LTE is even a concern.
OK I take it back your next phone will probably be LTE.  By the end of this year they expect to have LTE rolled out to major cities.  The plan is by the end of this year to have modems running LTE on the network.  By early 2012 they plan to have doubled their coverage and start rolling phones out and they will effectively blanket the country by 2013.  So yeah hopefully your next smartphone will be LTE and we will be living it up.  Probably by then X86 chips will be the norm maybe even AMD will get in on the game and we will have 2Ghz phones or so, possibly even multicore.
