Very slow first backup...

A friend has a MacBook (C2D) and has just bought an iomega USB 2.0 external hard drive. Everything is plugged in and working its formatted (Journaled Case Sensitive(done automatically)), we have set Spotlight not to index the backup drive so we wouldn't encounter any problems.
Yet the first backup was started at 11pm last night (now 8:45 am) and it has only done 4GB of the 68GB it has to back up.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can speed this up???

Apple says that a Time Machine disk requires Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID formatting for Intel Macs and Apple Partition Map for PPC Macs. As complicated as the file structure is for Time Machine I would be inclined to take Apple at their word. Directions for properly formatting a Time Machine disk are here but people with PPC Macs should use Apple Partition Map instead of GUID.
Anti-virus software can slow Time Machine down so it should be disabled during at least the initial backup. It's also possible that Time Machine could be hanging on a corrupt file. Another possible source of slowdown is having a really large number of tiny files bunched up all together.

  • TC VERY SLOW with backup

Suddenly, TC is VERY SLOW with backup. In fact, I went in and discovered that it had not completed a backup since July 19th. I started one last night and when I checked this morning (about 10 hours later) it was 70MB into a 2GB backup. An hour and a half later it was at 100MB and an hour after that it was at 125MB. At this rate, it's going to take a couple of days so I cancelled the backup (it then went into it's housekeeping routine of "cleaning up"). BTW, I had quit all applications before I started the backup and TC said I had 454GB of free space. I'm not running any AV software and I have OS 10.6.8 I'm on an Ethernet network to the TC (I also have Airport active - could that be an issue? It never was in the past)
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

So...I may have panicked when I saw all of those empty folders in my Document folder...however, when stopping the backup to TC (the 'cleaning up' process of stopping took more than 2 hours), my folder contents showed up. I guess that process takes the file index pointers offline or something so I couldn't see file contents during the process. I then did a permissions repair and a verify on my hard drive.
But the bad news is that my Time Machine is still showing EMPTY! I currently running disc utility 'verify' on my TM backup volume (it says the projected time to complete is 3 days!!!) The disc utility says that there are 4,000,000 files in the backup volume - I just can't see them. When I ran Time Machine, it only has 'today' - no prior backups - even though Time Machine Preferences reports that the oldest backup is August 1, 2010 (one year ago) and that the last backup was July 19, 2011. They are not there.
I've seen some other posts like this, so I don't think I'm alone with this problem.
The good news is that all of my folders and files on my computer appear to be intact. The bad news is that previous Time Machine backups are not there (or they can't be seen - even though the 1TB backup volume is in fact half full).

  • Time Capsule external drive very slow for backup

I am experiencing very, very slow backup times using an external drive attached to my Time Capsule. When I recently added a 3 TB Rocstor external drive to my mid-2011 iMac using FireWire, I included it in the drives to be backed up. The internal 2 TB of storage in my Time Capsule was no longer enough, so I plugged a 4 TB WD My Book Studio drive into the Time Capsule's USB 2.0 port and specified this WD drive as the only backup storage. The first backup took almost 48 hours. Now the Time Machine keeps trying to back up about 400 GB - 500 GB (though there haven't been any changes) and is transferring about 400 KB/sec over Ethernet from my iMac to the Time Capsule's external drive. What am I doing wrong? (I recently upgraded the iMac to OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.)

Frankly, I have no way to gauge your network setup, so I can't really tell you what you should expect. I can tell you from my own experiences using a local network based on a 3rd Gen. Gigabit Ethernet AEBS that using Ethernet the average throughput (not interface) was in the neighborhood of 16-20 MBs/sec. The average throughput for a USB 2.0 drive connected directly was about the same.
This works out to an average throughput of around 60 GBs/hour. Depending upon file sizes and number of files being transferred a USB 2.0 drive might reach 100 GBs/hour, but that is a rare outcome. The USB 2.0 drive interface speed is about the same as FireWire 400 - 400 Mb/s or roughly 50 MBs/sec. This is what I know from measurement. Do not expect Ethernet to be any faster for throughput.

  • 3.0 creeping slow first backup?

I have waited two hours for my second generation Touch with the new update to do it's first backup; I "Xed" out of it. Everything is there and working. But when I try to do another backup; same thing; just creeping along very slow for a back-up. Anyone have a suggestion here?? Thanks. Paula

i've tried resyncing the touch sooo many times. I'm just leaving it this time hoping to let it sync (although there was time I exited the backup and it continued to sync calendars... only it wanted to change my 75+ calendar entries on my outlook!)
PS: I've reseted the ipod inbetween and it's still crawling. sometimes 1/3 others 1/2 way through right now it stuck at 80%! the closest so far (the funny thing is that this time round it sped all the way to that point then stopped).
I wanna go for a run with my ipod touch
(Seriously Apple, after all the hoopla of how great 3.0 was going to be everything seemed to be delivered at 80% - bluetooth with only AD2P support - no headsets, no AVRCP?) geez lets see if i can sync the darn thing

  • Time Machine very slow when backup disk almost full

My Time Machine backups on a Time Capsule (first generation, 1 TB) have become extremely slow recently. The disk is almost full, but I don't think that should be a problem as Time Machine deletes the oldest backups by itself. It has been, so I don't think that in itself should cause a problem.
This becomes particularly annoying because whenever backups are going on, the system doesn't allow me to access the "Open" or "Save" dialogues - probably because it wants to check the Time Machine disk, but can't, or only can very slowly. Whenever I do this, the app in question just freezes.
Anyone else has this problem, and does anyone know a fix? I don't want to start a new backup if I can avoid it.

    Florian M. wrote:
Thank you. Did that, and it seems to be working now - though it actually seemed to have got better even before I ran Disk Utility. Before, even rebooting didn't help.
Yes, if there's a problem inside he sparse bundle, rebooting (the Mac and/or TC) won't help.
Time Machine is a great technology, but it seems to have strange quirks sometimes
    It does indeed!
    Once again, thank you.
You're quite welcome, and thanks for the star!

  • Webutil_host very slow first time.

I use a very simple comand
    WEBUTIL_HOST.NONBLOCKING(COMANDO)
    where COMANDO is
    COMANDO := 'CMD /C "'||FILE_NAME||'"' ;
and FILE_NAME contains the name of a .xls Excell file.
It works fine but first time I execute it it takes more than 5 minutes to open the Excell file.
From the second on it appears after 20 secs.
I tried to open Excel by hands before I execute the command but nothing changed.
How can I solve that issue ?
    Tks
    Tullio

Can you explain what you mean by this statement:
I tried to open Excel by hands before I execute the command but nothing changedWhat do you mean by hand? Do you mean you try opening the file using excel application on client machine? If so, how fast did it load first time on client machine?

  • TC very slow to backup

My TC hasn't completed a backup for weeks. It takes approx. 2hrs "Preparing Backup" then starts the backup which goes very slowly. In the past 24hrs it has backed up 400Mb out of 2.3Gb. The TC is connected to the Mac via ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Nice to hear that my experience is not the only one like this. It really does seems like the TC could use a little work.
One example: after I managed to get a full backup onto my TC (which took a while), I was away from the TC for a week or two. When I got back, it decided it needed to do a 'full hierarchy traversal' (according to the logs; the TM dialog only ever says 'preparing') –- days of spinning TC. Then more days of transferring data (even when using a wired connection). Half the time, the TC gets grumpy and says it is not available for no comprehensible reason. And when TM itself is running (seems like all the time), it eats up a fair chunk of processor power (on the computer being backed up).
On the plus side, last year, I did manage to recover a whole external drive that was KIA, but backup up to the TC. True, if I didn't have the TC, I would have had some other solution, but I do have to give it credit for that save.

  • Very slow first connection with Oracle.DataAccess 4.112.1.2

Hello, I'm having some troubles with connecting using Oracle DataAccess component. In particular, when using .Net 4 Framework, the first connection to the database takes about 20-25 seconds!
    Here's my setup:
    - Web server running 64-bit Windows Web Server 2008 SP2 with IIS 7.0
    - Oracle server running 64-bit Windows Server Standard 2008 SP2 with Oracle 11g
The version of ODAC component is 2.112.1.2 / 4.112.1.2
The first strange thing is that, when I set an application on .NET 4 in IIS, I need to "Enable 32-bit Application" in order for it to work.
I made some tests with a very simple query: "SELECT 1 FROM dual" and here's the results:
    - Classic ASP (ADODB.Connection): a fraction of a second to connect
    - .NET 2 with System.Data.OracleClient: a fraction of a second to connect
    - .NET 4 with Oracle.DataAccess: 20-25 seconds
Moreover, if I launch the first connection thru Classic ASP, then the .NET 4 connection is very fast, as it happen in any case from the second connection on...
This way, I excluded the problem is in the connection string, since it's always pretty much the same. I also excluded it could be a TNS problem, since they all use the same TNS (I think).
That's all I've come up with, and I'm not a big Oracle expert so I hope someone here can help me sorting the situation out!
    Thanks,
    Stefano

    Thanks for your reply.
I already tried messing around with that parameter.
At the moment, it was set as:
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE)
I commented it and nothing changed.
    Thanks anyway :)

  • Very slow first Mobile Service call after one minute incativity

My mobile service api (basic tire) response about 30 sec delay for the first call. The subsequent calls are fine but the first call even sometimes times out. Which is totally unacceptable. The worse is that after one minutes inactivity it stars again.
It uses SQL Server (Standard tire) which is the culprit I guess. Because if I do a manual db query before
the time lag of the api call disappear. I set up automated api calls  requesting db quires in about every minutes but did not helped. Looks like they are screened.
What should I do until I have enough customers to get an api call every minutes?
It's a quite important issue because due to the bad user experience the app will never have enough customers.

I have done a lot of testing to gain more accurate data about the case. It's quite time consuming because I have to wait some minutes after each testing. I focused this time only one of my stored procedure and measured it from the app, from browser and from
VS SQL Server and turned out I was wrong there is a similar significant time lag from all method and if I wait enough about half an hour in all method the stored procedure call will time out. Thus, the underlying issue is probably in SQL Server.
The VS SQL Server provides the following error massage:
Msg 4083, Level 16, State 1, Procedure likingProbability, Line 51
The connection was recovered and rowcount in the first query is not available. Please execute another query to get a valid rowcount.
The actual rowcount in the code:
    SELECT @howGood = howGood FROM goodforme.Scans WHERE itemId = @itemId AND userId = @userId
    IF (@@ROWCOUNT > 0 AND (@howGood = @MAX_RATE OR @howGood = @MIN_RATE))
    BEGIN
    SET @howGoodPrediction = @howGood
    RETURN
    END
For me it looks like the rowcount should be valid.
In the second call the response is valid but with huge delay like 20 sec, but in the subsequent calls it's linearly reduced to about 1 sec. And if the next call happens about 30 sec later the response will have increase again to about 10 sec time lag and so
on. Thank you for helping to solve the issue.

  • Very slow first instal of Win7 on Satellite L875-126

the installation of windows 7 is begin since at least 2 hour and is now just at the network instalation (since 30 minutes and not finished). I assume that this laptop has a problem.
Can anyone tell me if the same problem occured to him?

When you start notebook for the first time recovery image must be installed. This can take up to 2,5 hours so, in my opinion there is no problem at all.
Just be patient and wait until OS installation ends properly. Do not interrupt it.
Please create recovery disc as soon as possible and do not make some experiments before you have created this disc.

  • SQL loader load data very slow...

    Hi,
On my production server have issue of insert. Regular SQL loder load file, it take more time for insert the data in database.
First 2 and 3 hours one file take 8 to 10 seconds after that it take 5 minutes.
As per my understanding OS I/O is very slow, First 3 hours DB buffer is free and insert data in buffer normal.
But when buffer is fill then going for buffer waits and then insert is slow on. If it rite please tell me how to increase I/O.

  • Mac suddenly very slow

All of a sudden my mac started running very slow.
first i opened activity-monitor to see what was wrong. I didnt see any unusual ram-usage. But the kernel_task had a CPU-time of 32 000. I cant seem to find any other explenation for why this is happening.
when i try to use my computer pretty much every task takes ages. Everything from doing stuff on the internet to browsing around in finder. Im also having trouble starting up my computer, i have to hold in the power button very long for it to respond. It also turns itself of without any reason.
Whats weird though is that my computer still manages to run movies in VLC smoothly.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 : very slow startup

    Hi
Here is a description of my problem:
    I boot my machine.
    I start Photoshop Elements 11.
It takes a very long time to get ready ( loading color settings and workshop modes )
I close Photoshop Elements 11 when I am done with my project.
All subsequent startups of Photoshop Elements 11 are very fast.
    My question
How can I avoid the very slow FIRST startup of Photoshop Elements 11 ?
Can I pre-load the needed services (or whatever) when I boot my machine or when I login to my user account ?
Thank you in advance for your help

Thank you very much, Pat, for your great help.   The link has inspired me to download the trial version from the Adobe website and go from there:
"Adobe Download Assistant" was automatically downloaded before the download of the trial version began.  With the "Adobe Download Assistant" up and running, the download of the trial version took within 30 minutes.  I then got to enter the serial code of my already purchased PSE 12 right after installation of the trial version and completed the whole set-up process (without even opening or using the trial version at all).
It is rather counter-intuitive that one should start with a trial download even when he has gone straight into buying the product.  It was as if the trial version was a bridge to facilitate the official download because the trial version provided the "Adobe Download Assistant".  Maybe, it is expected that people would always take a trial before buying?  Or maybe, it is expected that most people would already have the "Adobe Download Assistant" handy?
Anyway, I am glad there is a solution.  In this case, I think the key is to get the "Adobe Download Assistant" which comes with the trial version.  Hope this post will help others who might face the same issue too.

im new to mac book...in the start few weeks mac book was very fine i love it...but as time passed its getting slower & slower.what should i do.it has updated software MAC OS X 10.7.4 but still very slow.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
