Video Level Shift During Edit To Tape

I have a program that was originated in 720p-24 using the Panasonic HDX-200. During the color correction process, I adjusted the output video levels and saturation. I also added the 'Broadcast Safe' clamping filter. When I play the video back in the suite, everything's legal.
But when I edit to tape... the video levels are back up above 100 IRE. Am I missing a setting somewhere?

  • My FCP pro crashes frequently during edit to tape.  It's frustrating.

MY FCP pro crashes frequently in the middle of edit to tape.  I have 8 gigs of ram and the quad core processor.  Do I need to add more ram or what?  I get the "disc is too slow" message or whatever.  Any suggestions?

Sorry about that.  Forgot there was an X.  Will move to other forum.  Also, that's means I can't upgrade to X if there isn't an edit to tape!

  • Print to video vs. edit to tape

what is the preferred format? i've been using print to video
but i hear edit to tape is a lot better.
did a search but not much came up.
    any comments?

Print to video just outputs the timeline to tape...to possibility of timecode lock. It preps the cut then prompts you to press record.
Edit to Tape gives deck control. And it allows for locking the deck to output to your timelines timecode...with the show starting at hour 1;00;00;00.

  • Is edit to tape possible with a HDV timeline?

    Hi all,
I´m working with Final Cut 5.1 and I´m trying to export my HDV timeline to a HDV recorder(Sony HVR-M10E). Print to video is working but edit to tape not.
is it possible to edit to tape with HDV? If not is there any workaround for frameaccurate editing to tape.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks, Carmen

    nope...
The work around is to export your sequence as a DVCPROHD QT movie (using the same frame rate), then edit that to tape.

  • Color shift during video capture (moved from Nseri...

I have noticed that the video camera in my n79 is very sensitive to changes in light.  Often I get a major color shift during a video capture seemingly for no reason, especially when shooting outside.  Is this a defect or should I use a particular setting for video? Current settings are:
    quality: High(TV);
    scene mode:Auto;
    video light: off(shooting video outside during day);
    white balance: Automatic (this MIGHT be the culprit?);
    Color tone:Normal.
Two stills from the same video are attached; the second, a few seconds later, is unnaturally vivid (almost day-glo!).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Wow, what a quick reply!
Delivery was going to be Quicktime HD and probably downconvering to SD MPEG2 for a DVD. I was just going to edit in HDV, since I'm not doing anything fancy, just to try it out as a workflow option (and previews for the client). The first couple of projects I've started on my Macbook Pro though have had this hue shift (I can post an example on-line if need be by filming my monitor...) It's not inherent in the actual captured QT file, just when being played back in FCP. When I export out of FCP the QT file looks great as well. I've never had this problem on my G5 tower with HDV from the same camera or captured the same way. I'm worried that it's the univeral copy of FCP or even worse, my Macbook!
    Make sense?
    Thanks

  • Having trouble with audio edit to tape, print to video ok

Hi all, please go easy on me, this is my first post.
I am having difficulty getting audio on to tape via 'edit to tape'.
The hardware is blackmagic decklink extreme, feeding component video and analoge audio to a UVW-1800P.
I can do a print to video on a crash record and the audio works that way, but edit to tape does not.
I have tried both deck link and built in audio in the audio settings and the FCP a/v settings, seperate and ganged output settings, I have set the insert settings to 2 channel Sony, reloaded the decklink drivers.
The irritating thing is the audio is there whilst cutting, but as soon as I try edit to tape there is complete silence. The important thing is that it worked a few weeks back but does not now, it must be a setting?
Thanks in advance for your help.
This machine I am working with this week is an Intel MacPro running FCP 5.1.2 and Mac OS 10.4.8

I had this same problem and this resolved it for me:
-Go to your "Settings" icon and click on the "General" tab.
-About 2/3 way down the page you will see "Use side switch to:" - make sure "mute" is checked rather than "lock rotation."
-Then make sure the side switch, located next to the volume toggle switch on the side of your ipad, is moved to the right (no red dot showing).
My audio worked fine in embedded videos after I did those two things.  Hope it works for you.

  • Which is higher quality, edit to tape or print to video on digital betacam?

Which is gives higher quality results, edit to tape or print to video on digital betacam?

They should be the same quality.
Edit to tape will allow you control over making sure your program starts at 01:00:00;00.
Neither will send your timecode from the timeline. Edit to tape allows you to assemble your program starting at an in point set on your tape.

I am not really sure how to set the camera in this VTR mode... I have tried in the settings to set it in webcam mode... and I have tried without... and I dont have a button or setting called VTR, only a *PLAY' option or a 'FILMØ option....
My A/V settings are FireWire PAL and DA PAL 48khz ... however have no ide what that means or if these should be changed...?
I checked from apple but cannot find my DV cam on the list... hmm, does that mean I cannot do edit to tape recordings???

I use the version FCP 2
Please help me out, I am really without any good suggestions how to proceed!

You're going to have to use a dvd authoring program. Burning the seq to a dvd qill just create a qt movie on a dvd data disc. It won't create a dvd video disc that plays in a dvd player.
Export from fcp a QT movie, current settings, self-contained. Use Anamorphicizer (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/Anamorphicizer.shtml) to make imovie recognise it as 16:9. Then import that file to idvd.
Or you can drop your 16:9 sequence into a new 4:3 sequence to letterbox it, then you can do the export as above but skip the anamorphicizer step.
It's better to use compressor on the original 16:9 sequence and then use dvdsp to author, but if you've never used dvdsp it's a big program to get your head round.
    The export can be done in two ways;
    1. Export from fcp using 'export using compressor'.
    2. Export a QT ref/self-contained movie and import that into compressor.
    3. Export a QT movie and import it direct into DVDSP.
The second option will take longer initially (if you use the self-contained option) but will then allow compressor to work in the background, the first option will tie up fcp for the duration of the encode.
Once in compressor use one of the 16:9 dvd presets, depending on the duration of the movie and the quality you want. Don't try to adjust the settings. If your movie is 31 mins just use the shortest option (i think it's 60min) and make sure you select the m2v video and ac3 audio options. If you just select the mpeg 2 video you'll only get video, as you've discovered.
Open dvdsp and create your opening menu and a video track, import the movie file, add it to the video track, and then add the audio to the track as well. Then add any chapter submenus you may want.

  • HV20 and Print to Video or Edit to Tape?

Has anyone figured out the workflow for final cut pro and getting video back out to tape using
    "print to video"
    or
    "edit to tape"
with "edit to tape" I get an "unable to initialize" error where it tells me to check the audio/video settings.
    with "print to video"
I'm using the record/pause function from page 71 of the manual, but the hv20 doesn't see to see a signal. Also the playback on the mac is interesting. it's in the middle of the screen, and not showing the full resolution..
basically I'm just trying to dub an hdv tape.
    thanks!
    -Josh

ok, the only things listed in the audio/video settings are the ntsc and pal firewire devices.
when I try to set it to hdv 1080i60 firewire basic, I get the error:
unable to locate the following external devices:
    HDV (1440 x 1080) 60i
but the camera is both connected... and on. Is there a reason it would see the camera as an SD device instead of a HD device?

I have a family video DVD that was originally on tape, but is now on disc. I want to import it onto my MacBook to edit and store. However the files are IFO, BUP and VOB and the Mac is saying 'unable to import' as it doesn't recognise the file. Help please !!!!!

Those are the constituent parts of a standard mpeg2 DVD. Storing them is easy: just copy the folder to your hard drive and they will play in DVD player or VLC.
But that format is not intended for editing. To do so:
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Edited on MacPro, needs to Write Video to Edit-to-Tape on PowerMac G5?

Anyone else run into this issue?
I edit programs for broadcast on my MacPro at home (same version & settings as Final Cut software on systems at the office). Everything right up through rendering is done on my home system.
I bring it in via G-raid(firewire800) to one of the office systems with decks for printing, both of which are PowerMac G5s.
Open project - timelines look/play rendered as they did when I finished them at home.
Edit to Tape - after I drag/drop the sequence to Insert in the Edit-to-Tape window, Final Cut then proceeds to "write video" for at least 45 minutes as if it's re-rendering the entire sequence.
Through a TON of elimination & troubleshooting, we discovered this error is consistent when our other MacPro in the office gets the same result when an edited/rendered sequence from it is brought over to the G5s.
    What are your thoughts?

I have often found that the rendering FCP needs to do just before an Edit to Tape to be very inconstient. I wonder if it could be writing the render to a different drive on the MacPro other that the G-Raid. I also wonder if it might be rendering to RAM for output.... I've never heard of this so it's just a theory. Do you do a Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown? Might try that. Also do a forum search for "Edit to Tape" as there are many topics on the subject.
    And welcome to the forum.

  • Edit to tape - Writing Video

What is Final Cut Pro doing when I initiate an "Edit to Tape" session? It can take a very long time to prepare the video for a layoff, expecially a long project. How can I speed up this workflow issue? Is it unavoidable?

    What format of material?
If HDV, FCP must conform the material back into a continuous 15 frame GOP. This is very computationally intensive.
Other formats - make sure the sequence is fully rendered.

  • Video shift during dissolve

I'm working on a video and I have taken a couple clips and squeezed them down so that they are within the title safe makers... so video with a black box is what it looks like after being shrunk/squeezed down. When I add a dissolve in between the two similar squeezed clips I get a video shift during the disolve.
If I drop the same clips without squeezing them down and add a dissolve it looks just fine.
Why do I get a video shift during the dissolve when the clips have been squeezed down? and how can I fix the problem of getting a good dissolve with a squeezed down look without making still images out of them?

From your description it sounds like your clips are different sizes.
Double click each clip individually and then click on the Motion tab in the viewer.
For what you're trying to achieve you probably want make sure they are both at an 80% scale
