Virtual machine accessible only from host

Hi,
I installed Oracle Server 2.2, created a new VM from an Oracle template managed by Oracle VM Managaer 2.2. Everything is working fine.
Except that my new VM is accessible only from the host.
Once I'm connected on the host, I can use ssh <vm_ip_address> or ping <vm_ip_address>, but nowhere else.
And also, from the VM, I cannot see anything else than the host from the network.
Does someone got any idea what could be the reason ?
Please, do not hesitate if you have question for clarification.
Thanks.

Hi Avi,
Thanks for reposnding, please find the output below.

  • Virtual machine VHD file is missing the "Virtual Machine" Security group from ACL

    Hey All,
Doing support work for a client and they are unable to take snapshots from certain vm's. I think this is down the VM not having the virtual machines security group within its ACL instead is seems to just have two GUIDs. to me if looks like the vm's have
been moved and imported or something like that but was obviously not done correctly.
When taking a snapshot they get a general access denied error
Does anyone know a quick way to add the virtual machines security group back into the ACL, I did find some powershell commands however this errored stating I could not change the owner of the group.
I'll keep looking but if someone knows a quick fix for this I would appreciate it. One other thing I had thought of was turning the vm off, The creating a new Virtual machine and attaching the VHD as the new VM? Would this work?
    thanks in advanced

    Hi Dunn2010,
Yes , please try to copy the VHD then create a new virtual machine and attach the replication .
If it is possible please try to find the relevant Error messege of your question in event log and post it here .
Any further information please feel free to let us know.

  • Virtual Machine Loaded on Different Hosts

    Hi,
I was wondering if it would be possible to create a virtual PC using Microsoft's Hyper V that could be used on two different hosts?  My idea would be to shut down the virtual PC on my physical PC, when I am done using it.  Then, my coworker would
open up the virtual PC on his physical PC use it.  I am somewhat new to virtual PC's and don't even know if this could be done.

You have opportunity to start replication from the first PC to second PC.
All your changes copy to second PC, but changes dont copy back.

  • How to transfer files from virtual machine to host machine

    Hello,
I want to know how to copy files from virtual machine o host machine while the virtual machine running. I can't share files from virtual machine because i am just studying for mcsa in company computer. I can't connect my virtual machine to same network so
i'm using a different ip range and i created a internal network switch for my virtual machines in hyper-v. Please give me a best solution for my studies.
    Regards,
    Ashane Deshapriya.
    Ashane Deshapriya ( MCP )

    Finally I got the solution...
Here is how you can share files between a Hyper-V host and any virtual machines running on that host.
If you've used Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Virtual Server, you'll have enjoyed the fact that you can copy and paste between a virtual machine and those platforms. This doesn’t work with Hyper-V however—you can't copy/paste between a VM and the Hyper-V
    host.
The workaround is to do the following:
    1. On your Hyper-V host, create a shared folder and assign Change permission to Everyone.
    2. On the virtual machine running on the host, open the Network and Sharing Center and enable File and Printer Sharing.
    3. On the virtual machine, click Start and type \\host_name\share_name where host_name is the name of your Hyper-V host and share_name is the name of the share you created.
    4. Press ENTER and an Explorer window will open in the VM showing the contents of the shared folder on the host.
    5. You can now copy files from the VM to the host and vice versa as needed.
    Regards.

    Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 Hyper-V host
HP DL370 G6, HP NC375i integrated Quad Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter
Static IP (.11), internet connection via a Cisco switch and PIX firewall
External virtual network connected to port 1, allowing management OS to share the network adapter
    Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 guest
Static IP (.21) on the same subnet, same subnet mask and default gateway (.1) as host
    * with Virtual Machine Bus network adapter:
     - host can ping guest (.21), switch (.5), and has internet access
     - guest can ping host (.11), but cannot ping switch (.5) and has no internet access.
     - network map shows the guest and host connected via a hub (Microsoft virtual switch), connected to a gateway, then a red X between gateway and internet
    * with Legacy network adapter:
     - host can ping guest (.21), switch (.5), and has internet access
     - guest can ping host (.11), switch (.5) and has internet access.
     - network map shows the guest and host connected via a hub (Microsoft virtual switch), connected to a gateway, and no red X between gateway and internet
I installed Hyper-V before adding the HP network drivers (there's a known problem if you install Hyper-V after adding the network drivers), so that's not it.
This happens both with straight network adapters, and also when two are configured as a network team - no difference.
I don't want to use the Legacy network adapter as the performance is terrible, but right now I have no choice as otherwise I can't get network or internet access from the guest.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Please refer to the following post to see whether you can resolve the issue.
Network Adapter (not Legacy) does not work on Virtual Machine after installation through ISO

    Hi,
I'm facing issue in adding Space to the existing Virtual Machine (Guest OS) from added repository.
    Environment details :
    VM Server : /OVS => 130GB
    /OVS/935970F2CC2D4B4391701397517F1001/ => 512 GB
    Things I have done :
    •     I created a VM (Guest OS) in the VM Server with 120 GB
    •     After creating the VM (Guest OS) , When I tried adding a VIRTUAL DISK of size 150 GB , I got an error “Maximum available Disk space is only 10GB”.
    My query :
    •     Will I be able to add space to Existing VM from the added Repository ( /OVS/935970F2CC2D4B4391701397517F1001/ ) , whose system.img is stored in path /OVS/running_pool/34_rhel/ .
Kindly help me out in this.
    Thanks in advance.
    -- Sri

    Hi all,
I checked with Oracle on the above and got the info currently , the we can utilise only the space available in the existing repo and cannot extend to additional repo.
Work around is : Clone it to the other repo , or Use Symbolic link .
    Thanks,
    Sri.

Install your client products, including the oracle client, on your host os.
Create a tnsames file that has an entry for the database on our virtual server.
Just like a real server, your vm must have a fixed IP address so that client processes will know how to find it.

  • How to boot from SCSI in Virtual Machine

    hi
i have VM's in Hyper V windows server 2012 data center edition.
i want to boot from SCSI drive for performance enhancement.
but when i select scsi then it doesnt boot and says boot failure no boot device found.
also tried with bios settings of VM but there is no option to select boot from SCSI.
so can anyone help me how to make it happen???
how to boot from SCSI drive in VM???
    thnx
    istiaq

Generation 1 virtual machines cannot boot from the virtual SCSI chain and 2012 does not support Generation 2 VMs. There is no meaningful performance difference between the virtual IDE and SCSI controllers anyway.

  • Manually Moving VMS from HOST to HOST *WITH* Shared SAS Storage

    Hi,
    Environment will be 2 Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers.
They will be connect via shared SAS.  These are two identical IBM servers with shared SAS storage
I am hoping to eliminate using MS Clustering of the Hyper-V servers just to keep things straight forward.
In the event, I had a complete failure of one of the  physical server Hyper V hosts, I was hoping be able to manually add/import (not sure what the terminology is here) and run the virtual machines on the second host until the first is repaired.
If there is third party software that can do this, I would entertain it.
In VMware (I had two hosts and would manually remove them from inventory on one server and add them to a second server).
Ideally, if I could keep both Hyper-V hosts in a Windows Workgroup and as vanilla as possible.
    Thanks in Advance,
    G

    Hi,
Sorry for the late reply.  I have been researching all I can. And thanks to all for your patience and help!
Let's start with the hardware to help paint the picture:
    2 @ IBM X3550 M4
    1 @ IBM V3700
The two X3550's are going to be connected via 6GB SAS Cards (2/server for redundacy)
Current environment (residing on VMWare with older IBM Xseries servers DS3524 connect via SAS connections)  40 users total.
    Windows servers are:
    1 @ SBS 2011 (One and only AD/PDC)
2 @ Windows 2008 Servers that are CRM (these are Windows Member Servers)
5 @ Windows 2003 servers that are going to be replace with Windows 2008 Servers (these are Windows Member servers) (low usage servers)
    Just to recap:
The current environment running VMware 4.1 has both IBM X3500 servers able to see a  single 1.5 TB lun (SAS connected) presented by the DS3524.
Currently, in VMware, I can see the same LUN on both servers.  I have all my VM's on HOSTA, if HOSTA should suffer a system board failure, I manually connect to HOSTB with the VMware client and add the VMs that I can see on the shared LUN
    and add them to HOSTB.
My understanding is that its strongly recommend that my DC (not sure if they are implying PDC or BDC) on a physical server.  My hesitation is now I have to introduce a DC to SBS 2011 and manage a physical server and deal with with SBS 2011's quirks.
So I was hoping that if I presented a LUN to both my HyperV hosts (In a Workgroup), and created on my VMs on hostA, if something went very bad with HOSTA,  I could connect to HOSTB and "Import" them and manually start the VMs, especially since
    SBS 2011 is sensitive.
The client is okay with some downtime, so if the process is supported and works, then I am okay with doing the work.
Clustering or even Replicas will add:
    Complexity to the environment
Patching needs to be carefully planned as it would not look good to have to failover due to a Windows update on the primary host.
The tech's that support that environment will now need to know about Clustering and/or Replication ontop of the SAN stuff
I am looking at Veeam, Double-Take to see if they can work with 2 @ 2012 Hyper-V hosts configured in a Workgroup.
The SBS 2011 is the "hinge" that will make or break the success of this project.  I personally love the way 2012 Hyper-V works, but it would be great if a physical server outside of the HyperV hosts was not required.
    Thanks !

  • Mouse not working in Virtual machine (win2k3 32 and 64 bit) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies

I have installed two virtual machines(win2k3 32bit and win2k3 64bit ) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies (Beta) enterprise. Mouse is getting lost inside VM (using CTRL+ ATL +  LEFT ARROW  comes mouse control control in host OS).
Is there any setting to make mouse works? Insert Integration Serice setup Disk operation succeeds.

     all credits for mike_something
The problem is that the old mousedriver is hooked to the mouse device class.
To remove this dependency, go into the registry and navigate to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Remove the value msvmmouf from the UpperFilters Regvalue.
    Reboot....
    tadaaa!!
If you wish you can take out the drivers completely by deleting these registry hives completely :
    The driver:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\msvmmouf
    The Service:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VPCMap
The CopyHook Shell Extension: ( for folder access )
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{30C14BA C-122C-42ED-B319-1139DBF48EB8}\InProcServer32
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\CopyHookHandle rs\VPCCopyHook
After a reboot you can delete the "Virtual Machine Additions" folder from program files...
    Good Luck!

  • Oracle 9i in a Virtual Machine

    Hello,
I installed Oracle 9i together with win2003 into a virtual machine (MS Virtual PC). The Database is working fine. The problem is, that I can't connect to Database in sql-plus from the PC who's hosting the virtual machine.
First it gave me the following errormessage: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified (I hope the text is right, my database is in german)
After setting oracle_sid=<sid> it gave me this one: ORA-12560: TNS: Error within Protocoladapter (freely translated ;)
    Any hint's?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Virtual Machines lose access to network

We have continual problems with losing network connectivity to the virtual machines hosted on a Hyper-V host (the host is running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2), it goes down 2 – 3 times per week.
    Situation:
All 3 Windows 2008 R2 virtual machines on the host lose connectivity to the outside world at the same random time (they are the only 3 on the host).
When this occurs the host can still ping the 3 virtual machines and the host is reachable.
When this occurs the 3 virtual machines can ping the host and each other, but nothing else outside of the host (request timed out followed by destination host unreachable)
Nothing in the hardware or Windows event logs on the host indicates there is a problem. No indications of issues in the VM event logs either.
Restarting the virtual machines does not fix the issue
Brand new HP hardware, Broadcom nic drivers were upated early on
VMQ is disabled on the VM's
We are not using nic teaming or clustering
Restarting the host temporarily resolves the problem (during the restart the vms are just placed in a saved state).
The host is running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2
The switch ports that the 2 network cables are plugged into (1 for RDP access to host and 1 for the VM traffic) show no errors on the switch.
This sounds like an issue with the Virtual switch but I can't find anything in the logs that gives me a hint.

Thank you for this post.  I have had similar issues with the following configuration
5 Node Fail Over Cluster - 5 HP DL580-G7 Servers
    Two NIC Teams Configured
4 1 GBPS NIC's - Two Native to the integrated 4 Port on the mother board and Two in an expansion card
    - The Integrated NICS are HP NC 375 I (Two ports are 1 GPBS and Two are 10 GBPS)
    - The expansion NICS are HP 332T adapters
All four of the 1 GBPS NICS are teamed - this is the team the Virtual Switch for all the VM's is using
Both of the 10 GBPS NICS are teamed
The Load Balancing for both teams is set to switch independent and dynamic
Only two of the hosts are experiencing issues with the Guest VM's losing connection
The OS is Server 2012R2 Data Center Full Install
All recommended hot fixes and updates for a fail over cluster have been applied
All HP Firmware Updates have been applied (Current Through June 2014)
Setting the VMQ to disabled appears to have resolved this issue for me, I will continue to monitor until I am comfortable moving production Guests back to the affected Hyper-V Hosts.
I noted while attempting to set the VMQ to disable that only the 332T Adapters were set to true in the first place

  • Time was not correct on dc which is hyper-v virtual machine

    My enviroment:
    1 physical server dell R720

    OS: Windows 2008 R2 SP1
    Domain: join to domain xx.com
    1 virtual machine
    Role: DC+DNS+DHCP
    OS: Windows 2008 R2 SP1
    Domain: xx.com (olny one dc)
    Located on: this hyper-v host
    Issue:
I found time of virtual machine (this only one dc) was slower than current time. At that moment, time on host machine also slower, and same as dc. When I manual adjust this time to correct. It would go wrong again.
Considering time sync rule of domain and hyper-v, I just unchecked 'Time Synchoniation' on hyper-v intergrate services. Howerver time was slower again after few days.
Could it be possible wrong on hyper-v host which join to domain??
So could you give me some suggestion for this? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You should not need to disable Hyper-V time synchronization in order to use a different time synchronization source.
" if you are running a Domain Controller inside a virtual machine I would recommend that you leave Hyper-V time synchronization enabled but that you also setup an external time source.  You can do this by going to this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042 and following the steps outlined in the “Configuring the Windows Time service to use an external time source” section. "
Here is a grate article about time synchronization in hyper-v :

  • VMM 2012: How to Configure Automatic Start and Stop Actions for a Virtual Machine?

Does somebody know how to confgure Automatic Start and Stop Actions for a Virtual Machine in VMM 2012?
    I miss that option.

Automatic Start or Automatic Restart actions are available for virtual machines running on a Hyper-V cluster from within Virtual Machine Manager.
From within Virtual Machine Manager, bring up the Virtual Machine's properties:
    Click "Hardware Configuration"
    Click "Availability"
Click "High", "Medium", or "Low" to enable automatic start/restart or
Click "Do not restart automatically" to disable automatic start/restart
Screenshot from VMM 2012 for a VM running in a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster:
VMs running on a cluster have to be marked "Highly Available" and logically, Microsoft assumes that you'll want these VMs to be running all the time when this setting is selected.  If the cluster fails or needs to be restarted, you can set the priority
by which a VM restarts, or you can set the VM to not restart at all when cluster services are restored by using the settings above.
