Voltage histograms

Hi,
I'm currently running "niScope EX Votlage Histograms.vi" using LabView 8.0, but I don't know how to use it. I inputted the correct resource name for the digitzer, but I get "Error -1074135024: Invalid value for paramter or property". I have a NI PXI-5620 Digitizer, a PXI-5441 AWG, and a PXI-5690 Preamplifier. I have other instruments, but I'm not sure if they are of any use for this part of the project.
Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sammy

Good morning Sammy,
Thanks for contacting National Instruments with your issue, we'll try our best to resolve it for you as quickly and efficiently as possible.
There should be no reason why your PXI-5620 Digitizer shouldn't be able to work with the example you mentioned, you shouldn't need any of the other devices.  More important than the error code (-1074135024) would be where in the code it threw this error.  When the error message comes up, it should tell you " Error -1074135024 occurred at: niScope xxxxxxx.vi".
Which VI this error is coming from will give us a better idea of which value is invalid for which parameter or property.  In all likelihood, one of the settings you've chosen in the Front Panel of this example is not supported, or beyond the allowable ranges for the PXI-5620.  I.e. you chose the minimum sample rate to be too high, or the voltage limits are beyond what the card can safely handle etc.
Best of luck with your project.
Sincerely,
Minh Tran

  • Why do adjacent bins differ so widely in histograms?

Looking at the tutorial "Histogram Measurements with NI High-Speed Digitizers", we see that neighboring histogram levels differ by a factor of 3 or more, even though the overall curve is as expected.
I have the same problem in my application in the UNCC Adaptive Optics Lab. Why does this occur?

Short answer - you are probably seeing small number statistics in action. Long answer - most histograms are generated to find the mean and standard deviation of a random process. If the number of points in any particular bin is random, the one sigma variation of the number of hits in each bin is the square root of the number of hits in that bin. So, if you want a smooth curve, you need lots of hits. For example, assume you have a histogram that has a width at the 1/e point of four bins. The peak is 10 hits high. The next bin is 3 hits. The next over from that 4. This represents a Gaussian with a true peak height of 7.3 and a 1 sigma variation in the hits for each bin. There is about a 5% chance of this occurring. Take the same underlying random phenomenon a
nd take a histogram with a true height of 7300 hits and then apply the same one sigma variation to each bin. You get a sequence of 7385, 5610, and 2737 - much smoother.
You need to do this sort of calculation for any histogram you generate. Then you need to determine if the results are interesting physics or just random chance. Nobel prizes have hinged on this very question.
You need to determine whether or not you expect a Gaussian curve. If you are taking the voltage histogram of the tops of two square waves, you should get two sharp spikes. Depending upon the width of your bins, you may or may not get tails on the spikes. If you are capturing the whole pulse, you would not expect a Gaussian peak shape due to ringing at the edges of the pulse.
So, remember what you are measuring, analyze the statistics, and look for the underlying phenomenon. Good luck! Have fun!

  • Histogram of Gaussian White Noise with NI5112

I am digitizing some random gaussian white noise with a NI-PXI 5112. The problem is that even with very high number of samples (1 Mega sample) the distribution presents a lot of periodic pikes when making a voltage histogram (either with built in function or by postprocessing data with Mathematica).
I am using two synchronized digitizers and they both have the same behaviour (pikes symmetric around 0 and with periodicity), but give different response from one another.
I already tried to filter the data, change the vertical range of both aquisition and generation devices, but the pikes always appear at the same relative values, and with the same relative number of counts.
How can I overcome this problem ?

Could you post a screenshot of your histogram? How many bins do you have in your histogram?
Remember that the 5112 is an 8-bit boards so you only have (in the order of) 256 possible values so unless you 'hit' the exact values your bins will have un-equal weights. This could result in the periodic behavior you are observing.

  • ADC with very low DNL for pulse height histogram MCA ?

I'm looking for an 100 kHz or faster analog to digital converter with
very low DNL ( much lower than 0.1 lsb or 10%) to be used for pulse
height MCA analysis by creating a histogram of digitized count
values. Standard PCI interface cards have DNL of 0.2 lsb which
produces noisy histograms when repeatedly digitizing a triangle wave
spanning the entire adc input range. PCI card would be best, but
external device or just the adc chip itself would be useable.
Wilkinson style is one known for such low DNL.

Application is time correlated single photon counting to measure
nanosecond fluorescent lifetimes. A laser pulse generates a start
pulse. The first photon emitted from the sample generates a stop
pulse. The time difference is converted to a voltage pulse (0 to
+10V), 2 usec duration (I could extend that with an external
sample/hold) by a time-to-amplitude converter. The overall lifetime
of the sample is constructed by repeating this at least tens of
thousands of times. For each laser shot, the voltage pulse is
digitized and its binary code summed into a histogram bin. A plot is
made of number of occurances vs adc binary code value. At least 12
bits of resolution is desired. The pulses to be digitized occur
randomly in time at least 10 usec apart (maybe 100 usec).
For accurate data, the width of each histogram bin should be equal. I
test this by making a histogram from a triangle wave. The number of
occurances vs raw adc counts should be flat. Instead, it exhibits
variations of 20% (equivalent to 0.2 lsb of dnl).
So what I'd like is an adc with bin widths equal to say 1% that can
digitize a voltage within 10 usec. Its type should not really matter
as long as it can accomplish this.
A 20% deviation in adc bin width seems like a high value for something
electronic in nature ike this. What is it that makes this not
typically so, since most adc's has 0.2 lsb DNL specs ?

    HP LaserJet P2055d Printer (CE457A) -
All of them three operates on 110v USA.  but i need them to use in 220V . Can anyone recommend me any good Voltage converter ?
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Before go out to buy a converter/transformer  (you need over 2KW for all 3 of them), please check the switches at the back, they may have switches to switch from 110V to 220V. I don't know your market, my suggestion: talk with an electrician who knows the real world much better.
    Regards.

  • Voltage question for Inspire 5200 5.1 Speakers

Hi, I'm new to the forum, so I'm not sure if this question has been answered in the past, but...
I just moved back States-side after living in Pakistan for about 6 months, and I brought my Pakistan-bought Inspire 5200 speakers. I don't know if I should buy a voltage converter or whatever.
On the AC adaptor, it says "PRL. :230V~50Hz 320 mA... SEC. : 2V ~ 4.2A". I read up a little on this stuff, and, unless I'm mistaken, in Pakistan, the voltage is 220V and 50Hz, while in the US, its 110V and 60Hz.
Is it safe to use the speakers here WITHOUT a voltage converter or a step-down transformer?
If it isn't safe, then what specific things do I need to pick up from Radioshack to make sure my speakers work and don't short-circuit or fry?
    Thanks.

If you use the right step down transformer than it's perfectly safe. The problem is, step down transformer worsen the sound a lot unless you use the very expensi've one. But if you can't hear the different than it's good then, trust your own ear anyway. I think the best way is to change the adaptor.

  • In Brazil. . . Do I need an adapter to plug in my HP Mini 110 into a 220 Voltage plug?

Hi! I'm living in Brazil for a while and just got here. I have an HP Mini 110 and the plugs here say 220V. Is it safe to plug in my computer or do I need some kind of converter? If so what kind?
My power is about to run out!!!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Sasha

No. The power brick for the iPod senses the voltage and adjusts for the different ones.
You will need an adapter to switch form flat us pins tot the round pins used on their plugs.

  • Guys, I'll be receiving a MacBook Pro bought in the US as a gift. I'm from UK, will the voltage difference (110v to 220v) and warranty/insurance coverage be an issue? Any other issues to face?

    Thanks guys...

Normally the voltage difference is not a problem because the charger can handle both.
I am not sure about the adapter plug: the wall sockets in UK and USA may be different, use a simple (earthed!) adapter for that if necessary.
The rest should be the same, although two keys on the keyboard might be different (@ is shift-2, try to find the other...).
    gratulations with your gift,
    Lex

  • I have a Macbook Air purchased in 2011 in the US.  I am traveling in South Africa and am unsure if I need a step down voltage converter before I plug my laptop into the wall to charge it (using an outlet adapter).  Am I ok to just plug in?

So standard electrical output from wall outlets in the US is 110V - 120V, and standard output from wall outlets in South Africa is 220V - 240V.  In SA I know I can plug in an iPhone using the iPhone charging cable and it will automatically step down the voltage, thus preventing my phone from overheating.  I cannot plug in a hairdryer or flat iron without step down voltage converter in SA.  Can I use the charger that came with my US 2011 Macbook Air and plug into a wall outlet in South Africa or do I need to purchase a step down voltage converter in order to charge my laptop while in SA?

You only need a plug adaptor as long as the voltage is between 100 and 240 volts.

  • Is there a workaround for Photoshop CS6 Histogram?

I have noticed this and I am wondering if there is a more feasable workaround other than saving my work, closing the application and reopening the app.
    Here are the steps:
Open a file (any file type compatible)
    Open the histogram window
    Open the layers window
If one layer / Background unlock
    OR
Open file with multiple layers (image, mask, or adjustment)
In Layer window now deselect the background layer or all of the layers by clicking on the window below the layers (RIGHT under "Layer 0" in layer window)
The histogram changes to B&W histogram
The only way to revert to the previous Color display is to close PS CS6 and reopen it. Then you are back to the full histogram.
When editing multiple layers in files, or compositing, this is really an issue and slows down workflow.
Is there another workflow? I have attempted a couple workarounds but none have worked other than restart.
Any idea what is happening? or is anyone else running into this?
Just "Not selecting" is not an option.

Seems like that has happened for several versions.
To get back to Colors without restarting photoshop cs6, you can go to Expanded View and choose Colors from the drop-down list.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR voltage regulators BURNING!!!

I had to test this motherboard because it was giving boot problems and it never lasted more than 2 minutes.
I set stock clocks for the CPU and also stock voltages.  I set downgraded clocks and even voltages, stability was improved but no more than 5 minutes.
After checking the board looking for something abnormal, I found the voltage regulator heatsinks too hot!!!.
Has someone got a similar problem??? Because I want to know before I try RMA, here in Argentina everyone with this mobo has some sort of problem. I think this mobo s---s but
I have to fix the problem in some way.

The hardware I´m running is the signature´s hardware except, obviously, for the motherboard.
I tested this mobo with my hardware, beacuse I´m sure it works correctly.
I don´t have my PSU specs because I changed the cover and it doesn´t have the sticker where it shows the currents.
It´s a 350 W Sunshine PSU, the one that is listed in my signature.
But I don´t think it´s a PSU problem, because I´ve already tested it with another PSU, a
Thermaltake one, and the problem persists.
I had the idea to add a fan to the heatsinks, I did this and stability was improved, so I´m almost sure that the problem is on the mobo and I´ll have to send it to RMA, but still any suggestions wil be apreciated

  • G4Ti4200-VTD64 voltage incompatibility with MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR??

    Hello,
I have the MSI G4Ti4200-VTD64 (4X) video card..  I want to upgrade my motherboard to K7N2 Delta-ILSR. Is there any voltage incompatibility?? I heard that new mother boards will support only AGP 1.5V. Is the AGP voltage of K7N2 Delta-ILSR 1.5volts??  Is my video card compatible with this voltage?? I really want to retain my current video card as I am quite satisfied with it and I'm not willing to invest on a new one at the moment. If there is an incompatibility could you suggest another Socket A MB with good performance and SATA RAID support.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,
    Joseph

    Joseph,
All 4X Vid Cards work on all 4X and 8X mobos. All 4X mobos work with all 4X and 8X Vid Cards.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • Memory Voltage X58 Platinum

    Hi,
I recently bought 2 GTX 460's to SLI with my X58 Platinum. I have been having lock ups while gaming that sometimes include white blocks all over the screen. EVGA tech support has told me to ensure my ram timings and voltages are set correctly for the RAM I use to ensure stability. The memory model I use is OCZ3G1333LV6GK. I changed the timings to 9-9-9-20, but I was unable to change the voltage from 1.5 to the recommended 1.65. The option was greyed out and the BIOS stated that changing the voltage to 1.65 could potentially damage the cpu.
Can I/Should I find a way to force the voltage up? Is this the incorrect RAM/Mobo Combination? What do you all think?

Use the +/- keys of your keyboard's numpad.

1.65V is the absolute maximum Intel has defined for DRAM voltage.  Ignore the warning.

  • KT3 Ultra ARU - Restricted Voltages?

I'm running a MSI KT3 Ultra ARU with an Athlon 1700+ tbred. I was trying to adjust the voltage, but the max I can put it at is 1.6V (the default voltage for my chip is 1.5V). Now, I know the board can go higher for sure, because prior to this tbred, I was running a Palomino, and I had the voltage at 1.85V. But now, the max it allows me to select is 1.6V. Is there a way to "unlock" the voltage so I can bump it up past 1.6V?

This seems to be the #1 complaint for the kt3-ultra series. I'd too like to find a way(without mods) to get the voltage past 1.6 on my tbredA. I heard they may be releasing a new bios(at least for my ultra2) but I doubt it'll affect the voltage adjustments. It'll Probably just have a few bug fixes and barton support.
