VPLS MTU requirement
Hi All,
We are planning to run VPLS over the DSL link and i think MTU cab be an issue in such scenario as the MTU size will depends uppon the DSL provider settings. So i am not sure how to acheive this solution in terms of MTU issues and also can some one please guide me how to calculate the required MTU for running VPLS in DSL access media ?
MTU on interface to CE ?
MTU on interface to the Core ?
Thanks in advance guys.
Sree
Hi Sree,
the rule for MPLS (hence for VPLS too) is to have the highest MTU you can configure on the core interfaces. Usually ISPs have nowaday 9000.
If this is not possible for VPLS you need to take into consideration the following for Max Frame Size:
Max Frame Size = Link Header + Tunnel label + VC label + Control Word +Transported L2 Header + Payload.
Link Header is the one of your DSL circuit (likely using ATM link header.. anyway it something you should know/ask your provider).
Tunnel label + VC label + Control Word = 12 Bytes (4 bytes per label + 4 bytes for control word which is optional as it sepends on underlying transport media and on vendor implementation... anyway you should consider it)
Transported L2 Header = it depends on what you transport. For Ethernet II encapsulation with dot1q consider 18 bytes (or 14 bytes if customer vlan id is not transported. This depends on implementations once again).
So in the worst scenario where you have CW and you transport customer vlan id you need at least 1530 Bytes + the DSL link header on the core facing interface.
On the customer facing interface I would leave the interface MTU you have (1500 if it is Ethernet - even though the actual value is higher as it considers the L2 link overhead already). Or else you need to change the MTU on every host.. not too handy.

SAP BO Latency and MTU requirements
I'm trying to find out the required MTU and latency for SAP Business One when used remotely via Windows Remote Desktop. Please help.
Hi Suman,
Thanks for your answers. You answers and links which you have attached are helpful and It answered my questions related to canvas size and Connections.
I am expecting some benchmark numbers as per the best practices with respect to the No. of components to be used to ensure the better loading of the dashboard. As the increase in number of components increase the size of the dashboard and also it requires more time to load the data for the components, I am looking for the number as per the best practice by considering the below points.
1. When I say the no. of components, I am not considering the components like label, text box, combo box or list box. I am considering the components which is used for visualization and interactive drill down on top of the visualized charts ( For Eg. Column charts, Pie charts, Gauges ).
2.I am not going to use more calculations/formulas in my dashboards as the values and structure are almost the same with the BEx query.
3.Having around 10 to 12 connections.
4.The data sets are not more than 900 rows totally. For any control, we will be binding only 100 rows at the max as the data for the KPIs are summarized at the year/month level at the BW layer.
Since the KPIs are more, the Visualizations are more and we can't re-use the Visualization charts for most of the KPIs. Currently I am ending up with ~35 charts/ gauges along with other label and selection controls which I will be using to show 100 KPIs with unique visualization requirements and I am going for the tab-wise layout with more dynamic to accommodate and separate logically.
Hope these details will give clear picture of why I am looking for the Benchmark on No. of components .
I appreciate your help!
Thanks and Regards

I will Paypal you $100 if you can resolve this Port Forward problem
Believe me when I tell you, If you are the person who fixes this problem, I will GLADLY Paypal you $100.
This is so unbelievable. Short story is, after 12 hours of paid support through Support RIX, 6 hours with TWC support, and 4 different modems there isn't a single person in these groups that can get ports forwarded on my Linksys E4200 router.
I am running a fresh copy of windows 7 with all updates and no anti virus installed. I purchased a Motorola ARRIS SURFboard modem 200 series DOCSIS 3.0 so I have no double router issues. Before I was using the TWC moden/routers in bridge mode.
I have no problem setting a static IP or configuring port forwarding. It doesn't matter if I have windows firewall on or off. I can't get an outside port checking website that can verify an open port.
I am trying to play Battlefield 4 using the port forwarding request they provide.
If I run a local port check program on my computer it will confirm the ports open. Ok, Fair enough. They tell me the outside port checking utilities will say the port is closed unless I am running the program that uses these open ports.
SO I run the game and check and it always says port closed. One of the ports I want to open is 80. It has to be open to get internet anyway but it still shows closed using the online port checking websites.
I connected the computer to the modem. No router. I keep getting ports closed or filtered when I check through 6 different port checking sites. Leads me to think their is some kind of block in the ethernet card software.
Its a Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller with a driver date of 8/26/2014. Latest one I could find.
I think its an ethernet card filter. Just my thoughts. Here is the current adapter card settings.

I used a port tester downloaded from PCWinTech.com v3.0.0. It says the ports are open. When I close port 80 it says port 80 is closed. My problem is nothing outside my network can confirm an open port. It always states port closed.
The game I am playing is Battlefield-4. I have played all of the campigns without any problem but once online it crashes. The BF-4 community says I need to open 5 single ports and 5 port ranges. This is what I am trying to do.
We have tried an ARRIS router modem, a Ubee router modem (both in bridge mode) and are now using a motorola modem. All with the same problem. We checked the ports during game play and they all say closed.

Router and Wired Configurations
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only.
If you set up port forwarding, disable uPnP and test.
When you check for port status, you have to be actively using the port before you scan check as you may get a false negative if your not using the port. If your using the port then check the status, you should get an accurate result.
I would try using Port Range Triggering instead of PF and set up the port as follows for your PC that your gaming with:
0 thru 65535. A bit less hassle to set up then all those different port rules.
PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar. -
WiFi keeps disconnecting in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on Macbook Pro
I have an early i7 2011 Macbook Pro. Since upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 my WiFi keeps disconnecting. There isn't a certain time it disconnects - sometimes it works fine for a few hours, sometimes for just 10 minutes. When the connection is lost, it shows that its connected in the taskbar at the top, however when going into network preferences it shows the WiFi as turned off. In order to turn it back on I need to restart the Mac.
I have tried the following:
reset SMC
delete network preferences
create new network connection
add DNS servers
Add manual MTU
Require password to turn on/off WiFi / change network (still disconnects!)
Change order of preferred networks
I phoned Apple Care who told me to delete the network preferences, this worked for about 5 mins and then the problem returned!
I cannot change the router settings as I connect to my employers network. All other employees using Window machines are working fine and my iPhone connects perfectly fine also.
Somebody please help me! I feel my only option now would to do a clean install - not ideal! Apple, please HELP.
Merry Christmas everyone.Hi - I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro mid 2010 which drops the wifi connection randomly (not necessarily when I move it or the lid - see other posts on this) and then often ends up freezing when I try to investigate.
I installed Mavericks to see if that would resolve the issue but it doesn't.
Somebody in one of these posts suggested it might be a faulty connection between airport card and mother board... which I suppose could be caused by a jolt to the machine (mine travels as hand luggage on planes every now and then).
I am running OS X 10.9 on a 13 inch Mid 2010 MBP with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB 1067MHz DDR3 memory.
If anyone comes up with an answer to this PLEASE post it here so that we can all resolve our wifi dropping/freezing issues!
Thanks -
WRT54G2V1 Need Open NAT for Destiny PS3
I currently have a Linksys WRT54G2V router. My Playstation3 has a wired connection to my router. With my current settings when I play Destiny on my PS3 I have a moderate NAT, and would like an open NAT. My ISP is Charter Communications. I do get a public IP through to my router, and have tried portforwarding. Am i missing anthing? Do i just need a better router?

EA6350 fails to load web pages, but all other online services continue working
Occasionally, when using the internet, web pages stop loading. Other online services such as messenger programs, Netflix, and online games still function properly. I usually end up having to restart the router in order to re-enable browsing. We are using the latest firmware, and only purchased the router about a month or two ago. I'm on channel 11, with only one other network on 11, and my 5 Ghz channel is irrelevant, as I'm the only 5 Ghz network in my area. Is the router defective? Is it a problem with a firewall or other program? Let me know if you need any more information.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. Ensure modem is working well too. Bad modems are out there as well. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Hi,
As we know IS-IS is layer-2 routing protocol, so it doesn't have native support for fragmentation right! So IS-IS use Padding to maximum MTU size to find out the MTU requirement on the link! now again using Padding Router will come to know the connected link MTU! what if we have scenario like: R1---R2---R3, now how R1 will come to know the total path MTU from R1 to R3 if we have different MTU between R1 & R2 as well as R2 & R3? so in short how Fragmentation will work for the IS-IS update packet?
regards
Devang PatelHello Harold,
an IS-IS LSP can be "fragmented" but only by the LSP owner/originator.
the LSP PDU format includes a field called LSP ID.
An LSP-ID is made of the following fields
system-id. 1 byte that says if originator is a node or a pseudonode (0x00 if router) a byte called LSP number and a 4byte Sequence number.
the byte called LSP number allows to carry information of a single LSP within multiple IS-IS PDUs each with incremental LSP number field.
so there is no critical MTU problem for LSP.
At least in theory.
However, an MTU mismatch is a problem because hello PDUs are padded to MTU value.
I see that the command lsp-mtu allows to reduce the LSP MTU and is required if there is a link with MTU less then 1500 bytes.
For the link state nature of IS-IS the command if needed has to be applied to all routers not only the two on the link with lower MTU
I understand now what you mean: once the LSP has leaved the originator node it cannot be fragmented by any other node : or it is able to travel over the network topology (LSP flooding) or it will be lost counting as a giant.
Hope to help

AC1600 Slow Wired And Wireless Speed
Hello,
I just purchase a smart WiFi router model AC1600. The speed off my router is 3 times as slow as what is coming from my MTA from the cable company. I reinstall my firmware and rebooted it several times, but the best I can get is 6 Mbps downstream while I am getting between 22-30 Mbps downstream off my cable MTA without the router. I love the security the AC1600 provide and would love to keep it, but I hate my speed I am getting from it...any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I never thought upgrading a router and modem would be so much trouble. And every time I work with support for either, they want you to unplug both and let them reset. Maybe the technology today requires that unplugging be done before you want to use the internet? Okay, I bought this high-end router to go along with my Cisco 3010 modem. I fought this setup for 2 weeks, and then got Cox to send a technician out to check my lines. After an hour, we discovered that the modem was putting out the 50Mbs that my service provided. But, the router was only kicking out 15Mbs and having packet loss. I got on here, and used technical help chat to find the settings required to get the 50Mbs coming out of the router now. I don't know why I had to make these manual settings, and go through all that work. But, for now I'll just grit my teeth and say "that's the technology of today". But after a few days, I find that streaming Amazon is not fixed, I still get buffering and poor quality. So, I decided to try and do a ping test, and the report is showing packet loss. How do I fix this, in simple terms? If I knew it took a technician to come out and set this router up in the first place, I can assure you I wouldn't have spent $200+ on this device! If I can't get this router working top-notch today, it's going back and I'll buy another brand ASAP. I'll gladly take any recommendations for a better model, if you can't help me fix the issues.

LinkSys E2500 Internet Problems
Hello, I've recently bought an E2500 Wireless Router for my home, but every 1-2 days I've been having an issue.
The internet connection will suddenly drop. Upon checking the "Internet Connection" information, under "Status" I see that the internet IPv4 address field is all 0.0.0.0, when it usually is not. I've tried everything to fix this but the only thing that seems to work is for me to hold down the reset button until the router returns to factory settings then use the Installation CD to set back up my Wifi.
After that it will work for a while then some time later stop yet again. It happens over and over again and I'm not sure what to do. I can confirm it's NOT the Internet Modem that's the problem, if I connect my laptop directly to the modem I get internet. And I've called my ISP but they say it's a problem with the Router itself. I Googled the issue and saw that some cable internet providers (My internet provider is cable based) require you to set the MAC Address Clone to "on" which I did and cloned my laptop's MAC but this too has not worked. Releasing and Renewing the IP address also does not work.
I THINK this happens everytime the DHCP Lease time runs out, but I am unsure. Any help that can be given on this would be appreciated, else I may have to return this router and get another.Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm and http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/ If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Got a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo in the office. It works fine with all other PCs in the office but my Macbook Air (running 10.7.2). Taking minutes to access files almost every hours. It seems like it has to reload the whole directory and it takes minutes to complete. Happens everytime after restarting my Computer and rejoining network. Anyone has same issue? Really don't wanna run Win 7 on my Air...

HELP with WRT160Nv2 (2 xbox one NAT)
I have 2 xbox ones in my house connected to the WRT160Nv2 router. I have tried literally everything. Port forwarding, triggering, uPnP, static IP's, blah blah blah. From the research I've done uPnP should be the only thing necessary to run two xboxes at the same time in the same game. Is this router's UPNP just total garbage? Is there a firmware update that will solve my problem? Please link me if so. I am currently running Firmware Version: v2.0.02 . (probably the default, but doing a few google searches people say some firmware updates for this router make it worse)
Please help me out because researching this stuff really gives me a headache after a while.
If this matters... We are able to play in the same games occasionally but often times one or both of us will drop out from the game. It's especially bad in call of duty. Sometimes I will drop even if the other xbox isn't even turned on, so i don't even know where to start.Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Once IPs are reserved for both, Do a factory network reset on the XB1s to clear out any bad configurations.
Turn OFF XB1s
Set up port range triggering using 0 and 65535.
Keep uPnP enabled.
Disable any firewall temporarily for testing.
Save settings and reboot the router.
After router is back to ready, turn on one XB1 and check NAT. Turn on the 2nd XB1 and check NAT.
