W520 - various SSD issues

Until now I have found the following issues with various SSD drives. I would like to use this thread to gather the various issues and to advise potntial buyers:
Intel 510 Sata3 SSD - 240gb:
- Cold boot without USER/MASTER password works fine
- Cold boot with USER/MASTER password works fine
- Warm boot without USER/MASTER password takes much too long with lot of drive activty
- Warm boot with USER/MASTER password halts due to unreadable POP/USER password
(Subsequential Cold boot accepts the password again)
OCZ Vertex 3 Sata3 SSD - 240Gb:
- does not fit the HDD bracket well
- setting USER/MASTER passwords results in inaccessible drive -> RMA is only option left
- setting USER passwords results in inaccessible drive -> HDD unlocker tool (ATAPWD) is only option

Referencing the opening post:
OCZ Vertex 3 Sata3 SSD - 240Gb:
- does not fit the HDD bracket well
Just FYI,
I posted the "fit" problem on the OCZ Sandforce Forum, as well as exchanged e-mails with their tech support.
They actually asked me to RMA my V3-240GB, then claimed they mounted it successfully in several laptops, but never specified which models or brands.
There was some indication that there was another housing/casing for the V3 other than the standard casing, but that never panned out, and the RMA'd drive is on its way back to me, as-is.
Two of their forum techs admitted that the V3 proportions are on the high side of the specs, but still within specs (the relevant spec is SFF-8201). I concurr with that conclusion, but told them that it does not solve the problem.
My observations which I shared with the OCZ tech support & RMA departments are as follows:
At the connection end of the drive, the V3-240GB is approx 1/16" wider than the V2-200G that I also have.
Consequently, only the non-connection end of the V3 fits into the W510 & W520 primary drive bay caddies. (Probably affects the T510 & T520, too.)
The connection end of the drive is too wide for the caddy.
Alternatives:
The only way to get the drive into the caddy as-is, is to use only 3 of the 4 mounting screws, but that leaves the non-screwed in flange of the caddy bowed out. This results in too tight a fit in the drive bay and possible torquing of the electrical connection to the laptop; heat causing further expansion may also be an issue.
Mount the drive without the caddy and/or rubber bumper rails. This leaves the drive so loose in the bay that I believe it risks actual disconnection from the laptop while remaining in the bay.
My at least temporary solution; mount the drive with the caddy and bumpers after cutting a notch out of the caddy at one of either side of the connection end of the caddy; essentially cutting off the flange through which the 4th mounting screw would be inserted. This allows the drive/caddy/bumper assembly to rest in the drive bay as intended.

  • Various Phantom Issues

My wife has a iphone 4s that has been experienceing various phantom issues. Today there was no volume with phone (external ringer or headphone volume) The mute button was not on and when switched from volume to mute the icon changed on the screen to show the change between states, but still no volume. This can experienced with music library or watching a video on Youtube. All volume setting in the Sounds tab have not been changed and the volume can be adjusted up and down but no audible sounds can be heard. Issue #2 when I power the phone off, it just reboots. So after messing with it for sometime I gave up on the volume and after 10 minutes the volume worked. Im sure this has to be a software issue but seriously a pain in the ***!!

    CC complains about an ambiguity between B < U > :: A
    and B < U > :: A.
I have filed bug 6377582 for this issue.
CC refuses this code. However, if I replace "friend
class" by "friend template", it accepts it with a
warning. g++ does the exact contrary. Could there be
an agreement?"friend template" is not valid, and the compiler might not be doing what you intend.
    The code
    friend class B< C<T> >::Nested;
is not valid because Nested is a typedef, not a class. You need to express what you mean some other way.
I also have a problem with something like the
following, but it is probably a well-known issue.
I have filed bug 6377606 for the incorrect error message about overload ambiguity.
If you have a Sun Service contract, you can track progress on the bugs and get a pre-release patch to try. Otherwise, you can check the Sun Studio patch page every month or so and see if a new patch is available that fixes these bugs.

  • 6465b - Bios and ssd issue. Intel 520 not recognized by BIOS.

    Hi,
I am writing with 2 issues.
    First, BIOS issue.
BIOS F.20 for 6465b and 6565b is no longer available. The current version on HP support page is BIOS F.03. Anybody know why it was changed?
When will be released F.22 which should enable support for SATA III, as F.22 for 6x60b notebook?
Second, ssd issue, which I believe is connected with Bios.
I've bought Intel 520 120gb SSD and it is not recognized by BIOS. When I put it as primary hard drive and turn notebook on,i go 5 blink of caps + num lock, and al stuck.
I can't install system. But ssd works when in external eSATA enclosure. So it isn't ssd related problem.
I know for sure that 320, m4 are perfectly working on 6465b. Other SF drives, Force GT and Agility 3, too.
What is wrong with 520, and how it can be resolved. I think only new BIOs, unfortunately.

I can confirm that an Intel 520 SSD in combination with an HP 6465b is an issue.. The CAPS + Scroll blink 5 times while in POST. This indicates a general mainboard issue, but I am 100% sure that there is an incompatibility between the two
I have installed BIOS F.21 and the firmware of the Intel SSD is standard (errrr 300i if I'm not mistaken).
Right now the laptop is useless (it has to have a SSD drive for our developer-dudes) so I'm hoping HP will release F.22 soon.. Where did you find that F.22 will add support for SATAIII?
Stupid thing is, when I put the drive in a really old beast (HP nx7400) the SSD works without hickups.

  • W520 CRASHES SSDs WHEN WAKING UP FROM SLEEP MODE

I bought a W520 about a year ago and have gone through 2 SSDs (new Crucial M4 256GB drives), each of which died when the machine was coming out of sleep mode.  I had problems with the W520 not coming out of sleep mode properly since I receive it, but since it was intermittent, I didn't send it in.  After this second drive crashed (when the W520 was struggling to come out of sleep mode), I shipped it to the depot and they replaced the motherboard.  It might be an isolated incident, but wanted to pass it along in case others are experiencing a similar problem.

    SSDee wrote:
@Thor - I too like Acronis although one could use Windows Backup if so desired.
Sleep mode -  I use sleep mode for scheduled recording of TV shows in Windows Media Center. If I shut down, no recording.
Yea, waking up to do a recording is certainly a valid scenario.  I gave up on Windows Media Center right before they came out with an XBOX that is actually quiet and could be used as an extender.  We've been a TiVo family since those noisy XBOX days.
Regarding sleep/hibernate, I just got tired of my machines waking in the Lenovo dock and having to reset application position, screen resolutions, and all of the other crap that seems to happen to ThinkPads on a resume.  That doesn't even take into account the black screen of death or other reliability issues I've seen over the years.
I am firmly a shutdown guy now.  It's clean and I know what I get when I press the power button again.  With 15-25 second boots and fast I/O, the reliability outweighs the perceived time savings.
We haven't discussed what might be corrupting the original posters file system.  That is disconcerting.  Sounds like a Crucial M4 firmware issue.  If that is the culprit, there's going to be hell to pay on the mSATA M4 based Ultrabooks assuming it has the same bug.

  • W520 - Cold boot issues when docking, undocking

Has anyone seen this? My W520, BIOS 1.34, has issues when I cold boot for the FIRST time when I move the machine either to or from the mini-dock. What I mean is it doesn't boot quite right if I shut it down docked, then cold boot it undocked or vise versa.
By issues, I mean that although it boots into the Windows 7 desktop, most apps won't load. It is hard to describe.
My solution is to cold boot again. Then everything is ok.
I know the stock response - boot a minimal system, upgrade drivers and BIOS etc etc etc. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen this before and knows the exact cause of  this issue. It sure would save me some time investigating.
Speaking of BIOS, what are the odds of Lenovo releasing anything further for the W520 i.e. "Version 1.4" without the 1333Mhz cap on memory?

  • Various hardware issues with Asus G73

    Hello everybody,
First let me say that issue I'm experiencing is caused by hardware malfunction I need help diagnosing.
Since it has nothing to do with Arch (or any other OS for that matter), I hope this is the right place to post.
Now, let's get to the problem.
I have Asus G73-JW laptop. It's 'desktop replacement' machine from 2010 based on
Nehalem platform (i7-740QM @ 1.7GHz) paired with nVidia 460m and 8 GB of ram.
It has not so nice 17" 1080p screen and 750GB HDD and 60GB SSD as storage.
Few months ago I started playing Battlefield 3 on dual-booted Windows 7 and native Steam Team Fortress 2 on x64 Arch.
While playing those games weird things began to happen.
First, laptop started emmiting loud, extremely annoying high-pitched noise. After a while noise fades but fans start
running on full speed. Screen backlight flickers (as if it was a recording with an old camera) unless it's set to max
when picture appears normal. Keyboard becomes unresponsive. It works, but it's not enough to just press keys,
they need to be pressed for much longer than usual. Maybe for half a second or less, but enough to make keyboard
unusable. Keyboard backlight turns off if it was on (and vice versa) and can't be controlled with hotkeys.
At that time, I suspected this is somehow related to GPU since laptop was functioning perfectly normal unless in a
game or GPU benchmark. Even really CPU intensive tasks such as building CyanogenMod which drove CPU temperature
over 90C caused no issues. But after some time these sympthoms started showing regardles to GPU usage or system load,
which led me to recognising few more of them and making sure this is not software problem since it's exibited on Arch and
few other distros, Windows 7 and 8.
After laptop goes nuts, it can be normalized either by shutting down or suspending to ram.
During sleep few LEDs that are normally blinking will stay on. After they start blinking again everything will work normally after
waking up (for some time, that is) and it will be possible to wake it on any key. If LEDs are stuck, only power key works.
In the begining it took it few hours or more to become normal, but now 20-30 minutes is enough and same amount of time applies
for both powering up and waking from sleep. Even if laptop didn't 'calm down', it will be silent during wake up process, but fans will
kick in full speed right after. If power cable gets removed out while on rampage, keyboard and touchpad simply die. If I shut it down
without power pluged in, it won't be possible to turn it back on without waiting a while. Whether it's with or without battery, or running
only on battery power, makes no difference - fans keep on spinning as fast as they can.
Even though temperatures are completely normal - CPU in mid 40s, GPU somewhat hotter, I thought something that is not reporting
temperature to OS (chipset or whatever) might be overheating, so I took it apart. After cleaning everything thoroughly, changing
thermal paste and thermal pads, nothing changed besides temperatures which are few degrees lower now. While open, I took the
chance to look for anything that doesn't look normal, leaked capacitors, unsoldered components, but everything looked just fine.
I have googled my ass off, but I have been unable to find any similar reports for this or any other notebook.
As far as logs go, I don't think there is anything to give you except maybe kernel log.
I'm trying to diagnose problem myself (and, if possible, fix it) because everything that runs on electricity is so damn expensive here,
not to mention repair shop services and their prices. Warranty is long gone, and since laptop was bought on US Amazon, I'm not sure it
would have done me any good here in Bosnia.
I would really apreciate any help and if there is any useful info I didn't provide, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Šaran.

Since few days ago battery LED sometimes blinks red although acpi reports 100% full.

  • Yosemite stuck on boot screen - Possible M4 SSD issue

I had OS X Mavericks prior to installing OS X 10.10 Yosemite. I downloaded Yosemite through the App Store on to a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13 in.
      Model Name:    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro9,2
      Processor Name:    Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:    2.5 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB
      L3 Cache:    3 MB
      Memory:    Crucial 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
      Boot ROM Version:    MBP91.00D3.B09
      SMC Version (system):    2.2f44
      Sudden Motion Sensor:
      State:    Enabled
The download was fairly quick as I upgraded as soon as the update came out. It took about 30 minutes and then locked up before the next 7 minutes to finish the installation. I have FileVault turned on and would enter the password to login to the drive and my user account. The progress bar would get to 50% and then stop. I waited about 30 minutes the first time and 45 minutes the next. After multiple reboots, the same issue would happen.
I rebooted into OSX recovery system (Option-R during bootup) and was going to reinstall OSX Yosemite. After unlocking the boot drive, entering in my Apple account info, it said it was going to take a few hours to redownload and install. I stopped it 5 minutes into the download and rebooted the Mac using the OSX recovery system exit > reboot method. Luck would have it, I was able to login and complete the install. I updated all the applications to the latest version (outside of the App Store), such as Adobe, Silverlight, etc.., missed this step prior to installed Yosemite. Everything was working fine.
During normal work, I had a lot of applications open from VMware Fusion, Office for Mac, Firefox, and then when I opened Preview, the Mac crashed with the grey screen of death. When I rebooted by holding down the power button for 10 seconds, it would only let me unlock the drive and was stuck loading up to 50% without ever getting past the progress screen for 30 minutes. I went back to OSX Recovery System and performed the reinstall OSX Yosemite and backed out again as I did before thinking it would let me log in. After rebooting it failed to get past 50%. The next reboot I was able to login.
I started thinking about the 256GB M4 SSD Firmware and noticed on the http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-ssd-firmware it stated upgrading from 040H (what I was on) to 070H would fix the following issues. Granted it stated for Windows and not Mac, after updating the firmware, I have been shutting down and rebooting without issue (crossing fingers).
The following is a summary of changes between 040H and 070H, which are independent of operating system:
Resolved a power-up timing issue that could result in a drive hang, resulting in an inability to communicate with the host computer. The hang condition would typically occur during power-up or resume from Sleep or Hibernate. Most often, a new power cycle will clear the condition and allow normal operations to continue. The failure mode has only been observed in factory test. The failure mode is believed to have been contained to the factory. This fix is being implemented for all new builds, for all form factors, as a precautionary measure. The fix may be implemented in the field, as desired, to prevent occurrence of this boot-time failure. To date, no known field returns have been shown to be related to this issue. A failure of this type would typically be recoverable by a system reset.
I upgraded the current Mac to a Crucial M4 256GB SSD and moved the stock 750GB hard drive to the cd-rom bay. I was able to install the update to 070H using an bootable USB stick and the method from http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/Updating-firmware-on-Macs-without-a-sup erdrive/td-p/61259. I did have to disconnect the second drive (just lifted the connector to the motherboard) as it would not allow the Firmware update to start with the drive connected.
Seeing if this helps anyone else out with Yosemite locking up during a boot. I did not enable TRIM as I read it can hurt the M4 SSD since it has a garbage collection.
    M4-CT256M4SSD2:

I rebooted my machine and was back to either getting stuck at 50% or just seeing a black screen. Both times I was using a Kensignton USB 3.0 Multi-Display Adapter as well as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI port. Once I power off (hold 10 second power button), unplug all external monitors, I'm able to boot into the OS.

  • LR cc does not save files in Original Folder - various folder issues

the LR cc application is in my Windows 7 C: drive, a 256 MB Solid State Drive.  I keep all my images on a 1T Hard drive, "My Pictures."  I convert raw CR2 files to DNG files using the Adobe DNG converter, and store them in a labeled folder in My Pictures (on the 1T hard drive).  I then make jpegs from the DNG image files, often with lots of "development" (adjustments.)  When I save them, I export them to the "Same Folder As Original."  BUT, they are always exported to an entirely new folder located on my C: Drive, my SSD.  This error started happening recently; I have used lightroom for several years and never had this issue.  In addition, it seems to make a copy of my DNG files in the same folder, and those files seem to be different from my originals.  (I think lightroom keeps track of the adjustments somehow, without using sidecar files.  I don't know how that works.  I got an error message when I tried to use one of the DNG files after I deleted them from the C: drive.
What's going on?  I tried looking at Preferences but did not find a relevant topic.

I have to say that menu bar has been the same for many, if not all, versions of LR. It also give you a description of what each option does, IIRC.
You have all the options you need, "Copy as DNG" (What that does is take whatever file extension you are using, even a DNG file, and converts it to a DNG, Yes even if the original is a DNG), "Copy" (I hope you know what that does. COPIES the files from the original location to another location of your choosing), "Move" (MOVES the file/files from the original location and places it/them in a folder of your choosing) all the above also put the images in the LR database and last but not least Add (All that does is add the images to your Lightroom database).
I always use the ADD option as I copy my images off the memory card to a folder or folders of my choosing first.

And yes, this is my own config that is somewhat derived from an existing conky config (once I get this to play nice it'll have more unique entries, until then I'll just keep to what I already have in there)

yes it is easy to do it,  but now yuou will need to reduplicate your old hdd to your ssd and start over.
you will only get the blue screen...and nothing you can do about it.   i spent hours trying to prove that wrong and 20 minutes just reduplicating the drive, reinstalling it, and up i was.

  • W520 and SSD drive

    All:
I hope someone here can help me...  PLEASE
I have a new (today)  W520 (4284-AN4)   I installed x64 Win7 and then all Windows updates and then all lenovo updates (except fngerprint reader)  and while the system is nice the disk performance is less then spectacular for the SSD drive...
the performance resilts over all is 5.9
    Processor = 7.5
    Ram = 7.5
    Graphics = 6.9
    Gaming graphics = 6.9
    Disk Transfer = 5.9
I am told that is pretty bad for an SSD drive
The drive says it is an INTEL SSDSA2BW160G3L
I am using driver from Microsoft, Date 6/21/2006 verison 6.1.7600.16385
the system BIOS is: LENOVO 8BET47WW (1.27), 7/11/2011
    Does ANYONE have any ideas?
thanks in advance for any tips or tricks

So you are not running the factory preload? Check the sector alignment on the drive.  That could cause the performance to be degraded.
Run this tool to determine if you are aligned properly.

  • W520 mSATA SSD Crystal Disk Mark

Here is the benchmark for the ADATA 256GB SSD I just installed in my W520.
I have a mSATA to 2.5" adapter, so i could move it from the mSATA slot and put it in the SATA III ultra or primary bay. Truth be told, I don't feel like taking her apart again, as the SSD is going to stay under the keyboard, no matter what.
It seems to me that only the sequential read is bottlenecked by SATA II. Am I interpreting this correctly? Doesn't SATA II top out at a nominal 3Gb/sec?
    Thanks in advance.

@lead - thank you for your response.
I am quite happy with the system as it stands i.e. keeping the SSD in mSATA.
I am a bit perplexed because of this review:
    review
These are the scores they obtained using SATA III. I can understand the difference in the Seq and 512K reads, but why the lower numbers for 4K and 4K QD reads and writes?
Perhaps I'll move the SSD to the main bay (as i mentioned I have an adapter) in due course, to see how my numbers differ, just for fun.
As i said, I love the way the system turned out with this configuration. The system is way better with the SSD as the boot drive, be it SATA II or SATA III. I love having two big disks in the primary and ultra bays too.

  • W520 HDD/SSD Advice

    Hi
I'm going to order a W520 from the Lenovo store but am unsure how to configure the hard drives.  I'm very keen to have a rapid start-up and system operation so would like to run the system on an SSD drive.  However the largest available seems to be 160Gb which I expect would get full very quickly.  When I select the RAID system in an attempt to add a second hard drive, the option to select an SSD drive is no longer there.  Can anyone advise me on how to order a W520 online with both an SSD drive for the OS and also a second, larger, internal HDD for file storage?   Many thanks in advance for your help.
    rjn.

    Option 1:
Buy the cheapest hard drive option through Lenovo.  Then buy the SSD you want direct through a 3rd party.  Toss the Lenovo drive and replace with your new 500GB 3rd party SDD.  Downside, you will be double buying drives and using an unsupported Lenovo configuration.
    Option 2:
Buy the Lenovo 160GB drive.  Buy separately the versa-bay HDD accessory and a large traditional spindle HDD.  Downside, you won't have a CD/DVD ROM, use more battery, slightly heavier laptop.
    Option 3:
Use a USB drive to add additional file storage.  I would recommend the Western Digital 1TB USB 3.0 because it works and is smaller than even a regular laptop 2.5" hard drive.  Downside, you can only keep data files on the USB and not programs because starting them without plugging in the external drive would be problematic.  This is the method I am using until I can afford a 500GB SSD.

  • W520 second SSD installation

Hi all,I have a W520 and I would like to:Add a second hard drive where the optical drive is.I would like the second drive to be a SSD drive.I would like it to be at least 500Gb.I would eventually like this drive to become my C drive (if at all possible) I bought my W520 with a 160Gb Intel SSD drive that is almost full. My current BIOS is version 1.32 If some of the gurus on this support site could please help I would be grateful. I am a high school science teacher and use this machine especially to do some 3-d simulations of molecules and I am now constantly running into the – nearly out of memory – warning. I want to be able to work all the kinks out over the summer before school starts back up. It is critical that my current setup not be affected by this – I use the W-520 on a docking station to which I have a 30” monitor (display port) and a 24” Dell (DVI) attached. The W-520 also has a USB 3 external hard drive (4Tb) attached to it. Many thanks,Sam

Thank you harrisb for taking the time to respond to my posting. Oh! I have so many questions for you about your W520s.  Anyway, to the task at hand:
Could you point me to where I might find instructions on installing the 500Gb MSata card? Does Lenovo having something by way of instructions on doing this? I will google it but just wondered if you knew!
Once installed, can I simply copy over the entire C drive and then I would be all set?
Is there a specific protocol I need to be able to copy all the files over from my current 160Gb ssd?
There is a partition on my C drive with the software that came with my Lenovo. Do I just keep this as is and not mess with it at all.
Lastly, I bought a Pioneer BluRay/CD player to rip my CDs. It appears to be a lot faster than the optical that came with the machine. I was thinking of getting rid of the optical drive altogether and getting one of the large capacity SSDs. Would I need to upgrade the BIOS? What are the things that must be worked out when installing one of the Samsung drives you have alluded to in your posts online? Any particular place you would recommend I get the drives from (the mSATA and, if I go with it, the larger SSD?
Thank you for your time again.
    Sam
I'll try to answer in order:
    1. The installation for the MSata card is in the HMM for the W520. The card is located under the keyboard so you need to remove that (two screws)  from the normal position and just lay it back on the palmrest. The Crucial card comes with the screws, but there's already a screw in the place (1).
    2. You need to create an image of your existing SSD C: drive so that that can be placed onto the new MSata card for using it at a boot drive. I would also make a backup set for the factory software ifyou haven't already done so in the past.
    3. You can use either Ghost 15.0 or Acronis TIM to create the image and then use it to restore the image to the new card.
    4. You can't use the factory restore partition software once you have made a backup copy to DVD discs so you can just eliminate it from the restore.
    5. One of the reasons that I keep my CD-ROM in the ultrabay I sometimes need it for the restore process when some software has corrupted the OS (happens more times of the last 4 years than I can count)
If you want to replace the CD-ROM from the Ultrabay, you need to obtain a HDD caddy from Newmodeus. This will come with all of the needed screws to mount the new SSD card.
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=400
I've usually obtained my SSD drives from Newegg.com. I would also suggest that you upgrade your BIOS level to 1.42.
