Walker Effects WE Premultiply

I have CS4 but I was reading an old book by the Meyers, Creating Motion Graphic with AE  Vol 1. the Essentials (©2004).  On the DVD they have some Free Plugins - by various manufactures.  In the chapter projects they mention that some of the plugins work better than those supplied in the AE program (that is AE version 6.5)  Since I like the idea of having more toys to play with, of course I want to have them at my disposal in AE CS4
However when I placed them where the manufactures designated (the AE Plug -in Folder) and open up the AE lessons from the book I get the message that those plugin are are missing.
I was wonder 2 things.
Is it most likely that because the plugins are so old they just aren't compatible and therefore don't show up in CS4;  and
Since CS4 is 5 years newer than when the book was written and the those plugins made, that it is also most likely that AE now ships with plug ins that are better than any of those old freebies and/or the functionality of AE has improved so much that those plug -in are obsolete.
For instance the WE Premultiply was supposed to be good at knocking out the color of a black solid when using it for a lens flare or other lighting effect.  Is it possible that now in CS4 the blending mode "Multiply" is much better and therefore a plug in like WE Premultiply is un-needed.
I'm new to AE with CS4 (2009) so I have no past reference to compare it to.
The Freebies are: Boris Continuum Complete, DigiEffects Delirium (DE FireWorks and DE Glower), Digital Anarchy Screen Text, Digital Tools (WarmCool), Red Giant (IL Alpha Ramp), The Foundry (T LensBlur), and Walker Effects (WE Premultiply)
Lastly, would installing any of these old effects possibly cause conflicts and crashes.

You're correct that the old AE 6.5 plugins are just too old for CS4 compatibility.  Note that even now we're all getting around the fact that CS4 plugins don't work in CS5!
There are a number of ways to unmultiply/premultiply layers.  I usually precompose the layer in question, then duplicate the precomp-ed layer and assign it as Luminance Track Matte to the first.
The most common third party Lens Flare Plugins, Red Giant's Knoll Lens Flare and Video Copilot's Optical Flares, both have unmult capabilities built into them, which is why many standalone unmult plugins haven't been updated over the past few years. 
But Red Giant Software still offer a free version of UnMult.  It's labelled as AE 7 compatible - you could try it and see if it works in 6.5.

    elo! i have a question regarding using timers in midp 2.0.. i have a series of frames for my player in order to show its "walking effect" on the screen. i used timer.shedule(TimerTask, long, long) and it showed the "walking effect" almost perfect. now, i have series of frames for my attack sequence (a player holding a sword for example).. is it possible to use different time delays between my frames? for example, i have 4 frames for my attack sequence, first frame for .5ms, second frame for 1ms, third frame for .7ms and so on..?

    TimerTasks are not a very good way to control animations in MIDP. You should learn how to use a thread to run a game loop, and control the animation from there. For example:

    }But in general, having frames taking different amounts of time is not a very good idea. It will complicate the code too much. Instead have a frame sequence where if one frame has to take longer, you just repeat it. So if your walking animation has 4 frames that need to be displayed for 20 ms each, and your attack frame has one frame that needs to be displayed for 15 ms, a second frame for 30 ms, and a third frame that needs to be displayed for 35 ms - you can time your frames for each 5 ms. and have the following frame sequences:
    walking: {1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,4,4,4,4}
    attaking: {1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,3,3,3}
    Every 5 ms you update the screen and look into the frame sequence array to decide which frame to draw. Check out the Sprite class' documentation (javax.microedition.lcdui.game.Sprite), as it has a good explanation of this technique.
    (btw, unless the game is very very simple, one frame every 5 ms is not a very realistic figure on real phones)

    From your description, I would like to verify if you have done some changes for GroupB distribution group. Ensure that "[email protected]" is added to the "accept list" in GroupB's message delivery
    restrictions.

  • After Effects to Final Cut

    I have created an animated logo in After Effects and exported as Animation codec at 100% with an alpha channel. When I import in FCP it looks fine in the source window. I mark my in and out and insert and the whole thing gets jagged. It gets even worse when I render and export. This is viewing it on and NTSC monitor as well and not just computer screen. I know usually I would just go from FCP to After Effects and I would be done but the job I am working on will be on the road and I will not have After Effects available so I need to create my After Effects first and then pop into FCP on the road. The same After Effects files look great if I import them into my Avid system.

    have you tried changing the alpha type?
    when you bring it in to FCP the alpha is 'straight'... trying bringing the animation into the viewer, go to Modify>Alpha Type > and change it to Black...
    Also, when you export, on the Video Output, try changing the Color from Premultiplied (matted) to Unmatted...

  • After Effects PNG Sequence Error Help Please

    When I try to render a png sequence I got the following errors

  • How to create effect in illustrator

    I am trying to create this image on illustrator, if someone can tell me how, what i tired to do was create a grid, using the rounded rectangle tool,  making them about 30 px by 30 px with about 5 px space between them,  then use the 3d rotate tool, and get something close, but on the picture  the gap seems to curve a little, and with the gird i get strait lines,  how would i get that slight curve effect, if someone can send me a link that can walk you though would be great.

    If you're careful and manipulate the Bloat tool settings properly you can create some bit of that curvature to
    the grid, if your grid is created with the level of detail as in your sketch.

    Also take note how the background clouds seem to move indipendent to the subject that has been altered in editing. That effect is way cool.

  • MEDIA MANAGER NOT HANDLING AFTER EFFECTS 7.0 RENDERS

    Media Manager works on my captured DV footage. However, when using an After Effects QT movie copy of my credits, it failed. I spent several hours on this since it initially was my "test."
    I gave up then tried my captured footage, canceling before actually processing it. Voila! I could finally see a change in the bar graphs. Any ideas why this happened? Can't insert a screenshot of my afx settings (ugh!) so I've typed them. Thanks for helping!!!

    There can be problems with media manager if your source clips do not have a reel associated with them (as happens with imported files as opposed to captured material). Try creating a tape name in the browser for these clips. This may solve your problem.

  • Effects in Photoshop elements 8

    How do you restore the effects when you delete them in error.
    Or, is there a place to update effects for this program?

    You don't say which OS you are using.
    You have to delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file. This file will take several minutes...maybe up to 10... to rebuild so be patient. From what I understand, you must delete this file not just simply rename it.
    1. Start by closing  Elements.
    2. Navigate to MediaDatabase.db3 file.
    3. Delete MediaDatabase.db3 file.
    4. Lauch Elements...and leave it alone for about 10 minutes while the MediaDatabase file rebuilds.
    If on a PC, you have to first "show hidden files and folders" as the file you need to delete and rebuild to get your effect back is in a hidden folder. Note: I recommend changing this setting back to "do not show hidden files and folders" once you have deleted the MediaDatabase.db3 file.

    What was used to get the great coloring - very bright/sauturated?  Was iT saturation of certain colors only?
    The very orange horizon/sunset effect?
    The clothes 'falling' of the actress while she is walking, changing into other clothes
    Clothes falling of her when she is getting out of the car
    This is really a great promo and as a novice After Effects user, I would love to know how these were created (what effects/plugins/etc).

    Way over your head, if you are just a beginner...
    What was used to get the great coloring - very bright/sauturated?  Was iT saturation of certain colors only?

    Elaborate color correction.
    The clothes 'falling' of the actress while she is walking, changing into other clothes
    Clothes falling of her when she is getting out of the car
    Green screen shooting, 3D matchmoving, 3D animation, corrective warping, morphing and masking.
    All of these are advanced techniques which you won't be able to pull of on your own, even if you had worked with AE for years already. This requires a qualified team and a lot of planning and involves much more than just throwing on a few effects on possibly poorly shot footage...

  • Help! Trouble applying video effects

    Hi. Hope someone can help me!
    I can't seem to apply video filters to my clips in FCP. I've tried everything, including various methods for applying filters and trying different filter types. The only thing that seems to work is when I add an effect to the master clip (not ideal!), and even this method fails as soon as I drag the clip from the viewer into the timeline. Then, poof! No effects!
    I don't understand why this is happening.
    I'm using Mac OS 10.4.11 and FCP 5.0.4.

    If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://www.fcprescue.com and run it.

    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.

  • Program design flaw in After Effects - Position

    I am having a heck of a time getting my credits to scroll up properly. A major problem is the program automatically adds a keyframe point every time one moves things. My credits start and stop at bizarre places, and at more places than there appears to be key frames,or they go in the wrong direction and then change direction on their own accord. And the process of placing or modifying the start and finish positions of the text is not at all intuitive. I cannot even figure out whether the first keypoint is supposed to be the start, or finish point.Yes, I've watched the videos, and read the help, but I would be grateful for some simple instruction how I can get a long credit to scroll.
    Also, there seems to be no master command to disengage or delete all command information for say position. I have been using the revert function, but one should be able to cancel everything at once if desired.

    I've seen your desperate posts from the past few days, and I gotta tell you: I can feel your pain, but you really are trying to jump into the deep end of the pool, and your lack of basic AE knowledge is like wearing lead weights when you jump in.  It doesn't help that AE is definitely NOT an application you can use intuitively, nor does it help that AE's online help is more of a reference tool than it is a learning tool... Adobe really has to work on that.
    AE has its own way of thinking.  Its own arcane lexicon.  Its own way of solving a problem.  It's really tough for a beginner to grasp that.  While many applications have a quick-start, get-your-feet-wet set of instructions, AE doesn't.  It really demands that you walk before you run, that you learn the basics before you launch off into the fun stuff.  You can't define a trick you want to learn and expect to find a step-by-step how-to.
    So how do you learn the basics?  Forget about AE's online help: as mentioned earlier, it's a reference work, not a textbook.  Here's an example: you can look up "French Language" in the encyclopedia and find a wealth of information about its history, a brief description of syntax, the origin of words, etc. but you won't learn French out of an encyclopedia.  You take a French class, invest in Rosetta Stone, get a French language textbook... a variety of things.  When starting to learn French, you don't make your first project a written critique of the works of Jean-Paul Sartre.  The same applies to learning AE.  It really is a lot like learning a foreign language.
    Here are some other learning options... but they all require learning the basics first: it's a fact of life in AE-Land.
    Todd's Getting Started link is a good beginning point, but it's no good if you're impatient.  You've got to go through it, and not cherry-pick what YOU think is important.  You'll probably be wrong.  There are also certain things that are lacking because it's all free, and the topics can be hit-and-miss.
    You say there's nothing like a book.  Fortunately, two highly-respected AE practitioners, Chris and Trish Meyer, have a set of books available for various AE versions.  They've been with After Effects since Version 1.  With the possible exception of CS 5.5, you'll find a fine "Learn AE" book by the Meyers, and it's just a google away.  The Meyers' books almost always come with footage and project files so you can play along at home.  I swear by these books for identifying the Basic Concepts And Things You Need To Know.  Again, patience is the watchword.
    There are quite a few books out besides the Meyer's works, and I've found them on the shelf at Barnes and Noble.  You can check 'em out yourself.  You might even find one called After Effects For Dummies, and you shouldn't take offense: EVERYBODY'S a dummy when they first begin learning AE.
    Total Training has AE training DVDs, and they're also highly-regarded.  I used them back when I was first learning AE (and I continue to learn AE to this day).  They too come complete with footage and project files.

    Lynda.com also offers AE training, but I've never used it.
    That's a pretty good list of popular ways to learn After Effects, but each one stresses that learning the basics is essential.  Many have tried to learn AE the way you're currently doing it, and they've either failed, given up on AE (a real shame) or accepted that they need to learn it the recommended way.
    While you might not like what I just wrote, that's the situation: you learn AE a certain way, which may not be the way you want.  That's just the truth of it.

  • Special effects (without 3rd party plugins)

    So, I am now happy with time manipulartion (using Twixtor), workflow for my project (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4728201#4728201) and the new PC hardware that we have. I am now coming to the point where the few actual special effects we want for out project need to be investigated. Most of the project will be Green screen compositing work of our characters in their sets, and I am pretty comfortable with creating space scenes in AE - there are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials on that one - and some of the scenes will have them walking around "real life" environments. The bulk of the effects I forsee now, will be Fire, Smoke, Clouds and rocks.
    Fire and smoke, I am busy looking towards either recodring our own footage, or purchasing footage from Video CoPilot or someone - my actual qustion is, can I create realistic looking rocks in AE without any third party plug ins? Say for instance, a volcano erupts, and I want rocks blowing and falling around - can this be done believable without a dedicated 3D program? If so, does anyone have a link to some tutorials on it, or even just an idea of where I can start?

    thanks for all the replies - once again (and I guess I knew this before I posted the question - but thought that squeezing my eyes shut and clipping my heels together might allow a different outcome) I see that the answer is completely dependant on what it is I want After Effects to do for me. I have been in the IT industry for many many years now, but never have I come accross a piece of software quite as versatile and far ranging as After Effects! I am learning every day, and enjoying every moment of it (although it starts getting a liitle overwhelming and scary at times). I am going to spend this week runnign through trapcode tutorials, so that I can figure out exactly what the products can do, and then I have arranged a team sit down next week to check through each and every script, make a list of effects required, and balance that out against what I have learned form the products. I will look at a few other products as well, not just Red Giant. I'll admit off the bat, I love Video CoPilots stuff, simply because the Andrew makes the demos and tutorials look so darn good and interresting - wether we would ever use a fresh apple element, with a mercury texture...who knows - but I still want it!
    Anyway, thanks again - you have all given me tons of places to go and look, and after a week or so, if my brain has not exploded form all the input, Ill add a small outcome to the thread - for interrest sake.

    I'm rendering DSLR footage out of After Effects for editing and grading. I have every clip in it's own comp with the Neat Video denoising plugin applied and some film grain, and I'm rendering every comp individually as DNxHD. The problem is that each comp seems to taken significantly longer to render than the one before it. For example, the first comp I rendered was about 11 minutes long and took a little under 2 hours. The next was only about 10 minutes long, but took 5 hours. I've even walked into the office in the morning to find comps on pace to take 10 hours. I'm rendering off a 2013 iMac with 24 GBs of RAM and a 3.5 GHz i7 processor rendering onto a 4 TB thunderbolt G-Raid. I have 18 GBs of Ram allocated to AE, and mulitprocessing enabled. Any ideas? I'm assuming there's some aspect of memory management that I'm not using properly. I should also point out that when I start rendering, the fan on my iMac goes into overddrive, but when I come in the next day everything is whisper quiet. Could my computer be overheating a scaling back it's work load?

    Here's a workflow idea:
    You can import a Premiere project into AE and it makes a composition with each cut on its own layer. So you could import your edit into AE and maintain all of the cuts. (As mentioned, you won't have transitions in place, but a dissolve is easy enough to create in AE.)
    There are scripts out there (like VideoCopilot's Trim Compose script) that will make a composition for each layer (each cut, in this case) and you can then render each cut out with your noise removal.
    You could then import those files into Premiere to carry on with your XML to Resolve workflow and you won't have rendered hours of noise removal out of AE that you'll never use.
    Another option is to skip putting each clip into its own composition and simply render the whole thing out and then grade that. Alternatively, you could precompose whole scenes in AE and render those out.
    Another, entirely different thought, would be to use Color Finesse in AE to do your color grading. But, if you're familiar with Resolve, you might prefer that.

    The fire effect that I created in the example was
    A 32 Bit Project
    A solid with Fractal Noise pre-composed
    The pre-Comp with Colorama and turbulent displace
    Another nested comp with Fractal noise used as a displacement map
    A duplicate of the nested comp with blur and Colorama
    The footage of a very small flame with a huge blur overlaid using the add mode to give flickering color values to the fire
    A little more blur and Colorama, hue/saturation, Tri-Tone and probably some other color effects on other layers
    Pre-composed all of the above and then duplicated the footage layer, but the fire pre-comp in between the copies.
    Roto the boy walking in on the top copy of the footage layers
    Some light wrap generated with the alpha from the roto, some blur and some more layers.
    Manipulation of opacity blurs and color.
    A bunch of other masks and color effects on duplicates of the fire, the footage and the light wrap layers to complete the effect.
    I don't have the file in front of me but this is a fairly good representation of the 12 step and probably 15 or 20 layer comp it took to pull off the final fire effect. The shot as you see it was then further color graded to enhance the believability of the shot. As Mylenium said fire is not a single click magic button effect even if you pay for a plug-in that specifically was designed to create fire.
    To tell you the truth, even compositing footage of real fire in a scene is a lot more than just a couple of layers and a matte. I've also done that on several projects and it always involved 8 or 10 layers to make it look 'real' to my standard of production.
