Wasted space in .approject files

From what I can tell, the approject file does not shrink if photos are removed from it. Can anyone confirm this is a bug?
Example...
1.. Take any project with a decent number of photos
2.. Check the size of the approject, AP.Minis, AP.Thumbnails and AP.Tinies files
3.. Delete a portion of those photos
4.. Recheck the sizes of those files..
Results:
the approject is slightly smaller due to the folders per file being deleted
the AP.Minis, Thumbnails, and Tinies files are the same size..
Example:
Project starts with 734 photos
File sizes are 377 mb, 69.5 mb, 228.5 mb, and 1.1 mb respectively
Delete some, project now has 624 photos
File sizes are 366.3 mb, 69.5 mb, 228.5 mb, and 1.1 mb respectively
I would assume that after deleting ~15% of the photos, that the project was ~15% smaller.. (adding photos to a project does work roughly in line..)
Instead, the file is *ONLY 3% smaller*.. it SHOULD be in the 320mb range, but instead is ~366, roughly 46 mb of wasted space..
Note: I generally delete at least 1/2 of the photos in every project.. So I'm willing to bet that roughly 45% of my 29.58 GB Aperture Library is wasted.. That probably has an effect on overall performance, and definitely is chewing up too much space on my laptop. I need those 15 GB back, please give me a way to claim that space.
Note 2: Do the same test, and delete all of the photos in the project. the AP.* files do not shrink. The project with 0 photos still occupies ~300 mb worth of space.
At the very least, Aperture needs a way to "Compact" project files. Preferably at the project and global levels (i.e. all projects in one shot). I have rebuilt the database recently, and that did not improve this situation.

I haven't tried deleting the AP.* files as of yet, and letting Aperture rebuild them. I'm going to guess this might work, though given I have over 250 projects, I'm not looking forward to the "show package contents", manually delete files, let Aperture reprocess them x 250 times.. Perhaps I'll be better off doing it through the command prompt.
And even if this does work, it's bound to be hundreds of times slower to rebuild every single thumbnail (roughly 100k of them) than it would be to compact each AP.* file, removing the empty/unused entries.
This is poor design/implementation/bug in my opinion (as a software developer for the past 17 years..)

Yes.
Ignore the Canon software. It gains you nothing and adds complexity. Just use iPhoto for the lot.

Re: settings -- how to reduce waste space at top of page to one line only

I find that the wide screens are too short so it seems like more scolling is needed since less of web page is viewable and this problem is made worse by waste space taken up by various lines - for example on my firefox page, there is a blue line at the top that currently says "ask a question" Firefox help etc and then the rest of the line is blank -- about 70% of space not used/needed
The second line down shows: File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help -- then about 70%waste space -- rest of line is blank -- How can we put stuff from various lines into one or two lines Max ?
To continue, in my case, the next line has a couple of tabs -- this is useful -- maybe if there could be an easy way to show tabs in their own line when lots of various pages need to be open but when need max space viewable below to click a dropdown to push tabs up to end of next line above (in the waste space)
Finally, my page has the 4th line taken up by the Forward and Back arrows, the web address line, and then a shorter box called iLivid Web Search with a magnifying glass and then a little box at the end of a house -- which I use all the time to go to my home page for new tabs opened
I think it would be cool if we could easily elim all but the blue line and one more line by pushing stuff in line 3 and 4 up into line 1 (blue line) and line 2
My much older IE version had a feature you could drag the lines up they would do what I am saying with all the lines except the blue line at the top -- then when it compressed thje info, it would just show part of title and then a little // sort of button to click to see or expand a part of the line to read it all if needed
It seems likely this has mostly been solved but I can not seem to figure how to use the settting and buttons on my firefox page to accomplish these changes easily back and forth
From my looking at it, these features need to be available when you right click on each line but maybe my version8 is not set up quite right
so any and all assistance is greatly appreciated

50 gigs of wasted space on VU32 X61

I have X61 with Vista ultimate 32 with 3 gigs ram and upgraded processor.
When I first got this computer, it had fatal errors resulting in 3 full reinstalls. Actually, lenovo had sent me CDs for the wrong computer initially and only later sent me recovery DVDs for VU32. However, the third and last time that I needed to do this--approximately a year ago, i realized that it no longer even asked me for DVDs when reformatting through thinkpad R&R...it is all saved onto hard drive. So I have like 50 gigs of wasted space on a 160 gig 7200 rpm hard drive. The only partition is the 5 gig one that was initially there.
So...all to ask: is there any way of opening up this space and deleting windows install files as it seems to be working these days. Or is this Vista's insurance policy--making me prepared for a possible fatal crash in the future?

Exfat drive does not free up space after deleting files

My external exfat formatted drive does not free up space after deleting files using a mac....however if I delete files using a PC, it will free up space.
I've even tried the *erase free space* using Disk Utility, but nothing.....
Thoughts/Suggestions??

I ran WhatSize and here is the result. Oddly, it says there is 40.2 GB used (in the top-left) which conflicts with the information directly below it: "Capacity 108 GB, Used 103GB, Available 4.27 GB". Not so helpful.
Disk Inventory X solved the problem, however. Much thanks! I wasted most of my weekend troubleshooting this sad issue. Anyway, Disk Inventory X revealed a bug where my external hard drive for photos was still appearing as a mounted volume, even though the HD was no longer connected. Freaky.
After moving it to the trash and deleting it, I've recovered the space.

Can't email files with spaces in the file name since 10.5.2 upgrade

Not sure if this is a bug with Leopard or I'm being stupid (possibly the later) but... Has anyone else experienced this issue and do you know what is causing it? I am currently unable to send a file that has a space in the file name. The only change on my system that has occurred since I last sent and email in a similar way is I've updated my OS from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2. Any ideas how to fix it?

Sorted. Well sort of. I still have the problem but I know why. Apparently O2 will not allow anyone to send an attachment which has a space in the name. They claim that this reduces spam - no idea why they think that will stop spam but there you go...

How to add new text and an empty space before a file name with Automator

I can create a new service to add to multiple files some text before the file name but I need to add even an empty space; e.g. file name original becomes: new text(space)file name original. The aim is to add this text and space to multiple files.

This is an old Apple-supplied AppleScript that will do the job.
IMPORTANT: note the conditions of use: it will choose the frontmost Finder window to operate on. Therefore, open the folder you want to change the names of and make it the front finder window BEFORE running the script.

Printing Docs - how to get rid of 3 inch wasted space on right side of page

After trying several different settings and printed only the first page until I got the print more or less the way I wanted it, however...
I have a standard HP Color Laserjet 2600n, looked at all the printing preferences, and all four margins are set at (.25 inch), yet when the pages print out there are about 2.5 inches of wasted space on the left side. The space is there for the Table of Contents, but there is nothing printed there, the space is blank.
So I clicked on the Table of Contents header, so the TOC became hidden and the window only contained the text and images, then when I tried to print, I found that now there were about 3 inches of white space on each page on the right hand side. This is somewhere around a 40% waste in paper, trees, etc.
One would think that expensive as printing is, there would be a way to save paper by optimizing coverage on each page as much as possible.
Another curious thing is that the size of the text on the screen is easy to read at Safari normal (default) settings, yet when the first page is printed the text is really small.
In order to get the size of the print on the paper to be easily readable, I had to click on the large [a][A] at the top of the Safari window twice (+ 2 sizes). The text on the window was fairly large, but the print became easy to read. There was still an excessive amount of wasted space, which just goes against the grain...
Does anybody have a clue how to get rid of all the wasted space on each page ? There has to a simple way, this is 2010 and we've been doing this for 25+ years now.
I am sure it is something simple that I am overlooking ? I'd be grateful for any help.

What browser are you using? Try downloading a PDF if one is available, or try printing from XCode's Deveoper Documentation window.

The Organizer does not support the color space in the file

I just purchased and installed PSE 8 as an upgrade to PSE 6. My catalog correctly shows all of my existing images. However, when I try to import photos into the Organizer, I get a message that nothing was imported. The reason given is that "The Organizer does not support the color space in the file." This happens with photos taken on my iPhone as well as those from my Canon PowerShot A1100 IS. Any suggestions?

It turns out that this problem went away after the program crashed. Everything seems to be working well now.

How do i remove an Update notification? I do not want to update to the latest iOS (Asian languages) which is useless to me and I don't want to waste space on my iPad. I want to be able to "Select All" instead of doing each update individually.

Is there any reason not to use spaces in document file names anymore in a document library?

We are revamping our sharepoint document library file naming conventions. In lots of blogs and tutorials, I have seen over and over the recommendation to use underscores instead of spaces in document file names in sharepoint. Part of this is I think to prevent
the infamous %20 in URLs pointing to the documents. That doesn't really concern us and we don't generally have file names that approach 256 characters. We don't want to go the route of having different document names than document titles so we want our
document names to be a clear and readable as possible. We think that using spaces (and occasionally dashes) in the file names makes them more readable, and sharepoint 2010 seems to be able to search these file name correctly. An example document file
name would be "elephants - how to clean elephant cages".
Has anyone run into a reason to avoid using spaces and dashes in document file names in sharepoint 2010? I don't want to start using spaces and then be sorry I did down the road. Thanks!

It isn't going to lead to the fall of western civilisation.
You will get longer and messier URLs for documents but it's very unlikely to cause issues. There have been some bugs in the past where hyphens in particular can be mis-encoded in searches but they only affect a small range of build numbers if memory serves.
I much prefer using no spaces for document libraries as it makes the starting URLs so much cleaner but that's a style question. For documents unless you've got a very strict document naming standard spaces are common and dashes aren't uncommon.

i have created a log file which contain the logs of a program. the logs are getting created fine for the first execution of the program but from the second time the log file is getting blank space's after every character.
i have used the code to append the text in log files few examples :

How to remove empty space from a file

Hi all,
Can any one help on how to remove the blank spaces from a file.
I used trim function but unable to remove the spaces.
I have a file in which there is a name like 'JAIRAM' and am storing this file in a variable FILE_CONTENTS.
Now am unable to compare FILE_CONTENTS with another value as it is storing empty spaces also from the file.
Please help on this

Trim only trim at the beginning or at the end. Can you try using the replace sql function.. see below..

D3lphin / konqueror - too much free space between single files

Hi there,
I'm using Kdemod 3.5.9. The problem I experience is, that both d3lphin and konqueror create "gaps" between files. Its hard to explain, so I post a picture.
The picture shows my wallpaper collection - but the problem is not bound to images. It does also occur with dirs, videos, sound-files...
By changing the font and grid-size I was able to change the general free space between files, but the "extra space" between some files remains.
Any Idea?

@funkyou At first thanks for your work because after recognizing that you have things as at example kdmtheme included i give kdemod a try and it works nice. Instead of your theme looks very cool i stay as before with qtcurve ... i hope this is not a problem for you. [If you want you can do a +1kdemod/-1kde in your survey ]

I have exact the same settings as you with the only exception that Sub-Pixel-Hinting is on but i have the same effect as yodo. I fear that if dpi (or/and fonts) could be a problem in this case than the content of "/etc/fonts/conf.avail" could be important too. But i don't realy think that this is the problem because the icons on the desktop don't have this problem.
My workaround is stepping to the Tree View (i hope this is the correct translation of "Mehrspaltige Ansicht") and i forgot it because i like this more and more.
