Hi everyone,
I am implementing an account enrollment webpage. I have a initial page (form) where users can enter the information and click Submit. I use POST method and final page will be displayed once the data is processed and account is opened. If the process takes more time, users are clicking Submit again and we see multiple accounts being opened for the same user. I would like to know how to avoid this. Few ideas I have are:
1. Don't let users click second time - I could not disable submit button. Instead I wrote a java script which will not do anything from second click onwards. But, if users presses stop button and tries to click Submit, it will not do anything also.
2. Stop the transaction - Store session id of being processed tasks and if another task is using same session id, do not continue the transaction. I did not try it, but not sure whether web server will get response from first task or second task. Has anyone tried this before?
3. Show dummy page which says "processing..." and once process is complete, show the final page. How can I implement this in Forte?
Please let me know if there are any other ways to solve this problem.
We use Forte WE 1.0.D.3 and Forte 3.0.L.3.

Ramarao,
You can keep track of a list of sessions that are currently being processed.
The best place to put this list is in your Webaccess SO. Everytime a new
request comes in, you can look-up the session id of the request to see if it
is being processed and take an appropriate action.
From a purists' point of view I would extend this design and create a custom-key on the session instead of using the session itself to indicate
the busy-status. If your application restricts one login per user then you
can base this "busy-list" on user-ids instead of sessions.
Remember, the caveat of this approach is the overhead of maintaining this
list. In order for this list to be accurate and dependable, you will have to
'delete' the session entry every time before assigning the response to the
request.

BW Bex query and Webi question

Hi All.
Just a quick question on Bex queries. We are selecting a Bex query as a source for universe. However on the webi side we only want to see a subset of the data.
1) The question is Would this rerun the entire BEX query on the BW side ? Or is there a better way to design the universe ?
2) Also are there any best practices on how to desing Webi reports from BW BEX queries and also Infocubes etc ?

The WebI builds a query on the BEx results. The query is related only to those items used in the WebI report. However, the BEx query must have the results in it, as the WebI does not execute it. I am not aware of a best practices document.

Font for Web question

In the past I have used PS CS's text and saved the file as an image (with a black background for a black webpage)to use on a the page page. Now I am re-doing my website and I think I should be using Illustrator. Is that correct or is there a way to use the PS document on a web page other than what I did (made and image out of it). I like the PS document I have made and the effects it has so I would like to use it if possible.
Any input is helpful.

Illustrator has no tools for saving a file for the web in vector format (other than SVG, which I don't recommend getting into). You save as GIF, JPG, or PNG, just as you would for Photoshop, and vectors are rasterized in all these formats.
As Bart says, you would use Illustrator if you wanted to make use of some of its unique drawing capabilities.
The alternative, if we are talking real text here, and not just a few words in headings or logos, is to use HTML to produce the text. This will allow many benefits, including allowing Google to catalog the content and improve your rating, and to allow users who need it to enlarge text for easier reading. As well, HTML text usually looks better than image text.

Save For Web Question

How do I get photoshop to stop adding hyphens to file names when I
save to web

I find it convient to use this option to save png, gif and jpg for
local powerpoint use and I have mutiple old macros in these Powerpoint
that require certain file names. I am forced to remove the hyphens
since rewrtting all the macros are a bit of a pain

General Web Question - Image Upload Website Connection Fails

Curious thing...
Using Tablet on WiFi - connected...
I can upload an image etc...
But it seems when I am on 4G - it will not upload an image and times out - saying website connection lost...
I know this is vague - but I'm perplexed... As the other sites on the tablet run fine...
The upload image portion is a popup screen...
So wondering if I'm having connectivity problems or what...

If you are talking about a JEE application or any application that uses the HTTP protocol and HTML (XHTML too), no it is not possible to upload an entire folder at once just by naming the folder. All you can do is let the user identify individual files to be uploaded, though you CAN have more than one file uploaded in a single submission.
This is a security feature of HTTP and HTML - nothing gets uploaded that the user didn't EXPLICITLY name. It protects you from having websites steal data from your computer without your knowledge and permission. This is enforced by the browser.
Can you get around this? Yes, there are a few ways. Instead of writing a web application that uses HTML, you could write a Java applet. When an applet runs, the user must give it permission to run - since it is actually executing on the user's machine, not the server. When it tries to do certain tasks with security implications, like access the user's file system, the user must again give permission. The user can choose to be asked every time, or give permanent authorization. But at that point the applet can do anything that any application on the user's machine can do.
Or you could configure Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) on your web server, which extends the HTTP protocol to allow users to read and write files on certain DAV-enabled folders on the web server. Windows Explorer knows how to connect DAV-enabled websites as if they were file servers. Oracle also provides a few ways to use DAV to upload and download data to and from the database, through XMLDB and through the OraDAV module of Oracle Application Server.

Mark of the Web Question

Can someone please clarify something on the new Mark of the
Web option on WebHelp output in RH6? Even though the option is
available when generating WebHelp output, the resulting output does
not appear any different than it did with RH X5 for the same
project (and still does not work with our VB app on a local machine
when the Active X security option is turned off). Now I see the
What's New in This Release topic in the RH6 help file lists WebHelp
Pro, FlashHelp, and FlashHelp Pro as the layouts that support Mark
of the Web. No WebHelp. So does Mark of the Web work for WebHelp or
not? Do I have to change my output to WebHelp Pro to get mark of
the web? If so, what other implications are there for switching
from WebHelp to WebHelp Pro? Does this mean I have to buy RH6
Server instead of plain RH6?

Since we are speaking of the WOM feature, I am having some
diffculties with this feature too but with totally different
symptoms and ouput:
It is the Webhelp pro output that is causing me a headache:
when I add this feature and the web app calls on the help using an
online webhelp pro call (
http://server/roboAPI.asp?project=projectname
or
http://server/roboAPI.asp?project=projectname&context=ID>context)
the help page fails to load. Just a white htm page and exporer 7
seems to be lost and confused... Any ideas?

General web question

Hi,
I'm looking for the example code or package for web page index when displaying search result.
One good example of this is the www.google.com. Whenever the search result more than 10 items, then the 'page index' will be provided to display the subsequece result.
Is there anyone can recommend an example code which can be downloaded, please reply here.

Do a google search (hehe) on Information Retrieval (IR) and Information Extraction (IE), natural language parsing techniques... I have developed code for IE (kind of a super-ask-jeeves), but search engines use IR (here are 1000000 hits, i'm sure its in here somewhere), and I haven't really done much with it. Search engines use things like Wordnet to generate the query based on synonyms of the words you have entered, bring them back to their base using 'stemming', and then order the results according to the number and combination of query words found in each doc.
That should get you started conceptually.

Creating Images for Web, question about settings, etc.

Okay before someone tells me "use the search function or google", let me say this...i already have.
I am looking for a guide or anything to ALL settings and recommendations for photoshop cs4.
I find different examples and such but nothing that is "great" and exactly what I need.
When creating a new file that will be used for the web. Logo, site graphics, etc. what are the best
settings when creating a new document? recommended settings for anything from the resolution, color mode
to the "pixel aspect ration" under advanced.
Basically I just need to do this part my self, i am pretty familiar with photoshop but just never took the time to actually know 100% of the best
settings that i should use.
I just want to be able to create the high quality images i can for my website,
I use .png for the most part {because i need transparency for several items}.
but I notice that alot of times it has that little bit of blurryness to it, i tried messing with the resolution, i tried resize, i tried alot of things.
my BIGGEST frustration and what ultimately led me to come to these forums was the use of the font, no matter what , my font always always always looks a bit blurry. what can i do to take this effect of blurryness away?
any and all help is appreciate and i give a thanks in advance!

The best setting for the issues you describe is to work on your art in Photoshop at a 100% view and to place in a web page at 100%. Do not try to scale the images with HTML/CSS.

Google sitemap - neurotic web question

Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to follow the directions given to create a google sitemap. When I enter my URL into neurotic web I don't get a list of all my sites, I just see a list showing the main URL. I click on the + sign next to my url listing and nothing happens. I fear this means that there is something wrong with my site, though all the links work in the site itself so that can't be the case. But why doesn't neurotic web see my links so that I can put the + sign next to them and create my list?
AND.....I have verified my site. The main page appears when searching for it by name or by the content on the main page, but the content on the other pages can't be found through google. Will the other pages just appear magically over time if I don't do a sitemap? If so, I'm willing to just hang on until that happens. If not I have a problem. Most of my important content is on the other pages.
If it matters my site is www.pantherpeakbindery.com and, again, I have verified it through google and that went well.
Any help would be appreciated. Doing this stuff is fun for a few hours but then it becomes a bit tiresome -- ignorance isn't always bliss, it seems.

The above is the sitemap format for the main pages of your website. Copy and paste this into TextEdit and then save it as a plain text file in Unicode UTF-8 format. You can add any additional links that are on each page simply by copy and pasting those links within the same format of the sitemap.xml document. (Just add them before the </urlset> tag. Also make sure that each URL has the <url><loc> and </loc></url> enclosing tags.)
The idea behind this is that if the spiders can't find your links, then you put the links in yourself. That, ultimately, is the purpose of making a sitemap... to let the spiders know exactly where the links are.

Exporting for web question

OK, I'm sorry to ask this one; I'm sure it's been asked hundreds of times.

I Web Question

I have just begun to use a Mac after years of Windows. I have created webpages in Macromedia's Dreamweaver program. How do I open up those websites in IWeb? Everytime I open IWeb, it forces me to choose from a template and not to choose an existing webpage.
This is IWeb 08 on a laptop running Leopard.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am not quibbling about Iweb's easy to use program, but when you have a number of pre-existing websites that your responsible for maintaining, it becomes important to have something to edit what you have and not reinvent the wheel, so to speak. So when I begin to create webpages from this point forward, I will give it a try.

Bank row was added in webi rich client when using excel as data provider

reproduding steps:
1.open webi rich client.
2.Create a new webi report,then select "local data source"
3.select an excel file as data source.
4.run query.
For example,there are 5rows in excel,but in webi report there are 6 rows,and the last row is bank which is added by webi.

RAW to Jpeg quality looks fine in Aperture not so good on Web page

I am using the latest version of Aperture with the Retina display. The Raw images look tremendous, after I resize the image and save it to jpeg the image still looks good. When I upload to a web page the image looks horrible. There is a lot of noise and the image over all looks blurred. I open it in Aperture and it looks fine. What is the issue? I have tried the different settings when saving the image and nothing works. I have also saved the image in a tif format and still the same issue. Looks great in aperture not so great on the web. Please help if possible.

Your site is likely re-sampling your file, perhaps because it is too large. Ask the Webmaster what size and quality to make the JPGs, and export to that. There may also be a browser issue.
If you provide some details re: exactly how your are exporting, which site you are using, how the JPG is used, etc., someone here may be able to provide additional guidance -- but this seems to be a Web question, as Aperture -- from what you say -- is working well for you.

Editing Buttons in an Old Flash Movie

Hello,
I am trying to edit a Flash movie that was created several years ago (probably around 2002-2004ish), using ActionScript 1. It's a library map that shows Library of Congress subjects when you hover over the stacks buttons. Click on the BY SHELF button to see the action I wish to edit.
What I would like to do now is, instead of just the hover-over feature, I'd like to make each shelf button link to a Library of Congress search in our catalog when you click on it. However, when I try to edit the buttons, they won't appear in the ActionScript window, and I get the message "Current selection cannot have actions applied to it." I've read several forum and web questions regarding this, but I'm not using ActionScript 3, and I can't figure out how to open the button up and add code to it. Is this possible?

That is not a question, but I will try to explain the proper way to code a button.
Select the button on the stage, then enter a name for it in the Properties panel where it says "<Instance name>"... one word, no spaces in it. Let's say you name it "btn" (without quotes)
The button is now ready to have code assigned to it.
In the timeline create a layer that you will use for actionscript. In the frame of that new layer that is the same frame number as the button, assign code to the button by selecting the frame in the actionscript layer and typing the following in the Actions panel...
btn.onRelease = function(){
trace("this button works");
Once you have that working, replace the trace with whatever functionality you intend to code for the button.
To get rid of any code that might be attached to the button that was already there, select the button on the stage while the actions panel is open and you should see any code attached to the button. Attaching code to buttons is bad practice, so get rid of it and move it into the timeline in the timeline format.
