Website handoff questions

I am fairly new to flash/dreamweaver, and my firm just got
our website handed over to us from the people that originally
designed it. They said that they composed it in flash, but I can't
seem to open the file in either flash or dreamweaver. I've got a
.swf file and a .js file then the index.html file. When I try to
open the .swf in flash [located on our ftp server] flash says that
it can't find the file on the remote server [which I'm assuming is
the ftp/website]. I can get onto the ftp via flash/dreamweaver, so
I know that the connection is good. Also, what's the .js file,
javascript? Can anyone tell me how this plays into things? Thanks
for any help you can give to a newbie like me!!!

Tell them to give you the source fla (Flash) file. Otherwise
you have a bunch of stuff that you can't do jack squat with. I'd
imagine the .js file is the active content fix for the flash
content on IE browsers, but I'd need to see the site to be sure.
The html file is most likely just the holder for the swf file -
which you shouldn't have to update.
So, you need the flash file, not the compiled swf file. There
are ways to crack open the swf file to convert it to flash, but
your better off getting the source.

These look like "proof of design concepts" that were intended for a Flash site. Most likely it never got off the ground either because Flash is a dead web technology.
If you want to learn how to create good designs for the web, start studying basic web design theory, HTML and CSS. Later on, learn all you can about advanced CSS, HTML5 & client-side scripts for creating animations and interactive web pages (See Edge Animate).

Film Trailer for Website, exporting question!!!!

Hello.
I am new to conversion/compression from FCP. This may be a question for the Compressor forum but it takes forever to get a response there. I think my question will be simple for some of you.
I have a film trailer 1 min 50 sec in length. [Shot on Panasonic DVC30/29.97 frames] I need to put it on the film's website.
The main problem is this: I sent the trailer sequence to Quicktime Movies and Quicktime Conversion. I then choose the best out of the two. The quicktime movie (52 MB) played fine on my computer but I got responses saying that a lot of people could not play it on the website because of the current format. I attempted to use Compression and selected the MPEG-4 (highband connection). It came out blurry and distorted looking.
How do I convert my sequence for my website ???????????

There are two issues.
If you are using h.264 to encode, which did originally, then the PCs have to have QT 7 installed. If they don't they can't read the file.
Without QT installed, you can't view the movie on a PC if it is a QT movie.
So if that is what you want to encode to, then you have to provide a link to installed QT for the PCs that don't have it.

New to website creation- question on best application to use

I'm sorry about the off-topic nature of this question. I have some documents that I would like to publish, they have been scanned and are currently in .pdf format, as well as some .jpg pictures, and I also want to write a story around these objects as well, plus add some audio. I have iWeb, but am unsure if this is the best application to use, or given the content of what I would like to place on the website, if there is a better application to use? Any help most appreciated.

Bruce ~ It's hard to know whether an alternative app is "better" than iWeb for your particular purpose until you've tried it out. Two alternatives worth considering are the free, web-based Weebly — read more in this post:

MPLS provider Ethernet handoff question

Hi Everyone,
Here is what I am after from my ISP: I want MPLS with an Ethernet handoff, but do not want them to manage the router. I don't have to mess with bonding T1's or DS1's etc. due to past experience: It was always a battle of my WIC vs there smartjack being good or bad.
Here is my question:
These days, can providers typically hand off Ethernet so that I don't have to mess with bonding T1's or DS1's etc.?

Yes now providers are changing towards Ethernet handoffs but some providers would make this decision on the bandwidth requirement per site, for obvious reasons.

Multiple WebSite Hosting Question

I just purchased a new MAC Pro with OS X Leopard Server in Advanced Mode and I am trying to configure it to be a webserver only. I created all of my websites and everything looks correct but when I try and start the service I get an error message that pops up and says the following
"A service has encountered an error. Try to refresh the view (IP/Web). Report the problem to the administrator if it persists. (Could not start web service - details in error log.) 100002"
I look in the error log and I have a lot of SSL errors and I don't even have SSL enabled. I am also getting a Can't bind to IP:80 error. I need this server to run PHP/MySql. Could I uncheck all of the Modules except the PHP one? or will that create even more problems?

I removed the IP address and added 0.0.0.0 There is a legit IP in that place.

IWeb website security question

If I host a iWeb website on my own server, how secure is that?-> what I mean is can someone only access files on the site or can they access the whole Server (running 10.5.6, not OS X server)?

hello, i have the trial version and before i spend 400 bucks
i would like to get some quick answers please.
I curently have a website built and published and online.
However i built it through Frontpage, just to get it online. I now
want to spice it up and make it more appealing, hence me turning to
dream weaver.
Before i buy i was wondering,
is there a way to import a website from the internet (my url)
onto my dream weaver, so that i dont have to make a brand new page
and i can just change backround and add features.. etc.. Also the
website was made in front page so i wanted to know if that would be
a problem.

Yes. DW will allow you to connect to the current site, and
GET all the
files into your local root folder for the site. But - adding
features will
only cheapen your site, not spice it up.

Notwithstanding my above comment, if the host for the current
site has
disabled FTP access (many FP hosts do this), then you'll have
to use the
following procedure -
Before doing anything else, take a couple of weeks to
gothrough the DW
tutorials, and also to study HTML and CSS. The more you know
about those,
the easier your transition will be. DW expects alot more from
you than FP
did, and as a result, you may find it much more frustrating
to have the raw
reality of web development staring you in the face rather
than the wizards
of FP.

1. I'd define a Dreamweaver site that points to a location on
your hard
drive for the local site's root, and to the current FP site
on the web as
the remote site
2. I'd use Dreamweaver (if your host supports FTP
connections) to download
the remote site to the root of the site you just defined on
the hard drive.
This will pick up all the pages *after* webbot action so that
shared borders
and all are already present in the page HTML. This will also
pick up all of
the server scripting. Note - in the event that you are not
able to connect
using FTP since some FP hosts block that protocol, you will
have to use a
third party 'site copier' like Black Widow, QuadSucker, or
WebCopier, (or
even the DW extension called SiteAssist from WebAssist) to
connect and

3. I'd create a DW template for the pages, that captures the
"shared
border"
effect you had in FP.
4. I'd copy and paste content from each FP pages to a new

are saving the new child pages into the same local site as
the FP pages).
5. When the basic site is completed, I'd upload the new DW
pages to some
staging area/webspace, and by using the browser, I'd verify
that the site
(as it now exists remotely) is complete.
6. Then I'd create a *new* DW site in a new location on the
hard drive, and
connect to and download all the files from the staging site.
7. You can now delete the original FP site from your local
system if you
want.
You now have a complete site (minus any of the FP extension
server-side
code) that has no FP footprint.
If you have used any FP server extension functions on the
original FP site
(form processing, guestbooks, tables of contents, etc.), you
will have to
recreate those functions in DW using 3rd party scripts, or
scripts that you
write yourself.

Hello,
Relative rookie here looking for some info. Will dreamweaver
Mx allow me to build a site such as www.ada.net ?
Also and more importantly are there any good site for
templates? I am basically try to build the site listed above of
course using different names, colors and products.

The real question is "will your skill with HTML and CSS allow
you to use DMX
to build a site like that"? An inexperienced user using DMX
can only build
sites that would look like they were built by an
inexperienced user, doncha
know? But - can DMX allow you to build a site like that?

Website security question

I am only now thinking of this. . .
How secure it my website to hackers? Do I need to do anything to protect it from people messing with the content?
There is a Dubai-based website that keeps having serious issues with their forum - hackers get in and post pornographic messages, which is a huge no-no in the Middle East -- so the keep needing to completely close the site until they get things fixed.
I don't have a forum on my website and don't plan to add one, but is my site safe from the random jerk who just wants to mess with things? I obviously have the original files on my Mac so I could restore the files. . .but I'm still curious about how the security thing works.
Any thoughts?

Website hosting question

I am considering using iWeb 09 to build a site, but I have a question. Do I have to use Mobil Me to get all the features provided in iWeb, or can I use a 3rd party hosting provider? Are there specific requirements for a hosting provider?

My site is new. I just wanted to get some photos up and blog my thoughts. iWeb was handy so I grabbed it. I am definitely system savy - but I had no experience at all with html or site construction. I figured I would just live within the confines of the tool at hand.
Tell ya though. I suggest taking a couple days and investigating the alternatives. iWeb is very fast and easy - but it doesn't give you much room to move.
I did have my site up and running within about an hour of deciding to do one though - so it is definitely an easy tool to use.
Another limitation? Well I am looking into how to create an index for my blog. There is nothing native to iWeb that will do this. I may end up just creating a link set on a blank page - tying index descriptors to other pages that themselves link to various blog pages. A pain in the *** to maintain. But little other options with iWeb.
I am also looking at other tool kits now with the thought of migrating to it.

Our website is hosted in-house. The server has two NICs, one for outside communications, the other for internal communications.
The external is 192.168.1.108, internal is 192.168.1.100
At canyouseeme.org, port 80 is shown as being open.
Our static IP is 207.104.160.138 and the gateway is .137
Also, our public IP is marked as 207.104.160.139
How can I set this up so people can see our website?

If canyouseeme.org is using port 80, you should ensure that port 80 is open on your router...You need to use your static ip address:80 to see your website remotely...

Editorial content website - design questions

Hello everyone,
I am developing an editorial content website with some community functionalities. Currently i am working on the design part, API design and so on, but i am at an stage where i am not sure if i am following the right way.
I am using lots of interfaces, i have a "huge" main Content interface that defines a lot of common behaviour like:
getHeadLine()
getSummary()
getComments()
getAuthor()
getKeywords()and so on....
Then i have some content type interfaces extending Content like, Article, Gallery, Event, Comment, etc. I also have implementation classes for the content type interfaces (ArticleImpl, GalleryImpl, EventImpl, CommentImpl, etc).
I finnaly have defined common behaviour for all the content types as interfaces: Commentable, Rateable, Viewable and so on.
I would like to ask you experts if i am on the right track, because i dont want to fail at design stage.

I think Saish's idea is cool, although you may want to add a few more methods per interface.
On the subject of delegation, you will will need to do this if you don't want to implement each part of your inherited interfaces over and over again for each concrete derived class - particularly if any of the interfaces have significant implementations.
So for example you may want a class CommentableAuthorableItem which is an implementation of both Commentable and Authorable.
Rather than..

If I type a URL in an e-mail, why can't the recipient click on it and go straight to the website in question?

It works fine in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome but in Firefox they have to cut and paste the link into their browser...

I have encountered the same problem with newest Firefox 6. Used to be able to just right click and get a hyperlink for url to paste into e mails. Firefox used to work great, now with the constant upgrades, all the add ons and even basic features are becoming more problematic. wish they would just concentrate on supporting one version to the best of their abilities and quit requiring so many updates that don't work as well. Many friends are migrating to Chrome....I am trying to stay with firefox because it was so good for so many years, but now it seems like constant problems.
Hope they get it worked out soon or I might have to follow the flock in migration.
