Well, it finally happened to

For many months on this forum I was baffled by calls for class action lawsuits, people being on their 5th Micro, and people swearing off Creative and going to the Fruit Side, all because of the supposed "Headphone jack design flaw" which plagued every Micro.
My Micro, bought in December of last year, never gave me that trouble. Half the time I felt lucky, the other half of the time I felt that the claims of this problem were somewhat exaggerated, that perhaps some people just abuse their electronics. That is, until <i>last week</i>!
Yes, after 7 months of occasional use and treating my Micro like a baby, I too have now suffered the inevitable. It appears I was merely postponing destiny. Well, Creative received my unit yesterday. I hope they can turn it around before I leave for Hawaii in two weeks. If not, I'll have to buy a new mp3 player and sell the refurbished one on eBay.
For those of you who have gotten their players repaired, does the repair hold up? Or does the jack merely fail again? And for those of you buying new Micros, has the jack indeed been re-enforced? I've heard conflicting statements on this.

Out of interest, do you wrap the headphone wire around the player?
How did it break? Through perfectly normal usage, that's how! Why? Only Creative knows (and they ain't talking!).
Someone before gave a relati'vely detailed description that (I think) the way its soldered, the middle joint acts like a fulcrum and therefore eventually the end joint breaks free. If that's to be believed of course.

    any suggestions?

    not much I can say.
It won't turn on, I hold down all the buttons for at least 10 seconds. I plug it in the usb port (PC) and for 5 mins now it still doesn't work.
I think I need to goto the apple store.

Csound1 What Ive been trying to explain is that I have been running bootcamp, I open the app where the first screen is the introduction, i hit continue, the first time I select "download the latest windows support software fromm Apple" then I return and instead select "Install Windows 7." Then hit continue. The third screen is where I "Create a Partition for Windows" I set Windows to 80 gigs then hit INSTALL. As stated before Bootcamp cannot find the install drivers saying "The installer disc could not be found." My windows software is on a USB drive not a disc, I tried using a virtual disc reader to make it appear that the windows software was running on a disc, still no luck. What I would like to know is how to install windows on bootcamp.

  • Does Canon XF100 work well with Final Cut Pro

Does the Canon XF 100 work well with Final Cut Pro 7.03

I have read the information about this camera and I have looked at several discussion groups.  Apparently you cannot edit in native format with this camera. This has been confirmed to me by a Canon rep.  You have to bring in footage thru log and transfer which means it takes more time as it converts.  I have never had to do this before.  Because I have always imported thru log and capture.  So because I was wondering if anyone out there can tell me if they are using the camera and if it works well inspite of it.  Or anyone has a better camera recommendation but in the price range of the XF100.
    Thanks,

My Hard Drive has finally bit the dust. After months of intermitent crackling, and disk utility runs to get my PB to boot, it has finally given up and here I am on my PC!!
Few months ago I wrote about my Hard drive woes (I still believe it is my Hard drive, as I havent got a professional opinion) and I thought the problem was sorted (software prob) but it doesn't seem to be the case.
I've finally decided it needs replacing... But I need advice on what I need to get.
    MacUpgrades says this: http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=294
is compatible. Doesn't seem too expensive...but as it's the age of the internet I looked about to see if I could get it any cheaper!
    Is this: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZX J2aWV3&productuid=95583&LOC=UK
the same thing? but at a cheaper price?
Also any guys in London know where I can get it installed cheaply?
    (i have a PB G4 15inch)
    Cheers and Merry Christmas.

    15" Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Sorry to hear your hard drive quit.
You have a choice of 5400rpm or 7200rpm drives. The quicker 7200rpm drives give a quicker response to disk operations and carry a price premium over the 5400rpm drives. 7200rpm drives top out at 100GB (although higher capacity drives are on the way), while 5400rpm drives top out at a higher 160GB. If you do a search of the discussions, popular choices include Hitatchi and Seagate, and some use Western Digital. Toshiba doesn't seem to have a good reputation, however. You can see a selection of drives that would work at http://www.macsales.com under 2.5" hardrives (note SATA hard drives won't work in a G4 Powerbook), and they do ship internationally if you can't find something locally.
While Apple will only install what they sell, Apple Authorized Service Centers typically will install something that you bring to them. You can find the local one in the UK at http://www.apple.com/uk/buy/locator/ and choose 'find service'.

  • How well does Final Cut Studio run with 3gb of ram? Macbook Pro 2.33mhz

I have a 2.33mhz (Model a1211) Macbook Pro. I've maxed out the ram to 4gb but because of the motherboard restrictions (that I still don't quite understand) it can only use 3GB.
I've read on the FCS specs that the minimum is requirement is 1GB but Apple recommends 4GB.
I cut mainly short 3 to 5 minute pieces with AVCHD video decoded with up to 60-90 minutes of footage.
Will I have any serious issues with any of the Final Cut Studio Programs that I should be aware of?
I'm obviously not expecting Mac Pro results but If it doesn't run very well with 3GB, I might have to rethink my purchase. If it is just a "hiccup" now and then with waiting for video to start or such, I will deal.
    Thanks

Motion is gfx intensive. Meaning that the lower the gfx card, the lower the performance. You should expect little-to-no realtime performance from Motion on the system mentioned with even basic-to-remotely-intermediate animations. CPU RAM will make a difference in the amount of total frames that you can render in a RAM preview, but it will not affect realtime performance. With your proposed system: add a particle, a lower third text, a replicator with 5,000 points, a light with some shadows, and a reflection (and this is one of each mind you, not multiple instances) and expect around a * less than * 1-3 fps playback in draft quality with %50-%25 playback resolution. Then expect to wait up to a minute or more with the beachball of death for each parameter change. No joke either. Good luck fine-tuning your moderate-to-even-remotely-complex animation with your desired system.
If working in Motion is your desire, then focus on the graphics card. Unfortunately you can not upgrade your gfx card on the MBP, so you should consider selling your MBP and investing in a Mac Pro. You can upgrade the gfx card in the Mac Pro and obtain optimal performance from Motion. Otherwise you'll literally be stuck in the mud with your animations.

  • Well, I finally did it!...oh yeah, I do have a question!?

After years of pc _ell! I made the switch. 4 times!!!!. First, I sent my oldest daughter of to school with an iBook G4, then my son a Mac mini, then my youngest daughter a Macbook and today I ordered a loaded iMac for Mom and Dad. In the brief time it took me to set up and explore these Mac's I realized that they are far superior to any windows product I've had in the past! Will they be perfect? I doubt it. Will they be much better? I think so!!!! I will still have my Firewall on, I will still run the Norton AV for Mac (Sorry if I offend anyone here!) So, one question, besides ilife '06, is there a program that can help me sort and organize a zillion pictures? Thanks, Bill

I switched to Mac in early 2002. On those days just coming from windows and having an always-on broadband connection for the first time I felt I needed something to protect me so I used Virex (free with .Mac suite back then). This feeling of needing extra protection soon faded away and I stopped wasting time searching for non-existent viruses.
I have never had a problem and I have tempted fate plenty of times by downloading dodgy software or browsing even dodgier websites most PC users would not dare to open.
Over these years I kept reading in PC magazines that this was about to change, that viruses for OSX were just around the corner. Well so far their predictions have not been materialised.
The reality is that the best protection you can have is to just browse a couple of Mac news sites daily. If something was to come up chances are that you will read about it on these sites and learn how to protect yourself well before you come across the offender on the net.
If you still feel that you want to experience the above by yourself I would recommend you to use ClamXav which is free. Over the years there have been so many horror stories about Norton products on OSX that if I were you I would be much more concerned about Norton messing up my system than a hypothetical virus.

  • How well does Final Cut Pro X run on an off-the-shelf 21.5" iMac?

I'm looking at purchasing an iMac for video editing projects but my budget is very limited. How well does a plain-jane iMac 21.5" (SATA 5400 RPM Drive, Iris Pro Graphics, 8 GB RAM) run FCPX?
Currently at my office I'm running FCPX on a Mid-2010 model with the 3.06 Core i3, 4GB of RAM and a Radeon HD 4670 256 MB. It is more than adequate for my needs in both FCPX and Motion 5. Will the current base model compare favorably to the one I'm already using?

Yup, depends on simplicity and what you can "get away with".

  • Missing Files, It finally happened???? Think I know why...

I have seen a number of reports about pictures and music disappearing from their sd card and until now I never seen it happen but today I had a number of photos came up missing and I noticed when it happened that may be the reason for this.  This appears to happened after I mounted my device as a Mass Storage device and computer reported errors on the card and wanted to scan the drive and I allowed the scan and right after this happened the images came up missing.  I have tried to identify the location that the check disk normally place files when they are moved do to errors but I havent had no luck yet but its not a issue because I backup my card regularly.

    PacoX wrote:
Doea the phone or windows show that the space is still used up? If not then I think Windows deemed the files corrupt and deleted them. You can scan the card with Recurva and see it finds anything. Never actually thought of the idea of defragging a SD card, maybe you could try that also.
The space reflects that the files have been deleted and I realize that once the files are labeled as corrupt the windows will not recover these files but I decided to dig through my software collection and used Undelete Plus from http://undeleter.net/adpages/undeleter/specific-file/?file=pictures&gclid=CNqgs_C10aQCFR5Kgwod51Y-Ig and was able to restore almost all the files that I had deleted.

  • Well, we finally got one....

    Hi there!
We got an MBP in today to configure for a customer (Boot Camp and our application). This notebook is the devil. There are three 6's in the serial number (no, not all together, but you get my point). This is the first notebook where we all found the following to be very troublesome:
    1. Whine - sounds horrible.
    2. Heat - This bad boy cooks! I never had my MBP get this hot. He has a Seagate drive so we loaded up the widget and the temp is 156! Not good nor normal!
This is a week 11 machine. We did the following with very encouraging results:
    1. Upgraded to 10.4.6
    2. Upgrade the Firmware to 1.01 (he did not have the 1.0 yet)
The heat is gone! Simply put, it reacted like my MBP - no more heat issue. The whine is about a third as loud. It does not bother me but does others.
What this is doing is convincing me and my engineers that everything can be solved in software. It just has to be the right combination and may take a few "hits" before it solves problems universally. The whine is a good example.
Thought you all would like to know what we found...
    Bob
PS: We have configured 59 MBP's now. Only three have had the whine. In case anyone is keeping score.

    Syntrak,
These issues happen because of components that are allowed to have some "acceptability score" that is not 100%. So, you toss a bunch of components in a box, and each product that comes out, will have slight differences. Then you write software to make the "acceptability score" come to 100% or as near as you can get it. The re-write of code works for some, but not for all, so you go back, re-write again, and again until this code works universally.
The above is from our head of engineering. He is one smart dude and has component level design and repair experience. He designs "systems" and notes that this is SOP for the chip and OEM industry. The "Acceptability Score" is so tight, but with the tinest of differneces, you find problems. Remember, the entire Intel idea and platform is new for the Mac writers, and they have to get through this.
I'm a patient man. Techonolgy evolves. Back on January 10th, some folks made a decision to be an "Early Adopter" and others decided that was not for them, and are waiting. That is the difference between you and I, I'm afraid. I can handle corrections and so forth, and I guess you can't.
I own a Rolex, it needs adjustment from time to time. What doesn't?

  • Does Motion 5 work well with Final Cut Express?

I have Final Cut Express, and I want to use Motion 5 with FCE. Do I have to buy Final Cut Pro X to use Motion 5?

You can buy Motion 5 without FCP X - I have exactly that.
You will not be able to send to or move around items from within FCE to Motion 5 however that is no different to Motion 5 and FCP 7!
What you can do is create your animated movie in Motion 5 and output your final movie with/without transparency as needed so you can then import that into FCE and place on your timeline over the background video as required.
Tip - decide how long you want your final animated clip in FCE and then when you create your Motion file set the duration to be the same or slightly longer.
