Westell A90-750015-07 as a wireless router w/o use of the DSL portion?

EDIT:
WHOOPS! Perhaps a better place for this would have been home networking, my apologies, even though this is in an area that is not best suited for it, please don't delete it as for someone that is a "hunt n' peck" typist, it would be heck to enter it all over again... Thnx.
Hello,
Perhaps someone has already done this...
I'm curious about the possibilities of a Westell 7500 DSL modem / wireless-router operating ONLY as a wireless router.
That is to say if there was a need for an additional wireless router to use one as such.
After all, one of the network connectors is labeled E1-UPLINK.
One "possible" scenario would be an extension of service to an outbuilding or another floor. To elaborate, a wired connection could be made between the DSL / router and another Westell 7500 in a detached garage or on another floor of a residence that the wireless signal from the first DSL Modem could not reach. Of course they would be both operating on different channels.
Anyone ever tried this or had it work for them successfully?
Cordially,
Gerry

This can be done. Use a second 7500 and set it up with the settings you need for Wireless. Don't connect it to a DSL line and instead, disable DHCP (Private LAN) on the second Westell 7500. Also disable the Network Scanning to cut down on ARP traffic on the network. From that point, connect the two units LAN to LAN and you've got a switch and Access Point. Don't bother enabling the VersaPort feature of the 7500, and it's also best to disable the Firewall built-in since it's not needed (unloading it from Memory).
You might be able to bridge the Westell 7500 as if it were being set up as just a modem and that would effectively do the same thing (shut off the router-related features in a single go) and from that point all you'd need to do is disable DHCP on the router and connect the two units LAN-to-LAN. Not sure if bridging shuts the wireless off, however.

  • Cisco Model 870 router for home office connected to WRT160NL wireless router for personal use

I am using a Cisco Model 870 router for home office. I just bought a WRT160NL wireless router for home use. I setup the personal wireless router off the personal port of the 870 and can connect with my PC but not with my MAC machines. It can see the Network but when it asks me for passwords, it says they are wrong, which after several attempts I know they are correct.
The new router is setup as WPA2 personal. Can you advise?

I think I answered my own question. I tried downloading something on my desktop and checked my cellular usage afterwards didn't go up so it's using my home internet and not my data plan.

  • I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too..

I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:
    WDS network
If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

  • Can the Westell A90-750015-07 modem/router be used as an wireless repeater?

I am currently using a Netgear router and would like the Westell to act as a repeater to boost the signal.  Is this possible to do and how?

The Netgear WNR834B can work as a repeater. The Westell 7500 must be the primary router to do this though. Ideally, what you should do instead of repeating a Wireless signal is to use Ethernet to the second router, either through a direct cable run or a MoCa/Powerline Link and set up the Netgear as an Access Point only. You'll maintain Wireless speed and you won't have to deal with WDS.

  • Airport refuses to connect to wireless router... most of the time

I'm having a really odd problem with my MacBook Pro trying to connect to the internet via my wireless ZyXEL router. I've had the router for a while and use it to connect a Mac Pro and PC by LAN and a Wii and iPhone wirelessly and It's never given me a headache before.
Airport picks up the local WIFI networks, including mine, no problem. But when it tries to connect, after asking for the WEP Password, it just times out. I have tried creating the network connection manually within the "Network" area under "System Preferences" selecting various security methods (WEP Password, WEP 40/128-bit ASCII and None) but nothing works. And everytime I manually select the ZyXEL network it asks for the WEP password anyway. No matter how many times I put it in, it wont connect.
I also logged into the system preferences of the ZyXEL wireless router and input the MacBook Pro's MAC address and selected "allow access" but it still wont connect. Except just one time, when I simply turned Airport Off and On again it connected fine and didn't ask for the WEP Password?!? But then after I rebooted machine It won't connect again and turning Airport Off and On doesn't work anymore either.
Can anyone shed some light on the problem?
    Thanks very much

You may have noticed that your issue is fairly common and no one single solution works. So all I can offer is a few things that I know have worked for me, my friends and colleagues, and my customers.
    1) make sure your computer can connect wirelessly elsewhere. There's little worse than struggling with an issue at home only to discover it wasn't fixable.
    2) make sure your base station's firmware is up to date
    3) try turning off the security on your base temporarily and see if you can connect that way. If so, try a different security method.
    4) try changing broadcast channels. You may have a neighbor on the same channel which blocks reception - I know, why this computer and not others? Voodoo
    5) open your Network preference tab and select Airport. Delete any preferred networks you find and make sure that ask to join new networks is checked
    6) create a new account and see if it has any better luck connecting. Last spring I struggled with a computer for several days and one of my IT students suggested this pointing out that I suggest it for many other troubleshooting issues. Darn smart aleck student! Obviously at some point the admin's network prefs got munged and everything I tried after that was for naught.
    Good luck

  • Using Time Capsule as a 'wireless' router and backup using Time Machine

I have a question about backup speed on my 1 TB Time Capsule. I purchased a Time Capsule about a year ago and have an imacg5 and two Mac laptops that I setup to use the wireless router capability and as the backup drive for all three computers.
I was experiencing a problem in that the backups from the imacg5 were never completing even though the Time Machine window said it was only backing up several MBs. In order to 'fix' the problem I finally 'erased' all of the backup files on the Time Capsule using Airport Utility. I had also run Disk Utility on all of the drives to verify and fix any problems.
When I initialized the wireless connections and initiated backups I connected to the imacg5 to the Time Capsule with an ethernet connection as well as via Airport and began 'backing up' my laptops, then started by backing up individually, various disks on my imacg5.
The laptops have rather small disks and backed up rather quickly. The imacg5 has hundreds of GB of data spread across several disks. I had decided to 'backup' the disks individually in case that had been the cause of my original problem.
My systems disk, Macintosh HD, backed up about 110 GB at the rate of 8 GBs per hour. I was encouraged.
My next 'data' disk, LaCie 320 #1, backed up about 209 GB at the rate of 2 GBs per hour. I was confused. This 'backup' took several days to complete. Once it completed, Time Machine has run about every hour as expected and completes the backup in about 3 minutes.
I still have two more disks on the imacg5 to backup. Does anyone have any idea what rate I should expect or should I just add the drives and let it take its course?

    I say just do it!
When connected via ethernet I turn off the airport connection on the computer. I found that frequently my mom's macbook pro would choose the wireless connection to her Time Capsule rather than the ehternet connection to do the back up. This was slower than via the ethernet.

  • Wireless Router WRT54GS - One connection bumps the other computer off...

I've set up the Wireless Network using the direct console setup as specified by the instructions to set up via Cable Internet connection.
The wireless network seems to work fine, but the direct connection via Network cable the internet connection works for a little bit and then is bumped off. When I unplug the cable and then plug it back in, the PC connection works (for a time) but then I get a "conflict has occured with another computer on the network with the same ip" message. Eventually one of the computers is bumped off the connection. Is the redundant IP the problem, and if so, how can I fix this?
    Thanks, Zach

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!

  • Need to reset the Wireless Router everytime I use it?

Hello all, I read through the messages already on the board but didn't see this problem, so apologies if this has been asked already etc.
Basically, I have a LinkSys Wireless-G Router with Speedboost, and I'm having some right problems getting it going.
Essentially, I get it working, go on the internet, works fine super fast and I have no problems. Then I'll turn off the computer, unplug the router etc (I turn off everything at the mains to save energy). When I want to go back online I plug everything in, turn on the computer and this is where I start having problems.
The computer will think its connected to the router and the internet but when I open up a website it can't access it and I just get the standard error message.
One of my computers uses a Linksys Wireless Adaper with Speedboost and the utility with that says that it has accessed the Access Point but cannot connect to the internet.
Basically I end up fiddling about all the time - I wondered if its because I'd set up WAP security, but everything was on the same setting anyway and when I disabled security it was still the same.
I set up my laptop to use the router wired instead of wirelessly but had the same problem.
I pressed the orange button on the left front side of the router, and it flashed white for abit before going orange again, and suddenly it started working.
I'm not sure what that button is! Does it reset the router or something? I know when I've pressed it before (following a troubleshooting guide from somewhere) and it stayed white, but still had problems with it. Anyway, I'm using it now to write this message so as you can see once I'm connected I don't have a problem!
Essentially - is this a router hardware problem and does it need replacing? I upgraded the firmware but its still the same. The firmware is 1.50.8 or whatever!
Thanks for reading, hope you can help!
    Alex

It's a bot of a silly argument really. If you unplug the thing it is likely to loose settings. It is coming up with defaults that will allow you to connect but not reliably.
If you are worried about security, enable one of the many forms of security like WEP and so on. That will keep unfriendly folks from "borrowing" your network. If you read the wattage ratings on the gateway/router, they are tiny. I have never heard of any such device catching anything on fire. There just isn't enough current/voltage to do so. If it overheats, it is obviously defective and you should return it as there is something wrong with it, etc.
Honestly, it can't cost more than a few pennies per day to run. You can, as an extra measure of external security, turn off your DSL or Cable modem when not using it. This will let you share files internally without having open internet access until you want it.
    Just suggestions.

  • Wireless Router RG54SE II disconnecting from the Internet in about 2-3 hours

I have a problem with my router in which i can't connect on the internet with it anymore.
My connection type is PPPoE and it worked fine for about 2 years, now i'm getting disconnects and after that i have to unplug it and wait about an hour to reconnect.
If i put the internet cable into my computer it works fine.(I guess it is not an ISP problem and i tried with another router and works correctly)
I have tried to reset my router, but it won't reset (pressing the button for about 20 sec and still remembers the modifications made and not factory default)
I have tried to upgrade my firmware but it says that the file length isn't correct. (file downloaded from http://faenl.msi.com/index.php?dir=Networking/RG54SE%20II%20%28Wireless%20Kit%29/firmware/ ).
Can i get some help? What shall i do? Do i need to buy a new router, because this is broken?

    Well Thanks for the replies..
I came home late last night and shut down both computers.. and re-flashed the firmware again to the router.. disconnected the router after re-setting it back to Factory and left it and the computers and DSL modem unplugged all night . I started this morning with a clear head and a little more paitence.
I open the lynksys advisor program it came with and followed the initial instructions and set it up exactly as if it was a brand new install. I re-set the router for all my configurations such as my Security Camera DVR so I can monitor my cameras remotely.. and for Torrents for both my desktops..I also flashed the firmware again just for good measures figuring it cant hurt. So far I have been without a disconnect from the internet for over 6 hours.. let me keep my fingers crossed and it stays this way (Connected 24/7) .. I used channel 11 for the router this time as last time I believe I was using channel 6.. ?
So far so good.. dont ask me what I did to correct it .. just started from scratch and let the router and modem stay powered off all night .. maybe that did the trick ? I dunno and dont care as long as I now have steady interent again.. hope I didnt jinx myself and post this too soon.. will keep you posted if it happens again. I hope not.

  • Safari and Wireless Router freezing while using Facebook or Google Maps

    Hi
When I use some apps within Facebook or I'm using Google Maps the page freezes and I have to reset the router to get things going again.
Netcomm said to change the MTU setting in the router but problem still exists even after I changed the MTU to one of the suggested settings.
    Any advice appreciated..
    thanks
    Colin

    HI Colin,
Try Repairing Permissions using Disk Utility. Disk Utility is in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Only takes a few minutes to run. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu and reboot.
See if Facebook or Google Maps freezes.
This could be a Safari preference file issue also. Locate this file: com.apple.safari.plist
It's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Try Facebook or Google Maps... see if it still freezes.

  • AirPort Express connected to a Windows LAN already with a wireless router

My apologies if this is out there, I can't seem to find this answer....
I have a curent LAN with several Windows based PCs. There is a wireless router that is used by the Windows laptops.
My iPad works ok (not great) on this network but I am looking at putting in an AirPort in the main room in my house where the iPad is used. My hope is that this will improve performance.
    two questions:
    1) will this make a difference in wireless connectivity (speed/performance )?
    2) can this model work- Airport in a current wireless environment.

Wireless bandwidth and speed fall off as the distance increases between the source producing the wireless network and the device receiving it. Any obstructions in the signal path will slow the wireless much more than distance alone.
You haven't told us anything about the construction type of your home or the number of obstructions like walls or ceilings in the signal path. If you have a line-of-sight relationship between the main router and your iPads, then you will likely see little difference in performance compared to having a device producing a wireless network in the same room as the iPads.
If you consider that a "typical" wall of sheetrock and 2x4 construction in a home will on average, absorb about 15-20% of the signal...and you have 3-4 walls in the signal path, or a ceiling (which is thicker than a wall) and few walls, I think you already have your answer about whether it would be wise to locate the AirPort Express in the same room or close to the area where the iPads will normally be used.

  • What kind of wireless router would be best for my Westell B90?

I used to have linksys WRT54G router set up with my westell B90-21004 modem. It used to work fairly well until I've noticed that I've been getting intermittent internet connection. I've called verizon twice. First time, they asked me to switch the ends of the line connected to my modem. The problem continued. The second time, it was because the line between the modem and the phone jack was over 14 ft. I'm still getting intermittent problem. So I've been looking around for a solution and I figure it might be the router. As of right now, the modem is connected directly to the PC and it seems to be fine. When I tried to plug it back to the router, I can't even get online. What kind of router should I get? This was my second router. I used to have a netgear that didn't work at all. Is it even the router's fault? Maybe I did a bad setup or something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
