What is a 'SWF' file

Hi all :)
Ok! RSS is an abbreviation for
Really Simple Syndication...... or
Rich Site Summary? And
JavaScript is not a sub-language of
Java.
So could someone please tell me what the
SWF abbreviation stands for, StandAlone Wrapper File or
Shock wave File.

If you are placing it in a web page, then you normally have to use special embedding code to have it display. I don't know if Illustrator provides the necessary code, but if you have Flash, it can generate the code that code in the web page. Dreamweaver can also do it, though I find it less reliable in doing so. Otherwise, if you link directly to the swf file it should open in a browser window and fill up the window.

• Links don't work on Menu Bar: swf file location error too.

Hi folks, I'm using CS5 and Menu Bar 2.0 and am getting this error when attempting to save files using a particular template: http://imm.io/3chF
When I upload my site, some of the links are faulty, presumably to do with this error. I've tried using Menu Bar 1 and get the same error message.
The files it asks for are already in my root directory as well as in the Scripts directory. Where should they be?
FYI my test site is at http://www.arrowmark.co.nz/web4/portfolio.html. Links work from this page, but they do not work within other pages based on that template. Eg you can get from there to tatler.html but that's where the linkage fails.
Thanks in advance for advice on this problem.
Jo

Hi,
looking to your source code from "portfolio.html" you can't have a working link, 'cause there always these "#"-placeholders are "waiting" for their job:

Prime, Tatler, 12Bar

Marketing

Sales

Event Management

for example:

Image Editing aso.
What concerns your swf-file: In my IE8 it's working, so it seems it's on the right place, or did I misunderstood your question?

• My imported swf files have lost their streaming sound. What can I do?

I am trying to import a swf I made that contains streaming sound. When I place it on the time line and press cntr enter my animation plays but with no audio. I see the symbols from the swf and the swf inside my library. When I open the swf file inside my project it is broken down frame by frame with no audio. I can add audio back into my movie clip so I know that movie clips can support streaming audio. But I would rather not have to do this.
I'm very new to flash so I am hoping there is something big that I am missing.
In addition to my previous question: I need to embed a lot of objects over and over in this project I am working on. Each object will have controls for play back of itself. Is there some reason I cannot do this?
Thank you for any advice you may have.

Thank you for your reply
Ok. I will need to maintain a libary of movie clips that contain streaming audio and simple scripts. Does anyone know of a good tutorial for importing a file at runtime? I've seen something called shared libary properties and it has a field for a url. I put a swf file on my web site and took it's url and put it into this field but nothing shows in my library. What else do I need to do?

• .swf file quality to dvd what is the magic path

This has always been a struggle trying to get .swf quality to the DVD and on web. I thought that when Adobe bought flash this will soon be a peace of cake. That has not been the case and I’m still trying to find the magic path. I have recently up graded from premiere 6 to premiere pro CSF to get upgrade of Encore 2.0 and what I thought was the silver bullet .swf import possible to premiere I thought this will cut down on the number of compressions and give the .swf quality on the DVD and much better web based quality as FLV files. The current movie which is by the way a deadline pay the bills type project publish fine as a .swf and has great screen qualities. It is my understanding that the new mpeg codecs that come with this upgrade are the choice for best DVD quality and web production when I import the .swf the movie export works fine for a while then windowsexporter.exe stops working and the process quits. So I guess maybe vista windows thing on my laptop so I up grade on my XP desktop and the program will not run at all and keeps crashing. So I find out file is probably to big to process so I split it down into smaller portion in flash and try to import the new smaller files and get error message file screen size to big when it is set to 720x480. I try sending directly to encore as suggested and get encode stopped unknown error. I can get an windows projector .exe file to process thank goodness that is keeping client happy for now but need to go on line and to dvd soon with much better quality than I get when I can get the movie to process in AVI which is really bad quality and not acceptable to deliver. Thanks in advance for any help deadline May 12 DVD in clients hands so this is chrunch time I need a fix or work around.

I don't think I understand what you mean by "SWF file quality" in relation to Encore.
Are you authoring to DVD? All video in the DVD-Video format is compressed to MPEG-2. If you're using SWF (FLV, really) for you source video, then you are starting with a highly-compressed format to begin with and it will be re-compressed to MPEG-2 when the DVD is built.
If you're not trying to use FLV for your source video, can you please explain the problem?

• What happens when the Main Flash is 25 fps and an external SWF file is 12 fps?

Hello everyone,
I have a Main Flash which is set to 25 fps. This Flash is
used to load an external swf file which was created using 12 fps. I
would like to know what really happens when the Main Flash loads
the external swf file? Does the Main file forces the external file
to be run on 25 fps or the swf file is run with its own 12 fps?
Any ways, if someone can take the time and explain this, I
would be greatful.
Thank you very much and have a great day.
Khoramdin

the external swf plays at 25fps - all loaded movies will take
on the frame rate of the parent movie.

• What file do I need to associate with a .swf file?

I used to execute .swf on my computer in the past. Now it does not work. I tried to troubleshoot what file that was associated with and found Adobe Acrobat (that I have not changed since the last time I used it). So I associated it with Flash Pro 6 and that did not work. I associated it with the Adobe Media Player and that was not what I wanted. I have installed the Flash Player (at least four times) from www.adobe.com. I read the different forum questions and found to locate the C:/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash, so I did that and found all it located was the installation .exe file. Of course that did not work. The .swf file and its associated files are located in C:/Flash/bubbles folder and was published with the ./bubbles setting.
I have:
MS Windows7
Flash Pro CS6
So how do I execute a .swf created from Flash Pro CS6 without having to open Flash Pro CS6, like a user would experience?

There is no such name as flashplayer_11_sa.exe when I searched on the computer. The file that downloads does go to the "Download" folder, but it is the installer for the Flash player. So after I double click on this file to let it update my computer with the newest and greatest version, I associate that file with the .SWF extension and it does not execute when I double click on the .SWF file.
So I give up. Guess that is why you have Flash Pro to run others/my .SWF files.

• What .swf file interactivity works in a Fixed Layout ePub?

I've test a .swf file in an fixed layout ePub file and it seems that the animations work but none of the navigation buttons. Can someone confirm what .swf features work and don't work in fixed layout ePubs.

"eventListeners" is not an InDesign feature for buttons.
I think you're out of luck.

• Making .swf files in Flash Pro CC: What versions of Flash Player could play it?

Hello, all!
I was recently let go from my last job. My former boss wanted me to do ActionScript work on a PowerPC Mac (an iMac G5) with a decade-old version of Flash (Flash MX 2004.) Her reasoning for this was sound: she wanted to distribute some of here English tutoring software to cash-strapped schools, so she wanted me to work with older software and hardware to ensure compatibility. Unfortunately (in this case) the only version of Flash Pro that I can legally acquire is Flash Pro CC, so I was unable to actually get my hands on anything that could run ActionScript 2. This made my productivity at work go slower than desired. Not only was I slow in picking up how to use Flash MX on a Mac (I'm primarily a Windows/Linux person) but she made it quite clear that she wasn't going to have me learning how to do the job on company time. In the end, she decided to scrap the project.
Now, that job is gone, and what's done is done, but I'm still interested in using Flash/ActionScript, and I'm also left with a question that, depending on the answer, may have saved my job if I had asked it just a couple days ago: what's the oldest version of Flash Player that would be able to play .swf files made in the current version of Flash Pro CC?
Thank you all for your time.

with a cc subscription, you can download, install and activate flash pro cs6 which supports as2.
the answer to your last question depends on what features you use of flash pro cc. at a minimum you would be using as3 and need to use a flash player version that supports as3.

• What is the best way to Place/Embed/Link swf files to play in my Muse website?

I have some older swf files that I created and would love to have them play on my webpage in my Muse website. As soon as I use the place command to put them on a page, Muse crashes when I try and preview that page or publish the site. I'm new to Muse so maybe I should be using an alternate method of bringing those swf files in.
Also, I would like to use some of the Reallusion programs to create a "talking head" that introduces my website when visitors enter. But Crazy Talk 7 only seems to want to create avi files. What is the best way to get avi's to play in Muse? I have posted this question in the Flash forum also.
Is there a program in the Creative Suite package that would be better to use to create this talking head or a workflow that will make these videos usable on the pages of Muse?

• What is the code to load a .swf file in AS3 on the same layer?

I'm new to AS3 and am trying to figure out the code for loading a .swf file on the same layer of the same page, thereby replacing all of the information. I don't want to put it on layer 2, etc. Another easy thing I can do in AS2 but am struggling with in AS3.
thanks!
Steve

There are no 'layers' in AS3 - there is just the display list. You can use addChildAt to add things at a specific depth - thereby placing it behind or above something, but if you just use addChild it goes on top of whatever is currently there...
Anyway - to answer your question, you can load a .swf with a Loader object like so:
var l:Loader = new Loader();
l.load(new URLRequest("myFile.swf"));
addChild(l);
You can wait for complete like was shown, but you don't have to. And this will not 'replace' anything - it just loads myFile.swf on top of anything currently being shown. If you want to 'replace' what's there you need to remove it first:
while(numChildren){
removeChildAt(0);

• What am i doing wrong, SWF File

Hello all,
This is driving me crazy!
I have made a flex app, that imports a swf file, converts it to a movie clip, and then pulls which frame to display from a XML file, that is checked every second. This works fine when using the following SWF file - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash.swf
Although when i tried re-creating my own example - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash2.swf
my flex app fails to respond correctly. THe swf file just loops thru all the frames in one go, and fails to take into account the XML file pointing at what frame to look at, and fails to look at the HTTPS service.
Ok so here is an example of the app with both examples embeded.
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfwork/Main.html - This is using the working swf file,
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfbroke/Main.html - This is using the swf file that i have created.
THe code that i am using to achieve this is as follows -

<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" applicationComplete="load()">
<mx:Script>

import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
[Bindable] public var dataDump:String = "datadump";
[Bindable] private var myText:String
private var flashMovie:MovieClip;
private function initMovie():void{
flashMovie = loader.content as MovieClip;
private function load():void{
flashMovie.gotoAndStop(myText)
getImage.send();
setTimeout(load,1000);
private function handleImage(event:ResultEvent):void
myText = event.result.framelocation;

</mx:Script>
<mx:SWFLoader id="loader" source="flash2.swf" complete="initMovie()" x="-9" y="-3"/>
<mx:Button label="Next" click="flashMovie.nextFrame()" x="78" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="Previous" click="flashMovie.prevFrame()" x="0" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="4" click="flashMovie.gotoAndPlay(7)" x="156" y="405"/>
<mx:HTTPService id="getImage" result="handleImage(event)" url="http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/change.xml" method="POST">
<mx:request xmlns="">

</dataDumping>
</mx:request>
</mx:HTTPService>
<mx:Text x="817" y="10" text="Total: {myText}" width="157"/>
</mx:Application>
My question is when creating my own swf file, what am i doing wrong? Flex clearly isnt interacting with it in the same way as the original swf, by the way, this swf was taken from a tutorial.
If anyone could point me in a direction or offer help on this i would be thankful. Im sure i am just missing something out when i create my swf in flash

1. your swf file must be published for as3.
2. it should consist of a main timeline with more than 1 frame.
3. it needs as many frames as you're going to reference in the xml.
4. that main timeline should contain objects on its frames so you can see when the main timeline is on one frame vs another referenced in your xml.
that's it. those are the only requirements of the swf.
have you confirmed that intiMovie() is called first and then load()? if so, how did you confirm?

• What is the use of embedding Xcelsius Swf file in to Crysatl report?

Hi all,
I read some documents related to this integration, but still am in a confusion about the final purpose.
Can any of you answer my question patiently?
1.Is the embedded SWF acts just like a static object (just like a SWF)?
2.If, I embed a swf file in CR 2008, Will both have any interactivity between those two?
I mean, if I change the source data for CR , will the data SWF be changed? (If I have same columns like Country, Sales)
3.How the interactivity will work..? From SWF to Crystal data OR Crystal data to SWF (as I asked above).
4.I read BO doc with an example, but its not clear up to my doubts.
It would be thank full if any of you spend your time for a clear description.

• Cannot open .swf files what so ever

Hi, I downloaded a few swf files and can't open it after trying everything.
I've installed multiple versions of Flash on my computer and tried opening it in all latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and IE. I've downloaded multiple standalone versions of flash but as soon as I browse for the swf file, then press open it just closes the program. I've tried turning my firewall off just incase it could of been that and once again all the issues just repeated.
In Firefox and Chrome I get a white screen and when I right click it says "Movie not loaded". In IE, I get a black screen and when I right click it says "Movie not loaded".

Local SWF files will play with the standalone Flash Player (Projector). You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
Note that the download is the player, not an installer, so you will have to make the file association manually.
