What can Solution Manager 7.0 provide for PI 7.1?

I work with PI 7.1 EHP 1 and have been asked to determine if time/resource should be invested to setup Solution Manager 7.0 EHP 1 to provide monitoring/management of PI. I attended SAP TechEd 2011, and there was a lot of discussion that SM 7.1 would be a significant part of monitoring for PI 7.3. However, since I'm not on those platforms, can you help me understand what SM 7.0 can provide me as a PI Administrator/Support over what I use now (Runtime Workbench & SXMB_MONI)?
The Solution Manager resource on the BASIS team mentioned that SM takes a lot of configuration and I'd have to learn about Business Process Management to make it do anything useful. What I saw at TechEd showed a nice start page that showed data volume, errors, and nice graph. Perhaps that is only for SM 7.1, but it seemed like a nice data view capability.

Solution Manager requires additional steps in order to be able to configure this monitoring scenario. Once your solution manager is installed and running you have to perform initial configuration -> basic configuration -> managed system configuration
In the last step you'll actually configure diagnostics and willy for your PI system.
If the number of managed systems that you have to connect is small this "3 step" configuration can be done in a couple of weeks.

Solution Manager 7 EHP1 - Implimentation Help

Dear All,
I am new to Solution Manager.
I have install Solution Manager 7 EHP1 (ABAP+JAVA) on windows 2003 and applied later SP stack 24 available at Market place.
We have SAP ECC 6, ABAP stack (we have not install JAVA stack for DEV/QAS or PRD Servers).
On ECC 6 out landscap is DEV->QAS->PRD.
Now after installing Solution Manager 7 EHP1, I have done automatic configuration using SOLMAN_SETUP i.e. upto BASIC CONFIGURATION successfully.
Initially I want to use solution manager for
1. Support Patch Approval
2. SAP Note download
3.Service Desk
Now where and what I need to configure my DEV/QAS/PRD system to use above solution

what is Solution Manager? A platform that provides integrated content, tools and methodologies for implementing, supporting, monitoring, upgrading and operating your enterprise SAP solutions.
My recommendation would be, if you have a chance to attend any of the SAP Solution Manager Seminars www.sapsolutionmanagerseminar.com/ would be the best to do. I am just back from the Amsterdam session. I have mainly worked in SAP Solution Manager projects, but still learned a few things even in areas I have been involved in.
Can you use SAP Solution Manager out of the box without any customizing? No. You need to execute basic customizing and maintain your landsape at the minimum.
For example you have to maintain your landscape. Generate RFC connections, setup up monitoring if required. Configure EWA reports if needed. Service Desk and Change Request Management would be large configurations. There are some reports you can use.
How can it be customized? Check out in transaction SPRO to get some idea, but not everything is in there covered you still need to configure.
There is a SAP Solution Manager book published since this year.

Solution Manager Tab Maintenance

Hi SDN'ers,
Could anyone tell me whether it is possible to add additional tabs to the Solution Manager Configuration view, apart from the standard tabs, Documentation, Testing, etc.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
I am able to show/hide these default tabs, but I need to add some extra tabs.

It mentions that one would need to go to :
SPRO -> SAP Reference IMG -> SAP Solution Manager Implementation Guide -> SAP Solution Manager -> Advanced Configuration -> Basic Settings -> SAP Solutin Manager System
Under this are several items:
-> General Settings
-> HTTP Services
-> Connection to SAP
etc.
Where is the documentation to work with these items? My thoughts are that these need to be done before starting to configure the Maintenance Optimizer.
After the installation, ran the post-installation steps and all seemed to go well. The list of these items were not there (as part of the post-installation steps).

With the new products, it is mandatory to have solution manager, as is future, SAP plans to give support to customers via solution manager. as in if SAP needs to monitor your system for service checks, they would be gathering the system information using solution manager and other SAP tools like solution manager diagnostics.

I have asked to my Implementation Partner to implement Solution Manager with following details.
Maintenance Optimizer Configuration, Usage, Hands on and Training. Patching using Solution Manager.
a. Configuration Maintenance Optimizer
b. Installation of Software Lifecycle Manager u2013 SLM
c. Software Logistics Controller u2013 SLC
d. SLD Registration
e. Configuration for Transport Directory
f. Support Package Manager u2013 SPAM (Specially on SM)
g. Java Support Package Manager u2013 JSPM (Specially on SM)
h. Usage of MO and Demo
i. EWA Scheduling Using SM.
j. EWA Recommendations Implementation
Please let me know If I am forgeting any thing or needs to be configured for smooth running of our setup. What are thing to be configured??

There are many features with Solution Manager EHP1 SP 04. See if you ask them to upgrade to latest level.
Also following more features are available. Depending on your company and your requirement you could configure it.

- System Availability monitoring (CCMSPING)

- DBA Cockpit
- CPH (Central Performance History)
- Job Management
- Project Administration

What type of Business Processes can be imported in Solution Manager 7.1?

Hello Together,
currently i deal with the topic: BusinessProcessMonitoring.
My question: what types of businessprocess can be imported in Solution manager 7.1?
- exported processes out of the NetWeaverDeveloperStudio?
- processes out of the CE?
Some else....???
I would be happy about some answers.

Hi Henry,
Today in Solman 7.1 onwards creation of business processes is really very and you can use the content upload interface which means you can upload the processes via excel file as well.
so you can download it from other system into a flat file and upload the same in solman to quickly do the same.

in terms of importing from another solman ...if you have a transport route ...definately you can create a TR and import the project with processes into your new solman system
or if it is Solution in another system then also you can use solution transfer function/feature to import it.
Also, if you are talking about Netweaver BPM tool this requires integration setup with solman (BPB) etc to do that like ARIS integration etc.

Hi,
Solution Manger is a central platform for all solutions.
Its a Support hub and gateway between SAP serivce market and the customer.
It helps in providibg tools, content, procedures,services to implement and operate the SAP solutions.
It helps in improving the IT services for a business and reduce the Downtimes to reduce the production loss.
It also helps in facing and solving technical risks.
Initially to upgrade the SAP related softwares Solution manager was not in need, but in the Netweaver level to upgrade Solution manager is a must decided but SAP at Germany.
So in a landscape Solution manager is also installed in a separate system and oneside connected to servicemarket and otherside to the landscape at your place.
Its mostly related to Basis Part of SAP.
I think this would give you an idea of what is SolMan.
