What on earth just happened?

I'll definitely call the after-sales support about this - first thing Monday morning - but I thought someone here might know something as well.
I was using GarageBand. When I tried to start a new project, the OS shut down the program and the noise-making rotating device inside the computer (the fan, I suppose) just started to spin faster and faster.
I couldn't shut down the computer normally since the pointer would appear as the rainbow ball. I put the computer to sleep by closing the display, but the noise just got higher and higher.
At this point the noise was so high-pitched and alarming that I thought the computer was going to explode or something. I opened the display and shut down the computer by pressing the I/O button for a few seconds.
Nice. I haven't had the guts (even though I'm Finnish) to start the computer yet. I thought I should let it get a little cooler.
What happened? Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

A hung program (or even more rarely, a hung system) can cause processor use to max out. When this happens, the temperature naturally goes higher, causing the fans to kick in. If the program/system doesn't finish its task, thus allowing the processor to come down from 100% and cool off, then the fans will max out themselves.
If this happens again, try hitting command-option-escape, to bring up the force-quit window. If a program shows up in red, it's hung and possibly using maxing out the processor. Force-quit the program and see if the fans come down shortly after.
If the force-quit window doesn't appear, then the system itself is hung, and you're indeed best off to hold down the power button to switch the computer off.
Though i don't have a Macbook myself to verify this bit, my assumption is that attempting to put it to sleep will not succeed if the system is hung.

Urmm, what the **** has just happened?

Dear all,
I have just had perhaps one of the worst moments of my life. A potential client was in to see how we work and things, and so I said I could show him our workflow, and opened up a song that I had done a couple of months ago as it has a particularly complex arrangement etc and is a good show-off piece for people who might be interested in paying you!
Now here's the shocker.
Everything is out of time. Bits have moved. Rewire is no longer in sync. Audiofiles have miraculously chopped themselves up. MIDI events have moved. What on earth can I do? My backup is not a very recent version. Has this happened to anyone else? I had never opened the song in 7.1.1 before...
Please, if anyone has any ideas, please, please, please...

This describes something I've just recently experienced. Last week I bought a new hard drive (for system & apps) and installed everything fresh, although it was time consuming. (My previous system drive was working perfectly.) Now I notice on a couple songs, the tracks started playing in a jumbled timing manner. All the audio files were playing in the wrong places. The song was a mess. When I closed the program, and relaunched the song, it played correctly, which leads me to believe it's some kind of accessing issue. Don't know what it is though...

Problem started 3 weeks ago....
Frequent dis-connections - i am talking at least 6 times an hour. This is happening on both my wired PC and on wireless devices
Speed has slowly been getting slower and slower. I used to get 6-8mbps but now it is less than 1mbps. Last night for example it was running at 0.11mbps and this morning has crept up to 0.95mbps.
I have spoken to the call centres on 3 separate occasions - first time i was told to just see how it goes, second time i was told to unscrew the socket and plug the ASDL filter into the 'test' socket - this has not improved things. Third time i was advised to use a new ADSL filter which i have done - again no improvement
I am convinced that something is happening in my area as several people in the village where i live are also experiencing the same problem but BT will not acknowledge this nor does their service status show any work is happening in my area (01508 code)
I have made an official complaint to BT but am at my wits end about it all....
If anyone can suggest what may be wrong i woud be very grateful

What on Earth has happened to my iPhone 4, and how do I fix it?

While walking home this evening, I was listening to music on my iPhone 4 (not the 4S).
Suddenly, the music stopped. I took the phone out of my pocket and it was dead. "Must be the battery", I thought, "But that's odd, because it still had a bit of charge left." I took it home and plugged it in to charge.
Since then it has not done anything. It did not come on (with the battery symbol) as usual when plugged into the charger.
I have tried a variety of standard things, including holding the home and sleep/wake button for all kinds of different time periods, plugging it into my macbook pro and holding the home button, rebooting the macbook pro with the phone plugged in, even just leaving it plugged into the macbook and hoping that it will eventually come on, but nothing.
The macbook pro will not recognise the phone, so I am unable to do anything to it through that, and the blasted thing won't turn on.
What can I do?
I got the phone on a contract from 02, but it's a "re-conditioned" phone, which means it did not come direct from apple, but was returned to 02 within 14 days by a customer, checked, re-packaged and sent out again.
For the first few months it gave me no problems, but recently it has frozen a couple of times.
If I take it to an apple store/apple affiliate store (our town has a "Stormfront", but not an actual apple store), will they help me?
This is such a frustrating thing. My phone has so many different pieces of important information on it. Most of it will be in my iTunes backup, but a lot of more recent things are not!

[nForce] Wow! What the hell just happened

Ok heres the senario, i get this mornings mail in on my computer as usual and shut down as normal with no problems. I take the kids to playgroup. I pop back 30 mins later to find the main trip fuse in the fuse box of the house tripped off. Switch it back on and wizz round the house to f ind out what isnt working any more. I walk in to the living room and try to fire up the pc. Nothing happens but..... all i can here in the peace and quiet of the house is a tiny tiny high pitched fast beep coming from the front - definately the front of the pc towards the bottom - in line with its battery. Anyway I check the UPS as due to the mains going off its alarm was sounding when i walked into the house. So I checked that it had come back on when I reset the mains fuse box. It was on and showing full charge. So I check the power cable from the UPS to the computer, that's ok and fired up the monitor as a quick check. Anyway I had to whizz back to play group as I was on parent duty.
3 hours later I came back and could still hear the tiny beeping coming frm the front of the box. 30 mins later it had stopped. That suggest to me that it meant the computer battery is now dead. So until I have replaced that there is no way the computer has even a chance of starting. However even when replaced i dont think that may solve the problem as I cant believe a dying battery would cause the mains fuse of the house to trip.
So you fantastic experts who have helped me out many a time, any ideas on what the problem is? Its puzzling me until my better half can do a test on the PSU to see if its blown as to why, when it was turned off should it trip the mains in the house with no damage to the UPS or the surge protecter that I have looking after its other periperals etc?

Yes - we do that very regulary as we do have a major dust problem. I have to hoover it out probably every couple of months. For some daft reason we never even considered taking apart the psu to check that inside. So it had about 18 months worth of dust inside it. The next one will be taken apart - my better half being an electrician can do that sort of thing but if he wouldnt recommend doing it otherwise.
Anyway thanks for the recommendations Fredrik - i think we are going for a 500 or even a 600 this time.

What on earth has happened to the support line

I'll start off by saying that I like infinity, however I've called them after 24 hours of it being down (it has failed twice in 4 months, unfortunate side effect of fibre provided by BT) but where I got awesome technical people before, I spent 30 minutes talking to various departments tonight as they had no idea what they were doing... Have BT outsourced support recently?

I don't think so. But I would make sure on which department I am in befiore I spent time talking about my issue. Make sure that you are on tech support department.

What just happened? HD password suddenly doesn't work...

Alright this is a tricky one. W520 w/ Intel SSD.
I've got a Supervisor (SPV) password set for my BIOS as well as a HD password set.
I don't think I had a Power-on password set but I'm not sure.
No problems, my password has always worked.
I'm working and I have my laptop plugged into my LAN via Ethernet and I shut down. I always use wireless but was working with my router settings so had it plugged in via Ethernet this time.
When I start up, it started trying to boot from LAN, I see the Intel Boot manager start up (screen saying Press Ctrl + S to change options), and of course there is nothing on my LAN to PXE boot from so it proceeds after failing.
Then it asks for my Supervisor password, I enter it, works, asks for my HD password, I enter it, doesn't work. I try again, doesn't work. Try a third time, locks me out. I restart the machine.
The next time it asks for my HD password first rather than my Supervisor password, which doesn't work again. I reboot again.
Third time through this charade and for some reason the HD password works now but only to get me into the BIOS -- meaning I've pressed F1 and it asks for my password and lets me into the BIOS settings.
From here I try to remove the User password on the hard drive but it does not accept the password -- the same password I just entered and it accepted.
Now I'm not fat fingering or anything, the password is simple and I'm making sure I'm typing it in exactly correct.
So somehow powering off and powering on with my Ethernet cable connected has majorly screwed up my passwords in the BIOS. I think it was set to re-order boot devices if Wake-on-LAN was enabled or something, but something in that process must have screwed up my BIOS config. I don't know what to do. I don't understand what the heck is happening here. Password works then all of a sudden doesn't?

But the real question is why for the past year did the passwords work and then all of the sudden after this anomaly the disk password doesn't work? I'm not 100% sure of what my configuration was, but I know that most of the time it required one password -- supervisor, and occasionally it asked for 2 -- disk password as well I believe. This may have been related to the Password on Restart setting I think -- asking for the disk password on cold vs. warm boot. But I know both were exactly the same. But after this incident only the Supervisor password worked.

It just reboots the device and bolds the system fonts. No harm done. If you don't like it, undo the setting, it will reboot and back to as it was.

Not sure what just happened...everything just slowed/choppy in the middle of my session

I was working on a project and all of a sudden everything with in PS got noteably slow and choppy. This first happened while using the selection tool (polygonal lasso), which was lagging behind and making late clicks. I finished my selection and noticed the cursor in general was slow choppy still. I saved my work, shutdown PS, then reboot my computer. I reopen my project, the cursor lag seemed to be gone but the brush tool was not working correctly. Instead of making smooth burst of color with one click (gradient like), it now looks like 256 4 bit (old nintendo style) bursts. Or you could say it looks like multiple rings getting smaller and darker, like counting the rings of a tree trunk.
This happens instantly after opening a file of any type and size. I work with CMYK and 300dpi and while working on a page, this just happened out of nowhere.
I have an ASUS G74SX, i7 CPU, GeForce 560M w/2 gig RAM, 8 gig of SDRAM, 3 each SSD 300gigs (this is basically a 6 month old gaming laptop and has been working fine with PS until now). I have my PS scratch disk set to my F drive for all art and there is nothing more than 2 gigs of space being used right now. My RAM used in PS prefs was maxed at 5205k as suggested by the program.
I would post a picture but this forum will not allow a big enough image to show exactly what I am describing.
PS CS6 is fully up to date as well as all drivers for my GPU and the rest of my laptop.

I personally like to Crop, and then use PNG for my screen-caps. If I need more images, say to show other Palettes, etc., then I do one each for those shots.
We see a lot of full-screen caps posted, where aggressive JPEG is used, and nothing can be read. That is especially true with images, like Adobe Encore's Flow-chart, where there is a lot of text and linking being shown.
Just my personal preferences.

OK. Here is what just went down when I went into a corporate AT&T Store:
1. I told the sales guy that I just purchased a 3G iPhone on June 3rd online, and would like to pay the 10% restocking fee and get a new 3GS.
2. He said that would be fine and started messing on the computer and said he took the phone off my account and opted me back out of my 2 year contract I renewed.
3. The manager then came over and said they cannot issue refunds from online purchases and I need to mail it back to AT&T.
4. The sales guy then let me pre-order the iPhone 32GB 3GS iphone for $299 and said he had to keep my 3G iphone until I pick up my 3GS next friday, unless I wanted to come by sooner and "tell them how to return it to AT&T".
5. He gave me my sim card out of my phone so I could use it on a backup phone I have at home.
6. Now I am home, and AT&T website is telling me I am eligible for an upgrade (although I just upgraded at the store).
Am I officially upgraded? If I order one online get I get the one next friday in the store AND in the mail and have 2, activate 1, and sell the other one on the side? If someone has any idea what just happened please let me know.

Just got the same error message today. My phone went to the black screen of death with the error message at the top. Contacted Verizon via chat. Was online for 1 hour and 15 minutes only to find out that nothing could be done which I could have told them based upon what I had read on this site. Of course my phone is out of warranty since I have had it for 1 1/2 years and I am not eligible for an upgrade. How convenient! I was told to contact Nokia which I did and they gave me a download to try to reset everything. It looked like it was working but after almost 3 hours it got to the end and nothing happened. It just froze even though it said it was done. I rebooted the phone and am back at the same black screen of death. Guess I have to buy a used phone and then will have to reconsider whether or not to stay with Verizon going forward. I have not had any issues with the phone in the past - keep it in an otter box, never dropped, never got wet, etc. But all of a sudden it goes haywire like this that seems like either a hardware or software problem but something completely out of my control and all I get is sorry, you're out of warranty!

Hae you tried to do a hard reset of your phone? This will not lose any data. Hold the sleep/wake button and the home button until the phone turns off ignoring any slide to power off messages. Then power the phone back on.

I accidentaly pressed on "forget this devise" in the bluetooth settings. Now my iPhone would not even list my headset. How can I reverse what just happened and connect my headset? Can anyone assit please?

I accidentaly pressed on "forget this devise" in the bluetooth settings. Now my iPhone would not even list my headset. How can I reverse what just happened and connect my headset? Can anyone assit please?

You need to put the headset into pairing mode. The phone should then see it even though you have done the forget this device.

So yesterday I was online, and searching for images on google (not adult content, it was a school related search).
I clicked on the the picture and then instead of seeing the picture, I get some kind of warning from safari. I don't exactly know what it said because it happened relatively quickly. All I know was that a pop up from Safari came up that said something along the line about "not closing out and something about scanning" and in the back of this Safari message pop up I saw something that looked like it was downloading (like when you download software, and it has those bars showing you the progress of the download).
I'm really, really sorry that my explanation is as descriptive as possible. It just happened really, really fast, I didn't even get to read the whole Safari message. And then Safari says that it wasn't able to open up the page (it was the page you get when Safari cannot make an internet connection).
So basically I wasn't sure if that was actually Safari scanning the picture before it was opened. (I was even downloading the picture, I was just doing a google search). Or if it was spyware/adware trying to download onto my computer. I don't know if it was successful and was wondering what you guys thought and if you think I should download some adware/spyware. I have Clam X and haven't really used it, but I just used it to scan my documents, and everything and nothing came up.
Sorry if I'm really confusing. I'm just nervous that I may have gotten something malicious on my computer. Thanks.
Btw I have Leopard. I don't know if that changes anything. I just got my Macbook, so i really, really don't want anything to happen to it. Thanks.

I don't think I actually downloaded something. I was just worried because after I clicked on the picture, there was a Safari pop up (containing that warning). And then something on the actual screen, it looked as if something was downloaded (it may have been Safari scanning the picture) because the picture didn't open up, instead the window screen just said that it was unable to open up the page.
I was just worried a trojan or something like that may have creeped in.
I did your window download and it's just says Bio 112 (I downloaded something for my class like a week ago).
Should I be worried? Should I get some type of adware installed?
