I have successfully built a vi which communicates with a piece of equipment via the serial port using ASCII characters. I am trying to replace the older versions of Serial Read and Write VIs with the VISA Serial Read and Write VIs. The VISA Write works fine, but the when reading data coming from the "box", the VISA Read VI returns string data with foreign looking characters instead of the usual correct ASCII characters as shown by a dumb terminal which is in parallel with the serial data line. Is there a special property node which needs to be configured on the VISA Serial Read vi, or do I need to set something on the VISA Configure Serial port v

Why aren't the VISA serial vis compatible with the older serial vis?

Usually, garbage characters are an indication of a baud rate or parity mismatch, or maybe a stop bit or number of data bits setting. Make sure that you have configured your port correctly with VISA Configure Serial Port. I have used VISA serial successfully many times.

Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All that does is make you start from scratch meaning that you will have to join all of your WiFi networks again, enter passwords, etc. I'm not sure that I've ever heard of this error but it has been years since I was running iOS 4.3.3.

Depending on exactly what you want to do, there are a couple of ways of handling this. You may want to access teh user guide for some ideas: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf

What do I need to set in order for each instance of the step type in the sequence to act individually?

I'm not able to change parameters on one step without it changing the parameters on another instance of the step within the same sequence. Is there something in the step type properties that I need to set to change this?
For instance, I have created a custom step called "Battery PWR" that the user can insert into a sequence, hit the "edit" button, set a control in a GUI to 12V and hit an "Okay" button so that the post-step condition causes the power supply voltage to change. Then, later in the sequence I want the user to be able to insert the same custom step, hit the edit button, set the control to 0V and hit an "Okay" button so that the post-step conditition causes the power supply to go to 0V. The problem is, when the user edits one of the steps, it causes the other step to change to the same value.
I know that this has a simple fix, just can't seem to find it.

I answered my own question. I was reading and writing to a file global instead of the step parameters, so I was basically overwriting my variables each time I edited the step. I'm obviously a novice TestStand user.

What render settings do I need for Sony EX 1080p/35 editing?

Recently I have been plaqued with a problem that prevents me from exporting a finished file.
I've found something strange about my settings that I need help sorting. I import Sony HD EX files (1080p/35) but have the rendering set to Prores HQ.
If I go to sequences:render and carry out a full render, then any attempt to export the file, either through QT or Compressor, will fail. However, if I wait awhile, a little box appears telling me that an auto-render has taken place. In this case, I can export at will. Most of my clips on the timeline are in Prores ( after a trip to Color) but some appear in a variety of formats, from HDV to full 1080p/35mbs.
Strangely, the Sequence:render selection carries out a further render on request, after which nothing can be done again! Nothing seems to have changed on the timeline but the export fails.
It appears that I have a conflict of settings and need to sort it but I can't see what I need to do. Ideally, I'd like to go back to Sony EX and ignore the Prores but I welcome any advice.

Well, if it's 1080p TV, then go into System Preferences > Displays.
Sometimes you have to click on detect displays & a PreferencePane should appear on each display device for you to change the resolution.
Also decide if you want it mirrored, or extended. And also move the display to the correct position for extended so you are moving the mouse in the direction of the 2nd display being the TV.
Option + F1 = Brings Display preferences up immediately.
Command + F1 or F2 = from memory that's the shortcut to switch back & forth between mirroring & extended.

Upgrading RAM and your HD will give you some performance gains, but depending on what you are doing, it may not be enough. Your best friend will always be processor speed. This has a direct relation to how many cores and the speed of the RAM.
However, if you are unable to spring for a new computer, then the options of running more RAM and a biggger, faster HD should ruduce some bottle necks.

There's no really good way for it anymore. Sharing via iCloud is likely the best possible option, but I haven't had an opportunity to try that out yet. I'll need to get my hands on a Windows PC to see how an updated Windows browser displays presentations.

Hey folks. My endless quest to complete a program I have been writing for ages has at the moment brought me to this problem...
I am using lucene to search through a pile of text documents. Its great. Problem is I also have piles of images... :-( these are not text and so cannot be searched.
One good thing does come from this however- the user creates the images in the program.
I was wondering if there was a way to add a string of text into PNG files as the user saves them, so that later on, when lucene is searching to index files, it can grab the text string out of the png and index it?
So just to re-phrase my main question:
Can I set/get metadata?
If yes, what libraries/methods do I need and are there tutorials around (I havent found any yet)?

Network times out on my Windows 7 Lenovo when trying to load IOS 5 on my iPad 2 what network settings do I need to change?

When I try to upgrade my iPad 2 to IOS. 5 on my Lenovo PC it says the connection had timed out. I have disconnected the firewall and check the connection through the troubleshooting guide on the PC. Can someone tell me what network settings I need to change to make this work? Also iTunes is also up to date on this PC. If I cannot get this to work is there another way I can do a direct update to my iPad? Thanks so much

Need help setting up MoCa for superior speed for upstair room in house

Hey guys i need some help. I just upgraded my plan to the 50/20 Fios and now i really want that speed upstairs to my gameroom. Before i had the 10/2 plan where wireless was sufficient (i could get 9mpbs download speed wirelessly everywhere i needed internet using the mi424wr)
But now this crappy (no offense ) router is just not sufficient for the 50mbps download speed. Even if my laptop is RIGHT NEXT to the router, i only get max speed of 20 - 23mpbs download. Whereas if im connected via ethernet, i get the full 50+Mbps download speed. For some reason the upload speed is fine at over 20mpbs. (Anyone has any explanation for this? If other 2.4ghz devices were causing interferences, shouldnt the upload speed be affected also?) And Yes, i have changed the channel to 11 (every other wifi network is on 6)

Currently i have the ONT connect to the WAN Router VIA Coax
I also have Dish network for Tv services with the STB upstairs (same room where i want the Ethernet from MoCa to connect to PC,PS3). Not sure if relevent, but the dish is set up so that my downstair tv has acces to Dish tv VIA the coax connected to the STB upstairs. So ONE STB provides TV upstairs AND TV downstairs with dish services via Coax.
From the various articles i have read, this is my understanding of what i should do but of course im a newbie so i need your suggestions. I should add splitter the coax coming out of the ONT and connect one split to the router and the other split to the wall? then upstairs add a splitter to the coax connection from the wall and split one for dish STB and split one for MoCa actiontec which will then be connect to the internet and i could run ethernet from MoCa actiontec to ps3 and PC.
Is that anywhere even close to a working solution or im just dreaming that it would this easy? lol

So, if you're getting 22-25Mbps on Wireless G, that's about all you're going to get from it. 54Mbps is a theoretical limit with the assumption you've cut down all overhead, have a full duplex connection and are not encountering noise.
I recall seeing something on DSLReports about using MoCa with a Satellite TV provider, and it involved a lot of filtering within the coaxial to work. Ideally, you're best using a dedicated line for Coaxial if you're going to use MoCa to cut down on the complexity and risks caused by using a satellite system's coax.

Hi guys, I'm new to Mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13" (late 2011) with Lion OS and Parallels 7 (Windows 7). My understanding is that there is FireWire connection / extension built in to the MacBook Pro already. I also have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive 750GB USB2.0 and 3.0 (that can be used for PC and Mac). It states that the portable external harddrive is FireWire 800 compatible. The questions are (1) how does FireWire works ? (2) how do I use or activate FireWire 800 ? (3) is there any setup / setting changes I need to on my MacBook Pro ? (4) what FireWire adapter do I need to purchase to connect my portable external harddrive to my MacBook Pro ? Is it expensive ?
I read a few articles online but they are too technical for me. They mentioned something about FireWire adapter with 6 pins or 9 pins. Not sure what that means. I'm totally confused. So any help, advise or guidance will be much appreciated. In Layman's term would be better. Thanks.
