What's wrong with my external backup disk?
Owner of a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 where a lot of precious files are kept, I decided to back them all up to an external 1 TB Transcend around a year ago.
Everything has been going well, until I witnessed this:
Several times the notification was a little bit different:
It could have made sense because of what the storage statistics said:
BUT.
This is, there seems to be not a single backup on the HD, probably because I have manually got rid of them to make room on the disk.
But then, what takes up those 700 GB on it?
I am, sort of, not that good in this stuff, thus left clueless of what to do and how to go on backing up normally or manage the space on the disk the way I like. If anyone can give me a piece of advice, please reply! Thanks in advance.
lilsirecho wrote:Perhaps there is a limit to the size of an ext3 partition in mounting a USB external drive?
That can't be it, it worked fine for a long time. It's just that I haven't used the drive for a week or two and ever since I am not able to mount it anymore. I'm guessing something changed due to some update recently that made this happen.
Also, `fdisk -l` seems to be able to find my drive and its partition. 'sdb' and 'sdb1' also appear in under /dev. The drive is definately attached to my system, it's just that I can't mount it with hal or through the conventional methods.

What is wrong with my external drives??!
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on iMac 20 inch 2.4 ghz.
I have two external drives, one used for media, the other for my Time Machine. They are Samsung SATA drives mounted in Icy Dock enclosures. One (media) is USB, the other (Time Machine) is FireWire 400.
I've had one of these drives for about a year, and I just installed the second one yesterday. This machine has always played oddly with an external, ever since I got the first one when I had Leopard. The issue persists now with Snow Leopard.
Whenever I leave the machine idle and it goes to sleep automatically, both drives begin to spin up and shut down constantly. They run for a minute or so, then spin down, then spin back up after about ten seconds... endlessly. However, if I put the computer to sleep manually (apple > sleep), they spin down and just sit, like they should. I have "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" checked. The same behavior is exhibited whether or not it's checked.
Is there anything I can try to make these drives either stay spinning all the time (even when comp is sleeping) or to make them actually spin down when it sleeps?I am a little confused.
Which drive is the new drive that you just added? If you disconnect the new drive does everything operate normally? Have you contacted the manufacturer of the Icy Dock? -
What's wrong with my Mac's disk drive?
I have a Macbook running OS X Mountain Lion (10.7.5). It has multiple users on it because I share it with other family members. A member of our family is getting a new computer and is giving me and those who share the computer with me, the old one. The Mac I use right now has a 500 GB hard drive. However, the Mac I'm getting is a Macbook Pro with only 200 GB of storage. When I went to see how much space is used up, I saw this:
Also, I can delete other profiles if that causes a problem and make one master profile for everyone. And lastly, it seems that whatever I delete goes into either the "other" tab or "backups" tab. I don't know what these consist of. Thanks for all your help!First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal. -

A couple of years ago I was using an AppleScript file (thanks to someone else's assistance) but it no longer works.
I have an extra internal drive, that is partitioned, and used for sequential daily backups. When the computer starts up, of course all the drives mount - but I prefer that they are off the desktop until neded.
Rather than selecting the volumes and then dragging to the Trash, I found it easier to have a script run at startup which then asks if the drives should be unmounted.
Things were great - until I upgraded to Tiger.
I am hoping that someone can tell me what's wrong with the script so that I can start using it again. As you can probably tell, I don't have any experience in AppleScript. At the moment the script runs - it presents the dialogue box - and then just ends after a response, but the drives do not unmount.
The partitions on the drive are called Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Saturday
The existing script is as follows:
on run
display dialog "Unmount All Backup Drives?" buttons {"Yes", "No"} default button 1
set x to button returned of result
if x is "Yes" then tell application "Finder" to eject "Monday"
end runThis relates to another (current) thread in AppleScript discussions.
Your script works with Panther as that operating system allows INTERNAL drives to be "ejected" (and, if you eject one volume on a partitioned drive, all the volumes on that drive are ejected -- this explains why ejecting "Monday" actually ejected Monday through Friday).
With Tiger, you would find that your script works exactly as expected with EXTERNAL drives, but INTERNAL drives need a different approach.
To get behavior exactly as you had before, try this script:
--BEGINNING
display dialog "Unmount All Backup Drives?" buttons {"Yes", "No"} default button 1
set x to button returned of result
if x is "Yes" then set driveName to "Monday"
set driveInfo to do shell script "diskutil list | grep \"" & driveName & "\""
set driveID to last word of driveInfo
do shell script "diskutil unmountDisk " & driveID & ""
--END
For reasons that aren't entirely clear to me, this approach, while it works reliably, is very slow -- on my fast machine, the unmount process takes nearly 20 seconds. (Using UNIX directly in Terminal, with the same command, is very quick.) (In the AS, the delay occurs in second "do shell script.")
Another puzzle that has cropped up is described in the related thread "Applescript to Mount/Unmount a Disk . . ." (current). While the above approach works for Justin Surpless, it often prompts for a password -- unacceptable in his application. I've not seen this on my PPC (and I tried 10.4.7, which he's using); his may be an Intel Mac, if that could be the difference. -
What's Wrong with My Computer?
I have a G5 desktop computer, I believe it's referred to as a "Power Mac." My mom purchased it some years ago, I think in late 2005 shortly after this particular model was on the market.
Info is:
Version 10.5.8
Processor 4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory 4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive 240 GB (127 GB unused/available)
My mother wasn't using this computer for many years, and my 13" Macbook was giving me trouble, so she gave this one to me. It's all been great (she maxed out the memory and hard drive space when she bought it, even though it is outdated and insignificant compared to current models), except for one little thing... Browsing the internet is usually fine when it's only one window, but not always. However, it is almost a guarantee that while trying to operate multiple windows and trying to play a video, Safari will crash. And not just once in awhile. I'm talking about on a daily basis. During regular offline computer use, like Photoshop or iTunes, the computer will sometimes grey over (as if someone put a fairly thick grey film over the entire screen), and tell me I have to restart the computer. So what's wrong with it? I presume it is a physical issue (failing memory, mother board, etc.), but what?Your computer is not remotely "maxed out" with RAM.
You're describing a G5 Quad like mine (though mine was built in June of 2006), and maxed out means having 16 GB of RAM installed, like mine has.
The Frolick wrote:

That's called a Kernel Panic, and, yes, it is most often caused by hardware problems, such as bad RAM or mismatched RAM. I can't imagine how you get to 4.5 GB of RAM without exponentially increasing the risk of mismatched RAM.
RAM has to be installed in matched pairs, starting from the center slots and spreading outward: 4*3*2*1*1*2*3*4
On the other hand, my own personal experience has led me to conclude that Safari is a piece of cr@p. It causes problems just being active in the background, causing other applications to fail.
Check your RAM carefully, starting with just one pair of matched RAM sticks in the two center slots, then adding one pair at a time. Check your hard disk with Apple's Disk Utility.
The kernel panics can be caused by a damaged directory too, so if you own Disk Warrior, run it. If you don't own DiskWarrior, at least Repair Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility and use Verify Disk/Repair Disk with it.
I'd also recommend downloading and installing Applejack and run it according to the instructions.
Good luck.

My Mac is stuck on grey screen what's wrong with it and am I going to lose everything
Hopefully you have a backup, but...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward. -
something has gone wrong with my external hard drive after my macbook battery went off.. now i cannot paste or create new folder. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Bus powered external drive?
Backups?
Does Disk Utility can see and repair the drive or not?

What is wrong with the cloned HD?
Hi, there,
I have a G4 Sawtooth, 1.3 GHz, 1.6 GB RAM, with an ACARD ATA-100. An 80 GB HD is connected to the ATA bus of the motherboard, and an 160 GB HD to the ACARD. I cloned Mac OS 10.4.10 from the 80 GB HD to the 160 GB HD. I could boot the 160 GB cloned HD to the window when I was asked about the name and password. I used the name and password, which I have with my original HD. However, the window just shook my password off. I used the installation disc for resting password, and found there was no name or password for the cloned. Besides, the box for entering the name was obscured in gray that I could not enter a name there.
What is wrong with the clone? What should I do to make the clone HD completely bootable?
Thanks.
RobertInasmuch as you've provided little helpful information about how you prepped the drive and cloned it, all I can do is suggest the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them. -

So I am not sure what is going on?
Anyone have similar situation?
what did u do to get Safari working again for you?
thanksIf you're running 19.7.4, then you're installation is hosed. Safari 5.1.7 is what ships with that version. If you failed to save the ill-designed installer, then you'll have to waste resources installing again (necessitates DLing the entire 3.6+ GB monstrosity).

What's wrong with my iPhone 5c?
Last night I was on my phone until it died. It was working perfectly fine as usual. Then this morning when I went to charge it, it turned on, but the screen looked distorted and the touch was not working. The only thing I can do is turn it on and off. I took it to an iPhone repair place to see what was wrong and if it can be fixed. The guy checked it out to see if there was any type of damage to it, which there was none. He then tried to put a different screen on it but the screens he tried also were distorted and the touch did not work. Since it couldn't be fixed, I went back home and tried to plug it into my iTunes account on my computer to see if I can somehow try to fix it from my computer by restoring it or something else. However, when I plugged it into my computer, it says that iTunes cannot connect to my iPhone because it is locked with a passcode. I don't even have a passcode on my phone. I have no idea what has happened to my phone. I have had it for about 9 months and never had an issue with it before. If anyone can help me out or at least give me an idea of what is wrong with it, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Try the usual steps: restart, reset, restore.

If you try restoring from a backup and that doesn't fix the problem, try restoring to factory settings and, if the problem goes away, then synching your apps. You'll lose the app data and settings, but if the problem is due to a corrupt cache or settings file, that should cure it.
If none of that helps, your device may have developed a hardware fault and will need to be take or sent to Apple.

I need help figuring out what is wrong with my Macbook Pro
I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro with OS X Mavericks on it and for the past few weeks it has running VERY SLOW! I have no idea what is wrong with it, i have read other discussion forums trying to figure it out on my own. So far i have had no luck in fixing the slowness. When i open applications the icon will bounce in dock forever before opening and then my computer will freeze with the little rainbow wheel circling and circling for a few minutes... and if i try to browse websites it take forever for them to load or youtube will just stop working for me. Everything i do, no matter what i click, the rainbow wheel will pop up! The only thing i can think of messing it up was a friend of mine plugging in a flash drive a few weeks ago to take some videos and imovie to put on his Macbook Pro, he has said his laptop has been running fine though... so idk if that was the problem. Anyways, could someone please help me try something? Thank you!!

What is wrong with my Photoshop CS3 extended?
Hello. I don't understand what's wrong with my CS3 extended, but i don't have Render filters under Filter menu. Have everything else but no Render. Anybody ever had same problem?
thank you>
"probably bad version of photoshop...
Very possible if you didn't buy it from an authorised dealer. There have been some very convincing counterfeits being sold all over the world, and one of the tell-tales is that not everything in the application works and /or there are things missing from it.

What is wrong with my monitor photo attached
i just got a macbook pro yesterday and when i was using all of a sudden this came on the screen, and i just restarted it and it was gone. today i turn it on and this happens again. what is wrong with it.
I view the forum on a 30" display. But no matter how wide the window is, your picture shows with the right side truncated and a scroll bar. It never occurred to me that I needed to scroll to the right to see what the problem was.
You have a serious Hardware problem, and the graphics hardware is not a separately-replaceable card.
Take it back. If within the 14-day period, they will just trade for a new one. If after that, they will sometimes just trade for a new one, but THEY make the decision of whether to repair instead.
If they exchange, the genius Bar can help you copy your files, but it is always better if you have your own Backups before you go. -
What is wrong with my font? Squares instead of letters - Help!
Can someone tell me what is wrong with my system font? Everytime I need to put my administrator key the login page will appear but with weird glitched font of squared A's all around (see picture). I can't recall that I have done any installations that would mess with it.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Once Disk Reports OK, reinstall the OS.
