Which other languages compliment AS3/flash?

So, i've been learning some flash and AS3 recently as part of my job and i plan on learning some more.
I have another project starting soon (the details of which i've posted at the bottom but aren't necessarilly relevant for this discussion*).
Basically the jist is, i'm looking at learning another language and i was wondering which direction to go, what languages could be used in developing good flash applications or what languages would cover projects that flash was irrelevant for. What other languages have people gone on to learn after learning actionscript and how were they helpful? I've done a little research and found http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html in my opinion it's only worth learning something that other people are still using and that employers might consider a useful skill.
*future project details:
I have a physics simulation package that essentially outputs text files in the form of:
Generic time stamp
Next time stamp
and it goes on and on and on like that for potentially thousands of cycles- where hashes are numbers that correspond to density of a molecule at that position in a square. The grid size will vary depending on what i tell the simulation to do. (it's 5x5 now but it could be 10x10 etc)
There are a number of these output files created each time the simulation is run and each file corrosponds to the density of a different atom.
A good starting point for me would be to create a program (with an easy gui for others to use) that allowed a user to specify which of the atoms densities he wants to view and pick a start and end time and then watch a movie (essentially a slide show) of the density changing over this time. Where the density would be colour coded in some way.
Matlab has been suggested, but i'd much rather improve my coding skills by learning something more relevant to non-scientific tasks.

Speaking as a developer who has built and worked on a number of large-scale apps for long-term clients; you would need to shoot me and prise the Flex framework from my cold, dead hands before I would give it all up in favour of the huge limitations of a pure AS implementation.
Yes, it is possible to build bad, slow, heavy Flex AIR apps. Yes, it is possible to build faster, slicker, lighter pure AS apps.
But...
Once an app is out there, you need to maintain it.
And...
If you build the thing properly in the first place, performance will be comparable or better using the well-defined systems and frameworks of Flex / AIR.
Or rather...
There are things that it is better to build your own controls for than to use Flex's ones, but those things are so few and far between, and so obvious after just a little bit of performance testing, that it is almost always going to be preferable to build using Flex default and then to replace the problem items _and_only_ the problem items with home-cooked controls that _are_integrated_ with the existing Flex framework.

  • Which team can help if the name of iView is not translated in other languag

    Hi All,
Do you know which team can help if the name of iView is not translated in other language such as Portuguese?
    Thanks,
    Eda

Above statement is correct: contact Portal Team to debug the iView/application.
But you need to also check with your IT team - because it might be the case that the proper browser setting/network setting is figured to be EN (English - assuming).
To test, you yourself can verify if it's the case, change the browser language to Portuguese and test the application. If it gets translated to Portuguese, then that means it's the browser/network/ISP setting/configuration.

  • AS3/Flash Dev Teams: Help me fix Flash's Clipboard API on Linux!

    Hello!
I am hoping to get in touch with the Adobe development team responsible for the ActionScript framework (for Flash Player, in particular).  I would really like to work with them to fix this bug (or, hell, attempt to fix it myself if they'd give me access to their source control):
       https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3482860
    Long-story-short:
The "System Clipboard" API (plain text format only) from Flash 9 worked wonderfully cross-platform (Windows, MacOSX, Linux).
However, the AS3 "Desktop Clipboard" API (plain text, HTML, RTF, and custom formats) introduced in Flash 10 has issues on Linux.  In particular, it only set contents into a particular 1 of Linux's (X's) 3 clipboard/selection buffers, which prevents Linux users from pasting the copied contents into a Terminal session. The "System Clipboard" API from Flash 9 does not suffer from this problem.  (More background details are available in the Adobe bug linked above as well as the GitHub bug linked below).
This bug has downstream ramifications for a relatively popular open source library (e.g. used by GitHub.com and bit.ly) that I maintain called ZeroClipboard:
       https://github.com/jonrohan/ZeroClipboard/issues/78
As such, I would very much like to see these issues resolved, and am willing to actively help if at all possible.
If there is a better way to get in touch with the AS3/Flash Dev Teams than the bugbase or these forums (e.g. a team email address, particular dev's Twitter account, etc.), please let me know. Thank you in advance!
P.S. Yes, I know that Linux is no longer officially supported by Flash Player but I also know that Linux users still manage to install the latest versions of Flash with a few workarounds.  It is also heavily used by GitHub.com users, and is therefore a high priority user base for ZeroClipboard.
P.P.S. I also tried to get a contact via the various Adobe/Flash/Flex Twitter accounts without any success.
    Sincerely,
       James M. Greene

Epic failure. Worked hard to contact Adobe devs and finally got through to the team via their OSS director.  End result: they'll only do for security patches for Linux, won't even consider other bug fixes.

  • Other language  getURL issue

    Hi,
    Using ActionScript 2.0 Flash CS3.
I want to navigate to a foreign language URL which comes from an XML.
XML is in UTF -8 format.
After loading the XML, i used trace() statement to check the URL is correct. No problem in that.
    Successfully navigated to that URL.
But the problem is in the web page which displays the URL .
It show the other language text as question mark ?????
How to get rid of this question mark in the webpage?
    Help Please.

    Hi Ned,
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, it is displaying correctly when pasted in the browser.
I found one way around for this, I just called javascript widow.open function from AS2, other language text is displayed now.
But it would have been better if it is solved in flash itself.

  • JSAPI - other languages than English; MIDlet - settings loading; JSAPI - al

    Hello!
I need to create application which uses speech recognition. At first I thought about using CMU Sphinx (PocketSphinx or, possibly, Sphinx4). Later I thought about JSAPI. (Sphinx somehow uses JSAPI but I don't know what is the difference between JSAPI and Sphinx).
I have read almost all (up to 6.7.9) of the following tutorial: http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/speech/forDevelopers/jsapi-guide.pdf. Unfortunately I couldn't've found one important thing, i.e. how to create acoustic model for other language than English?
Thanks in advance for your answers :-)!
PS There are some other things which I'd like to know:
    1) How to load some settings from file (I guess nowadays configuration files are created with the use of XML but I dunno)?
    2) How to maintain algorithm which is used by MIDlet which involves JSAPI? I mean there are some different things which my MIDlet needs to do. I guess it is good habit to divide different goals into separate parts of code (due to object-oriented programming).
In my case there are some different things:
         a) speech recognition of audio input, i.e. changing input audio stream into output text string
         b) analysis of that text string and according to this string choosing the proper transition in my algorithm
In general I have written my algorithm on sheet of paper and it takes about ten A4 sheets of paper. Because of it I thought there should be some way to write this algoritm maybe outside the code, in some kind of file which would contain this algorithm. Maybe there is other good way to implement this algorithm, not necesarilly in the code.
         c) sending of results through httpconnection with the use of POST method
         d) receiving in on TomCat on server
    3) Which method should I use to receive the recognized speech? I found these:
         a) FinalRuleResult, b) Result -> getBestToken, c) getSpokenText, d) ResultToken of RuleGrammar
    4) Can you give me any full examples of JSAPI usage? (Not just short parts of code like in this JSAPI guide)?
    Greetins :-)!

Praveen, Yes the infoobject is language dependent.  The problem did not happen in BWQ but came up in BWP.  so I am not sure at this time what is causing in production that didn't happen in BWQ.
    Thanks,
    Syed.

  • Text Messaging in Japanese (or other language with non-Roman script)

Is it possible to send/receive text messages written in non-Roman characters with Verizon?
More specifically, I'm using a Droid 2 with Verizon, and I'm trying to text a friend in Japanese.  She has an iPhone (AT&T), and is physically in the U.S. (so I'm not asking about international text messaging).  I've already installed apps on my Droid (e.g. OpenWNN, or Simeji) to input Japanese, which work fine in and of themselves, and the Droid of course displays Japanese text or other languages just fine on the Browser or in E-mails.
However, I'm having lots of trouble with Text Messaging.  When I send a message containing Japanese text (typed in perfectly fine with OpenWNN or whatever), she either never gets the message, or the text comes out unreadable (as ???????).  Messages with a mix of Roman and non-Roman characters typically show the Roman characters ok, but the non-Roman ones (i.e. Japanese) are garbled.  If she sends me a message containing any non-Roman characters, I generally don't get the message at all (i.e. not even garbled-- just no message at all).   This deficiency seems to be specific to Text Messaging, as far as I can tell.  I can send and receive e-mails containing Japanese just fine, read foreign language web pages, and type in Japanese into search boxes on those web pages and so on with the Droid.  However, sending an e-mail message to (myphone#)@vtext.com, predictably, results in any Japanese text being garbled, though Roman characters come through just fine.
Is this perhaps something specific to Verizon's network?  Or is text messaging in non-Roman scripts just inherently impossible?  My friend says she knows others who can successfully text in non-Roman scripts (e.g. Korean Hangul, Japanese Kana or Kanji), and claims some of these folks are Verizon customers too.  A search on droidforums.com yielded someone who supposedly could text in Korean within Verizon.  So, I'm hoping this is possible, and I'm just missing something. However, this is perhaps all secondhand information and rumor.
(Incidentally, I know for certain that messaging with non-Roman scripts is possible in general.  During my last vacation in Japan, I rented a phone there, and could send messages in English or Japanese scripts.  However, I believe the phones there actually have their own e-mail addresses, and so the service there is more like regular e-mail-- my understanding is that text messaging as we know it in the U.S. is a distinct technology, though I could well be wrong.)
So, to restate my question: is it possible to text message with non-Roman scripts with Verizon?  Has anyone out there done this successfully-- if so what did you do, or what app did you use?  Or is it in fact impossible? (e.g. Maybe text messaging here only uses 7 or 8 bits, instead of 14 or 16 needed to encode all the various Asian, European, and other scripts?)
    Thanks for any help available.

I'm trying to figure this out as well, but my understanding on the matter is that Verizon's CDMA network uses unicode which will display, roman characters, loa, thai, and serveral other languages, but not hirigana, kanji, katakana, or simplified or traditional chinese.  The Romaji should work however.  It would be nice to hear some input from a Verizon rep on the subject, because like you my info is all second hand.
If my understanding is correct, the simple answer is no, it's not possible.

  • How to include the other Languages in SAP sybase brand mobiliser 5.0

    Hello,
I'm just trying to include the other languages(urdu) in brand mobiliser with common place holders as the properties file.By importing and exporting the brand flows. The text of the flow is getting corrupted..
How to get out of this problem?
    Thanks in advance

I created 2 containers (ZWCTESTURL1, ZWCTESTURL2) in my task and gave them initial values:
    ZWCTESTURL1 = mailto:test$lsi.com?subject=test
(replace "$" with "@", this posting will not let me enter email address)
    ZWCTESTURL2 = body=action:approve
I put the following line in my Task Description:
    <a href="&ZWCTESTURL1&&&ZWCTESTURL2&">test</a>
When I go into Business Workplace (SBWP) and open my workitem, I see a hyperlink named "test".  When clicked, it properly opened a new email in my lotus notes which put To, Subject, and Body text correctly.  However, when I open same workitem in Universal worklist (UWL), there is no hyperlink, just straight text.  It displays as:
    <H href="mailto:test$lsi.com?subject=test&body=action:approve">test</a>
    (replace "H" with "a")
As I suspected, I could not create hyperlinks in workitems that are in Universal Worklist.  I looked at the editor options in task description and have not any luck with what I tried to make that text a hyperlink in UWL.

  • How to display Forms messages in other language?

    Hi Folks
I have installed Forms and Reports Services 10g (9.0.4.0) in a Linux RHAS3 box
and deploy my applications with IE, the messages are in English (e.g.
frm-40100: At first record) now I want to change to Spanish.
I try to modify the default.env, with the follow variables:
    NLS_LANG=SPANISH_SPAIN.WE8ISO8859P1
    NLS_LANG=LATIN AMERICAN SPANISH.WE8ISO8859P1
and restart the OC4J_BI_FORMS component, but the message don't change to
    Spanish.
Please, could you say me in which file I have to change the NLS_LANG? and which .msb file I need to display the messages in other language?
    Thanks and regards,
    Wilson

    Hi,
    1. Set the nls_lang=language_territory.characterset in the default.env or any
    custom .env file.
    2. Check whether the required language's .msb file exists in
    <iAS_MidTier>\forms90
Note: With 9iAS rel 1 all the supported language’s .msb files are installed by
default. For 9iDS and 9iAS rel 2 and above this has to be done explicitly by selecting the "Product Languages" option.
    3. The Locale of the Client PC (Windows), which displays the Form in browser,
has to be set to the same nls_lang. Only then you would be able to see the
    Form's characters in that language.

  • Exam in other languages!

It's about The exams in other languages.
are they harder than the ones in English language?
Or, definitely it is NOT true!

Is there SCJP exam being provided in Tamil ????No. Tamil is not the national language of any country
to my knowledge. And the webpage for SCJP mentions
the languages in which it is allowed.I'd like to register a formal complaint: the Twents accent and the Frysian
language as well as the Lingua Franca 'plat Haags' are not allowed either:
    1) Doet dit graftakkuh ding ut?    pubiek noks nada meein(Lettertjus motjejoh) { }2) Doet dittut?   int i= (new Dingetjuh() != naks)?1:0;3) Welkuh kankah mongowl sgrehft dit:   int i= 1, int j= 2, growtste= (i < j)?j:i;kind regards,

  • Speech transcription in other languages.. not english

    hello,
in my speech transcription options.. is enabled only in English but in no other language .. as Spanish, which is what I need. The video interview is in Spanish. I tried reinstalling the program .. but does not work .. what may be happening? option works only in English .. all others are grayed out .. disabled. help please!

Since it does not even work in English, I would not worry about the lack of other languages. It probably was a very, very bad effort from a former Dragon employee to get it included in CS4. I just hope they leave it out in CS5, because it only bloats the software without any benefit at all.
Its far from perfect, and I have no use for it myself.  BUt there are are users who like this feature and even in its imperfect state saves them time in their workflow.  Imagine doing a docu with 90 minutes of talking heads and three camera angles.  Searching for a word or phrase by scrubbing would take a long time.  Searching by text is almost instantaneous.  The transcription isnt perfect but it often is close enough to be helpful in this workflow.
Useless for many perhaps; but useful for some.

  • IFS Manager in other languages??

    Dear friends,
I've read about Oracle Internet File System Manager at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/A97359_01/appladmi.htm#1004903 and it looked great to me.
Does anybody know if this tool is available in other languages (Brazilian Portuguese mainly!) or just in English?
    TIA,
    Vinícius

"Unicode support means that the program code level in Crystal Reports is able to recognize language
characters that are based on Unicode.
Unicode is used to display double-byte characters such as the Chinese and Japanese character sets.
This enables you to create Crystal Reports that can display right-to-left languages and multiple
    languages in a single report."
So if your data is in unicode Crystal will be able to properly display the various languages.
If you wanted one single report to be viewed in different languages, then static strings in the report would need to be converted into formula fields which changes the text into the appropriate language based on a language parameter.  Some strings could not be handled in this manner though such as custom prompting strings.

  • Crystal Reports in other languages ...

    Hi
I'm new to crystal reporting my question is can crystal reports (v10 to be specific) present data in other languages like for example Arabic even though your data source is English language? More like translate this data to that language, Is it just a matter of choosing the font when designing or its more complicated than that?
    Thanks
