Why am I suddenly getting a strange banding effect when printing.

I've been using Adobe Photoshop CS5 for the last two years and I've started getting a strange banding effect on my prints.  Photoshop seems to be the only application that is effected.  I print on a large format printer, my drivers are up to date, if I print a smaller size and fit to page (test print) the print is ok.  When I print to full size I start having the problem.

However, when something starts acting weird suddenly, that is usually a sign to re-set your Photoshop preferences.
Preferences files vary by name and location for each version of Photoshop.
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

  • Strange "strobe" effect when doing slow motion

    hi
after using fcp for a year now, i strangly encountered a problem in a video i need to deliver in 2 days.
whenever i did a 50% slow motion i get a strange "strobe" effect. when the frame is more or less static then you wont be able to see it but when the camera pans or the object in the frame moves it is very disturbing.
this is only noticable when viewed on a tv set, not on my display.
i thought it was in the encoding so i did the whole "export using QT" again, this time making sure its 2 pass VBR 6.8 to 8 mbps. still there.
i am working on a Pal system without a monitor so i burned the video onto a dvd using dvdsp (as usual) and then played it in a pal dvd player and tv but this strobe thing is still there.
b.t.w the interlace option on the "export using QT" was set as auto, the same as always.
i didnt do anything different this time but still i get that problem. what could it be ? all the settings in fcp settings are set to 100% quality and the video is fully rendered.
i appriciate your comments and help.

  • Why am I suddenly getting a "Dropped Frames" error?

    Hi,
For two years I was working on a large project in FCP 6 where I was able to do quite a bit of work without ever getting "dropped frames." Recently I deleted this entire project and loaded footage for a MUCH smaller project. This current project is MUCH less demanding. Fewer effects, fewer timelines to work with. Same exact system. Nothing has changed... except now... the mos rudimentary effects will give me dropped-frames upon playback. I know I can toggle a playback settings but how in the world is this suddenly necessary with a project that is 5% as demanding as my previous project??
In particular, the dropped-frames occur when I'm...
    * generating basic text and adding a fade to the text
    * cropping part of one shot
    The specs are the following:
    + MacPro 2.8gb 8-core, 16gb RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.4, four internal hard drives at 500gb each
+ My OS and the FCP program are on Drive 1
+ My audio is on Drive 2
+ My visuals are on Drive 3
+ My FCP file and the render files are on Drive 4
+ The project itself is using footage from a Sony EX1 camera. I'm using audio from AIFF files. The progrmam is 2 minutes in duration. I'm using very little effects at all. 1 track of video. Four tracks of audio.
What's going? Why am I now, with this new/smaller project, suddenly getting dropped frames? Was the deletion process the culprit? What can I do?
    Thanks,
    Shanked

Download and run the demo version of iDefrag : http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php
Click the drive in question wait for it to build the map then switch to the tab labelled "Files" at the bottom of the window. Sort by #Fragments and the highest will be likely culprits. If you do buy this software change the algorithm to "Optimize" for best results for video. Run it using default settings for the rest of it.
For anyone else reading this I DO NOT recommend using defrag tools on the system drive or a RAID drive. This WILL make things worse for you. Only for use on single drive scenarios. The best way to defrag a RAID array is to move the files off to another drive, wipe the RAID clean then transfer the files back again (You can do this for any file system to improve performance). This will sort the files out again. OSX manages the rest until there is only 10% of your drive left (depending on how much deleting and writing of files happens in between - it's that which cause fragmentation).
In terms of the 'size' issue (which you have no real issue with) I guessed that you meant the duration and complexity of your sequences. It's true that sometimes if you have a lot of sequences open these will use up valuable RAM (as FCP is only 32bit it can only utilize 3GB of RAM at most) and so when it is trying to buffer, cache and output the video it can trip over itself.  But your current problem is definitely down to dataflow off the drive and into FCP in time to decode and display the next frame. If it can't do it in time (within 0.03-0.04 seconds) then if detects an error and because you are in SafeRT mode it stops playback and displays the Dropped Frame error window.

I have been using Adobe Reader for many years and scan forms into my computer so that I can fill them with text. I have suddenly started getting Access Denied pop up when I attempt to do this. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why or how to correct?

Yes, I am adding comments onto a scanned image and the reader is v. 11.0.10.

  • Imported video has strange squiggly effect when there is motion

    Hey everyone,
I am trying to edit and put together a video from our honeymoon. I am brand new to macs, and the whole editing business. Unfortunately I have a Samsung SC-MX10 camcorder which is dreadful as far as mac compatibility goes. According to my research, it saves video in the MPEG-4 format using the SEDG codec.
So I finally was able to get all the files onto my mac (iMovie doesn't sync with the camcorder) and they are all .avi files. I downloaded Perian and I am able to view the files with quicktime. However, getting them into iMovie was a different story.
With much more research online, I downloaded QTAmateur which is supposedly a free version of QuickTime Pro, and I have several video converting options available. Among the list, I chose to convert them to quicktime videos. When I open up these converted files in QuickTime, they work perfectly. HOWEVER, when I import them to iMovie, they suddenly have this strange "squiggly" look whenever there is motion in the video. It gets really bad, and i don't want to have this in my final product. Does anyone know why it is doing this, or how I can fix it?
If anyone can figure this out it would be AMAZING!
    THANKS!

That's DV video for you - it runs at 13GB per hour. Your cam highly compresses the video to the MPEG4 format, which actually is detrimental to the quality of the video image.
Onu Marx stated that iMovie HD would give you better results. I think he meant to say iMovie HD6 and you may see some difference, as 08 uses single field processing, which eliminates every other line in a frame, whereas HD6 uses the whole frame. iMovie HD6 is a free download for owners of iLfe 08:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iMovieHD6
If you are unhappy with all this extra work you need to do to edit from the Samsung, I suggest you look for a new cam, preferably a miniDV tape cam with firewire, which will work seemlessly with all iMovie versions and give you great lossless DV right off the bat.
With reference to your question - "Is there no other format . . . NO.

  • Banding occurs when printing from Illustratror/InDesign on HP Designjet Z5200 PostScript Printer

Recently we got the below printer for large-format prints such as posters, banners and the like.
    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/18972-18972-3328061-12600-3328080-4122732.ht ml
However so far when printing directly from InDesign and Illustrator there have been problems with "banding" (alternating stripes of darker and brighter colors on the paper when printing).
It seems that this could have something to do with either the type of paper and/or the OS (we use both XP and Win7) on which CS5 runs but I am still unsure if these are the real causes.
After having talked to a certified HP-technician (not only a support employee!) the technician pointed towards the CS5 package as the culprit.
At the very moment we are using a workaround that the before mentioned technician advised us to use which is basically the following.
Illustrator --> Saving the Ilustrator file, then opening it in Photoshop and saving as a tiff raster image in the relevant resolution, then importing the tiff raster image into HP's HP own "Instant Printing Pro" printing application.
InDesign --> Saving the InDesign file as a pdf, then opening the pdf in Photoshop and saving as a tiff raster image in  the relevant resolution, then importing the tiff raster image into HP's  HP own "Instant Printing Pro" printing application.
These two solutions both work without banding on the final print.
However, sometimes - as mentioned before - it seems that the paper might absorb the ink better if it's of a better/thicker quality when banding doesn't seem to occur (at the moment we mostly use plain paper settings in the local printer settings display when loading a roll of paper which also is a cheaper type of paper) and while banding seems to occur mostly when printing from XP machines it doesn't always seem to occur when doing so from Win7 machines.
What's the score on the above?
Any help and input is welcome and appreciated!

    Well, I have no official
connection to Adobe, but any manufacturer who sells a product targeted
at the graphic arts industry, and then says that the reason it doesn't
work is because there's a problem with the software produced by the
graphics industry leader needs a reality check. Printer manuafacturers
have had access to Adobe for years, so there's really no excuse for an
    incompatibility problem.
Your company is a vendor? Get
escalated. HP should be all over getting this to work correctly,
including providing a RIP for you if that's what it's going to take to
implement proper printing. How do the expect you to demonstrate or
recommend this printer if it stripes the background?
    Peter -->
You are right about basically anything that you said and I agree that this should be HP's headache. But it's not so simple at the moment.
First of all I'd hate to stand back like a dummy if it would turn out to be a minor driver setting issue or another insignificant problem that creates the banding. On the other hand it would of course also be the local HP-support failing since they didn't manage to tell us about it in the first place and that's really their job and responsibility but under any circumstance, I'd like to give the ideas and suggestions from the other participants further up this thread a chance and see if the pdf-printing or other ideas work. In other words..., if I'd complain to HP it had to be bulletproof.
Secondly we are supposed to sell these and similar products to our clients and if I should start a dicussion I'd have to argue not only with HP who would most likely claim that the workaround they told us works (in a way) and that this was a result - at least to them - as well. I might also have to start discussing with the CEO of our company, the purchasing department and the marketing director (the latter actually said some time ago when we had the first problems that if the printer didn't work according to the HP-consultant's promises they could have it back, so there is at least some hope there). At the moment I am too busy at work and too low paid to be getting into this. And I seriously doubt that HP would give us a RIP to be testing this off even though we'd argue that the clients won't be able to work this out if we don't do. They'd probably just say that it's mainly for plotting charts and architects or stuff or find a whole range of other excuses. It's not certain and there could be positive surprises but I'd say that that's not likely.
There is one other thing Peter that I am still wondering about...
If you take a look again at the fourth and last picture-link I posted you can see the exact same print as in link no. 3 but whereas the third link shows banding the last - the fourth image link - shows no banding at all. Now I am not a 100% sure anymore if these were both printed directly from Illustrator but to my best knowledge they were since I printed all of these banners the same day and I don't recall saving to tiff or using other programs. I might be wrong but if that's the case then the thick HP-paper doesn't band whereas the thin does. That's the reason why I stated previously that the banding might occur with thinner paper (or wrong paper load settings) and doesn't occur with thicker paper at all. As mentioned I don't recall this action a 100% but am pretty sure. Also therefore I would like to run another test when I get more time and won't be so busy at work as I am right now.
Do you think there could be a difference there...?
    macinbytes wrote:
I'm guessing they have the same crappy Colorburst software that shipped with the HP we got and it's never going to get good with InDesign or Illustrator transparency. We have the thermal printer that is 6x more expensive and the software is still bad. At version 9.3 it still fails on InDesign transparency.
We just make tiffs or normalized PDFs for files containing InDesign transparency. Illustrator transparency generally works better than InDesign, but isn't infallible. Anything that uses the gradient feather tool in InDesign I don't even bother with a test print to see if it gets it because I know it will fail 100% of the time.
If they are a vendor they are in a Catch 22 if they do it right and go for a solution that normalizes the files properly before sending to the garbage software that ships with it. When you are talking about an entry level thermal inkjet the software package isn't going to be robust. Something like a GMG or other solution to handle all the show devices files works, but at best you are disingenuous about how files are being handled with your clients and face pushback when they can't run all the cool tricks to them when they get it out in the field.
Happens with Colorburst, happens with Colorgate, happens to a lesser degree even with the lower end Creo RIP. Fiery seems to get it good somehow, but doesn't power a ton of inkjets.
HP support is phonetag hell anyway for inkjets. They buy out tons of companies that produce anything printing like ColorSpan and provide bare minimum support on the products they slap an HP tag on. They want to sell inks and papers. They don't make the software and license it in bulk like the crap they load on their computers. They also usually ship with old software that needs at least a couple point releases before it is current, but even the current software on their thermal printers sucks at InDesign transparency. HP may need a reality check on their software, but I doubt they get it. They've got a sufficient stranglehold and supporting what is essentially a bottom of the barrel portion of their printing business is in the high maintenance low yield square for them.
    macinbytes -->
Wow, now THAT is scary reading...!
If what you wrote is true then things really start looking bleak. But I can recognize some of the problems that you are mentioning although I am not into all of the details that you are writing about in your thread. But it sure looks like they just mass produce and try to keep support to a bare minimum whereas they are scoring big bucks on the media, inks and other accessories and then hope that complaints will die and people will just give up in the end.
It does make sense also seen in light of the fact that our local HP-consultant who "introduced" us to the printer praised it to the sky with a lot of "sales mambo jambo", trying it out in HP's own "E-share & Print" (which I was told by the HP-technician was the wrong HP-print program, instead he made me download and install the "Instant Printing Pro") whereas he NEVER even tried it off in any of the Adobe programs or asked some of our employees to do so.
If you are getting more info in regards to the development in these cases or solutions software-like speaking I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks for your time and for posting.

  • Strange layers issue when printing

    Hi Guys,
I am having a strange issue which is probably easy to fix however I am not a heavy adobe user and dont know where to start.
This is the rough process to explain my point but a summary is - when printing PDF files they do not appear as they do on screen.
A picture/document is created in Adobe Illustrator, an outline PDF is then created and saved
I can open the outline PDF successfully, in newer versions of PDF Reader (v8+) the PDF displays on screen correctly. In older versions the PDF is missing lines or various things.
If I print this PDF all these lines etc still missing. I know this sounds vague but I will try and explain.
An example is this - the document is a black box with a silver smaller box on top in the centre. On the screen it shows correctly. When I print, the black box is printed with no silver box.
I have just discovered that the silver box is actually printed however its printed in the background so I think its got to do with layers? If I make the black box to be white, and then print I can see my silver box, so its clear it has been printed in the wrong order.
Oh another thing I have found is the default format for saving PDF files is v1.5 if I choose an older version, the layers are printed correctly
I have both Adobe reader installed on Mac's and PC and the issue happens on both
Surely all the printers I have can't be all in-compatible
    Printers:
    Kyocera KM-4050
    Kyocera FSC5200
    Canon MX850
    Lanier MP2500
    Lanier MP2800

This is not a scanning resolution factor and I have been scanning this way for years. These scans are not photos but documents. This problem just started.  And as I said before, the problem also occurs when doing a save as from Illustrator, as well as supplied files from clients, so the scanning process has nothing to do with it. I just can't get them to print right.

  • Strange error message when printing to PDF

I am surprised that no one else has reported this issue. Searching the net, I found only one other mention of it. Using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1.2, when printing a document from any application using the Adobe PDF printer, the document will print correctly; however, the printer icon with a question mark will appear in the system tray and the error message "This document failed to print" will appear. When I open the Adobe PDF printer, the document is there with the status "Error - Printing".
I can successfully delete the document (with error), though the actual .pdf document is created just fine; it is just returning an error and holding the document after every print. I have tried deleting the Adobe PDF printer, reinstalling Acrobat (both using a repair installation as well as uninstalling and reinstalling) all with the same results.
There is nothing being logged into the system or application logs, either. I have seen this happen with two OSs at work, Vista Home Premium and WinXP SP3. Can someone guide me to a solution?

Well I can give you what I did to get around the problem.  I am running Adobe X pro on windows 7.
    1.  The print job in queue, cancel it so that it is deleted.  You now should have no jobs pending.
    2.  Go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers(Win7) or just the printer and devices for your OS.  Yes this must be done with Admin privilages.
    3.  Go to Printer Properties for the Adobe PDF printer.
    4.  Select the ports tab.  Mine was on Com3.
    5.  Select Add a Port and call it Adobe Printer or something.
    6.  Select the check box and select apply.
You should now print with no errors.
    -G
Yes I am aware this has been a year, but this has happened over several versions.

The story goes on. I am sharing this with other users for information only based on my experience with the product. I've owned a MAC since they were first introduced in 1984 and have used Norton for years. If the virus Bloodhound was real, and not just a false heuristic positive (which is totally possible) it came in on the heels of my downloading a free PDF OCR X (before reinstalling the updated version of Norton for 10.8.3) and using it to convert .jpgs > PDF OCR X text >MS Word > Adobe .pdf as that virus (Bloodhound.PDF.20 is known for exploiting weaknesses in Acrobat and Adobe .pdfs). I have never been happy having to use the MS Office suite of office products for MAC, but EXCEL on a PC is only compatibile with EXCEL on a MAC.
When I got the Bloodhound warning after running a quick scan, I ran a full scan (1,050,660 files) with the same result. I looked at my terminal - nothing happening. I called Norton, who in turn convinced me to purchase an $89.98 subscription + $19.95/month for their spyware and virus removal service (the same sales pitch I've heard from other security providers who sell services through panic). The tech, who said it was probably false, played around with my computer via remote login, and then signed off, saying everything was okay. I reran a full scan and there was the virus again. Called tech support again. Finally got the virus quarantined and tossed it. The reality is that there was a 50/50 chance that it was something because of the way MS Word was behaving when I tried to save the file created from the ocr'd jpgs (error message: disk full- when I have 250GB of free disk space). I had to resave the files with a different name and place them in alternating folders. That havoc is now gone, but I will not be keeping the subscription. Just FYI.
