Why shouldn't i buy a mac?

I realy need windows if i buy a mac! i have a few questions did a lil research not much tho... hope its not to repetitive.
1. If i successfully install windows on a macbook pro would i still need the mac OS or could it be uninstalled?
2. I've heard that you have to restart the computer in order to switch between windows and the mac OS.. visa versa is this true in all cases?
3. How easily are my files interchangeable from one OS to the other(if at all)? Would i need 2 copies of a file? one for each OS?
4. What are/is paralles(i think thats how its spelled)?
5. Does windows run slower on a mac then on a pc?
6. Will my pc hardware work via usb with windows installed(printer, scanner,etc..)?
7. If windows goes hay wire cause of all those crazy viruses will it affect my mac os? could i recover files from windows while in the mac os?
8. What kind of corners am i going to take trying to get windows to work "all options go" on a mac, besides the basic bootcamp install?
9. What do you think the chances are of windows vista working on a mac book pro upon release?
10. If you think ill be unsatisfied with windows on a mac.. could you find me a laptop PC.. around 1 in thick less then 6 pounds and similar specs to a mac book pro lol?
I have just started using macs at school. I think their awsome, but lacks compatiblity with some of my fav games and software.. Thats to hoping windows on a mac changes something.

Hello Audio62,
And Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If your a "gamer", hardcore or not, you don't want a Mac as you will probably experience some disapointment and incompatability issues as well as some games not even being produced for the Mac.
You can build a game-pc with premium components such a video cards designed to handle the graphics much less expensivly than investing in a Mac. Any of the gamer magazines have add's for systems in the back.
You don't mention what other other PC software you use so I can't offer advice on what would or would now work well.
A lot of us that have switched from the PC to Apple did so for the ease (even beauty) of the OS, the lack of the "blue screen of death" and having to deal with an OS that was a fragile as a house of cards; on the PC everytime you add the next program chances are everything comes crashing down. I've not had a system crash since switching in 2004, have ext. components that plug in and just work, and the two programs that I do need MS for, Word and Excel, run better under the Mac OS X system than they do on my PC.
So in answer to your post question, "Why shouldn't i buy a mac?", my answer... To play games.
(I know for those of you out there playing games on the Mac that it does work, but price-cost-speed ratio for game playing on a PC vs Mac is just not there. Yet)
Good Luck,
Bill Gallagher

  • Why the **** did i buy a mac when the product *****!

this is utterly dissapointing i am ****** off with apple's macbook 2010 product! the back of the mac book is constantly cracking with everyday use and no abuse

I don't know where you managed to get a 2010 model. Did you buy it used? If you got it on sites like ebay or such, it also could quite possibly be fake. You can go to an apple store and have them see if its fake or not. I don't know how a macbook could crack so easily. I would suggest going to an apple store and complaining to them.

  • Airport Express problems the ongoing saga....and why I wouldn't buy a MAC

    Hi to all,
I bought two AEX(n) boxes in Feb 2009. Out of the box, both of them dropped out music from iTunes. Over the past year this is what I have done to try and coax the AEX to work.
    - Initial OS Windows XP Feb 2009 itunes 7 & 8. Asus W2J notebook. Problem : Drop outs on audio every 30seconds
    - May 2009 new install of Vista Ultimate on Sony Vaio FW notebook. Itunes 8 & 9. Audio drop outs, Utility fails to see AEX. Bought Linksys WRT360N router. No change.
    - Jan 2010, New install Windows 7 with SSD, 5.4.2 Airport installer itunes 9.02. Problem : Utility can initially detect the AEX, but fails to find the device after firmware upgrade to 7.4.2. The utlity can configure other, which is strange, so it can detect the AEX. Different Firewalls to initial setups.
Apart from the above, I have reset the AEX to no avail, switched off cordless phones, microwaves, change channels on router, changed locations, poured over information from these forums to see if a current fix would work.

  • Why Should I Buy Another Mac Book Pro

I purchased a Mac Titanium Powerbook back in the day when it was so fresh and new, big bucks.  Within 2 years the logic board began freezing all the time.  It was fixed with big bucks again.  2 years later the laptop began doing the same thing, freezing up and so I went along with the extremely annoying issue.
When the Mac Book Pro came out I decided to start fresh with a new computer, with big bucks of course.  Guess what happened 2 years later as i lived in another town, took it to another Mac repair place.  They told me the Logic board was dead.  So after big bucks I replaced it, so rediculous.  And now, 2 years later it is freezing again, not only that, I can't connect to my wifi anywhere I want to in my own place with my own internet.  I have to walk to certain spots in my place so my Mac Book Pro will communicate with my router that always worked with the new Mac Book Pro since day 1.  But, after these updates Apple puts out to better the system, at some time it borked my internet connection.  Reading these boards and seeing similar problems with other Apple users and seeing there is no solution is decerning.  Then seeing a new security update from Apple about detecting virus popups and nothing addressing it's wifi issue is the last straw for me.
My wife bought a Toshiba 4 years ago and we put win7 on it when it came out since vista is disgusting.  There isn't one problem with her laptop, nothing.  And you can run still get on the internet with a laptop that runs win98.  I cant even load a page when I get on my Mac Titanium Powerbook, that has to be connected to the internet via ethernet cable becuase detecting wifi on that is something that never occured, even though it should.
I am on the fence, Mac vs PC?  Pricey vs Something that breaks less?
So why should I buy another Mac computer?

I don't think the experiences of a place where people discuss problems is necesarily an indicator of the overall populace using the product. Just as if you went to a hospital, you could not ascertain the relative overall health of everyone who is not in the hospital.
Statistically, you are probably an ideal candidate for a MBP, as it is extremely unlikely that you would have another problem of similar character. That is of course assuming that nothing you are doing is cutting short the life expectancy of your computers.
I am on my 4th MB variant, and have only had one major issue, which was handled terrifically by Apple. However, I am not entirely without worry that an electromechanical device nmade by humans can't fail. That is why I also have had AppleCare on everything.
But we differ in one great respect, I think. I figure that any computer i buy has a maximum life expectancy of 3 years. I have never used a computer longer than that, and I am routinely trading up within that time period. This time will be different though. I've only had my MBA for a little over 6 months, and It can't come any sooner that I'll move to the new one in about a month, if it nears my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the value you place on longevity. But I really think that unless your activities are especially harsh in a physical manner on your computers, then it is unlikely you will have the same experience once more. I do beleive that the current units are as good or better than anything Apple has had in their notbooks, in terms of quality.
But it is your decision,, that should be based on ALL facts and not just the experiences of those who visit a help forum.

  • As an engineering student why would you buy a Mac over a PC?

Hello Everyone. I am an egineering student and I have an important question. Why would I buy a Mac over a PC? What are the advantages to engineers in using Mac. When I ask sales people they can only tell me that they are secure, and easy to use, but I am not sold. Anything you can share whether it's software related, hardware related, personal stories, company success, anything will be of great help. I am not looking for an answer for one particular type of engineering. Anything related to any field, mechanical, industrial, electrical, bio, anything would help. Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
As an Engineer myself I expect to use consumer software/hardware devices without training. If it's not intuative then the Engineer who designed it has not worked hard/smart enough. I use Windows 2K / NT at work (and previously at University) and am constantly frustrated with how lazy the design of the software and hardware is. Even applications like Outlook - seem to crash on me daily (and it's not just me I see all my colleagues battling too!) At home I've never owned anything but Macs - I won't subject myself to the pain of Windoze in my leisure time!
However when I was reading for my degree in engineering, owning a Mac proved more of a problem; I was having to run Win98 in emulation on Mac OS to run engineering software that I needed to study with (I was calculating Aerial transmission patterns in MathCAD; or laying out circuit boards etc). However it was still doable - if very slow back then!
Nowadays with Macs having Intel chips and with Bootcamp Windoze will install on your Mac for the occasional time that you need to use that bespoke software.
The rest of the time the Mac is a far nicer machine to use (I bought MS Office at student price) for reports, presentations, multimedia, Internet surfing etc etc. The slight extra expense of initial purchase of the Mac is soon saved as you don't have to buy security software or worry about viruses.
If you want to code your own software for a particular application then all the tools are included with the Mac and the Unix code makes the machine very customisable in that respect.
Switching to a Mac will be a steep learning curve... not because it's difficult - but because 95% of computers useers have mastered the way that MS like to do it. Actually it's never all that different though.
You'll also get plenty of support in these board - I've never known such a helpful place!
You can also get good discounts on many many items on the Apple Store for education... check out the links for your country from www.apple.com.

  • Why I couldn't buy mac OS Mountain Lion on my credit card. It says some verification !?

Why I couldn't buy mac OS mountain Lion on apps store?

Just look at the card you are using. It will ask you to verify your method of payment and all of that but that again is just to verify its you downloading the OSX from the APP Store. I looked at my account and Apple will send you a reciept for the payment of the OSX from the APP Store ($32.08 with tax). They have only charged me once.
Note: You have to wait for it to download completely, before you go to install it on another computer. This allows the purchase to register on the Apple Database. You will then be able to download on the other computer from the APP Store. It will prompt you for billing information which is just a verification method and then it will download to the computer. From my experience it did not charge me twice. My bank posts transactions rather quickly, so I was able to verify this when I did it on my second computer.

  • If I buy the Mac pro and iMac combine it together would it be faster?

If I buy the Mac pro and iMac combine it together would it be faster or I just buy the mac pro and Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch)?

If you buy a Mac Pro 2013, use the iMac for casual stuff and use the Mac Pro for media creation work.
Maxed out iMac with 4-core 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD PCIe is nice.
Mac Pro with 6-core 64GB dual graphics for $1000 more might run rings around it.
Why not look them both up on Geekbench.
Some people really need and like having two systems, maybe laptop (Air) and a more powerful system.

    - Try another payment method.
    - Contact iTunes
Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us
    - Create a NEW account using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.

If you can wait about a 3 months after 10.8 is released this summer and upon new hardware you should be in excellent shape to have not only a fastest latest machine, but a OS X version that all the bugs have been worked out. Plus the three free months of Apple hand holding while they figure out what they did wrong with the new OS version.
If you need a new machine now you'll have to get what you need obviously, but 10.8 should run on it just fine. However know that Apple tweaks things with more currently sellling hardware first, then later gets to the previous released models.
It's been my guestimation that your good for about two year old hardware with very recent OS X release, three years or older hardware you may want to reconsider sticking with the previous OS X version as your hardware is getting dated and likely has only a year left to go anyway (4 year average), so why bother mucking it up, slowing it down and having to buy all new/updated software and third party hardware because they won't make drivers for your new OS version?

  • Wait for Intel G5 or buy power mac pro intel now????

This is for video and multimedia processing and i know Qaud g5 is best on the market right now but i need somnething within a few months with fast processing power with intel because that will be the newest tech. that wont go out of date anytime soon. So what do I do Wait for power mac G5 Intel which i predict in year or just buy the mac book pro but scared it won't process as fast as i think it will. I just absolutly cant handle when using multiple layers and when I edit them waiting for the process time to make each of the changes. WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!!

You're not even comparing apples to apples here. The MBP is faster than the G4 Powerbooks, but it will in no way compete with a Quad G5! Not to mention, the MBP maxxes out at 2GB memory, which although good, is not nearly enough for serious mutimedia processing like you mentioned. If I didn't already have a D2.5, I'd buy a Quad now - why wait.

Your payment method must be associated withe same country where you reside in order to update your apps.
"Although you can browse the iTunes Store in any country without being signed in, you can only purchase content from the iTunes Store for your own country. This is enforced via the billing address associated with your credit card or other payment method that you use with the iTunes Store, rather than your actual geographic location."
The Complete Guide to Using the iTunes Store
Same policy for the Mac App Store.
Open the App Store then scroll to the bottom of the window then select the round flag icon on the right to change the country.

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
    Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future.

  • Almost ready to buy a Mac, but....

Hi I am this close to buying a Macbook for my wife who has been using windows pc for the past several years as a "classic user". I have the following questions, which may appear too simple / dumb to the experienced users but we are struggling getting to the bottom of this and want to make sure before splurging close to $2500 on a Macbook Pro (she really likes the look of the mac, thats why). Her needs are basic (email, chat, internet, word processing) and slightly advanced (audio/video playback & editing - from digital voice recorders, camcorders etc):
-> Does Firefox work equally well on Macs?
-> Do chat applications like Yahoo Messenger, Gmail chat, Skype etc work on a Mac?
-> Can iChat support a "windows" user on the other end using chat apps like yahoo, etc?
-> Does Openoffice work cleanly on a Mac? Essentially, she wants to use basic office functions but wants to be able to share docs with windows PCs as well. The apple retail store guy strongly recommended we buy MS-Office for Mac which felt quite strange
-> Any recommendations on native Mac applications that will allow us to "transcribe" digitally recorded audio files (planning to use ipod adapters to record and then transcribe using things like dragon naturally speaking but they work only with windows)?
-> In general, can we share files created in a Mac with a PC (or vice versa) if they have the same extension (seems silly to ask but is a .jpg created on a pc exactly the same as a .jpg created on a mac??) Anything to watch out for?
-> How much overhead does "parallels" impose when switching between Mac & Windows apps? or how much memory / processor capacity is recommended?
Thanks in advance for any insights!

I am in same position as the OP - about to buy a Mac after being on Windows.
I had similar questions, and I am a bit confused over one of the answers. About chatting. I have several people I Instant Message with using AIM or MSN Messenger. The answer was that certain chat programs, like yahoo messenger, would work, but then it said iChat couldn't support people on other end using MSN.
Does that mean that I will Not be able to sue MSN Messenger and AIM to chat with people who are using those programs? If not, is there something I CAN use to accomplish that?
And another switchiver question: I have years worth of emails on Outlook. Is there a way to import outlook mail into Mac? I cannot seem to find the folders which contain my outlook mail. Assuming I will be able to find them, will hey be compatible with mac mail if I load onto a disk & transfer to the Mac?
And will I be able to sue Gmail on the Mac?
And lastly - here's a super LOW TECH question. The way my computer desk is set up, I will need at least a 40" cord from the keyboard to connect to the Mac desktop. Can anyone tell me if the cord that comes with the 20" Intel Mac is long enough? I have not had luck with wireles keyboards, so prefer wired.
    THANK YOU
