WHY won't AppleTV support other video file formats?

I understand that the latest version of AppleTV STILL does not support the variety of video formats that are playable in Front Row. I use Front Row all the time, I just don't understand why Apple is restricting AppleTV so much. File conversion is too time-consuming and more trouble than its worth. So if anyone out there at Apple is listening: I will not buy an AppleTV until it can play other file formats, and not just the (extremely limited) selection that they want to sell me from the ITunes store.
If anyone else out there can explain this policy, I would love to know the reason.

I know it's only my own opinion but I'm not to sure what all the fuss is about formats. The main compression types in use are mpeg. The tv supports mpeg4 within the restrictions placed on it by complexity levels due to hardware limitations. Mpeg2 as pointed out needs licensing and anything over SD is likely to require too high a bitrate for the tv. Mpeg1 is just plain useless for large screen viewing.
The lack of support for container types seems quite reasonable to me.  support their own container (.mov) and the standard mpeg4 container (.mp4), which should really be enough. You can add plug-ins for other container types to your computer which allows them to work in front row for example, but allowing users to modify software on consumer devices is not all that practical and not a road  have chosen to go down.
In producing video for my own use I use a variety of formats that suit my own needs, if I were producing these videos for distribution I wouldn't, I'd choose .mp4 and then anyone could watch them.
May I suggest that it isn't 's fault you can't play the video files you have acquired, but those that have produced them who have chosen to use a limited delivery method.

iphoto 9.5.1 shows mpeg-4 video files as a thumbnail, but will not play the video.  When try to play video it shows as a black screen.  Other video files play ok- (mpeg, .mov).  What do I have to do to view them?   If I use imovie they will play, but I sometime like to view them in iphoto.  It worked before I upgraded to 9.5.1 and 19.9.2 of the operationg system.

Select the thrumbnail of one of the videos and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option.  That should take you to the original mpeg4 file.
If it does then try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • Why won't elements 12 download raw files from Nikon D810?

Why won't elements 12 download raw files from Nikon D810?  I got a message saying that the camera model is not supported by installed version of camera raw.  How do I fix it?

Photoshop Elements questions should be posted in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum. Somehow your thread got posted in the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum (video editing).
You can re-post your thread in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum or wait for a moderator here to see your thread here and move it from here to there.
My opinion on this....from the Photoshop Elements perspective...
Nikon D810 is supported by Camera Raw 8.6 and higher (latest version of Camera Raw is 8.7)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
At the same time, the Camera Raw version needs to be supported by the Photoshop Elements version.
Photoshop Elements 12 appears to support Camera Raw up to 8.5 which does not support the Nikon D810.
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    Solution...
    a. switch to Photoshop Elements 13 (comes with Camera Raw 8.6 and can be updated to 8.7).
    b. use the DNG Converter in Photoshop Elements 12

  • Why won't some photos or videos sync to my iPad when they work fine with iPhoto and iTunes?

Why won't some photos or videos sync to my iPad when they work fine with iPhoto and iTunes? Other photos taken with same camera sync fine from iPhoto while certain events are inexplicably incompatible. I've recently foundvthecsame occurrence with certain mp3s and videos from iTunes.

For photos try deleting the photo cache from your computer and then re-try the photo sync and see if they then copy over - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314
Not all video formats that work in iTunes are compatible with the iPad - the supported formats are (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) :
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Have you tried Advanced > Create iPad Version and then sync those versions to the iPad
The iPad's supported audio formats are :
HE-AAC (V1 and V2), AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

Is Adobe software overpriced? Opinions vary.
And FCPX is a bloated inefficient Apple app not ready for prime time, but will function nicely as a hardware upgrade requirement, it's already started. Why do you think it's so cheap.

  • My i-Pod Classic 160GB won't load MPEG-4 video files.

My i-Pod Classic 160GB won't load MPEG-4 video files, a message says "file type not supported." I've checked the file types I have been able to watch in i Tunes and these are MPEG-4 video files and these work ok. Any help?...Thanks.

The files didn't actually contain any video! They were corrupted.

  • Why does apple only support mp4 videos?

It's not really a problem, i usually use my friends computers to convert my videos since mine is so slow.
But why does apple only support MP4 and MOV formats? Why not MPEG or DivX?
I know they cannot use WMV because it is a Microsoft format.
It's just sometimes when i convert videos, the audio becomes out of sync or iTunes complains it's not playable on my iPod.
I would just like to know why?
    Thanks for your time.

If Apple chooses to go with H.264 or MP4 or whatever else they want to support, maybe it would be real nice if iTunes could automatically convert to those formats. So if I dropped my universally standard (and supported by most DVD players) DivX video clip in the library, iTunes would convert and format the video to an iPod friendly format.
So, let me see if I understand this correctly. You want Apple to pirate proprietary codecs from DivX and build them into iTunes QT access. Tell me, does this mean that Apple is working as your agent and you will be the one spending time behind bars or paying the fines. Or, are you saying that Apple should act as an agent for DivX and charge you for a version of iTunes with legal codecs installed. How about Windows Media? Want to double the cost? What about Real? Or maybe Apple should have different versions of iTunes -- one for you and one for the guy who lives next door who uses old Indeo files?
I have tried several 3rd party converters and they all suck.
Perhaps you should be more selective in choosing a converter or invest in a commercial product which is supported by the people selling it.

    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

  • Why is there no support for RTF files in Pages?

Why is there no support for RTF files in Pages?
    This is nuts!

    You are not alone.
Actions speak louder than words, but Apple does manage to still distract many from what is self evident before them.
I am astonished by those who swear that non-existent features, or features that pre-exist the current version make Pages 5.2 a major upgrade.
An affect that does seem to wear off with familiarity, as each version of Pages 5 gets a boost in the App Store, only to see the disapproval rating surge back again.
Pages was always one of the top purchases in the App Store, now it doesn't even rate.

  • Needs to support additional video file types.

I would like to see LR 4 support additionals video file types. I have CS5 Premiere Pro and use this to capture video from a Sony HDR-HC7. PP 5 captures video from camara in mpeg format that LR 4 is not surporting.
I would like LR 4 to suport the capture formats of CS5 Premiere Pro.

You should put a feature request in the official forum.
For the moment I find over there just one idea, which asks for less than you want:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/viewing_dv_files_in_lightroom_4
So if you open your idea over there and post the link here, you get broader notice and hence more votes to support it.

  • Feature request: Slideshow module support for video files

I'm very excited about your MTS support!
Feature request: Slide show module  support for video files...
Say you have 10 takes to choose from. Are you able to almost like SLIDESHOW view the 10 clips full screen so you can decide, like a playlist? Or rate them as they play? It would also be great, like SLIDESHOW to be able to export a MP4 with a title, the 10 clips you are working with, and maybe add an end title and a song, just like SLIDESHOW.
I have found editing stills like this in slideshow far faster than in any other editing program.
Basically, I just need a fast means to view or export an MP4 of a set of video clips to review. You are almost there.
    great job!!!
    Max

I was also disappointed that video is not supported in the slideshow module -I currently have to use another solution when I want stills mixed with videos, would be great to be ablo to keep it all in LR!

Why won't apple support siri on iphone 4 ?

We are just users like you. So we can't answer that question. However, there are hundreds of posts about it, so a search of the forum might be enlightening.
The iPhone 4 is four generations out of date. Have you noticed that when any company releases a new product or version of a product it has features that previous versions did not? If it didn't then what would be the point of coming out with a new version?

  • Why won't Apple support printing to mobile 3 rd party printers

Why won't Apple support printing to mobile 3 rd party printers

It's up to the printer manufacturer to provide an app for printing from. Many do, and any support AirPrint which is what iOS devices use for printing.
It's not Apple's job to create printer drivers for every third party printer on the market. Printer manufacturers provide drivers with their products.

    Hi David,
Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?
Do you have any stored preferences for PDF files in Firefox?
