Why would battery die within an hour of having been fully charged?

I have an iphone4 which I usually leave charging over night. This morning I saw it was at 100% unplugged it and went about my things, about an hour later I came back to get the phone and it showed battery life at 17%.
Is it normal for the battery to die within an hour of having been fully charged and without having used the phone at all during that timeframe? Has anyone experienced this before?

There are several possibilities: Your battery may be failing, or it has failed.
You may have an app that is stuck in a loop sending data continuously. If this is the cause the phone will also get hot to touch.
Your battery gauge may be way out of calibration. It can get out of calibration if you never run the battery down to zero before recharging. Apple recommends doing this once a month. To recalibrate it run the battery down to zero until the phone shuts off, then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger without using the phone.

Have you attempted an iTunes restore and setting up as a new device? Sometimes battery life issues can be caused by corrupted iOS software.

  • My 16b 3gs was working perfectly.  The battery died and I plugged it in correctly to charge and it also neohook up to itunes for restore.  It also had a little exclamation button that reads: IMEI:unknown and just below it read ICCID: Unknown. Nothing else

My 16gig ipone 3gs was working perfectly since it was replaced only a month or to prior.  I was visiting with some friends around the ole pipe and low and behold the phone was completly dried of it's go juice.  One we noticed I reached into the kitchen and plugged it in to the outlet.,,,  The battery died and I plugged it in correctly to charge and it also said Emergency calls only in various foriegn languages. It also said to plug it into your itunes. All the while haviing no calling options to say the least.  I followed the apple instructions perfectly when it said that there was a new version of itunes I should download first, prior to refreshing it.  It went through all of the installing and so on then at the end you still get a useless phone that doesnt work.  IMEI: unknown and ICCIC; unknown (both of which can be found by you on the box or on the sim card case.  I  completley removed the sim card and it worked in my hubbies 3g.   I tried several times and also AT&t had made sure the imei and iccic where correct.  So I spent hours getting nowhere with this.  Its new and nice and broken.. Im going to leave that Apple store with a brand new iphone 4 tomorrow.  Simply b/c it is for my pain and suffering and for giving me a crappy refurbished phone.  Fair is fair.  So if you've found a way to fix great, but Im going to get that free iphone 4  xoxo  toodllloooo

    - Try another cable

The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.
Thus, if you get it to work restore to factory settings/new iPod, not from backup

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Battery died in 2 hours with 50% power ... HELP HE...

Am traveling out of country... been trying to keep nokia lumia 900 charged up at all times...last night went to bed with little over 50% power in battery and in about 2 hours, battery was totally dead... ????  don't know why...
I try not to let battery go totally dead before putting on the charger.. what caused the battery to suddenly lose all the power it had in a couple of hours...  I can't afford this battery to do this when traveling.. I need the phone.. and where I am .. I have no idea how to get a battery changed in this phone... since I cannot buy a new battery and install myself...   Don't know why Nokia made a phone that the consumer cannot change the battery in it by himself... this is not good...  I can't have the battery reaching 50% power and then suddenly have it go dead in short time... I had hard time getting it to respond to the electricity charger this morning when I plugged it in...
WHY WOULD THE BATTERY DRAIN THIS FAST WHEN NOT IN USE... IT HAS NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE...THIS IS FIRST TIME IT HAS GONE DEAD..
Please advise...  I need to make sure I have battery life when out of the country and I do the best I can to keep it charged up all the times...
    thank you
    Barbara

Really dont know the answer, but it is better not to discharge the battery cmpletely. In the long run it is better to charge more frequenrly, At least for modern phones as i have found out from battery experts.

  • Why my battery die so soon?

Both linux and vista agree, my laptop battery is dying. This is a dell laptop, about 1.5 years old.
My runtime is now about 1h, 55min. I forget what is was before.
    New batteries are about $140.
Any ideas why this happened so soon? I don't want a new battery to suffer the same fate.

Here is a thread about an issue with my power adapter, which may or may not be relavent.
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=55144

This is from ThinkWiki, but it applies to li-ion batteries in general.  This may or may not help you, but just in case:
    Lithium Ion General
        * avoid deep discharges except when resetting fuel gauge or reconditioning a battery; partial dis-/recharges are better for the battery lifetime (note: fuel gauge will slowly get inaccurate over time)
        * remove battery when on AC (due to heat)
        * avoid exposing the battery (or notebook) to excessive heat
    Lithium Ion Charging
        * avoid charging if battery is nearly full, unless you will need its full capacity soon; keep it on the 30%-85% charged range
        * keep notebook off while charging due to heat
        * fully discharge, then fully charge battery when needed to recalibrate fuel gauge; newer battery pack models require this less often, old ones might need it as often as every 30 cycles
    Lithium Ion Storage
        * never fully charged or discharged, ideally at about 40%
        * cool and dry, but do not freeze them: 10-15C is recommended
    Battery health
Batteries, especially of the modern Li-Ion type, wear out quicker when they hold a large charge or are subject to higher temperatures (see above).
If you use your laptop at a desk, reduce battery wear by maintaining an appropriate charge level. When possible, remove Li-ion batteries while operating from AC as the notebook gets hot enough inside for that to damage the battery in the long run, even if charging is stopped.
On recent ThinkPads, charging thresholds can be configured in the bundled software. Under Linux, this is supported on recent models by the tp_smapi driver (and even without tp_smapi, if you have a dual-boot setup, you can set the thresholds under Windows and they will be remembered as long as you don't power off your machine with AC disconnected; suspend to RAM is OK). Have a look at How to use UltraBay batteries.
If you have spare Li-ion battery packs, store them at 40% charge in a cool place (15C being a recommended temperature, do not let the batteries freeze). If storing inside a refrigerator, beware of humidity, and be careful with cold spots that can easily freeze the battery if anything goes wrong.

  • IPhone battery dying after few hours from 100% charge

Since I upgraded to the iOS 5.1 my battery life on the iPhone 4S has been ridiculous.
For example, I left my house at 740am with my phone on 100%, I have browsed a little (safari and facebook) for no more than 20-30 mins in total.  No apps are not running in the background as I ensure to close apps once i have finished with them. And now at 1400 I am left with 28% battery. i am not due to be at home until 1900.
Have I been unlucky with getting a dodgy iPhone from Orange?? the model is MD242B if that helps.
Also, notifications and banners are all turned off except for phone, messages, whatsapp, remainders, calendar.
I am careful not to over charge my phone, I do use an app called BatteryDoc to monitor my charging.
I always let my battery go flat before charging to 100% (with no trickle change), i believe this is a normal charge and what BatteryDoc advises i perform a full charge..
I am slowly regretting this phone after 6 months now.......
    any input is welcome.
    Thanks,
    Cookie

This was driving me insane too. I love my iphone but this is the one flaw. I tried all the "maximizing battery life" suggestions, and it helped slightly.
I have one suggestions: buy an iphone battery case. I bought one off ebay for $29.99 and it is amazing. Nearly doubles the battery and is way nicer than the one at Apple (not to mention 1/4 of the price). The item number is 200795419418 on eBay in case you are interested.
    Hope That Helped!!

  • I bought my 15" macbook pro i7 just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quick..at fully charged it says I only have 2:27 of usage time. I didn't pay for that-what can I do about it? I do have Apple care. Thanks.

I bought my 15" macbook pro just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quickly. This started maybe a month or two ago. Its hard to tell. I only noticed the rapid change recently. Fully charged it says I have 2:27 (2 hours and 27 minutes) of usage time...with about 50% screen and keyboard brightness.
I've checked inside system preferences and its cycle count is 261 and full charging cap is 6316.
I have apple care...is this something i can/need to take up with apple. You'd think if you pay the price for these machines you should get mroe use out of them.
ONLY A YEAR I'VE HAD THIS!
My PC lasted 4 years before the battery showed signs this dramatic of wear.
Any help is appreciated, im  new mac owner. thanks.

do you have a mbp with dual video cards? running the system with the higher end card increases the heat and also drains batt power.
i have the 1st gen unibody (2008) with an original removable battery of 311 cycles and 4453 charge. under normal use ill be happy to get 1.5hrs. the mac battery counter thing says i have 3.3hrs though (whatever). compared to me, i think you use your battery more than i do, perhaps its the reason why it degraded so fast in a year?

  • Why mac track pad becomes crazy when iPod nearby becomes fully charged?

I have a macbook air and an ipod 4g. When the ipod is coming near to 100% charge, my macbook track pad becomes uncontrolable. Can anyone explain to me why. Disconnecting my ipod solves the problem.
Also why is it that when the ipod is charging, i am not able to use the screen whithout it activating another part of the screen?

I'll attempt to deal with a couple of your questions...
I can reduce my MacBook's speed to that of treacle by putting a big-enough
number into the Dashboard calculator. (For example, try 999,999,999 x
999,999,999 then press = more than 13 times.) It would be bad enough for
the calculator to crash, but it instead makes the MacBook need a restart.
Why would you use the dashboard calculator to figure this out. I don't think there are that many calculators that can figure that out too quickly. There is also a calculator program in the applications folder which might be quicker, but even that would bog down with 999,999,999 to the 14th.
My iPod nano hasn't seen heavy use and I fitted it with a soft plastic cover ?
shortly after getting it. Cosmetically it's fine but its performance is
    gradually worsening.
Sometimes it crackles or the screen freezes or it refuses to play a track all
the way through. I use it with cheap headphones but they seem to work
well enough elsewhere (they don't crackle).
While it *****, I would restore the iPod to the original settings. You might get more answers regarding this in the iPod forum.
A few days ago I upgraded its RAM from 512 MiB to 2 GiB. Crucial delivered
promptly and I installed it myself. The new RAM seems to be recognized
and working, but the built-in keyboard and track-pad stopped working
    immediately afterwards.
I can't seem to revive them this time. As you can imagine, it's pretty silly
needing an external keyboard and mouse for a portable computer. I have
an AppleCare warranty. What should I do?
Did you try the old Ram to see if the keyboard and trackpad are working with it? Also there is a setting in preferences to ignore the built-in trackpad if there is an external one being used so I would check that as well. Other than that you do have the applecare, so you can always get it checked out for free.

  • Why does battery discharge in an hour? No apps, or other stuff running

My Macbook Pro battery has suddenly started to discharge very quickly. Why may that be?

Your battery appears to be OK.  The only other thing that may be the cause of the short battery life is the load placed on the MBP via applications.  If you say that you are not using CPU/GPU intensive applications such as Skype, video, Photoshop, etc.  then the culprit may be a runaway application.

I have been having issues with my battery capacity. The battery will drain within half an hour with it being fully charged when the battery normally lasts me all day. I haven't had the phone that long so it most definitely shouldn't be happening. I went to my service provider about the problem and he said to go into the apple website, click "support" and then "battery capacity issues" to which you then type in your email to troubleshoot the problem on your phones however, I cannot find this.
